President’s Welcome 2012
On behalf of the ADAVB I welcome you to join us at this year’s biennial Convention,
The Art, Science and Ethics of Dentistry 2012. This year’s Convention will again
feature concurrent sessions, allowing a greater choice for delegates, and the
Continual Professional Development Committee has worked hard to provide a
diverse and interesting program, ensuring that there is something for everyone.
We have two highly regarded international keynote speakers this year, in conjunction with a raft
of high calibre national speakers. Dr Linda Greenwall (UK) will speak about the future of aesthetic
dentistry with a minimally invasive approach, including tooth whitening, composite bonding and
microabrasion. Professor Trevor Burke (UK) will introduce the concept of pragmatic aesthetics in the
treatment of tooth wear over two sessions, with an emphasis on bonding and tooth preservation in
an evidence-based approach.
Distinguished local speakers include Professor Ian Meyers, Associate Professor Kerrod Hallett,
Mr Rowan Story and Professor Michael McCullough, sharing their knowledge and expertise across
the worn dentition, dentinal hypersensitivity, medications in dentistry, early childhood caries and
dental ethics.
In addition to the scientific program, there are a number of concurrent conferences that enable
all members of your practice to be involved. The Dental Assistants Conference 2012 is an annual
event with a comprehensive program. A full day Practice management Conference and a conference
for Dental Hygienists developed in conjunction with the DHAAVB, are new additions to the
Convention program. These new components make it possible to include all practice staff in the
Convention Program.
There will also be an opportunity to visit the Australian Dental Industry Association’s exhibition, to
give you the ability to view the latest equipment and materials, making the most of the customary
convention specials and catching up with colleagues.
The Art, Science and Ethics of Dentistry 2012 is sure to be the highlight of the continuing
professional development calendar this year. Together with the incoming ADAVB President,
Dr Gordon Burt, I am looking forward to seeing you and your staff at the Convention.
2012 Victorian Dental Show
The Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA) is pleased to host the 2012 Victorian Dental
Show which is being held in conjunction with this year’s ADA Victorian Branch Convention. It
provides an exciting opportunity for dentists and allied oral healthcare professionals to see the
latest dental products from Australia and overseas.
ADIA recognises and understands the symbiotic relationship that exists between the dental
profession and dental industry. Our members share your commitment to excellence and take pride in
providing quality products necessary to provide optimal dental care outcomes.
ADIA is the peak representative body for the suppliers of dental equipment and plays an increasingly
influential role in improving the technical and regulatory environment in which dental products
are manufactured and distributed in Australia. We value the support of the Australian Dental
Association (ADA) in this task.
On behalf of the members that are exhibiting at the 2012 ADIA Victorian Dental Show, it is with
pleasure that I invite you to the welcome reception in the exhibition area on Friday, 10 August 2012
The Future of Aesthetic Dentistry with a minimal invasive Approach. Part 1.
In the aesthetic driven society that we live in a beautiful smile is an essential asset. There has been an exponential
demand for patients requesting smile improvement. Whilst the previous model of mass veneer placement has cause
mass destruction of healthy teeth there are other simple ways to improve smiles. The current trend is towards
minimally invasive aesthetic dentistry and the lecture will discuss options for treatment and the treatment
planning protocols that need to be in place in order for to accomplish this minimally invasive modality. The lecture
will include tooth whitening techniques, composite bonding, microabrasion and combinations of treatment. New
treatment techniques will focus on minimally invasive aesthetic dentistry.
Clinical Management of Hypersensitivity:
Tooth sensitivity is a common presenting concern
of patients visiting a dental practice. In many
cases the cause may be obvious, while in others it
is far more difficult to establish. There are many
suggested techniques for the management of dentine
hypersensitivity, but these may not always be successful
in all cases, or there may be a recurrence of the
hypersensitivity. These lectures will review the causes
of dentine hypersensitivity, the variation that exists
between different patients, and within different teeth in
the same patient. Diagnostic techniques will be discussed
and a number of approaches to management will covered
to assist the practitioner in assisting patients manage
their hypersensitivity.
