Conveniently locatedin the centre of the village, overlooking StLlawddog Church. The school was originally builtin 1845 with a separate building constructed in1950 which housed the infants. Due to the reorganisationof Primary educationin the area an extension was builtin the year 2000.During the Easter term 2006 anEarly Years Centre was built andopened on the campus.Children are admitted to schoolat the commencement of the term followingtheir third birthday and leave to attendsecondary school in the September followingtheir eleventh birthday.4

In KeyStage 2 children have opportunities to build onthe skills they have started to acquire and developduring the Foundation Phase.13

Dysgu ac Addysgu / Teaching and LearningEin nod yw creu dysgwyr effeithiol sy’n llawn cymhelliant,sy’n fwyfwy cyfrifol am eu dysgu euhunain, sy’n gallu gwneud defnydd llawn o’r technolegaunewydd ac a fydd yn gallu dysgu achymhwyso sgiliau newydd yn effeithiol ar hyd euhoes, boed hynny yn yr ysgol, yn y gwaith, neugartref.Defnyddir nifer o strategaethau er mwyngewithredu a datblygu y dysgu a’r addysgu o fewnyr ysgolOur aim regarding learning and teaching is tocreate learners that are motivated and effective,becoming increasingly responsible fortheir own learning, able to make full use of thenew technologies and who will be able to learnand apply new skills effectively throughouttheir lives, whether in school, the workplace orat home.Various approaches are used to develop andimplement learning and teaching in our schoolas noted in the table below:Mapiau Meddwl:Y mae mapiau meddwl yn un o’r dulliau mwyafpwerus i gyfoethogi dysgu plentyn. Herio sgiliau meddwl ac ymestyn y dysgu.Mae’r disgyblion yn creu map meddwl yn unolâ’u hoedran a’u gallu.Mind maps:Mind mapping is one of the most powerfultools we use to enrich children’s learning.The map is like a spider diagram with a keyword/picturein the middle. The map thendevelops from the centre outwards, with keywordsor pictures joined by lines or arrows toshow connections. Purpose of using mindmaps in our school is to:Assess current knowledge and understandingShare ideas and foster group workMake connections between conceptsRevisit previous learningChallenge thinking and extend learningPupils create mind maps according to theirage and ability.14

Canolbwyntio ar Sgiliau / A Focus on SkillsRydym yn defnyddio’r Adran Sgiliau yngngorchmynion y cwricwlwm cenedlaethol a’rFframwaith ar gyfer Dysgu Plant 3-7 oed ermwyn nodi pa sgiliau y dylid canolbwyntioarnynt. Mae’r athrawon yn ymwybodol o’rsgil gyfredol sydd dan sylw, ac o’r sgiliau aaddysgwyd eisoes, ac maent yn cynlluniocyfleoedd i’w defnyddio, fel bod yr holl ysgolyn cymryd rhan yn y gwaith parhaus oddatblygu, cymhwyso a chyfnerthu sgiliau.We use the Skills section out of the NationalCurriculum and the Curriculum for 3-7 year oldsto identify which skills are to be the focus .Teachers are aware of the skill that is the currentfocus and of those that have already beentaught and can plan opportunities for their use,so that the school is a part of ongoing skills development.Asesu a Chofnodi / Assesment and ReportingGwahoddir y rhieni i Nosweithiau Rhieni yn nhymhorau’rHydref a’r Gwanwyn lle rhoddir cyfle i'rrhieni edrych o amgylch yr ysgol i weld gwaith yplant ac i siarad yn unigol ag athro'r plentyn. Dosberthiradroddiad ysgrifenedig ar gynnydd y disgyblionar ddiwedd tymor yr Haf.Mae croeso hefyd i rieni ymweld â'r ysgol ar unrhywamser cyfleus i ymdrin â gwaith eu plentynneu broblemau a allai godi. Gwahoddir rhieni syddyn pryderu ynglyn â phroblemau addysgiadol, ymddygiadolneu ddatblygiadau corfforol i gwrdd â'rPennaeth ar unrhyw amser. Gellir trin problemaufel yr uchod yn llwyddiannus yn yr ysgol.Every year in the Autumn and Spring terms,Parent Evenings are held for parents, so thatthey may see the child’s work and discuss his/her development with the teacher. A writtenprogress report on each child is sent out toparents at the end of the Summer term wherespecific targets are set for each child to movetheir learning forward.Parents are also welcome to visit the school atany time convenient to the teacher and parentsto discuss their child’s progress on anyproblems that might arise. Parents with anxietiesabout their children’s educational, behavioural,or physical developments are invited todiscuss the problem with the Head teacher.Often the above problems can be dealt withsuccessfully at school.15

