6American Arab community might be very different if the early arrivals here hadbeen Egyptians.These various Detroit groups seldom interact on a day to day basis.Several organizations, particularly among the more educated classes, havememberships that cross these lines <strong>and</strong> interact on special occasions. Theseinclude the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the Arab AmericanUniversity Graduates, professional groups among doctors or lawyers, <strong>and</strong>regional clubs such as the Syrian Club. ACCESS 1 , a community organization,also has professionals from different religious groups. An exception to thecommunity based interaction model is the Palestinians. Muslim <strong>and</strong> ChristianPalestinians live in different areas but interact more often in their commonnational struggle against Israel. The interaction is not always social, asmarriage is still endogamous, but it is political.The pattern of immigration is equally important. For example, Lebaneseimmigrants formed large communities, which gave relatives a place to come. In1982, during the war in which Israel attacked Beirut <strong>and</strong> invaded southLebanon, large numbers of immigrants arrived in the established Dearbornarea communities of kin. Communities such as Bint Jubail <strong>and</strong> Tibnine havethous<strong>and</strong>s of members living in close proximity. The Yemeni, on the otherh<strong>and</strong>, came in a pattern termed “recurrent” migration, meaning they come for afew years, go back to Yemen, then come again. Many are single men, <strong>and</strong> thesingle men <strong>and</strong> the family-based Middle Eastern communities really don’t getalong. Lebanese tend to look down on the Yemeni.
