27/02/2010WAAPA IN THE PARK – FANTASTIC FREE ENTERTAINMENT FOR ALLThe City of Stirling and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts invite you to bring you picnic rug andhamper, relax under the stars and enjoy an evening of exciting musical talent at the annual WAAPA in the Park freeconcert, to be held on Saturday 27 March at 7.30pm in Mt Lawley’s Ron Stone Park.WAAPA is delighted to be able to once again showcase its talented students and staff to the wider community andappreciates the support of the City of Stirling in making this happen.The City of Stirling Mayor, David Boothman, said he welcomes WAAPA to Ron Stone Park for their annual outdoorperformance. “Every year, this event just gets better and better. It’s an evening that’s guaranteed to be enjoyable forall who attend.”Last year’s event was a huge success, attracting over 3,500 enthusiastic audience members. This year’s concert willfeature the WAAPA Big Band and Classical Vocal students performing with all the pizzazz and showmanship you’vecome to expect from those studying at one of Australia’s finest performing arts academies.WAAPA Production and Arts Management students will also undertake the stage management, lighting, sound andfront-of-house management – making this an all-round WAAPA affair!Kurt Weill once said ‘I have never acknowledged the difference between ‘serious’ music and ‘light’ music. There isonly good music and bad music.’And there is ‘good’ music aplenty at WAAPA In The Park as classical voice students take a sentimental journeythrough the songs and times of Gilbert and Sullivan, those two venerable writers of the cabaret that ruled whenQueen Victoria ruled the empire. Accompanying these musical treats will be crowd pleasers from European Operetta;‘Die Fledermaus’, ‘The Merry Widow’, and ‘Tales of Hoffmann’, the masterpieces from Operetta supremos JohannStrauss Jnr (‘The Waltz King’), Franz Lehar and the finale of Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Candide’, the optimistic ‘Make yourGarden grow’. It’s message that we all have it in us to change the world, as long as we start at home provides a fittingend to this comic, joyous and sometimes sentimental first half.WAAPA is also renowned for its world-class jazz program and the 18-piece WAAPA Big Band is a wonderful exampleof the high standard of Jazz we have over here in the West. The WAAPA Big Band aims to provide a specialisedlearning environment for selected music students, encouraging them to perform big band music at a professionallevel. See for yourself as they make their way through some stunning originals and breath-taking interpretations ofclassics from the big-band era by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Cab Calloway.
