esStrategy AndPoliciesThe aim of the Europeana Space project is toincrease and enhance the creative industries’use of Europeana and other online collections ofdigital cultural content, by delivering a range ofresources to support their engagement.The project addresses all sectors of the creativeindustries, from content providers to producers,exhibitors, artists and makers of cultural/creativecontent, publishers, broadcasters, telecoms anddistributors of digital content.Europeana Space intends to make an impactin several areas. In addition, to increase theuse of Europeana by showing how digitalcultural content can generate new kinds ofcultural experiences, we are going to createnew opportunities for employment andeconomic growth within the creative industriesthrough continuing development of innovativeapplications and services based on Europe’s richdigital cultural resources.The use of digital cultural heritage by the creativeindustries is still limited by factors including issuesaround the IPR status of content and the need forbusiness models demonstrating the potential forexploitation of available content. In addressingthese problems Europeana Space brings togetherexperts from the European creative industriesand cultural heritage sectors, technology-basedenterprises, and higher education.A wide-ranging communication and sustainabilityprogramme, with a special attention toeducational dissemination strategies, ensuresEurope-wide penetration of the Best Practicedeveloped and shared through the project.3


What’s The Goal?4The Europeana Space Innovation Space isdesigned to spark new creative re-use projects.Through 6 thematic Hackathons, three projectsfrom each event will win a trip to London foran intensive Business Modelling Workshop inLondon, and from those three winners pick theproject that has the highest potential to shakethings up in the marketplace. That one luckyproject will receive a tailored incubation supportpackage from REMIX, one of the world’s leadingentrepreneurial and start-up catalyzers as wellas the Europeana Space project consortium; aproject made up of technical, creative and culturalexperts located all across Europe. Within theInnovation Space we all have one goal in mind,getting you and your great idea ready to makewaves in a sector craving disruptive change.

6How It WorksBusiness Modelling WorkshopsOften, a Hackathon lasting just a few days doesn’tresult in bulletproof, market-ready products.Therefore the three most promising hackathonoutcomes will win a trip to the REMIX officesin London for an intensive Business ModellingWorkshop. There, these young and fresh ideaswill be pushed further through consultation andtalks from a team of relevant experts.Creating a successful new enterprise requiresmany different elements, including a clearunderstanding of what demand exists for theideas and prototypes you create.considering the proposition, scale and type ofdemand, and business model.Focusing on enterprise is also a powerful way tobecome more consumer and demand-focused.Delegates will learn techniques to effectivelysegment their market and target their offering toone or more groups.By asking questions such as, “What consumertrends can we utilize?”, “What are the needs anddesires of our customer segment and how canwe serve them?” and “What do our customersvalue?” the hackathon winners can come upwith solutions and strategies that bring digitalcultural heritage to a wider and more diversifiedaudience.The objective of the Workshop is to explorethe business potential of the project ideas,


Courtesy of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and VisionParticipants will be encouraged to think laterallyaround their ideas – to find the hidden gemscontained within larger ideas, and to fully evaluatesome of the assumptions they enter with.The three finalists will have an additional chanceto win a tailored, three-month program ofbusiness incubation from world-class industryleaders online and via Skype.


<strong>Incubation</strong> SupportSuccessfully taking an idea from conception tothe market is a more complex process than mostexpect. The Europeana Space Innovation Spaceis designed to assist and mentor this process tothe best of our capabilities. Thus, the best projectout of the three invited to the Business ModellingWorkshop will win a tailored incubation supportpackage from REMIX and the Europeana Spaceconsortium.<strong>Incubation</strong> participants will be asked to completea series of mentored courses over an intensivethree-month period. By the end of the <strong>Incubation</strong>period, the business plan for each projectteam will ready for pitching to investors or forlaunching directly (as applicable).Each project team will be given an initialevaluation to tailor their learning priorities for the<strong>Incubation</strong> phase. e given access to an online platform containinga mix of inspirational speakers (in part sourcedfrom the global REMIX conferences in London,New York and Sydney).In addition to the business, marketing and financesupport provided by REMIX, additional supportis available to participants from the E-Spacepartners throughout the <strong>Incubation</strong> period.The teams will be asked to remotely undertakea series of exercises and planning workshops.Once complete, their responses will be discussedat length with their mentor on the REMIX team inorder to challenge and refine their thinking.The support areas will be tailored per team, inorder to emphasise elements where furtherdevelopment is required. However, they willbroadly correspond to the following buildingblocks: sources of finance; consumer insight;cultural assets; identifying the right opportunities;thinking multi-channel; managing resources;managing innovation; marketing; working withcreative IP; collaboration and partnerships;building and sustaining communities of interest;pitching and presentation skills.9
