Page 6 — June 12, 2012 — HOLLAND-SPRINGFIELD JOURNALCongratulations Class of 2012Congratulations Springfield High School Seniors!Valedictorian, salutatorian recall memories, lessons learnedJulia BoehlerValedictorian“Congratulations, Classof 2012, we finally made it!After four years we havefinally taken our last highschool test. We won’t haveto be at school every morningby 7:30 ever again! However, we could nothave made this journey withouthelp from others. Iwould like to give a bigthank you to all of the families, friends, teachers, coaches, advisors and staff that arehere today. You have allhelped us be able to see this. Now that we have finishedhigh school, we willall be going our separateways. Many of us will beheading off to college. Othereswill be joining theworkforce or the armedforces. No matter what weare doing next year, it is anexciting time in each of ourlives. Next year will be thefirst step in the beginning ofour adult lives, whether weare staying at home or travelingfar away. This is the time when wecan truly discover ourselvesand what on earth we reallywant to do with the rest ofour lives. As E.E. Cummingsonce said: “It takes courageto grow up and become whoyou really are.”This is the time to trynew things we didn’t havethe time or courage to try inhigh school. To travel, eatnew foods, help out yourcommunity, explore yourfaith and do other things youhave never done before. Ifyou are going to college andaren’t athletic, you can stilljoin an intermural sportsteam. Harry Potter fans, check out the Quidditchteam. (Yes, most collegesreally do have a Quidditchteam. I want to check it outjust so I can see a bunch ofcollege kids running aroundon broomsticks). You willnever know if you’ll findsomething you love or meetyour best friend doing something,if you don’t try it.By being involved outsideof school or work, youdon’t only have a great timeyou also grow as a person.Participating in a music programor athletic team mayhelp you gain communicationor leadership skills.Serving the communitythrough volunteer servicehelps you gain self-confidenceand a sense of selfworth. In high school, Imade being involved a priorityand I believe it has greatlycontributed to my success.I hope everyone stays or getsinvolved in these upcommgyears. Some of us know whatwe want to do, and some ofus are undecided and hopinginspiration will fallout of thesky (preferably soon). However, many people switchmajors or career paths. Youmight think you want to be adoctor, but then decideteaching is for you. I mightdecide against science altogetherand major in history(probably unlikely though, sorry Mr. O’Shea). Don’tworry if you don’t have anexact plan for your future, the next few years are aboutdiscovering yourself so it’sok if you aren’t quite sure“We might have a bad professor or an awful boss.People will try to hold us back but it’s like WinstonChurchill said: ‘Success is not final, failure is notfatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.’ ”Julia BoehlerSHS Valedictorianright now.As exciting as these nextfew years will be, they won’tbe easy. No more snow days, prime times or teachersreminding us to study or door homework. Many us ofwill not be living at home,Best Wishes graduates!Valedictorian Julia Boehler, left, and salutatorian RaelynnGrup at the graduation ceremony.so we will have to do ourown laundry and keep ourrooms clean (unless we wantan angry roommate). We might have a bad professoror an awful boss. Peoplewill try to hold us backbut it’s like WinstonChurchill said: ‘Success isnot final, failure is not fatal:it is the courage to continuethat counts.’Life will be hard, but weare ready. Our experiencesthroughout high school inthe classroom, on the field,on stage or at a job havehelped shape us into peopleready to take on the world. We will struggle, but we willalso have fun working tolive out our dreams. No matter what, we willalways have one thing tolook back to–our years atSpringfield High School. Wehave 267 other people with ashared experience. We all survived exams,OGTs, D lunch, early morningsand excessive amountsof homework. (Seriously, teachers, I like my sleep!)We’ve struggled to balanceschool, extracurricular activities, sports, jobs and havingtime to just have fun. We’vebeen stressed together andhad great times together(like the toilet races at AfterProm or Friday night footballgames). Wherever weend up, whether near Toledoor across the U.S., we willalways carry a part ofSpringfield in our hearts.Personally, I will reallymiss Springfield. I’m excitedto be done and move on, butI’ll miss the friends I madeand the good memories.I cannot express enoughhow proud I am to havegone to Springfield. It’s agreat school system and I’mpart of a great class. Class of2012, we finally did it. I’mso excited to see what wewill do in the future. I’msure the class of 2012 willshow the world just howawesome we really are!”Raelynn GrupSalutatorian“Good morning! I’d liketo thank you all for beinghere today. Teachers, principals, counselors, administrativestaff, and parents–youmean more to us than mostof us care, or dare, to admit, and let me be the person tosay, ‘Thank you, for everything. You all make a difference.’Well, seniors, this is it.Graduation. We’ve beenwaiting four long years forthis day to come, and it’sfinally here. Since I knowmost of us really want to justwalk across the stage, showoff our shoes, and receiveour diplomas, I’ll try to keepthis brief. For some people, reachingthis point was easy; forothers, it was difficult. Butwe succeeded. We passedour OGTs, we took ourACTs, we made it throughthe craziness that is highschool.