Tighter international maritime regulations are being imposed to reduce the risk ofpollution following a tanker accident or grounding. Though navies are exempt, they recognise it is in their wider interests to be seen to comply with new andanticipated environmental regulations.AegirSkipskonsulent and BMT Defence Services offer navies developing areplenishment capability, or replacing existing single-hull Auxiliary Oilers (AO),an attractive alternative to converting commercial double-hull tankers. The Aegir support ship design offers:• Low programme, financial and technical risk• A no-compromise replenishment capability• IMO regulatory compliance• High availability and operational flexibility• Local industrial base involvementThe Aegir twin skeg hull-form is based on a proven commercial design extendingdouble-hull protection to bunkers as well as cargo tanks and capable of handlingwarships’ waste water discharges responsibly.Aegir’s propulsion configuration facilitates standard naval auxiliary practices forreliable and efficient operation at task force speeds over extended periods, yet isflexible and economic at all other times.Skipskonsulent is an independentNorwegian marine consultancy anddesign company with a globalreputation for expert and innovativetailored designs of tankers and othercommercial vessels. It is a memberof the Vik-Sandvik Group.Adopting commercial design rules means local shipyards are able to buildand support Aegir. The baseline design makes allowances for a number ofcapability-enhancing options from the outset, making the Aegir approach evenmore attractive.BMT Defence Services is Europe’sleading independent centre ofexcellence in naval design andengineering with 17 years experiencein designing and supporting navalauxiliaries, warships and submarines. It is a member of the BMT groupof companies.
