Norwich Forever! campaign update: Doyle HallWith student enrollment growing, the introduction of threewomen’s varsity sports, andmore and more fans coming out to cheer onthe Cadets’ winter teams, the University’sindoor athletic facilities are nearing thebursting point. The solution to this problem will begin in thespring of 2009, when Norwich breaks groundon a new facility that will connect AndrewsHall and Kreitzberg Arena. Norwich willname this new building in honor of lead donorAllen M. Doyle ’71, two-time U.S. Senior Openchampion, alumnus, and Norwich Trustee. Fillingin the void that currently exists between Andrews andKreitzberg, Doyle Hall will extend out and around the frontof Andrews Hall. The University currently has two principal athleticbuildings: Andrews Hall, opened in 1980, which housesthe main gymnasium for the campus, as well as racquetballcourts, equipment and training rooms, and offices forAthletic Department staff; and Kreitzberg Arena, openedin 1998, which features the ice rink and weight room for thehockey teams, and offices for coaches and administrators. Both facilities are in sound condition, however, neitherbuilding has a concession area large enough to adequatelyserve fans, and Andrews Hall’s heating and ventilatingsystem needs serious upgrading. At 30,000 square feet, Doyle Hall is not the biggestconstruction project in recent years — the Wise CampusCenter is more than twice as large — however, it presentssome unique challenges. Much of the construction site issqueezed between the north wall of Kreitzberg Arenaand the south wall of Andrews Hall, a distance of only24 feet. Construction crews will need to deliver allsteel, concrete, and other materials into this narrowarea by crane. When complete, the $8 million facility will tietogether Kreitzberg Arena and Andrews Hall, allowing seamless movement between the twofacilities, as opposed to the canvas-toppedboardwalk now linking the buildings. With 21 new office spaces, all members of theAthletic Department will be housed underone roof for the first time in several decades, and every head coach will have his or her ownoffice. Currently, multiple coaches and assistantcoaches are crammed into the offices in Andrewsand Plumley. The facility will add three new team locker rooms andincrease the overall locker room space by at least 40 percent, allowing for every student who would like a locker tohave one.For fans who come to campus to watch basketball, hockey, volleyball, or wrestling, Doyle Hall will be most noteworthy forits two-story grand lobby, which will feature a large concessionarea that can accommodate simultaneous sporting events. In addition, an inviting reception area on the second floorwill house the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame, andNorwich will upgrade the heating and ventilating systems inAndrews Hall.“Athletics is an important component of the Norwichexperience. Our students, coaches and fans all deserve topnotchfacilities,” said President Richard W. Schneider. “Doyle Hallrepresents an important step toward providing the Norwichcommunity with a true, modern athletic complex.”8