Early Childhood Caries:
Despite significant advances in our understanding of
both the biological and socio-behavioural determinants
of childhood diseases, severe caries remains a significant
health issue for many preschool children. Early childhood
caries (ECC) is often well established in the first few
years of life and is potentially the result of poor diet and
inappropriate infant feeding practice. The possibility of
ECC as a predictor of future childhood diseases such as
diabetes and obesity is both new and challenging to our
current paradigm and reconceptualises ECC as a disease of
a modern lifestyle rather than a disease of the teeth alone.
Dr Suzanne Hanlin
Implant Management:
The management of the tooth replacement is often
an interdisciplinary challenge and requires a sound
knowledge of the evidence base for the treatment
options available. To plan for successful restoration of
function and aesthetics for patients planning implant
therapy it is necessary to examine the treatment needs
in the context of oral function, disease activity and
social requirements for treatment. We must involve our
patients in these decisions and fully inform them of the
rationale behind the recommended treatment options,
the risks and benefits, and the long-term maintenance
requirements and expected prognosis. A clear indication
of present and future costs and written plan will
form clear guidelines for an informed consent to the
future care.
Mr Rowan Story AM
Dental Ethics – from Brass Plates to Dragon Tattoos:
Dentistry is a truly remarkable profession. In it’s
relatively short modern history it has developed a
standing and level of scientific integrity and innovation
that places it with the leaders of the health professions
in the developed world. The profession has the
knowledge and clinical skills to almost eradicate dental
disease. However – the pressures of the market
economy, regulation, international trade and workforce
shortages will affect the profession. In this complex
environment it is reasonable to ask whether there is
any longer a place for dental ethics.
The Anthony Roseman Memorial Lecture Program focuses
on dental law and ethics issues.

Endodontic Retreatment— Why, When & How:
A healing response is the usual outcome following
endodontic treatment. In those cases that exhibit
posttreatment disease, understanding the causes
and establishing a diagnosis is essential for improved
outcomes. Whilst several options are available, including
endodontic surgery or extraction, the possibility of
Dentistry and the Law:
“Where we have been and where we are going”
DLA Piper (formally known as Phillips Fox) has handled
liability claims for members of the Australian Dental
Association since the 1960s. David Leggatt will provide
an entertaining look at the evolution of claims by patients
against dentists, through to the plaintiffs’ heyday of
the 1990s, the tort law reforms of the noughties, the
current claims environment against dentists and where
this is likely to head. David will also track a similar course
on the regulation of dentists in Victoria, from the simple
peer review model of the early Dental Board, through
to the current sophistication of the Australian Health
Practitioners Regulation Authority. David will provide
his observations on how Australia sits in relation to the
liability and regulation of dentists as against our colleagues
in Asia, the United Kingdom and the United States. He
will also provide his insights as to how this will impact
on members in the conduct of their day-to-day practise.
The Anthony Roseman Memorial Lecture Program focuses
Professor Trevor Burke (UK)
Introducing the concept of pragmatic aesthetics in the treatment of tooth wear. Part 1.
The impact of the so-called “cosmetic” dentistry, if assessed by the number of dental makeovers in television
programs or in celebrity magazines, has increased substantially in recent years. This has effectively increased the
public’s awareness of their dental appearance, and in turn, may have increased the volume of porcelain laminate
veneers placed, although quantification of this is difficult. What is quantifiable, however,
is that tooth wear is increasing in incidence, especially in younger people, and that the
Session supported by
issues around treatment of this are, therefore, becoming increasingly relevant.
