It’s an uncommonconnection, for sure. Rollingplains vs. snow-cappedmountains. America’s Heartlandvs. the West Coast.Aside from starting with thesame letter of the alphabet,Oklahoma and Oregon seeminglyhave little in common.Perhaps that’s what makesthe story worth telling. It’sthe story of an uncommonconnection sprung from acommon commitment and thepower of persistence fueled byfaith.Established in Portland, Oregon,in 1956, Columbia ChristianCollege closed in 1993due to financial strains and aneventual loss of accreditation.Faced with the prospect of aonce-vibrant campus goingpermanently dark, the late Dr.Don Gardner, the last presidentof Columbia Christian, traveledto various Church of Christ-affiliatedinstitutions to ask forassistance.Former OC president Dr. J.Terry Johnson led a group toPortland to visit the campus. As legend has it, they werecaptivated by the passion of thestudents they met – studentswho didn’t want ColumbiaChristian to die.In 1993, Oklahoma Christianofficially agreed to step into thegap. With capital invested, bothhuman and financial, Christianhigher education experienced arebirth in the Pacific Northwest– Cascade College was born. When the doors opened in thefall of 1994, 119 students filledthe classrooms.“We accepted anyone with apulse!” laughed Dr. Brian Simmons,a 1987 OC graduate andprofessor of communication atCascade. “The biggest challenge,I think, was in creatingsomething from the ground up.There was a sense in which wewere doing that, and there wasa sense in which we werenot doing that because,as the branchcampus of OC,we had their wisdom and theirguidance.”Simmons will proudly tellanyone: He was the very firstfull-time faculty member to joinCascade College.“I will be here until the dayI die,” he often says. And he’sserious.Other OC alumni, as well asfaculty and staff, also made themove to Portland. People likeCascade’s first vice president,Dr. Kevin Jacobs, Dr. Arlis andSuzanne Wood, Dr. Mickey andJane Banister, and Dr. John andCynthia Fletcher – just to namea few.Dr. Gary Tandy (74), professorof English, signed on forthat first year as well. For him,Cascade was an opportunity toleave “Corporate America” andreturn to teaching.“For several years, I had thisdissatisfaction with what I wasdoing. I think it mostly had todo with the fact that I wasn’tteaching,” he said. “When I reallykind of examined myself, Ithought that in a way, I’d reallygotten away from my dream.”Anyone on campus thosefirst few years will agree: itwasn’t easy. Both Simmons andTandy laugh when recalling themultiple hats they’ve worn tohelp keep programs running.“Having been here 11 years, Ihave to stop and remind myselfthat we had just five facultymembers that first year. That’sit,” he said. “We’re not a hugefaculty now, but we continue togrow. We have at least two fulltimefaculty members in mostof our areas now.”Dr. Bill Goad (79), a oncecommonface on the OCcampus, moved his family toPortland in the fall of 2002to assume the role of provostand chief operating officer. Hesays what sets Cascade apartfrom many other schools is its“servant spirit,” as well as theunique closeness of the campuscommunity.“Everywhere that you find aChristian college, you find thatthe church is stronger,” Goadsaid. “You definitely find thathere.”It’s a good thing, too. VISION SPRING 2006 Transforming lives for Christian faith, leadership, and service.

