Moving forward together
Penny Hardaker
At the time of writing I have been
in post for just two months and
during that time my feet have barely
touched the ground!
My priority since joining BsDhT
has been to meet as many members as
possible and to immerse myself in the
workings of the society.
i was delighted to be appointed
to the post of BsDhT Business
Development Manager. i have worked
in the dental profession for a number
of years and my time spent working
with Dental hygienists and Therapists
has always been most rewarding:
your enthusiasm and commitment
to the profession is second to none.
furthermore, the achievements of the
society serve as an example to the
dental profession as a whole.
My role is to formulate a new
strategic Plan for the society which
will serve as a reference document
and a guide for future planning. it is
crucial that this is a living document
with inbuilt flexibility and, most
importantly, reflects the views and
wishes of BsDhT members. it is in
this regard that i want to speak with as
many of you as possible and i welcome
constructive criticism and input. i will
be available at the ohC in liverpool so
please come and speak with me and let
me know your views and suggestions.
if you are unable to join us for this
meeting i would be delighted to hear
from you via email.
one of my first tasks has been to
review the relationships that we have
with our Trade Partners and i have
been holding a series of meetings with
them to listen to their views and learn
how we can move forward together in
the future. i have been delighted with
their response and the high regard in
which BsDhT is held. This bodes well
for the future as we are approaching a
changing and challenging time for the
whole dental profession. in addition
we are living through tough economic
times and budgets in all quarters are
stretched. organisations which are
prepared and equipped to meet this
challenge will emerge stronger in the
future and i am confident that this
includes our own organisation.
in addition we also plan to relaunch
Dental Health. This is intended
to give it a facelift but to keep the
excellent clinical articles, CPD and
news. There are some exciting times
ahead and we want the journal to
reflect this and provide the information
that members seek – what would you
like included?
i am looking forward to liverpool
and to meeting as many of you as
possible at the conference and at
regional group meetings. Please do not
hesitate to contact me as your input is
crucial to our future success.

BSDHT Council would like to invite any interested BSDHT members to apply for the role of Council Observer.
Council agreed that it would make the work of the BSDHT Council more transparent to members if
Council meetings were to be opened to invited observers.
A number of members of the Society may attend full Council meetings purely as observers, although numbers
will be limited due to space. Applicants will be accepted on a first come basis and no expenses will be paid.
Meetings are held four times a year in Birmingham.
The next meeting will be held on Friday 25 January 2013.

Peri-implant disease in
the limelight
The Association of Dental
Implantology is holding an ‘Expert
Panel Consensus Meeting on
Monitoring, Diagnosis and Treatment
of Peri-implant Disease’. The oneday
event, which will bring together
experts from across Europe to
discuss peri-implant disease, will
take place at the Savoy Place,
London on the 19 November.
following the ADi’s extremely
successful ‘focus on Peri-implantitis’
meeting in 2010, which covered mostly
the aetiology of peri-implant disease,
ADi President Prof. Cemal Ucer felt an
urgent need to invite an expert panel
to debate and assess the best available
evidence on monitoring, diagnosis and
treatment of peri-implant disease. The
aim of the meeting is to create and
establish ‘best practice guidelines’ on
how to monitor and treat peri-implant
disease based on the expert panel’s
conclusions.

The General Dental Council (GDC) has produced a
new fact sheet for patients across the UK to help
them understand what responsibility their dental
professional has to make sure their indemnity or
insurance is up to date.
The GDC has had measures in place for more than
two decades requiring registrants to have adequate

Although the true prevalence of
peri-implant disease is not known,
literature suggests that peri-implant
mucositis occurs in about 80% of
subjects (50% of sites) restored with
implants, and peri-implantitisin 28%
to 56% of subjects (12-40% of sites)
unless implants are maintained
adequately (lindhe J, Meyle J. Periimplant
diseases: Consensus report
of the sixth european workshop
on Periodontology. J Clin Periodontol
2008; 35 (suppl. 8): 282-285). This
means that there will be an increasing
demand for the monitoring and
treatment of this condition, with an
increasing number of implants placed
each year. Moreover, ADi’s recent
survey of more than 200 experienced
implantologists suggests that there
is lack of consensus on how best to
monitor or treat peri-implant disease
during its various stages.
ADi President Cemal Ucer is
particularly looking forward to the
meeting because the ADi’s ‘best
practice guidelines’ will be debated and
approved by the expert panel in front
of the audience before being publically
issued at the end of the meeting.

