CONTEMPORARY GLASS EDUCATION: Hong Kong
The Academy of Visual Arts at Hong
Kong Baptist University was established
in 2005. Its first glass casting course was
taught under the big tree in the Autumn of
2006. This was the first glass art education
at university level in Hong Kong. Come
Spring of 2007, the hotshop was ready and
joined the teaching programme. It was
the beginning, the seeding of Hong Kong
tertiary level glass art education.
Although glass is an ancient material, it
began to be popularly used as a medium
in contemporary art in the 1960s when the
American studio glass movement, inspired
by various sources was recognized as a
new dimension in the arts. Since then glass
has become a popular visual art material
around the world. In the Chinese region
(China, Hong Kong, Taiwan) the studio
glass movement began in 1987, starting in
Taiwan and shortly becoming a favourite
new material for the arts in Chinese
culture. Tsinghua University in Beijing
and Shanghai University have established
glass studios. In Mainland China, glass is
described as the “shiny-eye material”, and
in Hong Kong this new, shiny and beautiful
material is beginning to sparkle.
HKBU Academy of Visual Arts isn’t divided
into departments, rather the many different
courses, including painting, calligraphy,
photography, printmaking, graphic design;
spatial art, sculpture, ceramics, glass,
jewellery; new media art, digital graphics,
animation; installation, interactive art,
performance art, etc. are available to all
students. They choose the course according
to their own interests and can study as
many disciplines as desired or focus on 2 to
3 areas during the 3 years study. This does
present teaching challenges since most of
glass making is highly-skilled requiring a
major study to bring greater achievements.
To deliver the creative concept, material
property and essential skill in a onesemester/52
hour course requires a delicate
balance.
However, I am continually surprised at the
excellence of creative thinking and diverse
ideas from the first elective and exchange
students. We are proud to present this
first glass exhibition in the gallery of Lam
Woo International Conference Centre. The
participant students are selected from those
taking glass courses in the last semester.
Including our glass studio TA and myself,
there are about 30 exhibitors celebrating
this unique achievement, a milestone for
HK glass art.
Being both Chinese and a glass educator
in Hong Kong I am doubly ambitious that
this course develops to its utmost potential.
Chinese glass artists are making an
entrance on the world stage. Hong Kong
could become an internationally important
contemporary glass centre. We already
have the key ingredients, a tertiary course,
private studios and commercial galleries.
I remember a conversation with Japanese
glass artist Kimake Higuchi, many years
ago. She said that only 5% of graduating
students will pursue glass art as a career.
I hope that at least 5% of these exhibiting
students will continue doing art in glass. As
for the 95%, they will certainly know how
to appreciate glass works.
I really hope this glass art tree can continue
to grow and bear fruit for the Hong Kong
creative industry.
All the BEST.
1. When the class started, the electricity was not
connected yet in the studio, so we moved the tables
and chairs outside. It was such romantic and poetic to
have the class under the big flame tree.
Words from the president of "Metamorphosis"
Among Hong Kong arts education,
glass art is very new. The Academy of
Visual Arts(AVA) promotes glass art
appreciation and glass making since its
establishment, and is the first tertiary
institute offering glass art education in
Hong Kong. It provides a range of glass
blowing and casting courses to students.
In return, students, who choose glass art
as their elective, receive a comprehensive
fundamental training in glass.
It is a great honor to become part of this
historic movement in Hong Kong glass art.
However, developing a glass art career is
actually a heavy burden to young artist. It
is because the Hong Kong glass art is young
and new; related industries and studios
in glass art are still rare and they operate
in a very beginning status. Besides, doing
glass art requires large capital investment
and financial support. Therefore, young
graduates always face many obstacles when
pursuing their glass art career, and have to
settle their struggles between the reality
and their passion for art.
“Metamorphosis” is the first large-scale
glass exhibition held outside AVA. In this
exhibition, over 30 art pieces from glass
teacher, technician and students (both
Visual Arts Major and Non-major students)
will be displayed. We use “Metamorphosis”
as a metaphor to represent the material
change and personal transformation during
the process of glass making. Furthermore,
the symbol, the transformation of a
butterfly, illustrates our hope towards the
Hong Kong glass art development.
Being the president of this exhibition, I
would like to grasp this chance to thank
all the supporting departments who have
supported or sponsored this event. Without
their generous support, this exhibition
won’t be possible. Lastly, I would also
like to express my deepest gratitude to
all committee members, especially those
who have graduated. Their efforts have
contributed an unforgettable experience to
this exhibition!
All the best!