Oregon and Washington have the highestproportion of religiously-unaffiliatedand self-identified “nonreligious” residentsin the nation. It’s a place rich with opportunitiesto positively influence lives for theLord.“Somebody has to be in the PacificNorthwest for the kids that are here,” Simmonssaid. “People need us in this area ofthe country, and a lot of us here believethis is what we’ve been called to do.”To step onto Cascade’s small campuswould be a very strange experience formany current OC students and recentalums. But the campus reminds Tandy ofwhat Oklahoma Christian was like when hewas a student.Simmons says he often wonders if OC’spioneers – alumni from Central Christianin Bartlesville – might feel right at home atCascade.“There’s a great sense of communityat OC, but at Cascade, you literally knoweverybody on campus,” Goad said. “Therefore,we build a lot of close, personal relationships. The sense of unity is enhancedbecause of our smaller size.”With a current enrollment of around 300students, one of Cascade’s greatest assets isits ability to offer more hands-on attentionto students.“Even though many students may havecome here initially for the Christian fellowshipand small community, I think we’vedone a good job of keeping quality educationas our priority,” Tandy said.Optimism is rising at both OC andCascade that the relationship between thetwo campuses will continue to grow. Thestrategic advantages of a branch campussetup are many, even when distance – anddifferences – pose occasional challenges.OC’s uncommon connection to a smallcampus in Portland, Oregon, shows theuniversity’s commitment to advancingChristian higher education.“For me, the great fit between OklahomaChristian and Cascade College is thatCascade is OC’s most recent and, I think, largest gift to the Kingdom,” Simmonssaid. “OC had the faith, and they had thecourage, to take on this enterprise whenothers did not.”Cascade is at a crucial point in itsbrief history and, according to OCpresident Mike O’Neal, “is poised forsignificant progress and long-rangesuccess.”Cascade College is celebrating its50th year in Portland and will mark thissuccess with an alumni summit and reunionweekend June 22-25. Love thyNEIGHBOROC students spend breakassisting storm victimsTo many students, Fall Break is a time torelax or make their first trip home since thebeginning of the school year to visit familyand friends. But for 120 OC students, faculty andstaff members, thebreak gave them theopportunity to serveothers. It also gave Houston-areaOC alumniDonna Sue Arnold(77) and Joyce Swanson(73), a memberof OC’s NationalAlumni Council, thechance to serve theiralma mater.“It was talked about for weeks afterwardthat these college kids had come downon a bus to help clean up,” Swanson said.“The community was surprised to see anorderly group of kids that came down justto help.”OC students started looking for waysto help those affected by HurricanesKatrina and Rita after seeing and hearingof the devastation left by the disasters. Inresponse to these inquiries, OC dean ofstudents Neil Arter began making contactwith alumni in the area.Arter contacted Arnold and beganworking out details for a trip to help withthe relief effort. Arnold, along with otherOC alumni, works closely with the ImpactHouston Church of Christ.“The Impact Church is set up and recognizedin Houston as a place that helpspeople,” Arnold said. “They’re recognizedby the Red Cross. A lot of churches allover the country were sending suppliesthere to aid in the relief effort.”Arnold helped put Arter in touch withImpact minister Wes Fikes, who organizedthe details of what the group would do andwhere it would work. She aided in the relief effort by workingat Impact to hand out supplies and helpdisplaced families. The group slept and ate lunch and dinnerat Impact, but did most of its workthrough the Thomas Boulevard Churchof Christ in PortArthur, Texas, located about anhour outside ofHouston.Elders of thechurch sentgroups out todifferent memberswho neededhelp. The groupscleaned up treesand debris andmoved them out to the road for city trucksto remove.Arnold contacted Swanson about helpingprovide meals forthe large group. Localrestaurants and other areachains donated food tohelp feed the group.Swanson also joinedthe group, which includedher son Stephen, in assistingthe cleanup effort onthe final day of the trip.Stephen is a sophomoreengineering major atOklahoma Christian.“That day was a lot offun,” Swanson said. “Itwas neat to see how hardthe kids were working. The only frustration they had was that theygot through early, so they just started to goto the neighbors’ yards.”The students also spent that Sundayin worship with the Thomas Boulevardcongregation, something Swanson believedto be just as uplifting as the physical workdone by the group“I think they understood that it was justas important that we spent that time withthem in worship, and that time encouragingthem, as it was going and cleaning up thedebris,” Swanson said. While at Oklahoma Christian, Swansonhelped Dr. Stafford North and also didservice projects and participated in theOutreach program. She now attends theFirst Colony Church of Christ in SugarLand, Texas.Arnold is thankful that she has the opportunityto work with a church that putsits focus on service, something instilled inher while at OC. Her daughter, Amanda, also attended Oklahoma Christian this year.“I appreciate Impact Church and theirwork with the inner city and the lessfortunate of the world, and the opportunitiestheir structure gives people to serve,”Arnold said. “I believe my life was impactedby being able to go to OklahomaChristian as opposed to astate school somewhere.I learned to be a servant, wherever I was and whateverI was doing.”Arnold also wants studentsto remember serviceis something they shouldstrive to do their entirelives.“I believe it’s importantthat, as students, kids starttaking advantage of theopportunity to serve,”Arnold said. “And thatthey follow that throughfor the rest of their livesand remember that Jesus called us to serveothers. It was good to see these studentsalready doing that.”by Tyler Hancock (07) VISION SPRING 2006 Transforming lives for Christian faith, leadership, and service.

