The club is alive and well. Your board is aiming at providing at least one event per month. We accomplished that in
January and February by having two very successful and well-attended events.
In January we had 45 families who made reservations for the New Year's reception at Henk’s, so I guess about 70 people.
We all enjoyed the oliebollen and bitterballen, which are every year, prepared by our oliebollenbitterballenkoks
Kars and Lammert. Erwin wrote an article about the event for this Tulip Talk.
In February we decided to present you with a "gezellige Hollandse avond" which can be translated to a "homey/cozy
Dutch evening", where we served homemade kroketjes (I leave the translation to the various spouses) served with desserts
of rice-, griesmeel- and bitterkoekjes-puddings with delicious sauces. The French fries had been donated by Mac-
Donald's. There is an article in this Tulip Talk describing the event.
In March we will have the rijsttafel on Friday the 16th at our usual location, the Holiday Inn Select in Richardson. We
need volunteer cooks for the rijsttafel. Please contact Nathalie, she will coordinate with you what dish to cook. The
club pays for all required materials. For the event itself, please book early with Agatha.
In April we plan to have, like other years, a Spring Festival at the De Haan's Rooster Ranch in Waxahachie. We will
have the Easter Egg Hunt activities for the children with a nature walk for all. I hope that this year we will have a full
crop of bluebonnets and other wild flowers.
And in May we will have the annual ball on "Bevrijdingsdag", May 5th, again at the Holiday Inn Select in Richardson.
The board is in the process of putting together a nominating committee for the nominations of board members for the
next term. Due to resignations we have more vacancies on the board than usual. We need to fill five positions, Vice
President, Secretary, Treasurer, Reservations and Membership. Please consider yourself for a board position even if
you have served on the board before. If we cannot fill these positions then it will be virtually impossible to arrange these
wonderful events.
$76.25 + $33.00 shipping
( $35.00 voor zaterdagsbezorging). Exchange: $1 US = Euro 0,791
Do you know?
Pella, Iowa (ingezonden door Maria Kamerbeek)
Een Nederlandse nederzetting van ongeveer 14,000 inwoners,
waarvan 40 miljonair zijn. Er is een jaarlijkse tulpenoptocht.
Downtown toont nu nog echte Nederlandse voorgevels,
en men spreekt nog Nederlands. Er staat een echte
molen, en men waant zich dus in ons vaderland. Een
bekende bakkerij is bakkerij Jaarsma, die gespecialiseerd is
in speculaas en kletskoppen, Goudse kaarsen en Delfts
aardewerk.

in april. Een geweldige paar maanden gewenst!
Verslag WHITE ELEPHANT PARTY
85 CANDLES
It took us 85 candles to light for every female Holland-America Club member that didn't show up at the White Elephant Party on
Dec. 13th.No, no, no, no, it wasn't a sad get-together, we only missed so many!!!!!! Actually the candles really helped to create a
cozy atmosphere. So did the Christmas music, the tree, food, wine and all the wonderful ladies that did came to our home. Yes, we
did eat too much... Salmon, anchovies filled eggs, ham, cheese, shrimp. Such a temptation. We indulged on the desserts. Can you say
no to home made peanut clusters, gevulde speculaas and crême brulée?
It was amazing to see what special gifts everybody got. Everybody had been creative and so every gift ended up to exchange at least
once and several three times. That's when the gift is finally frozen and can't change owner anymore.
Next year we will plan the White Elephant Party a little earlier in the season. I’d rather light 75 candles (it's still enough) and open a
couple more wine bottles. Why don't you put Thursday Dec. 6th 2007 already on your calendar? Good chance that this time the Holland
America Club will be the first party on that day.
Verslag NIEUWJAARSRECEPTIE
New Year's reception 2007 (door Erwin van Trier)
Tatararaaaa! Dames en heren, beste clubleden:
The 2007 New Year's reception speech by Kars en Lammert.

