Title: Nicolet 6700 on-axis interferometer optics<br />

Issue:<br />

The laser beampath through the beamsplitter and interferometer will<br />

change from Off-Axis to On-Axis starting with 6700 serial number prefix<br />

APW. This change affects the location of the interferometer laser<br />

pick off mirror, the beamsplitter style, laser detector preamp and the<br />

laser detector preamp cable.<br />

Also, there is a small cosmetic change to the beamsplitter manufacture<br />

process. This is described in detail with a picture on Page 2.<br />

Background:<br />

Magna 550, 750, 560, 760 and Nexus 470, 670, 870 models all used<br />

On-Axis interferometer optics. The Nicolet 6700 changed the laser<br />

beampath to Off-Axis for the Continuum XL and Micro Probe microscope.<br />

Off-Axis optics placed the laser signal and laser preamp off the<br />

center of the beamsplitter. This provided consistent illumination to the<br />

pixels of the array detector. These microscope models are either discontinued<br />

or in retirement. Off axis interferometer optics do not add any<br />

other value to the 6700 model. Therefore, the Nicolet 6700 will migrate<br />

back to On-axis beamsplitter optics.<br />

Upgraded systems:<br />

Magna, Protégé and Nexus systems that have been upgraded to the<br />

6700 are all On-Axis interferometer systems. The Magna / Protégé upgraded<br />

6700 systems have the AKL serial number prefix. This change<br />

will not affect the upgraded systems since they are already On-Axis.<br />

Solution:<br />

<strong>Factory</strong> <strong>Communication</strong><br />

Nicolet 6700 and 8700 systems with Serial number APW and forward will have On-Axis interferometers,<br />

laser preamps and beamsplitters. This change will be transparent to most customers.<br />

The greatest impact will affect what part to order when placing service orders for interferometers<br />

and beamplitters. There should be no need to change systems in the field from Off-<br />

Axis to On-Axis.<br />

Visual change to beamsplitter mask<br />

The On-Axis beamsplitter mask has been updated. The new on-axis beam splitters will show<br />

one slight visual difference from the older “Magna” and “Nexus” on-axis beam splitters. A thin<br />

uncoated slot will run from the central laser hole to the right side (pictured below). This is due<br />

to the use of a new metal mask for production, which greatly improves the yield in beam splitter<br />

manufacturing. This will not affect performance since the slot is in the shadow of the laser detector<br />

arm and the laser pick off mirror. The Solid Substrate beam splitter will not change. The<br />

Si beamsplitter has a drilled hole for the laser window with no slot, regardless of part number.<br />

Interferometer service orders for new Nicolet 6700 systems with On-Axis optics, AKL and<br />

APW serial number prefix, should order the On-Axis Nexus interferometer and<br />

beamsplitters.<br />
