4 Churchlands SHS is a fantastic school with a strong track record of outstanding achievements. The most important ingredients in <strong>our</strong> success are the people. The <strong>students</strong>, the supportive parent body and the outstanding staff all contribute to this success. I am very happy to be now part of the Churchlands community and hope that I can contribute to further successful outcomes for <strong>our</strong> <strong>students</strong>. As I’ve been saying to a few Year 11 and 12 <strong>students</strong>, from now on marks the “business end of the season” and everything that can be done to maximise the � nal results should be done. We don’t want anyone to have any regrets n December. Being honest with y<strong>our</strong>self, organised, having clear goals, being persistent, using all support offered and maintaining an appropriate balance are the keys to success. Following the publication of Semester 1 results we have analysed the data to monitor how <strong>our</strong> <strong>students</strong> are tracking. In Year 12, <strong>students</strong> whose performance to date has put their WACE graduation and University or TAFE entrance at risk have been allocated a mentor who will work closely to help them achieve the best outcome possible. As a parent, if you have any concerns about how WWW.CHURCHLANDS.WA.EDU.AU associate principal senior school y<strong>our</strong> son or daughter is tracking towards graduation, please make contact with either their mentor, Year 12 Coordinator Maree Sterrett, Senior School Coordinator Dave Tomlin, Careers Coordinator Clare Slodecki or myself. In Year 11, <strong>students</strong> with a signi� cant number of D or E grades have been identi� ed (thanks to Madonna Fernandes for her help with this) and I have written home to their parents clarifying the effect on WACE graduation and post school options associated with poor senior school results. At a school like Churchlands SHS it is not unreasonable to expect that every student can work in such a manner that they secure graduation from Year 12 and a place in their desired c<strong>our</strong>se at University, TAFE or employment. I throw down the challenge to <strong>our</strong> school community for 100% WACE graduation for <strong>our</strong> <strong>students</strong>! As part of this, it is critical that Year 11 <strong>students</strong> make the most of Semester 2 and choose the most appropriate c<strong>our</strong>ses for 2012. The Year 12 Semester 2 (Mocks) exam timetable and instructions should have been issued to <strong>students</strong> by the time you read this. Students involved should ensure they draw up a planner, reduce or stop paid work and re� ne exam techniques by completing past TEE/ WACE exams (or similar) under time pressure before both these school exams and the WACE exams. Facebook is addictive for many <strong>students</strong> and seriously erodes the time available for effective study. I would enc<strong>our</strong>age all parents to monitor their child’s use of Facebook and ensure that at this critical time it does not have an adverse effect on their results and future options. The exams will start on Friday 16 September (week 8) and will � nish on Tuesday 27 September (week 10). All Year 12 <strong>students</strong> need to be back at school on Wednesday 28 September. Students need to ensure they arrive suf� ciently early for each exam and follow all instructions. They only need to attend for scheduled exams unless called in by teachers to do catch up work. On Tuesday 9 August we held a special celebratory lunch for � fty two Year 12 <strong>students</strong> who have the potential to win the prestigious Certi� cate of Excellence from the Curriculum Council by the end of the year. A letter enc<strong>our</strong>aging potential Year 11 winners was also sent home recently. On Friday 26 August we are holding the launch of the “5 Star Breakfast Club” for the top � fty achievers in Year 11. This is to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of these <strong>students</strong> and to enc<strong>our</strong>age them to even greater heights! Our guest speaker will be the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Eric Ripper. It’s a busy time for everyone but with the right amount of effort I’m sure the rewards will be worth it! As you read this newsletter we will be closing in on mock exams and � nal work placements for <strong>our</strong> Year 12 <strong>students</strong>. People tell me that there are sixty minutes in every h<strong>our</strong> but I’m sure they’ve <strong>take</strong>n some seconds out of the minutes because time appears to be � ying by!! Less than 10 weeks contact time left for the Year 12s. Please enc<strong>our</strong>age y<strong>our</strong> son or daughter to seek help from the Student Services Team if they need help to manage stress levels. School Psych Mel Hut� esz, Chaplain Andrew Winton, Year Coordinator Maree Sterrett, Careers Advisor Clare Slodecki, new Senior School Associate Principal Paul Housley and I are all here to assist in whatever way we can to help <strong>students</strong> through their � nal weeks at Churchlands. Year 11s will be participating in a one h<strong>our</strong> Stress, Anxiety and Depression information awareness session organized by Mel Hut� esz and the Child Adolescent Mental Health Services team during week 7. The Parent Information Evening relating to this will be held on Tuesday 23rd of August (week 5) in the Music Auditorium at 6.30pm. Term 3 is an important time in the school for Year 10s & 11s in selecting their subjects and changes for next year. Having invested the time to make subject selections it is important <strong>students</strong> heed the advice of staff where a selection may have been border line. The complexity and workload in Years 11 &12 only increases and <strong>students</strong> need to be diligent and successful in their current program. The Senior School team is available to assist with any alterations to subject selections. Scholarships There are many scholarships up for grabs to support Year 12s going into University programs and other avenues of tertiary education. Make sure y<strong>our</strong> child sees me or Mrs Slodecki for assistance with these if required. There are links to these on <strong>our</strong> Upper School web notice board and at the various University websites. Year 12 WACE Exams Revision Programs during September/ October School Holidays Once again the school will be supporting Year 12s as they prepare for the External WACE Exams November 7th - 22nd. Students will have the information mailed to them regarding the organisation of these programs and we feel sure that these revision programs will assist in their � nal preparations. Make the most of them. End of year activities I know that Miss Haigh and Miss Sterrett have the respective Dinner Dance preparations under way and would like to remind all parents of the Presentation Ceremony for all Year 12s and their families being held at the Perth Exhibition Centre on Sunday afternoon , November 20th. I’m looking forward to my � rst Churchlands Presentation Ceremony and I trust families will make the most of this senior school coordinator opportunity by attending this prestigious event and celebrating this milestone of graduation from high school with y<strong>our</strong> student. Lock it into y<strong>our</strong> diary and further information will be coming to you soon. Good Standing I was told the senior <strong>students</strong> at Churchlands would be a pleasure to work with and that’s been the case with 100% of all senior <strong>students</strong> doing the right thing 99% of the time. They display great citizenship, honesty and c<strong>our</strong>tesy in all situations and are not affected by the Good Standing policy at all. However I must put out the message to parents of all senior <strong>students</strong> that we are coming up to some very big events on the annual calendar and I don’t want <strong>students</strong> to miss out because they did not follow school policies. Make sure the standard of attendance, uniform and following all teacher instructions are kept at its best. False Identi� cation It has come to <strong>our</strong> attention that some <strong>students</strong> are fabricating false ID for use outside of school. Parents and <strong>students</strong> are alerted to the fact that this is a criminal offence and must be disc<strong>our</strong>aged.
