Outgoing President’s Message
eflecting on the past year I
served as President, my initial
thought is how thankful I am
for the tremendous support
that I received from the Chapter leaders and
members and also how proud I am of how we
came together as a team. The National HFMA
theme this year was “Making it Count” and
there is no doubt that we accomplished that!
There were improvements in the education hours and membership count, two of
the key indicators of a Chapter’s contribution to its mission of providing
healthcare finance education to the membership. What made this happen was the
commitment of a lot of healthcare finance professionals from our area and some
devoted Chapter leaders who not only led but mentored members to become
involved in committee activities. This was a year of testing some new ideas in
terms of the Chapter’s organization and its activities. A Vice President position
was created to provide the leadership with more support. A Technology
Committee was formed to begin to address the electronic communications and
social networking needs of the membership. The Chapter’s first joint educational
conference with another Chapter was held with nearly 400 HFMA members from
Southwestern Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana attending. The May Institute was
planned by approximately twenty Chapter leaders who took a very active role in
contributing to its success. Yes, we really made it count this year!
Even with this renewed membership interest, there’s always room for more
members to become active in the Chapter. Volunteering opportunities come in
many forms. The professional friendships you can form outside of your workplace
with peers who understand your business is invaluable. This volunteer investment
returns positive benefits ten-fold in terms of your job satisfaction and image in the
professional community. If you aren’t involved, call me or one of the Chapter
leaders and let’s talk about how you can get involved.
I am happy to turn the reins of Chapter presidency over to Michele Napier who I
expect will bring many new ideas to the Chapter and continue the growth and
success we accomplished this past year. I know you will give her 110% of your
support. Again, it was an honor for me to serve you and I thank you for the
opportunity.
Gayla Harvey, Chapter President, 2010 – 2011
Incoming President’s Message
tep Up, the HFMA Chair’s theme is an
anthem to instill passion, collaboration,
and empowerment to meet today’s
challenges. When I hear the words,
several messages come to mind. First, it evokes a
feeling of having an advantage, such as a special skill set
or knowledge, over a rival. Moreover, it conjures up
images of climbing to the next rung on the career ladder.
Last, it is a call to action, a “carpe diem” of sorts to seize
an opportunity.
Perhaps these words resonate with me because I am
beginning my year as Chapter President. If you are
interested in continuing your education, learning “best practices” in your field,
and staying in the “know”, our educational forums are a must. Our Program
Committee is comprised of subject matter experts in Revenue Cycle, Finance,
Accounting, etc. Similarly, if you like to network, dialogue with other
professionals, and have some fun, attend one of the many social events planned
by our Membership committee. We are proud to have a growing list of industry
leaders as part of our Chapter and our twelve percent increase in membership.
Come out and meet us at the Reds Outing on June 30 th. Most importantly, we are
a volunteer organization. Our success depends on member involvement. We
have a wonderful Chapter with an amazing legacy. Under Gayla Harvey’s
leadership, the Chapter in 2009-2010, earned the Henry Hottum Chapter
Improvement Award and Gold Award of Excellence - Membership Growth and
Retention and two Yerger Awards based on our collaboration with other Chapters.
I urge you to attend an educational forum/institute, join a committee, and get
certified! It’s your Chapter and your year to “step up.”
