27/02/<strong>2010</strong><strong>WAAPA</strong> IN THE PARK – FANTASTIC FREE ENTERTAINMENT FOR ALLThe City <strong>of</strong> Stirl<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Perform<strong>in</strong>g Arts <strong>in</strong>vite you to br<strong>in</strong>g you picnic rug andhamper, relax under <strong>the</strong> stars and enjoy an even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> excit<strong>in</strong>g musical talent at <strong>the</strong> annual <strong>WAAPA</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Park</strong> freeconcert, to be held on Saturday 27 March at 7.30pm <strong>in</strong> Mt Lawley’s Ron Stone <strong>Park</strong>.<strong>WAAPA</strong> is delighted to be able to once aga<strong>in</strong> showcase its talented students and staff to <strong>the</strong> wider community andappreciates <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Stirl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g this happen.The City <strong>of</strong> Stirl<strong>in</strong>g Mayor, David Boothman, said he welcomes <strong>WAAPA</strong> to Ron Stone <strong>Park</strong> for <strong>the</strong>ir annual outdoorperformance. “Every year, this event just gets better and better. It’s an even<strong>in</strong>g that’s guaranteed to be enjoyable forall who attend.”Last year’s event was a huge success, attract<strong>in</strong>g over 3,500 enthusiastic audience members. This year’s concert willfeature <strong>the</strong> <strong>WAAPA</strong> Big Band and Classical Vocal students perform<strong>in</strong>g with all <strong>the</strong> pizzazz and showmanship you’vecome to expect from those study<strong>in</strong>g at one <strong>of</strong> Australia’s f<strong>in</strong>est perform<strong>in</strong>g arts academies.<strong>WAAPA</strong> Production and Arts Management students will also undertake <strong>the</strong> stage management, light<strong>in</strong>g, sound andfront-<strong>of</strong>-house management – mak<strong>in</strong>g this an all-round <strong>WAAPA</strong> affair!Kurt Weill once said ‘I have never acknowledged <strong>the</strong> difference between ‘serious’ music and ‘light’ music. There isonly good music and bad music.’And <strong>the</strong>re is ‘good’ music aplenty at <strong>WAAPA</strong> In The <strong>Park</strong> as classical voice students take a sentimental journeythrough <strong>the</strong> songs and times <strong>of</strong> Gilbert and Sullivan, those two venerable writers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cabaret that ruled whenQueen Victoria ruled <strong>the</strong> empire. Accompany<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se musical treats will be crowd pleasers from European Operetta;‘Die Fledermaus’, ‘The Merry Widow’, and ‘Tales <strong>of</strong> H<strong>of</strong>fmann’, <strong>the</strong> masterpieces from Operetta supremos JohannStrauss Jnr (‘The Waltz K<strong>in</strong>g’), Franz Lehar and <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ale <strong>of</strong> Leonard Bernste<strong>in</strong>’s ‘Candide’, <strong>the</strong> optimistic ‘Make yourGarden grow’. It’s message that we all have it <strong>in</strong> us to change <strong>the</strong> world, as long as we start at home provides a fitt<strong>in</strong>gend to this comic, joyous and sometimes sentimental first half.<strong>WAAPA</strong> is also renowned for its world-class jazz program and <strong>the</strong> 18-piece <strong>WAAPA</strong> Big Band is a wonderful example<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> high standard <strong>of</strong> Jazz we have over here <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> West. The <strong>WAAPA</strong> Big Band aims to provide a specialisedlearn<strong>in</strong>g environment for selected music students, encourag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to perform big band music at a pr<strong>of</strong>essionallevel. See for yourself as <strong>the</strong>y make <strong>the</strong>ir way through some stunn<strong>in</strong>g orig<strong>in</strong>als and breath-tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terpretations <strong>of</strong>classics from <strong>the</strong> big-band era by Duke Ell<strong>in</strong>gton, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Cab Calloway.
