Thomas Byrd has been practicing his passion, orthopaedicsurgery, for the last two decades. Dr. Byrd’s specialty inarthroscopic techniques emphasizes less invasive surgery for apotentially easier and quicker recovery.A native Nashvillian, Dr. Byrd is the third generation of physicians in his family toserve this community. He received his undergraduate degree from the Universityof Miami, graduating magna cum laude. He obtained his medical degree fromVanderbilt University and performed his orthopaedic training at the University ofLouisville. Dr. Byrd participated in two fellowship training programs. The first,sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery under Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham,Alabama, has remained the focus of Dr. Byrd’s career. He also completedfellowship training in joint replacement and reconstructive surgery at New EnglandBaptist Hospital in Boston.Dr. Byrd is team physician for the Tennessee Titans and has served as physicianfor the U.S. Olympic Team. He is a consulting orthopaedic surgeon for numerousprofessional sports franchises from the NFL, NHL, NBA, WNBA, and MLB, as wellas the <strong>AT</strong>P professional tennis tour. For twenty years, Dr. Byrd also served asteam physician for area universities, in addition to numerous high schools andattending physician to the Nashville Ballet.Dr. Byrd is the founder of Nashville Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center,which allows him to continue his dream of providing highest quality, state of theart, specialty orthopaedic care. He has held numerous local, national, and internationalappointments and has authored several textbooks on hip arthroscopy,contributed numerous textbook chapters, in addition to publishing over 50 scientificarticles. His referral base of patients is international and he is visited byorthopaedic surgeons from all parts of the world to learn his techniques. As ascientist, Dr. Byrd has developed several surgical techniques that are commonlyemployed throughout the orthopaedic world and invented numerous instrumentsthat have revolutionized aspects of orthopaedic surgery.Dr. Byrd has served as a visiting surgeon and lectures frequently at national andinternational meetings. (Jed) Kuhn is Associate Professor of Orthopaedicsand Rehabilitation and Chief of Shoulder Surgery at VanderbiltUniversity <strong>Medical</strong> School in Nashville, Tennessee. He receivedhis medical degree from The University of Michigan <strong>Medical</strong>School. His residency training and internship took place at The University ofMichigan Health System. Dr. Kuhn did two Fellowships, one in Ilizarov Techniquesin Lecco, Italy and a fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine andShoulder Surgery at The Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, CO.Dr. Kuhn is Team Physician, Vanderbilt University Athletics and Team Physician,Nashville Sounds Baseball Team, AAA affiliate of Milwaukee Brewers, Nashville,TN. He is National Football League Players Association Consulting Physicianand Head Team Physician, Nashville Predators Ice Hockey Team, NHL.Among other Committee and Board involvement, Dr. Kuhn currently serves on theScientific Advisory Board, Orthopaedic Research Foundation of the <strong>Carolina</strong>s inSpartanburg, SC. In 2011 he received the Charles S. Neer Award for ClinicalResearch. Dr. Kuhn has had a variety of teaching experiences, has presentedscientific research both nationally and internationally and has written numerouspublications and book chapters.Dr. Kuhn is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and amember of the American Orthopaedic <strong>Society</strong> for Sports Medicine, AmericanShoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association and TheHawkins <strong>Society</strong>. His research interests include Microtraumatic Laxity of theShoulder in the Throwing Athlete and Outcomes Research in the Shoulder. SOAis pleased to welcome Dr. Kuhn to the <strong>SEC</strong> Program this year.Angus M. McBryde Jr., MD, FACSDr. Angus M. McBryde Jr., MD, FACS currently practices at theUniversity of South <strong>Carolina</strong> in Columbia, SC. He received hismedical degree from Duke University in 1963. An internship andjunior assistant residency followed at the University of Pennsylvania. He then servedtwo years in the U.S. Navy, including a year in Vietnam, followed by a residency atDuke. From 1977-1979 he was <strong>Medical</strong> Director of The <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> OrthopaedicHospital (NCOH) in Gastonia, NC. In 2000, he joined the University of South<strong>Carolina</strong> faculty as a professor. As USC Sports Medicine Director, he initiated anddeveloped sports coverage for the University and surrounding areas.Dr. McBryde served as team physician at the World Games in Zugreg, Yugoslavia,in 1987, the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea in 1988, and the OlympicGames in Atlanta, GA in 1996. He was Chairman of the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> Governor’sCouncil on Physical Fitness from 1989-1991 and received the prestigious <strong>North</strong><strong>Carolina</strong> ‘Order of the Long Leaf Pine’ from Governor Jim Martin.Professional activities included committee assignments with the American Academyof Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in Educational Programming and Chairman of theNomenclature and Coding Committee. He was Membership Chair with theAmerican Orthopaedic Association (AOA), President of the Mecklenberg County<strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Society</strong> (MCMS) in 1983, the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> Orthopaedic Association 1985and Vice President of the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Society</strong> in 1989, and President ofthe Southern <strong>Medical</strong> Association 1994. He was a founding member of the SouthernOrthopaedic Association and President in 1984. He was also President of theClinical Orthopaedic <strong>Society</strong> in 2009.He has numerous publications including peer-reviewed publications, book chapters,a history of NCOH, Instructional Courses and Academy DVD contributions. He isalso Southern <strong>Medical</strong> Journal Associate Editor.Dr. McBryde is married to another Durham native, Kay Kirkpatrick McBryde, witheight, now grown children and 19 grandchildren, two of whom are physicians. SOAwelcomes Dr. McBryde to this year’s <strong>SEC</strong> Symposium.


Darren L. Johnson, MD<strong>SEC</strong> Team Physician of the YearOne of the highlights of the SOA <strong>SEC</strong> Program is a specialpresentation honoring the outstanding <strong>SEC</strong> Team Physicianof the Year, chosen by the <strong>SEC</strong> member institutionathletic training staffs. We are extremely pleased to announcethe winner for 2013 is Darren L. Johnson, MD andhe will receive the award at this meeting.Born and raised in Torrance, California, Dr. Johnson received his medical degreefrom the University of California, Los Angeles. He then completed his orthopedicresidency at the University of Southern California followed by a fellowship insports medicine and shoulder surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.Dr. Johnson has received numerous awards, published 90 peer reviewed manuscriptsas well as over 25 book chapters. He has presented at multiple nationaland international meetings on varied complex topics in the athletically active.Dr. Johnson is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgeryat the University of Kentucky, as well as head team Orthopedic Surgeon for theWildcats. He also has served as the SOA <strong>SEC</strong> Program Chair for the past fiveyears.He and his wife Nancy, have three children, son Brandon and daughters Kelseyand Lauren.
