Many of <strong>the</strong> buildings on <strong>the</strong> squareare scarcely appropriate to <strong>the</strong> place <strong>the</strong>y occupy, but in <strong>the</strong> march of progress<strong>the</strong>y will doubtless ere long be replaced by more comely structures. Mt. Vernonstreet is occupied by some of our most enterprising firms. The sign of L. S.Johnson on <strong>the</strong> corner, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> name of F. W. Breed, have come to be legardedas l<strong>and</strong>marks, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole street has a substantial <strong>and</strong> prosperous aiDpearance.Exchange street, <strong>the</strong> Fine street of <strong>the</strong> olden time, is a busy spot, but <strong>the</strong> buildingsare mostly small <strong>and</strong> of wood. Union street, from <strong>the</strong> square to Broadstreet, has, during <strong>the</strong> pastfew years, taken rapidstrides forward, <strong>and</strong> nowsome of our strongest Jifirms <strong>and</strong> best equipped liifactories are located here. ^The Brown <strong>and</strong> IngalKbuildings, on <strong>the</strong> leftwere <strong>the</strong> first brick factorieson <strong>the</strong> street.ThrAshcroft building, on <strong>the</strong>corner of Washington antlUnion streets, is a substantial<strong>and</strong> comely structure, <strong>and</strong> some live firmsare located in it. Thefirm of Shepherd, Murphy& Co., who occupy <strong>the</strong>corner store, are amongour most enterprisingyoung concerns, who doa safe <strong>and</strong> constantly in- -. _creasing business. The central square.firm of John S. Bartlett & Co. occupy <strong>the</strong> large building on <strong>the</strong> opposite corner,successors of <strong>the</strong> name <strong>and</strong> fame of <strong>the</strong> old firm of B. F. Doak & Co. The newBuftum block, opposite Washington street, is a h<strong>and</strong>some structure, <strong>and</strong> a decidedornament to that section. The factory of Mr. J. N. Smith was one of <strong>the</strong>first large buildings built in this section, <strong>and</strong> is one of <strong>the</strong> few large wooden factoriesnow remaining. The large Alley building, near <strong>the</strong> foot of <strong>the</strong> street, is avery convenient, well-equipped block, <strong>and</strong> is occupied by Kimball Bro<strong>the</strong>rs,who also have a large factory in Gardiner, Me., <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> firm of Charles Buflum& Co., a substantial firm of long st<strong>and</strong>ing. Mr. Buftum antedates most of <strong>the</strong>shoe manufacturers in <strong>Lynn</strong> now in active business. Broad street was at onetime headquarters for much of <strong>the</strong> business done in <strong>the</strong> town, but its gloryhas in a measure departed. The h<strong>and</strong>some factory of V. K. & A. H. Jones,on <strong>the</strong> corner of Beach street, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> large block at <strong>the</strong> head of Buflxim's wharf,are <strong>the</strong> only large factories on this street. The lower end of Market street hasalways been identified with <strong>the</strong> shoe <strong>and</strong> lea<strong>the</strong>r industry.In <strong>the</strong> cut previously
