Coastal Celebration CQ talks to Coastal Currents director Sarah Yates about what visitors to Hastings can expect from this year’s festival. Coastal Currents arts festival in Hastings on September 8–23 aims to showcase local talent and inspire more people to create and present their work to a wider audience. Sarah Yates, director of Coastal Currents, said: “We’re also hoping to enable our audiences to look at their town and surroundings with a new pair of eyes and perhaps to fall in love with it again or reflect upon the forgotten.” Coastal Currents was created by Hastings Borough Council thirteen years ago and has been managed by Creative Coast Ltd on behalf of the council since 2009. The festival covers Hastings, St Leonards on sea and Rother. Sarah said: “This year, Hastings has seen the opening of the Jerwood Gallery in the heart of the old town, and the strength of the visual arts scene in the area has risen considerably over the years. Coastal Currents’ ethos has tried to reflect local and regional artistic talent, creating a diverse event that is suitable for the all the community to enjoy.” Local artists from the region present and sell their work in a wide range of media in Open Studios, traditionally a large part of the festival. Other events range from outdoor performances, live art, workshops, installations, film, site-specific work and artist and professional development talks. Sarah said: “Most of the artists and organisers come from the local area; however, there are also artists from different parts of the country and international accents. This year, our artist in residence will be Strange Cargo, a Folkestone based group specialising in delivering highquality participatory arts projects. Strange Cargo will be working with the local community to 8 Cultural Quarterly Autumn 2012 create a permanent sculpture in St Leonards on sea. “Brighton’s famous Karavan Ensemble will present their sitespecific adaptation of Anima, a beautiful piece reworked especially for the festival in collaboration with local artist Yumino Seki. Polish artist Marcin Dudek will dramatically transform Stade Project Space with his installation Exico Vol 2, and London based Kate Murdoch is bringing 10x10, a “comment on humanity” exhibition that is also an object exchange ritual. Telling Stories returns with a touring exhibition by artists from Hastings and Margate as well. “There is also the special commission The Seaside Hotel, a collaborative project from local artists Sharon Hyward and Miranda Sharp and Greek artist Marina Tsartsara.
