Through selected examples from the approximately 60,000 objects in the museum, the history
of design will be illustrated, from the forerunners of Modernism through to the present day.
Theme-related spaces are devoted to automobile design, computer culture and bentwood
furniture.

international international development of art after the Second World War
Expansion of art into all areas of life and coming to terms with the capitalistic consumer world,
represent two of the major pivotal points of western art development after 1945. Along with the
main protagonists Beuys and Warhol are American minimalists Donald Judd, Dan Flavin and
Carl Andre, as well as the German painters Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter and Arnulf Rainer.

This tour is especially dedicated to more recent works of art including photography, new
media, painting and video. A large body of works from the last ten years reveals current
tendencies and new techniques, divergences and conflicts in the post-industrial age will also
be brought to light. As the contemporary art holdings of the Bayerische
Staatsgemäldesammlungen are rotated in short intervals, other artists can regularly be
discovered.

Women played a special role in the development of modern art during the 20th century. Works
from women designers Ray Eames, Alma Buscher or Eileen Gray epitomize the early
emancipation from the former male privilege of creating art and provide interesting

The Neue Sammlung is primarily devoted to industrially-produced commodities. Nevertheless,
there are also many objects that were made in the craft tradition, whether because the
appropriate production method was not yet developed or since the creative-artisanal process
always seeks out new areas of experience and possibilities. This fertile contrast between craft
and industry is visible especially in works from the Wiener Werkstätten.