Verslag GEZELLIGE AVOND
Verslagen en ander nieuws
This evening was truly what “Gezellige” means; it was an extremely nice, pleasant time spent with our many HAC
friends and members. We would say it was a huge success, because the clubhouse had a maximum seating of 50
persons, and Agatha had to turn away five people. (We who were there felt glad we had made reservations early!)
Just getting together is nice, but we were also treated to a great meal of homemade “kroketjes, frietjes” (better known as
fries in the U.S.), and rolls. Every table was also loaded with cheeses, sausage, nuts and potato chips for munching on.
We’d probably have done less munching if we’d known how good the kroketjes were going to be! There was also a great
selection of beer, soft drinks and water to round out this delightful meal. We know that no one went home hungry, since
we all felt like overstuffed bears by the time we finished.
Since we were well fed, the board had arranged for our favorite D.J., Mark de Haan, to give us a good workout via a lot
of singing, and dancing the night away. He made the party a huge success, as the dancing went on till eleven, when the
board had to practically throw us out the door so they could clean up and go home. The dance floor stayed full, as we
did every kind of fun thing imaginable. This included our Dutch exercise lesson, country and line dancing, the twist and
the limbo. And I’m still not sure what that one was done sitting on the floor (by the more adventuresome). Guess we’ll
have to ask Erwin Van Trier about that! We bet he had some sore muscles the next day, as he didn’t sit down the entire
evening and danced every dance with enough energy for the entire group! Just go to the website
(www.hollandamericaclub.com) to see the pictures of this, and the fun we had that evening. Truly, not many sat on the
sidelines with all the merriment going on.
Directions to the clubhouse were great, we didn’t even have to use our GPS. I counted the stoplights while Rudy kept up
with the miles, and we were in the parking lot before we knew it. Surely Frits and Meta didn’t get lost, as the clubhouse
was at the entrance to their subdivision. We don’t remember ever attending a HAC event we didn’t like, but this was
tops. Our sincerest thanks go to all the board members and those who helped them make this evening such as great success.
We are looking forward to the next one.
Monica and Rudy Gerdes
De bekende dirigent van het
concertgebouworkest Jaap van Zweden
is als hoofddirigent van het Dallas
Symphonieorkest aangesteld. De HAC
heet hem hartelijk welkom, en wij weten
dat hij een geweldige aanwinst zal
worden! Hij blijft zijn aanstellingen in
Nederland met het koninklijke
philharmonieorkest behouden.
Veel success in Dallas, Mr. van Zweden !

event our new Board will be chosen and the winner of our Logo contest will be announced. More
information will be forthcoming in our next Tulip Talk, and you will get an invitation.
Club Reservations Policy
On several occasions the club has incurred losses due to members who had made reservations without paying,
and then not showing up for the event.
When you are making a reservation for an event, we ask that you make a reservation with, and send a check
to, our director Agatha Mills. It has happened that some members made reservations, without sending a
check, and then don't show up.
Your Board would like to point out that as a result of reservations, commitments are being made by the Club.
In other words, if you make a reservation for the Queen's Ball for two people without sending a check, and do
not show up, the Club is still responsible for paying $35 for each member who did not come ($25 paid by
member, plus $10 additional which the Club paid for each member.) This is a loss of $70 for your Club.
It has been decided for future events, that unless your reservation is accompanied or immediately followed
by a check, no reservation will be made. In other words, if there is NO check, there is NO reservation.
Please ensure the timely receipt of the check; commitments will only be made based on the checks
received. If your check is received after the deadline, a $10 late fee will be assessed to your reservation..
In case you have made a paid reservation and are then prevented from coming, the club will refund your
money, provided the Reservations Chair receives the notification of cancellation before the commitment is
made.

Dutch pilot training consolidates at Springfield, Ohio
VOLKEL – The training of Dutch F-16 fighter pilots will soon take place at the Springfield Air National
Guard Base in Ohio where the current Arizona program also will be consolidated. Dutch
pilots usually start their training locally in PC-7 aircraft. Previously, they were Tuscon, Arizonabound
for training in a range of aircrafts. Until now, the F-16 training upon return to the Netherlands
was given at Volkel but this was far from ideal to area-residents who objected to noise
generated by the jets. With news of the impending departure of the planes, the defense department
is reviewing environmental impact studies to balance the needs of the air base and those
of the local community.
Archeologists unearth a stretch of border road built by Romans
HOUTEN – Could the recently unearthed stretch of the Roman border road between Utrecht and
Geldermalsen still be older than the proverbial one to Kralingen (zo oud als de weg naar Kralingen)?
Dutch archeologists discovered stretches of such a route parallel to the railway where
they also found other Roman-era artifacts. They already knew that the border between Romanheld
territory and that of unoccupied Batavian tribal land was guarded by fortifications which had
been connected by a road. They now have unearthed evidence of the road in various locations
along the route, now nominated for the designation of a World Heritage site.
OECD recommends tolling Dutch roads
PARIS – The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development thinks it knows the answer
for Dutch traffic woes. Saying the Dutch economy suffers from the country’s inability to
solve freight transportation problems, it recommends tolling the roads, upgrading public transportation
in the Randstad and building roads to and from Almere, an emerging city in Flevoland.
Dutch freight increasingly is being moved by railway cars or river and canal barges.

schaatsen veroverde was in 1972.
geschiedenis. De eerste was in 1967 (Stien Baas-Kaiser/Kees Verkerk), de tweede in 1970 (Keulen-
Deelstra/Schenk).