Ethical issues in “dental tourism”:
Chronic diseases, influences on dental treatment:
This talk reviews the current state of international There has been a constant evolution in the understanding
and management of chronic diseases that have an impact
Medications used in Dentistry; indications
Indications, rationale and outcomes in third
This presentation will discuss common medications used While third molar surgery has remained a cornerstone of
in dentistry and indications for prescribing. Further, oral surgery for decades, the indications, rationale and
potential interactions with an increasing myriad of outcomes for this procedure have been most definitely
medications our patients are taking will be discussed. refined. The evolution of evidence based dentistry,
development of government funded guidelines in the United
Kingdom and an increase in Google educated patients,
means that while the indications for third molar removal
remain essentially unchanged, the rationale and decision
making process has ultimately evolved. Access to better
assessment for inferior alveolar nerve injury preoperatively
with cone beam CT imaging, and an increase in the
acceptance to de-coronate third molars as a treatment
modality, has meant that the third molar surgeon can no
longer be complacent and must move with the times! 7

Ageing of the Smile
Facial form and dimensions undergo continuous changes
throughout life and these changes have to be taken
into consideration when deciding on the treatment
modalities in adolescent and adult patients.
The facial changes in vertical and sagittal planes are
rather extensively documented; however individual
differences are common and they have to be carefully
considered.
The changes make us decide if an orthopaedic or
surgical treatment is more suitable and also if the
patient needs extractions or not.
Furthermore, the expected future growth must
be taken into account when finishing orthodontic
treatment of growing patients to ensure that the
final result will continue to be maintained and will
accommodate the future appearance when ageing.
Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) is a
Aged Care:
The Australian population is ageing, and by 2051 it is
estimated that 25% of the population will be aged 65+
years. Over the past 40 years we have seen dramatic
improvements in oral health, and declining rates of
edentulism. Older Australians are now retaining more
teeth, and are at increased risk of dental caries and
periodontal disease. Residents of nursing homes, who
are often physically and cognitively impaired, are at
significant risk of dental disease. It is important for the
general practitioner to have a good understanding of
the challenges in dealing with an ageing population.
Periodontal Review: Indication for
periodontal surgery:
Cause-related therapy forms the basis for managing
most periodontal disease. While periodontal surgery may
play a role in enhancing the long-term preservation of
the periodontium, the necessity for pocket elimination
has been challenged as our understanding of the
pathogenesis of periodontal disease has increased. This
lecture shall highlight the important factors to consider
when assessing the response to cause-related therapy
and will describe the role surgery therapy has to play
in the current management of periodontal disease.
An overview of periodontal surgery will be given with
indications and contraindications explained
Mr Garry Pearson
Dental Politics Update
Garry will provide an overview of recent developments in dental politics, including changes in the dental workforce, access to care
Introducing the concept of pragmatic aesthetics in the treatment of tooth wear. Part 2.
Tooth wear, in the past, was treated by gross destruction of teeth using a turbine drill for crown preparations – a
strange way to treat teeth which were already compromised! However, advances in bonding techniques have
enabled the use of minimally invasive treatment using composite resin bonded to worn surfaces. This presentation
will discuss the concept of pragmatic aesthetics, how to achieve an aesthetic improvement where needed – the
optimisation of bonding agents for this treatment and will indicate the rates of success which might be expected.
All of this will be discussed in the light of current research evidence into the longevity of the techniques described.
• What are the most important attributes required?
• Wording an effective advertisement
• The decision – the recruitment process doesn’t stop here
Ms Kelly Gall Developing a Business Plan
Where to start? Too often we hear about the Dentist who wants to setup around the corner as it’s only a
3 minute walk from home!! Of course, who wouldn’t love to have this convenience, however there’s a little
more to this when looking at a good basis to starting a dental practice. For many, after the family home
this is the most substantial investment they will ever make so we want to get it right. Taking the time
to sit down and write out your Business Plan can be daunting, but it’s an imperative step towards having
the approach to your new business clear in your own mind. Let’s take a look at what turns a passion or
motivation into a long term and sustainable business, and how to take a step out of your business and work
on developing it by goal setting, marketing and attitude!
