MIDDLE COLLEGE NewsHow the other half live.This term the Year 8 studentshave learnt about immigrantsand refugees as part of theirunit of study in SOSE.Tuesday was Slum SurvivorDay – in which they hadopportunity to experiencesome of the challenges ofpoverty and being a refugee.The day started with banditsholding up their familygroups and removinganything the bandits couldfind. A mad rush to a pile ofcardboard led to the buildingof the student’s slum houses.The houses were tested forleaks resulting in a few wetstudents.Activities followed withstudents learning how tobarter for goods, bribeofficials for food, work forvery little money or carrywater for apples. Lunchprovided discussion on theinequities of the human racewith the pizza crew veryhappy they were not eatingbeans and rice or just rice.The lack of cutlery andsharing of rice was alsoconfronting for somestudents. The day ended withgames for food, debrief onhow the students felt duringthe day and some individualjournaling time.Our thanks go to Mr Ross,Mr Slater and MrDuggan for helping toset the tone for the dayas our bandits.Christmas is coming ... JOY TO THE WORLDYes it's September and that time of year againwhen we start collecting items to put in shoe boxesfor Operation Christmas Child. You can fill up awhole shoe box on your own or donate items forus to pack into boxes together.Step 1: Find a shoe boxStep 2: Fill the shoe box with toys, writing tools,and fill out form (from the office)Step 3: Return the shoe box and form to MissDrexler in J4http://samaritanspurse.gotdns.org/How many squares of all sizescan be found in this diagram?This was one of the many questions that the Grade8 Maths Competition presented about 20 teamsfrom Maryborough / Hervey Bay. Two Teams fromRiverside – Chelsea Klein (captain),Vanessa Swindells and Ryan Barnett(reserve: Makayla Parry) – battled it out in 5 different sections to make it intothe top 10. Simon Kinbacher (captain), Josie Jamieson-Bews and CoreyMacDonald did well in Section 1 estimation after the first question requestingthe estimation of an area of an equilateral triangle baffled the entireroom! Chelsea’s team scored a perfect 12 in the speed contest. Individualrounds of written and short answers started to challenge teams and the finalround of History and General Knowledge answers were only fully correct ifspelling was correct – all teams were relieved when the traditional unit used tomeasure the speed of a sailing boat allowed ‘knots’ instead of nautical milesper hour as correct. It was great to see our parents attending with ourstudents and trying to answer questions in the time allotted. Special thanks toMrs Kerri Stevens, who did a wonderful job helping to prepare the students inthe short lead up and for her support on the night.MiddleCollegeNews4

To develop theirskills in research, analysis and synthesis, the studentshad to complete a research task on any conflict topic oftheir choice. The topics that were chosen were highlyrelevant to the students and included the War on Terror,Whaling, The Dingoes on Fraser Island, The East AfricaCrisis and the Live Export Ban. The task had a multitudeof parts, which allowed for the students to show theirdifferent strengths. They had to complete a researchbooklet, conflict description, campaign poster and radioadvertisement.