The new fact sheet guides patients through what is
expected of their dental professional as well as what to do
if something does go wrong.
Chief executive of the GDC, evlynne Gilvarry said:
“We are working to increase the current, substantial
protections for patients, by seeking powers to require proof of
insurance or indemnity as a condition of being registered to
practise as a dentist or dental care professional. We expect to
have these powers by October 2013.”
every time the GDC investigates a complaint about a
dental professional it checks that they have adequate and
appropriate indemnity or insurance in place – even if the
complaint is about something else.
The GDC can stop dental professionals working in the
UK if they are found not to have indemnity or insurance
and the new powers being sought will mean dental
professionals not only have to have insurance before they
can practise but declare they have it every year after that.

CPD: plan it, do it, log it!
The General Dental Council (GDC)
is urging dental care professionals
(DCPs) to keep track of their
continuing professional development
(CPD) and to ensure they keep hold
of any attendance certificates they
have received.
on 31 July 2013 more than
40-thousand DCPs will reach the end of
their first CPD cycle. This means that
at this time you must have completed
150 hours of CPD and have until 28
August 2013 to declare the hours that
you have completed or risk losing your
GDC registration.
There are two types of CPD –
verifiable and non-verifiable. All DCPs
must complete at least 50 hours of
verifiable CPD, and a combined total of
at least 150 hours, in each cycle.
for CPD to be counted as verifiable
it must meet four conditions:

Why is CPD so important?
CPD is study, training, courses,
seminars, reading and other activities
which advance the professional
development of dental professionals.
The purpose of CPD is to provide
high-quality care. it’s very important
that the CPD registrants do take into
account the needs of their patients and
relevance to their practise.
As part of the GDC’s on-going
review of its CPD requirements a
consultation will be launched in late
october. it will be asking for views on
the proposals for an enhanced scheme
of mandatory CPD - anyone wishing to
take part should keep an eye on www.

Move to plain packaging
The British Dental Health
Foundation (BDHF) has
welcomed the decision by
the Australian High Court to
reject the legal challenge by
the tobacco industry against
the tobacco plain packaging
legislation. The new Australian
law will require cigarettes to be
sold in olive green packets, with
graphic images warning of the
consequences of smoking
The Australian high Court decision
comes in the wake of a UK-wide
consultation on government plans to
introduce mandatory plain packaging
for tobacco, which closed on 10
August. The BDhf supported a joint
response with Ash, in favour of the
consultation, as well as contributing
information, statistics and opinion on
the dangers of smoking and tobacco
use on oral health and in particular
mouth cancer.
The new legislation, which will be
enforced in Australia by 1 December
2012, means that all tobacco products
must be in plain packaging. This will
restrict tobacco industry logos, brand
imagery, colours and promotional
text appearing on packs. Brand and
product names will be in a standard
colour, position and standard font size
and style.

executive of the BDhf said: “This
is an important landmark ruling
for Australia. And i think it sends
out a very strong message to the
UK Government. Tobacco and
cigarette smoking are one of the main
contributing factors of mouth cancer.
This year more people will die of this
dreadful disease than all of those who
die from cervical and testicular cancer
combined. smoking can also cause
tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss
and is also one of the main causes of
bad breath.
“The introduction of plain
packaging will not stop everyone
smoking but it would go someway
to make the product look less enticing
on the shelf. The inclusion of graphic
images about the damage tobacco
causes could also have the shockfactor
and may even make people think
before they light up. it will be very
interesting to see what the response in
Australia will be.”

Smokers encouraged to join ‘Stoptober’
Stoptober, the first ever mass quit
attempt for smokers, has been
launched by the Chief Medical
Officer Professor Dame Sally
Davies.
The innovative campaign comes
as smoking remains the biggest killer
in england with half of long-term
smokers dying prematurely from
smoking related diseases.
stoptober which takes place from
1 october and is backed by Cancer
research UK and British heart
foundation is the first 28 day quit
attempt of its kind to encourage the
nation’s eight million smokers to
make the step toward a smoke free
future.
smokers will receive support
and encouragement through TV and
radio advertising which went live on
Monday 10 september, plus a daily
messaging service and roadshows
around the country.
Backing the scheme the
Government’s most senior health
advisor, Chief Medical Officer
Professor Dame Sally Davies said:
“Smoking is still the biggest cause of
premature death in England, taking
more than 100,000 lives in the UK
every year.
“This is the first time that we
have launched a mass quit attempt
like Stoptober. I would encourage
people to get involved.
“To join in, look for Stoptober
online, or ask your local pharmacist
and get your free support pack and
lots of other helpful hints and tips.”

