This is why moreand more diesel engines are being equipped with aclosed diesel particulate filter. These particulate filters need to be regenerated inorder to remove the trapped particulates. One wayis to actively regenerate the filter at regular intervalsin order to reliably burn off the stored particulates. To do this, temperatures of around 600°C in theparticulate filter are required. These temperaturescould be achieved via internal engine measures alone. This can, however, lead to a dilution of the engine oiland reduced oil-change intervals.Via the targeted injection of diesel fuel into theexhaust gas, Departronic helps to massively reducethe need for internal engine measures or even avoidthe need for such measures. This procedure increasesthe efficiency of active regeneration and thus savesfuel. Currently it is used mainly in commercial vehicles.Based on the first Departronic generation which hasbeen successfully in series production since 2006,we began series production of the second generationwith several well-known customers in February 2010.Possible applicationsDepartronic is primarily designed for use in theheavy-duty sector. Further possible applications existin the medium-duty, off-highway, and marine segment.

The dieselfuel supply is controlled by means of a shut-off valve. This valve is opened during regeneration of theparticulate filter, so that the dosing valve in theMetering Unit can meter the required amount ofdiesel fuel for the Injection Unit.Depending on several signals (e.g. engine load, pres -sure in the metering unit) the software integratedin the control unit calculates the required dosingquantity and converts this into a triggering signalfor the dosing valve. The particulate filter is not actively regenerated ona continuous basis but only as required. This callsfor special measures during non-metering phasesin order to protect the injection valve from beingblocked by soot deposits. For this reason theDepartronic has an injection valve with a valveneedle that opens outwards. This reliable anddurable design has already been proven in thesystem’s first generation.15OutlookFuture Departronic developments will focus onthe specific requirements of smaller engines andwill be able to meter correspondingly small amounts.3Bosch scope of supply12345Metering Unit with shut-off valve, dosing valve andpressure sensors for diagnosis and quantity controlInjection Unit with water cooling to preventfuel ageingFlexible feed lineSteel pipeExhaust gasBosch: Benefit from our competencesComprehensive range of services and know-howSystem and network competenceInnovator and technology leaderWarrantor for quality and dependabilityWorldwide presenceUniversal partnerRobert Bosch GmbHDiesel SystemsPostfach 30 02 2070442 StuttgartGermanyFax: +49 711 811-45090diesel@bosch.comwww.bosch-diesel.dePrinted in Germany2 920 00P 0L8-C/CCA-201009-En© Robert Bosch GmbH 2010.
