INTRODUCTION.
Welcome to ward 5. We hope you enjoy you placement with us here at the
Freeman Hospital. We look forward to sharing and facilitating your learning
experience with us and welcome you as a fresh and vital part of our team. We
understand and remember what it is like to come to a new and unfamiliar
environment and all the pressure that entails. We have therefore developed
this information document to help you achieve the requirements and
expectations set by the university.
This document contains essential information about the ward, an induction
checklist and a profile of learning opportunities. In addition we have made
suggestions for possible visits to enhance your time in this learning zone. It
allows you to establish dates for initial, intermediate and final interviews in
advance, whilst establishing key points of your learning contract with your
mentor. Using this document along with one of our year specific competency
booklets, we hope to provide a useful framework for your time here in order to
fulfil your learning experience The Education Resource box (black box) is also
a valuable resource for you to use.
Here on ward 5 we appreciate that learning is a multi-directional process and
we welcome this concept. Please share with us anything that you find
particularly useful or any resources that may be of benefit to other students in
the future and to us on the ward. We welcome your contributions, suggestions
and evaluations. If you have any particular worries please discus these with
your mentors, ward managers or any member of our team.
Finally, we hope that you have an enjoyable and productive experience with
us as part to our team, dedicated to providing outstanding patient care.
Ward Five Team.

YOUR MENTOR
WARD FIVE INFORMATION.
On arrival to the ward, you will be introduced to your mentor who will be
responsible for you during your allocation. Your mentor will show you around
the ward and ensure you are familiar with nurse call system fire and cardiac
arrest procedures. It may not always be possible to work with your mentor, but
this will give you the opportunity to experience different approaches to care.
ORGANISATION OF THE WARD
Various shift patterns are currently in practice on Ward 5, most staff work 2
long days and two short days, the long day is from 07:30 – 20:30 , short days
are early 07:30 – 14:30 and 13:30 – 20:30, Nights are 20:00 – 07:45 3 one
week, four the next. Please discuss your preference with your mentor.
The ward implements a form of team nursing.
Team 1 consists of the patients in Bay 1, Bay 2 and cubicle 1, 2, and 3.
Team 2 consists of the patients in Bay 3 and Cubicles 4-8.
You and your mentor will be allocated a team of patients to care for during
your span of duty. You may change teams after days off. Each team has there
own team leader, who will coordinate the care for that group of patients.
The nurses on the ward provide holistic care toward their patients, from
completing the admission procedure, providing pre- and post-operative care,
administering drugs and organising the patient’s discharge from hospital.
USEFUL VISITS
Ward 5 aims to offer a variety of learning opportunities. It may be possible to
visit various departments or shadow specialist nurses during your time with us
as part of your placement. Whilst these visits are important, they represent
only part of the ward experience and must planned with your competencies in
mind and organised through your mentor. The list of contacts included with
the POLO, will help you to decide upon any visits you may find useful.
