They also know about the 150 years of Western colonialism thatdominated the Middle East <strong>and</strong> the Cold War, <strong>and</strong> about American policies ofglobalization that supported the wealth of the Gulf <strong>and</strong> the Arabian Peninsula.They know those policies have not been about justice for Palestinians, Iraqis orSouthern Lebanese. And so the information in the minds of the Arab-Americans is dramatically different than that of most other Americans.The dynamics of ethnic relations are important to an underst<strong>and</strong>ing ofthe communities. As has been mentioned, the early immigrants came fromLebanon. They settled into patterns to which later communities more or lessadjusted. Lebanon, like Afghanistan, is a mountainous area, <strong>and</strong> geographyhas a strong influence on culture. The Lebanese state has always been weak,while religious, kinship <strong>and</strong> regional groups have had significant autonomy.Sometimes they coexist, sometimes they are in conflict. But these religio-ethnicgroups have had general territorial bases <strong>and</strong> although many of their membershave migrated to cities such as Beirut, they have a general territorial base inthe cities as well. The groups are highly endogamous, meaning there is greatpressure to marry within the group. That affects the social dynamics of thegroup because those who try to marry out, especially women, may suffernegative consequences. The highly endogamous <strong>and</strong> somewhat stratifiedreligious ethnic groups of Lebanon created some of the settlement patterns <strong>and</strong>the interaction patterns for groups here.The stratification pattern they brought with them is reflected in Detroit.The Shia were looked down on by the Catholics, <strong>and</strong> they don’t live together