New research from the British
Dental Trade Association (BDTA)
reveals a significant proportion of
patients (20 per cent) are ‘warm’
to a variety of elective treatments,
although currently awareness of
available treatments is quite low.
The BDTA commissioned Bray
leino, one of the UK’s leading market
research agencies within healthcare,
to conduct the research amongst 1,500
members of the general public and
found that patients would welcome
the opportunity to spend more time
talking to their dentist about available
treatments and their pros and cons
to help them make more informed
treatment choices.
The research confirms that patients
have a very high degree of trust in
their dentist, even greater than in their
doctor, with 88% of all respondents
satisfied (46.6% extremely happy and
41.8% fairly happy) with the level of
service they receive.
not only are dentists highly
trusted, but by far the majority of
patients, both nhs and private alike,
found their current dentist by word of
mouth. similarly they would choose a
personal recommendation from family
and friends over any other means of
at random for the user’s smartphone
or iPod Touch. Brush DJ also has links

floss, use interdental brushes and how
to keep fixed braces clean.

good news for dental practices enabling
them to develop an approach to
encourage recommendations knowing
they will be helping people find a
dentist through their preferred route.
Unsurprisingly, fear was found to
be a compelling inhibitor, particularly
amongst infrequent attenders, however
for many patients (59%) a “friendly
and relaxing environment” helps them
to overcome this barrier.
Together with trustworthiness,
“value for money” was cited as the
most motivating of all messages for
infrequent patients. in today’s era of
austerity with rising household bills
and reduced disposable income, clearly
priced personal treatment plans will
resonate well with patients.

Tens of thousands of DCPs
renew their GDC registration
Being registered with the GDC is a legal requirement
for DCPs in the UK. To date, 58,346 dental care
professionals (DCPs) have renewed their registration
with the General Dental Council (GDC).
The annual deadline to pay their retention fee of £120
passed on 31 July 2012 and 4,012 DCPs have now been
removed from the register. Those who didn’t pay on time,
but who wish to return to the register must:
t complete a form to apply for restoration (this will be sent
through the post or can be downloaded at www.gdc-uk.
org);
t have a medical examination and provide a character
reference;
t pay a fee of £144;
t give evidence that they have completed the required
amount of continuing professional development (CPD);
t if they were practising overseas while off the register,
they must provide a letter of good standing from the
relevant authority of the country/state in which they last
worked;

campaign with
Heart Research UK
Healthcare provider Simplyhealth
has just launched a new television
advertising and social media
campaign that will help to raise
money for national heart charity,
Heart Research UK.
The advert, which airs on
digital and terrestrial channels
(from 17 september), states how
research suggests there may be a
link between dental health and
cardiovascular disease. it prompts
viewers to go to the simplyhealth
UK facebook page and “like” an
app. By doing so, they will be
able to read highlights of research
from medical institutes, read free

health guides on dental health and
heart health and watch videos with
experts. simplyhealth will then
donate £1 to heart research UK
for every “like” they receive, up to
£30,000.

Healthy packed lunches for kids
With the new school year underway,
many parents may be struggling
with the process of that infamous
New School Year Resolution: Healthy
Packed Lunches.
The British Dietetic Association
(BDA) is issuing some quick and handy
tips to create, not only healthy packed
lunches, but packed lunches that are
full of flavour and variety.
The BDA is the professional
association for registered dieticians in
Great Britain and northern ireland. it
is the nation’s largest organisation of
food and nutrition professionals with
approximately 7,000 members.

“what children eat at a young age
has a massive impact on their eating
habits for life, so it is essential we get
the younger generation into choosing

fizzy drinks and the same old boring
sandwich day after day. Many adults

Local authorities consult on
fluoridation schemes
A consultation on what local
authorities should do and who they
should involve when considering
water fluoridation schemes has been
launched by Public Health Minister
Anne Milton.
Views are being sought solely on
the process by which local authorities
carry out consultations and decisionmaking
on new and existing
fluoridation proposals – not on the pros
or cons of fluoridation itself.
These changes are prompted
by the abolition of strategic health
Authorities, which currently carry out
this role, and means local authorities
will be given new responsibilities and
powers to improve the health of their
communities.
This will mean ensuring local
people’s opinions on fluoridation are
considered before decisions are made
to adopt, change or end fluoridation
programmes.
This is just one of a raft of
improvements that, from April
2013, will give greater power and
responsibility to local authorities to
make a real impact in improving the
health of their local community.
Public Health Minister Anne
Milton said:
“Decision-making on public health
issues should be made at the local level
where they understand what is needed
and where the community’s voice can
best be heard.
“We want to hear as many views as
possible about how this process should
work when local authorities get their
new powers next year - I encourage
everyone to take part.”

currently have the responsibility for
considering changes to fluoridation
in local areas, but this consultation is
about how this power is taken over by
local authorities.
it will seek views on a range of
processes related to making local
decisions including how public views
are considered and how joint decisions
are made in areas where water supply
covers more than on local authority.
The consultation will be open
for responses from 4 september to
27 november. Any person, business
or organisation with an interest is
encouraged to respond.
Any decisions will only be taken
after full consideration is given to
consultation responses, evidence and
other relevant information.