In the FoundationPhase every pupil receives 1 hour ofphysical education (which is extra to theclassroom provision) and the younger childrenreceive 2 hours every week. Generallythe main teaching aims of Physical Education areto encourage and help every child to live ahealthy and lively lifestyle. It is also aimed atpromoting the development of pleasant attitudessuch as effort, fair play, playing together, perseverance,achievement and self-confidence.These aims are achieved by offering a widerange of activities for children of all ages, withinand outside the formal curriculum; thus challengingthem to develop and improve their individualperformance. These activities include Gymnastics,Dance, Swimming, Athletics, Open Air Activitiesand Adventure and Competitive games.We ensure that every pupil has the opportunityto represent the school in some aspectof sports by competing at regional,county or national level.Community resources are used which includethe swimming pool, multi-use gamesarea (M.U.G.A), playing fields along with theschool yard that ensure a wide range of opportunitiesfor the pupils to practice.The children are trained by specialist teachers.We are of the opinion that our contact with localclubs are an important pathway for those childrenwho wish to develop their interests outsideof school.The pool at Ysgol Ddwyieithog y Preseli is usedfor swimming lessons. Children from Years 3, 4,5 and 6 are transported to the pool freeof charge. The children also use the facilitiesof the Sports Hall on the campus ofthe school.17

School’s Language PolicyThe Local Education Authority asserts its belief in the educational value of acquiring twolanguages.The aim of this bilingual policy is to teach children to be totally bilingual in the use of Welsh andEnglish by the time they leave primary school to enable them to participate fully in the bilingualcommunity of which they are a part. This provision at the school should ensure that each childis able to communicate confidently in both languages and be aware of Welsh cultural heritage.Welsh is used as the main medium of communication in the school. In the Early Years classespupils are educated in the medium of Welsh so that children receive a thorough grounding in thelanguage;Welsh will also be the main medium of life and work in the junior classes and English is normallyintroduced when the children begin the junior phase of their education in order to ensure thatthey have the opportunity to develop bilingually by the time they leave the school.Mathematicsand Science are taught through the medium of Welsh in Key Stage 2.Being bilingual has a number of advantages: The school is situated in an area where Welsh is spoken and used widely. It is thereforeimportant that the school’s pupils develop the ability to use both languages confidently andfluently, so that they can choose to take part fully in all aspects of life in the area. Some of our children will move on to learn other languages in the future, and research showsthat children who are bilingual learn other languages more quickly than those who speak onlyone language Also, in the long term, the ability to use both languages is an important advantage in theworkplace in Wales. Therefore, ensuring that children can develop the ability to speak bothlanguages means wider work and development opportunities either locally or internationally.Pupils who move to the school midway through their primary education are encouraged to attenda two day a week language course at the Welsh Language Centre at Ysgol y Preseli. This courseensures a basic introduction to the language in a small and reassuring setting.19

Theschool keeps a record of the telephonenumbers of parents and in case of accidents,should a child require medical treatment, everyeffort is made to contact parents first, dependingon the seriousness of the case. Minoraccidents will be dealt with by membersof staff, but in the case of themore serious accident, the pupilswill be taken to a doctor. In all caseswhere serious accidents occur full detailswill be forwarded to the Risk Assessmentunit of the Local EducationAuthority.On each school day a member of staffis on duty fifteen minutes before the commencementand for the same period at the endof the school day, to supervise theand ensure their safe departure from theschool premises. During playtime, achildrenmemberof teaching staff as well as a member of thesupport staff is on duty in theplayground,or in the case of inclement weather, in theschool. During the lunchperiod, supervisionis carried out by the meals’ supervisors.29

We must take account of the age,maturity development and beliefs of the pupils.It is appropriate to introduce sex educationto infant children, as many seek informationand assurance at a very early age. It isfar more valuable if questions are answerednaturally as they arise at a level appropriateto the development and maturity ofthe child.We organise visits which may enhance thedevelopment of the sex education programmein the school.Parents are welcome to come in and talk to thestaff at any time in their child’s school life andwill be encouraged to feel part of a partnershipin preparing young people to becomeresponsible and caring adults.Where parents are concerned about sex educationthey may ask to withdraw their childfrom any part of this programme that does notform part of the National Curriculum.At the end of the school year Year 6 pupilsare invited to discuss with the School Nursematters that may be worrying them regardingchanges that happen during the teenage years.If parents do not wish to take advantage ofthis provision they are welcomed to withdrawpupils from this class.30

Thehomework set will be an extension of classwork. Pupils are expected to keep a‘Homework Diary’. Parents should inspect thediary on a regular basis and sign that theirchild has completed the homework to thebest of his/her ability. Results of spellingtests are also written down in this diary.Homework will include – formal and creative writing in bothlanguages spelling tests mathematical exercises including thelearning of tables learning poetry/words to be related inschool productions, Urdd Eisteddfodetc.32
