Welcome to ourAutumn Antique and Fine Art SaleOur Autumn Fine Arts Auction is set to include a selection of exquisite pieces, from finefurniture, to rare ceramics, to masterful oils. Undoubted highlights will be the sale of ourE-Type Jaguar, selling at 12:00pm on Saturday 27th October, alongside the presentation ofsome wonderful collections including the Dr Allison collection.Robert Allison was an only child of fairly elderly parents who gavehim firm encouragement in his education and he learnt to give ofhis best in his occupation and also his interests. He developed aninterest in collecting, as many children did, in the 1920s and 30s.He used to collect stamps and even butterflies when it was stilllegal. After studying at Cambridge, Robert Allison was the first careeranaesthetist to be appointed to the Southern Derbyshire HospitalGroup and found himself running an anaesthetic service for one ofthe country’s largest hospital groups.‘Under his tutelage the department grew to 15 consultants,a commensurate number of junior staff and two full timesecretaries’. Obituary BMJ 1993 submitted by his longstandingcolleague CG Lloyd.Meanwhile, he began to buy exquisite antiques. Mostly he collectedfine pieces of furniture when they were affordable to him, havinginherited a little from his father and was receiving a reasonablesalary for those days (1960s and 70s). Undoubted highlights includea fine George III Chippendale mahogany galleried tea table, afine early George III mahogany bachelor chest and an impressiveGeorge III satinwood secretaire bookcase.Later he found silverware, porcelain and fine art were more withinhis means. From a fine set of four George III Robert Hennel Neo-Classical salts to 18th century blue and white Liverpool porcelain, the collection is comprehensive. Most complete however must bethe representative collection of oil paintings by artist Edmund JohnNiemann, purchased primarily from Richard Green’s Dover StreetLondon gallery in the late 1960s and early 1970s.He was very fortunate to have two very understanding andundemanding wives, Joan and Vicki, who both cherished hiscollection over many years.Adding to the sale is a fine collection of Meissen owned byMr and Mrs Rychly, better known as Toni and Mary to theirneighbours in North Derbyshire. Commenting upon this magnificentcollection Hanson’s Expert Isabel Murtough remarked:‘I was overwhelmed to discover such a fine collection ofEuropean antiques. On entering the house, each room was awash withpredominantly porcelain figures – the majority made by theMeissen factory in Germany. This factory was the first in Europeto manufacture porcelain in 1708.For more than 800 years, the secret of making a translucentmaterial had been the preserve of the Chinese potters.’Alan Wood 1942-2011 – A collection of coinsAlan Wood was an engineer based at RAF Whittering. He spentthree years in Singapore with a six month stint in Thailand, workingon Harrier Jump Jets, and Hercules Transport Planes. After leavingthe RAF he spent life in Heanor, Derbyshire and began his extensivecollection of coins.Hansons are pleased to offer Wood’s coin collection in our AutumnAntique and Fine Art Sale. This collection of Roman, sovereign andmemorial coins is set to reach in excess of £7,000. Painstakinglycollected, these are a credit to Wood’s meticulous eye. He is fondlyremembered by his family and friends.

369Lot 369. A Stuart Surridge cricket ball signed by Sir Garry Sobers, probably used in the ‘six sixes’ cricket match of August 1868.Footnote: On Saturday 31st August 1968, at ST Helens in Swansea, Garry Sobers created history when he hit six sixes off one over for thefirst time in first class cricket. The cricket ball above is a ball which was given by Sir Garry Sobers to our client Richard Lewis. At the age of17 Richard Lewis retrieved the cricket ball being used from the last ball of the over which went out the ground and was found by RichardLewis. The ball took pride of place that evening in Richard Lewis’ household. At a family conference later it was decided that the ball must bereturned. It belonged to the occasion and particularly to Sobers. Within the archive to be sold with this ball is the famous photograph of RichardLewis tossing the real ball back to Sobers. This occurred the next cricketing day before play commenced. Mr Lewis was then given this replicapresentation ball signed that day by Sobers. This Stuart Surridge ball had been used possibly in the match and is the nearest equivalent to theactual ball which hit the six sixes. Sobers signature of course adds h to the significance of this item. Sold with the ball will be the photographtaken during the match of Richard Lewis tossing the real ball back to Sobers together with a photograph signed. The archive will also includea recent photograph of an older Richard Lewis talking to Sobers during a special reunion commemorating the event in 2008. Mr Lewis wishesto stress that he has fond memories of that day and indeed forty years later at the anniversary event it was a privilege talking to Sobers and adelight being in his company. It would seem that the original ball which hit the size sixes was lost in time, and evidence would suggest that thisball being sold is the nearest to that iconic and legendary cricketing over.£1000-£1500370Lot 370.