Ms Karen Communicating Effectively with Co-workers
Marshman This powerful, fun seminar combines unique symbolism and visual learning to teach communication
techniques and wellbeing management, to create positive outcomes and promote positive culture. “Stars
and Black-holes” provides a visual insight to the codes of our communication and the how they generate
or impact on our success, both personally and at work. Participants are immediately able to increase their
confidence, performance and relationships with others.
Ms Sally Recruiting for Team Effectiveness
Rowe-Walser An effective team is much more than the sum of its parts. Recruiting to complement and extend the skills
& Ms Julie of your team requires more than simply ‘liking’ a candidate.
Innovations in Dental Hygiene
Dentistry is changing in innovative ways. To stay at the cutting edge, we have to look at ways of
extending our skills to meet patient demands. This presentation looks at ways to do just that.
Discussing new ways to empower patients to achieve and maintain a high stand of oral health,
introducing tooth whitening and implementing dental photography into hygiene visits. The aim of
the presentation is to encourage delegates to extend their skills, within the limitations of their
professional practicing guidelines.
Session
supported by
AHPRA Matters!
AHPRA administers the Health Practitioner’s Regulation Nation Law Act on behalf of the Dental
Board of Australia. It maintains the register of practitioners and manages the administrative
components of notifications, performance assessments, hearings and compliance with conditions/
undertakings. The process for notification investigation will be described as well as increasing
awareness regarding what practitioners can do to avoid a notification.
Enamel Therapy and Remineralisation
Mapping a treatment plan is only successful when the dental team understands all factors that influence
the caries pattern and prevalence based on medical history, age and lifestyle changes, behaviours and
disease factors. This presentation will showcase several case studies to compare the diverging treatment
plans based on the implementation of a CAMBRA risk assessment tool and activating an individualized
treatment plan using effective steps to prevent and manage early caries and enamel erosion.
Session
supported by
Dental Ethics – from Brass Plates to Dragon Tattoos
Dentistry is a truly remarkable profession. In it’s relatively short modern history it has developed a
standing and level of scientific integrity and innovation that places it with the leaders of the health
professions in the developed world. The profession has the knowledge and clinical skills to almost
eradicate dental disease. However – the pressures of the market economy, regulation, international
trade and workforce shortages will affect the profession. In this complex environment it is
reasonable to ask whether there is any longer a place for dental ethics.
Eating Disorders and Dentistry
Eating disorders are a very serious and complicated illness. This talk will provide guidance for help
when you are presented with a patient who you suspect has an eating disorder. I will discuss
the types of eating disorders, signs and symptoms, common myths and what you as a dental
practitioner may be able to do to help.
‘Do as I say, not as I do’ – Motivational Interviewing starts with you!
The role of self care in the context of chronic condition management and disease prevention is
recognized as a critical element in supporting quality of life and longevity. Many ‘lifestyle’ diseases
are supported by individual choices and perceptions of health. This session will enable the oral
health professional to explore the opportunities to choose behaviours in support of improved
health outcomes. Practical examples from the literature and the textbook ‘Health Behaviour
Change in the Dental Setting’ will be provided as group discussion.
3.30pm – 4.15pm Dr Elaine Lim Orthodontics Considerations for Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists
Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists play a vital role in the dental team and as part of this
are often directly or indirectly involved in orthodontic care. This lecture will cover all aspects of
orthodontic considerations for the dental hygienist and dental therapist, including screening for dental
developmental disturbances, outline of treatment options available to patients, tips and tricks in the
orthodontic setting as well as oral hygiene considerations.
4.15pm – 5.00pm Dr Adam
Rosenberg
Location: Meeting Room 104, Level 1
What is Perioscopy?
Traditionally, the more aggressive treatment option for people suffering from the moderate
to advanced stages of periodontal disease was surgery. Now there is a new procedure called
Perioscopy, featuring miniaturized digital video technology, which enables the clinician to diagnose
and treat areas below the gum line without the discomfort and inconvenience of surgery.
Dr Rosenberg will discuss the introduction of this new technology into his practice and how it may
be a very useful tool in treating patients with periodontal disease.