OC launches EagleConnection, a websitehelping alumni reuniteWhen Michael and Christi Clark recentlyunpacked and settled into their new homein Battle Creek, Michigan, it wasn’t longbefore they let OC know of their newmove, their new baby (Carson Ryan), andMichael’s new marketing job with Kellogg’sCorporation. When the alumni office receives theinformation, it’s updated in OC’s alumnidatabase so the Clarks will continue toreceive mailings from their alma mater. Theinfo also is posted on the online versionof Milestones on the OC website (www.oc.edu/alumni) and is printed in VISION.The job gets done, eventually, and theClarks stay connected and their friends getto see their news. But now, all that is goingto change for the better with the introductionof Eagle Connection. It’s a new web-based data managementsystem that will transform the way alumniconnect in faster and more accurate ways.Alumni Relations Director Stephen Eck(92) can’t help but smile when he talksabout it.“Eagle Connection is a very good thing,”he said. “We will be able to connect alumniin more ways than ever before – by major, graduation year, clubs, activities … evengeographic region.”“We, as alumni, have longed for thisservice for a long time,” Eck said. Nowtechnology is making it happen.Eagle Connection is scheduled to goonline later this spring. Alumni can log inand have the ability to choose to share theirinformation with other alumni.“It’s similar to popular online reunionservices like classmates.com,” Eck said.“But ours is free and secure.”“My wife and I move often, and it wouldbe nice to know alumni in our new area,”Michael Clark (98) said.Clark started his career with Kellogg’s asa sophomore at OC, and has been movingup the ranks over the last 12 years.“Ever since graduation, we’ve been movingfrom position to position within theorganization. I’ve had the opportunity todo operations, retail sales and headquartersales. Now I’m in marketing withKellogg’s. It’s a two-year stint,” Clarksaid.James BottomsWith Eagle Connection, Clarkwill have a better opportunityto swap tips and struggles aboutannual plans, marketing strategiesand branding issues withfellow alumni who are in similarpositions. And next time they move, asimple logon to Eagle Connectionwill make it easier for theClarks to tell OC about theirnew location.B. James (Bobby) Bottoms(93), operations director forMountain Hardwear in Richmond,California, says havingeasier access to fellow alumnicould help his business.“As a business executive, I regularlystrive to build a networkof potential vendors, customersand employees that have a similarvalue system,” Bottoms said.“Being able to easily locate otherOC graduates who might fit intothese categories would be a huge benefit tohelping my business grow.”Bottoms expects he’ll be logging on toEagle Connection often and hopes to beable to get information about OC events VISION SPRING 2006 Transforming lives for Christian faith, leadership, and service.

