Program OverviewProgram MissionThe mission of the Norwich University Master of Arts inMilitary History program is to provide students with a baseof historical knowledge within the field of military history;build an awareness of differing historical interpretations;build the ability to synthesize diverse types of historicalknowledge; build and refine student research, writing,analysis, and presentation skills; provide students with anintroduction to historical pedagogy; provide students witha foundation for developing a professional identity as anhistorian; and help students “learn to think like an historian”as well as develop “historiographical sensibilities” and“historical habits of mind.”Program OutcomesOur Tradition. Our Expertise• Provide students with the critical thinking, research,writing, and analytical skills necessary for work in thefield of teaching at the secondary or post-secondarylevel, work in public history venues, careers asprofessional writers, and to prepare students for Ph.D.level work in history.Since 1819, Norwich has played an important role in military history;as the birthplace of ROTC, as an institution whose graduates havefought in every war since its founding, and as the leader amongmilitary schools in racial integration and the integration of womeninto its corps of cadets. CurriculumOverviewThe military history program is made up of six, six-credit courses for a total of 36credits. Each course is approximately 11 weeks in length. The program is designed so youcan complete the course work in as few as 18 months. The program ends with a one-weekresidency and graduation ceremony at Norwich University in June. The program offersfour start dates per year: March, June, September and December.Your curriculum will include topic-specific courses focused onhistorical methods and historiography. In your courses you aregenerally required to complete two short papers, typically 10pages long, and one long paper. In an effort to introduce you toa variety of different types of history, instructors may have youwrite book reviews, historiographic essays, book/article analysispapers, or annotated bibliographies.In each course, you will participate in 10 weeks ofasynchronous discussions in small groups. You are requiredto write discussion postings in response to questions posed bythe instructor about each week’s readings. You will also postresponses to the comments of your group members, facilitatingan interactive and rewarding exchange of ideas.Students may choose to complete their master’s thesis (bypetition only) or a capstone paper.
