It’s never too lateto be punctual!Does your family start the day with repeated ordersand pleading to various members to get up, getdressed, have their breakfast etc etc? Some children are always late ‐ to school, to classes, with assignments ‐ and the chaos of their lives hasan effect on their ability to learn.Effective time management leads to greatercontentment. Being late is a way of life for manypeople. But good timekeeping can be learnt. One unpunctual member of the family can raise thestress levels for everyone.Be in control! How can you change thesehabits? Set their alarms, establish routines like who isfirst to breaky. Create ‘To Do’ lists and learn to enjoy ticking offeach task as they get it done. Regard lack of punctuality as a lack of manners. Reduce distractions. Turn off your TV in themorning. If necessary, set your watch and your clocks 5minutes early. Think about other people and how they feelhaving to wait for you. Plan your assignments with progress dates soyou easily meet the deadline. Aim to hand in work the day before it is due. Limit the amount of time you spend on surfingthe net and playing games. To feel more in control of your time, take note ofwhen you are late and by how much. Make thechanges not only for yourself but it is kind toconsider other people who are affected by yourhabits.Students arriving late to class each morningdisrupt the lesson time and this can also beembarrassing for the child who is late. Each day classes begin at 8.45am.Staff are on duty from 8.20am until 8.45amBlessingsStuart TaylorDeputy PrincipalThanks to all the staff involved with the NAPLAN testing.Thank you to staff and students ‐ much support and help was given for the recent Prayer Service, which was apositive experience for all. We constantly give praise for the quality staff here at Riverside and for their dedicationto work above and beyond the realms of their job description.Teebar Rodeo & CampdraftSaturday 19th JuneVarious competitions will be displayed in the Teebar Hall, Brooweena.Art, Photography, Story writing, Cookery and many more categories. The OfficeDesk2

News from the CHAPLAINLast week we held our Community Chapel Service. This wasbased around the theme of prayer. Representatives of staffand students from Year 5, Middle and Senior College,Distance Education, and Leadership personnel intercededwith prayers to God for their peers, leaders, and personnelunder their care. I believe that God will not only hear butwill answer the prayers submitted on this day. Giving youngpeople the opportunity to express their faith is to also givethem opportunity to grow spiritually through theirparticipation. There are certain ways that children wordtheir prayers with such an innocence or ‘bluntness’ thatallows a warm wave of joy or happiness to envelope us aswe agree with them. Having the opportunity to hear ourteachers and supervisors pray for us lets us know of theirpastoral care and concern for the people they areresponsible for. I personally am quite grateful for theopportunity in this College to freely participate in corporatetimes of prayer.YOUTH GROUP ACTIVITIESHey Kids …. Welcome to the business end of Semester 1!Final assignments, exam blocks and reports will all becompleted in the coming weeks. Please remain prayerfulfor students and staff alike. The following are some tips for the Year 8 & 9 studentswho sit exams in Week 8 and the Senior students who sitexams in Week 9.1. Be Organised. Have a revision timetable. Writedown the dates and times of the exams. With yourchild, work out what needs to be done by when and‘reverse engineer’ a revision timetable. Don’t letthem leave difficult subjects to the last moment.2. Target specific topics in the revision timetable, notwhole subjects.3. There is no correct revision method. Find the way to revise that works the best.4. Concentration increases with adequate hydration and a low GI diet.5. Exercise regularly.6. Forty minutes is about as long as a child can concentrate in one stretch. The brain’s ability to concentratedrops after 35 to 40 minutes so it is best to take a break at that point for 5 or 10 minutes. The brainmaximises beginnings and endings but not the middle, so this method effectively minimises that middleperiod. It’s a good time for a drink and some fruit (or nuts.... but NOT high sugar food). Be warned that TVor computer entrainment/socialising at the break will make it very hard to get started again.7. Remind them that just staring at notes doesn’t help. They need strategies to ensure the material is beingabsorbed- writing it down, repeating it aloud, testing themselves.8. Seniors should revise exam technique, using past papers (if available). Every question should be attemptedand the answer planned out before starting to write.9. Accept that children are worried about exams and tend to be grumpy. Remind them about stress-reductiontechniques like exercise and calm breathing. Reassure them that you value their efforts more than perfectresults.10. On the morning of an exam, avoid wishing them ‘good luck’. Talk of luck can raise anxiety levels. Schoolexams are not a lottery; they are one way to appraise learning. It’s better to say - “I hope everything goeswell’.REMINDER: the last day of Term for students is Tuesday 22 nd June.UPDATE: the first day of Term 3 is Tuesday 13 th July.REPORTS: can be collected from College Reception on the morning (only) of Friday 25 th June.