More than 7,000alumni verified their informationwith the publisher, and 1,100alumni bought the directory.“We were blown away by theresponse,” Eck said. “Our alumniare longing for this connection.”Eck said other interesting EagleConnection features includealumni video and text profiles, and a career mentoring servicethat will include posts of jobs andinternships, enabling alumni tobecome mentors to new graduatesand current students. Also, alumni can use the serviceto purchase tickets to campusevents such as Homecoming, athletic events and Spring Sing. And they can plan alumni chapterevents in their own communitiesor participate in online discussions. The possibilities are exciting. However, what about the futureof the Milestones section in VI-SION? “Lord, show me who I canbless today.”Those words were written last July byDr. Kim Gaither in a prayer journal thatwas given to her by her daughter, Brianna, last Mother’s Day. Brianna read thosewords at her mother’s funeral on Nov. 23,2005.To have raised a daughter who couldstand and speak at such an occasionis a testament to the kind of life KimGaither lived. Her daughter carried on theexample of her mother, blessing others bysharing her mother’s words of faith.Kimberley Kay (Herron) Gaithergraduated from Oklahoma Christian in1981, returned there to teach in 1988 andwas serving as Professor of Biology at thetime of her death on Nov. 19, 2005.Kim was diagnosed with a rare andviolently aggressive breast cancer in 2001.She fought it hard and was in remissionfor 18 months before tumors reappearedlast year.Kim, who received OC’s Gaylord Chairfor Distinguished Teaching in 2004, helda B.S. degree in biology/chemistry fromOklahoma Christian and M.S. and Ph.D.degrees in microbiology and immunologyfrom the University of Oklahoma HealthSciences Center.May 19, 2005 STFather. I feel so inward focused these days. Lifeis so much more enjoyable when others – familyand friends – are my focus. Help me be content inevery and any circumstance. - Kim’s JournalFor anyone who knew Kim – whetheras a fellow student more than 25 yearsago, or as someone who was blessed tohear her sing, or as her friend, or as astudent who sat in her classroom the daybefore she died – she exemplified courage, determination and an abiding trust inGod.Joseph Thurman was one of thestudents who was in Dr. Gaither’s lastmicrobiology class.“Last semester was a defining timein my life. We were wrapped up in Dr.Gaither’s journey through her treatments, going from fear at the announcementof the brain tumor, to great hope at thetreatment in Pittsburgh, to confusionand despair as her condition suddenlyworsened, to sudden shock and grief ather death,” he said.“That emotional rollercoaster actuallytaught us all a lot about life, faith, and theimpact we are each capable of makingon those around us,” said Thurman, whoplans to attend medical school.Kim made an impact on everyone– immediate and long-lasting impressionsthat remain clear in the hearts and mindsof many who shared their memoriesabout her on the OC website.Judith (Bennyhoff) White (79) wrote,“I met Kim during Neat Week before ourfreshman year in college. We instantlybecame friends and I watched Davidspot Kim on a hill singing during adevotional one night, during our firstweek of freshman year. He scooted overby her and from that moment on theywere together. Kim was always there tolisten, trim your hair, laugh – she was justa great presence to be around. I especiallyremember our Chorale trips freshman andsophomore years. Yes, our loss is heaven’sgain.”And for Kim (Smith) Hart (82), “Iremember so many things about Kim! Shehad such a giving and caring personality. You could see that she always walked thewalk of Jesus. My fondest memory ofKim was when she directed Spring Singfor Gamma Rho in 1980. patient with all of us, but especially me.You see, I can’t sing or ‘choreograph’ andshe was always there to encourage me nomatter how bad I was doing! She truly diduse her gifts to glorify God.”“My brother, David Smith, who hadKim as a biology teacher 10 years later, said that she was one of the best teachersbecause of her ability to communicatehard material in a way that others couldnot. He said that her patience andencouragement were evidence of heralways glorifying our Lord with her Godgiventalents.”And Valerie (Wright) Sisk wrote thisto Dr. Gaither’s children: “Your motherbelieved in me when others did not. I washer student in 1994. She didn’t give meany breaks and I didn’t pass her class. Ithought she was being mean at the time!I am now a mother of two and it is onlybecause I care about them that I insist theydo their very best. Your mother is still awoman I think about when I don’t believein my abilities as a mother or teacher. Sheis truly an inspiration to me.”Oct. 31 SLord, your perfect peace is beyond myunderstanding. You have given me all I need. I feelrested, calm, strong and ready to face anything bythe grace of your strong hand. Cover my family.Give them assurance that you are in control. Theevil one has no control over me. None.Thurman says his most vivid memoryof Kim was from right before she left forPittsburgh on Halloween. She came toclass in full costume, not as Dr. Gaither, but as a microorganism named “KimGaitheriacea,” a corruption of KimGaither.