A Big Secret CQ caught up with Duncan Adams at St Wilfrid’s Hospice to find out more about its big secret at Towner. As part of a special fundraising event, St Wilfrid’s Hospice has teamed up with Towner to help increase awareness of the charity and raise money for its Campaign Hospice Reach. Duncan Adams, marketing director at St Wilfrid’s Hospice, said: “The hospice is an amazing place. You can’t really describe the atmosphere; it’s a very happy place. It’s all about living the rest of your life as comfortably as you can. “As a charity, 85 per cent of our funding comes from our community. We are trying to expand our reach, getting more people to understand what we do.” The Big Art Secret will help raise money for Campaign Hospice Reach and will involve an exhibition and auction of postcard-sized artwork. Anyone can take part, however artistic they are. St Wilfrid’s Hospice ambassador Charles Grimaldi said: “It’s fun, it’s free, we are not asking anyone for money, just to have some fun and help the hospice. It’s very exciting.” Local people and celebrities have joined in the fun, including Prime Minister David Cameron, David Hockney and David Dimbleby, the patron of the new campaign. Each entrant can design their postcard however they wish but must sign the back of the artwork. Duncan said: “There has been a real diverse mix of people, ages and talent taking part. We are encouraging everybody to have a go, as every penny counts.” Entry envelopes with instructions are available at both St Wilfrids Hospice, based at Mill Gap Road in Eastbourne, and Towner. Charles added: “Lucy at Eastbourne Framing Centre has also offered to frame the 20 Cultural Quarterly Autumn 2012 postcards after the auction.” The works will be exhibited at Towner for a week from October 13 and will then be auctioned. The artists will remain secret until the postcards have been sold. Duncan said: “When the auction closes, we can identify the David Hockney and see if anyone got his artwork for very little. Towner has been great at supporting and helping us with this. We couldn’t do this without them; their knowledge has been invaluable.” Charles added: “The exciting bit is your artwork could be next to David Hockney’s or the Prime Minister’s. Ronnie Corbett has also done two lovely ones with a personalised letter explaining what each of them are about.