“So whether your lifeturns out to be a sci-fitrilogy, a romance, apage-turning mystery, the great Americannovel or a comic book,it is my prayer for allof you to write yourown great story, yourway, and to make eachchapter better than thelast.”Raelynn GrupSHS SalutatorianAudience, as you look atthis Springfield High SchoolClass of 2012, you see futuredoctors, nurses, engineers, teachers, accountants, presidentsof the United States(cough, Knox Sanders). Thisis exciting. In a few shortmonths, we’ll be heading offto college and learning morethan we ever thought ourbrains could contain. I don’tknow about you, but I’mready to start a new chapterof my life. So what could bemore appropriate than forme to take a page from myfavorite author?C.S. Lewis, author of the“Chronicles of Narnia,” wasa master at writing happyendings that left you wantingmore. This passage from thefinal page of the final chapterof the final book of theseries is ironically about anew chapter in the lives ofthe Pevensie children:‘But the things that beganto happen after that were sogreat and beautiful that Icannot write them. And forus this is the end of all thestories, and we can mosttruly say that they all livedhappily ever after. But forthem it was only the beginningof the real story. Alltheir life in this world and alltheir adventures in Narniahad only been the cover andthe title page: now at lastthey were beginning ChapterOne of the Great Storywhich no one on earth hasread: which goes on forever:in which every chapter isbetter than the one before.’Members of the Class of2012, imagine somethingwith me. We are the Pevensiechildren who enter thewardrobe to explore thisentirely new world.Springfield High Schoolis our Narnia. And it’s veryreal. There is real drama(Tyler), real sport (Jordan),real friends (Marissa), andreal enemies (nine-pageessay assignments, Dr.Wright).We’ve had magicalhomecoming dances andepic spirit game-battles. Butin this fantasy life that ishigh school, we have learnedsome real life lessons–aboutperseverance and loyalty,self-sacrifice and hard work. Now, however, we canforget about rivalries, dresscodes, and the latest gossip.Today, we get a taste of whatour futures might hold–afuture made possible, in part,by those who taught andguided us for four years. When we step foot outsidethe wardrobe of SpringfieldHigh School, we takethe first step on a real journeyto our future. Highschool is only the cover andtitle page of our lives: ChapterOne of our reallives–who we choose tobe–is only beginning! No matter who you werein high school, you can completelyremake yourself. This is your opportunity toshine, to show who you reallyare, without any peerpressure getting in the way.So whether your lifeturns out to be a sci-fi trilogy,a romance, a page-turningmystery, the great Americannovel or a comic book,it is my prayer for all of youto write your own greatstory, your way, and to makeeach chapter better than thelast.”Summer Fitness SpecialsZumba, Yoga, TurboKick, Aerobics & More!www.toledoheartandsoul.comCONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!May your futures be full of good health, happiness, success and prosperity.Dennis Linn, Branch Manager11043 Villacourt Lane, Whitehouse, OH 43571419.377.0594The time has come to spread your wings and fly.Always remember your roots are the Sylvania areacommunity that nutured youand the success you achieve can always be attributed totremendous support from the education andbusiness community.CongratulationsNorthview and Southview Class of 2012Congratulations tothe Class of 2012We wish you allthe best!!SHS AthleticBoostersSHS Class of 2012115th annual Commencement • Saturday, June 2 • Stranahan TheaterClass Color Green • Class Flower Tiger Lily • Class Song Live Like We’re Dying • Class Motto “You only live once”Class OfficersPresident Natalie Setterberg • Vice President Suzette Grindle • Treasurer Ernest Persley • Secretary Aaron SiedlerCongratulations to the Class of 2012Congratulations!Class of 2012 graduatesJoin us at the Rollie Run June 16!www.rollierun.comCongrats to the2012 Rollie RunRecipients!June 18-22, 9 a.m. to noonCongratulations fromWelch Publishing Co.(419)874-4491