“The entire class had bought her 75pink roses as a show of our love andsupport as she went to Pittsburgh (fortreatment). Dr. Gaither, however, was notDr. Gaither and would not leave character, creating a very awkward, funny andtouching scene all at once as 25 studentstried to show their love to someone whowas there in body (under the frizzy hair, black clothes and dark makeup), but wasnot going to break her act to be there inperson,” Thurman said.November 14 SPlease help me accept with grace and patiencethe test results today. Thank you for increasedstrength. And for the support you surround mewith all the time. Prayer warriors, card sendersand food preparers you are moving right now forour benefit. As her family, students and friendscontinue on without Kim, there is anotherspecial group of friends who are grieving– Kim’s colleagues at OC.The day before she died – weak, in awheelchair and in pain – Kim insistedon giving a lecture to her microbiologystudents. They had a test scheduled thefollowing Monday and she told her familyand others who were concerned about herthat her students would not be preparedwithout that lecture. She gave the lecture that Friday … butthe students did not take the test thatMonday.“Instead, Dr. (Molly) Hill came in andwe spent the entire hour talking aboutDr. Gaither’s life and impact on all of us.There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Thatday was one of the most memorable inmy college career thus far, and was goodfor all of us in the sense that it gave usa sense of peace and closure,” Thurmansaid. “Not enough can be said about Dr.Hill and the guiding light she was for all ofus during that time and for the rest of thesemester.”The class eventually took that test.Thurman made an A.Hill also spoke on behalf of the facultyat the funeral. She shared sweet storiesabout Kim’s reputation among students asthe “velvet knife,” and how even thoughher fellow professors might sometimes becalled cantankerous, no one could ever say“no” to Kim.“For a woman as intelligent, personable, talented, beautiful and self-confidentas you could ever know … she wasnonetheless as unpretentious and trulyhumble as you could ever know,” Dr. Hillsaid. “Kim taught many lessons. Thismay be the most important. She alwaystold you, ‘I have learned that you are notdefined by what you do; rather, you aredefined by whom you love.’”July 10 SPraise you God. 3Waysto save or pre-pay for collegePennies saved now makefuture OC education moreaffordableThanks (or no thanks) to inflation, thecost of going to college goes up every year.Since 1958, national averages haveshown tuition rate increases of 8 percentper year, which is about twice the generalrate of inflation. In recent years, some stateuniversities have raised tuition by 10 to 20percent from one year to the next. While OC’s recent tuition increases havebeen minimal by comparison, it’s safe toassume tuition will cost more in two tothree years than it does now.But that doesn’t have to be the case foryou.Beat inflation by pre-paying tuition attoday’s prices through the Independent529 Plan or invest in a Coverdell and/or529 Savings plan and let the magic ofcompounding interest work for you! Readon for more information. If you still havequestions, feel free to call us at (405) 425-5190.State-Sponsored 529 PlansNamed after a section of the InternalRevenue Code, the Qualified State TuitionProgram (or 529 Plan) formally recognizesthe need for families to set aside money forcollege.Due to federal and state tax advantages,Section 529 plans quickly have become thecollege savings plan of choice for manyAmerican families. 529 plans allow yourmoney to be set aside and grow federally(tax free) as long as it’s used for futurepost-secondary education, tuition, fees, supplies, books and certain room andboard costs. Assets can be used at any accreditedpost-secondary institution in theUnited States.Programs are administered by a stateagency and differ from state to state.Because students are not required to attendcollege in the state where their 529 planmoney is invested, you have the freedomto invest in whichever 529 plan you believeis best. However, most financial advisorsagree it’s usually wise to check your homestate’s plan first. Many plans offer adeduction on your state income tax.To get started, simply visit www.savingforcollege.com for an informativeoverview of all the various state-sponsoredplans.Enrollment in a 529 savings plan is easy, and everyone is eligible!Independent 529 PlanThe Independent 529 Plan is the first529 plan to be sponsored by colleges ratherthan by the states. Administered by TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing, Inc., this plan isdifferent from any other 529 plan becauseit guarantees the purchaser at the outsetthat when the beneficiary enrolls at a membercollege, the certificate may be redeemedfor a specific percentage of tuition. This is how the plan works: Obtain VISION SPRING 2006 Transforming lives for Christian faith, leadership, and service.

an enrollment kit by calling (888)718-7878 or visiting the websiteat www.independent529plan.org. Thenpurchase a certificate that guaranteesa certain percentage of tuition, whichvaries depending on each of the 250participating institutions’ current tuitionand certificate discount rate set by thatcollege for the year the certificate waspurchased. (A certificate purchased for$10,000 might guarantee a year’s worthof tuition at College A or one-half year’stuition at College B.)The website provides a tool tocalculate the tuition benefit at differentmember colleges. Students choose theircollege after they have applied andbeen accepted through the standardadmission process. (Oklahoma Christianis an Independent 529 Plan participatinginstitution).Certificates are held for three yearsminimum before redemption and aretransferable to other family members, including first cousins and in-laws.After one year, they may be refundedor rolled over into another 529 plan;withdrawals used for enrollment at nonmembercolleges, including publics, arenot subject to federal income tax.The Independent 529 plan offersseveral unique advantages. First, theIndependent 529 plan charges no feesof any kind to the consumer. Second, colleges must offer a minimum of 0.5percent per year off current tuitionrates. Third, because it is a prepaidtuition plan instead of a savings plan, your investment is protected against anymarket risks. Assuming tuition increasescontinue at their historical rate, theIndependent 529 plan may provide thebest financial return possible.Coverdell Education Savings AccountCreated in 1997 as Education IRAs,and improved dramatically in 2001,Coverdell ESAs are a compelling savingsvehicle for parents who meet the contributionlimits. Parents filing jointly withadjusted gross income below $190,000may contribute up to $2,000 per child, per year, to a Coverdell ESA.The contribution is not deductible, but all earnings grow tax-deferred, to bedistributed tax-free if used to pay thebeneficiary’s college expenses. $2,000per yearmay not seem like much, but it adds upif you start early. Contributing $2,000 peryear for 18 years with an earnings rateof 10 percent would accumulate around$100,000.While both Coverdell ESAs andSection 529 plans offer the prospect ofpotentially tax-free earnings, Coverdellsoffer the flexibility to choose the specificinvestments you desire, unlike Section529s. This is a big advantage for thosewho want to direct their own investmentprogram. (Most fund companies orbrokerages can set up a Coverdell ESAfor you, allowing you access to their fullrange of investment products). In addition, the favored tax treatmentof Coverdell earnings extends to coverelementary and secondary schoolexpenses. The list of qualified expensesis lengthy and includes obvious items liketuition and books, as well as non-obviousitems like uniforms, transportation, computers and Internet access for thefamily during the years the beneficiary isin school.Contributors now are allowed tocontribute to both a Coverdell ESAand Section 529 plan in the same year(although contributions to both typesof plans are combined for gift taxpurposes). This is great for parentswho want to save more than the $2,000per year allowed in a Coverdell, or forparents who want to save for collegein a 529 plan while also saving forelementary and secondary school costs ina Coverdell ESA.College FundingOptions forGrandparents:Grandparents paying collegeexpenses for grandchildren havean additional option by fundingan Oklahoma Christian UniversityDeferred Charitable Gift Annuity.Oklahoma Christian can restructurea standard gift annuity agreementso that instead of payingincome to the donor over one ortwo lifespans, the gift annuity payoutoccurs over a set number of years, and is payable to the grandchild topay for educational expenses. Here’s how it works. A grandparentmakes a tax-deductible gift toOklahoma Christian. OC then issuesa deferred gift annuity agreementthat will pay income to the grandchildduring his or her college years. This arrangement is especiallyattractive when funded with gifts ofhighly-appreciated property such asstocks or land. These gifts escapemuch of the capital gains tax thatwould normally be paid if the assetwere sold outright and the moneywas given directly to the grandchild. In addition to the friendly capitalgains tax treatment, an OklahomaChristian University Deferred CharitableGift Annuity also will providean excellent income tax deduction– even moreso than a standard giftannuity agreement since the annuitypayout is compressed into a shorterterm. For more information, or toreceive a personalized OC CollegeGift Annuity illustration, contactStephen Eck at (405) 425-5118 orby email at stephen.eck@oc.edu.Transforming lives for Christian faith, leadership, and service.VISION SPRING 2006 10

The first floor ofeach residence hall has a fitness center. Thesecond and third floors of each residencehall have a private TV lounge. There arelaundry facilities on all three floors of eachresidence hall. A new central mechanicalplant enables heating and cooling controlin individual rooms. Each room in these “smart residences”has wired and wireless access to the universitynetwork, email and the Internet.Even the new laundry facilities are “smartsystems,” with a new feature called LaundryView. This feature enables the washersand dryers to email students over thecampus WiFi Network when their cycle isfinished or when a machine is available. The new halls are further enhanced bythe three-story University Commons.
