Tambuntingsays the next period will be a test of dedication andcommitment.<strong>Planters</strong>bank chairman and chiefexecutive officer Ambassador Jesus P.Tambunting, invited as guest of honorand speaker during a recent meetingof the Rotary Club of Manila, offeredinsights into ability of the Philippineeconomy to ride out the turmoil in worldfinancial markets.The challenges of the crisis inworld financial markets will be atest of dedication and commitmentof organizations, according toAmbassador Tambunting, whoemphasized that banks can help thecountry better overcome the comingchallenges by supporting Small andMedium Enterprises, a sector of greatimportance to the nation’s future.Ambassador Tambunting outlineda number of initiatives that wouldenable SMEs to manage better, endureeconomic shocks and become globallycompetitive including technology-basedbusiness solutions and SME-orientedinfrastructure projects.“We are convinced that we canbest do our share by re-affirming ourcommitment to SMEs, a vital economicsector, and strengthening even more ourcapacity to assist them, especially duringthese difficult times,” he said.SMEs in the Philippines account for90 percent of its registered companies.SMEs also contribute over a quarter ofthe country’s gross domestic product andemploy more than half the labor force.4SME.COMmunity.PHilippinesPromising outlook for Mindanao SMEsMindanao remains the mostpromising market for SMEloans anywhere in the country,according to <strong>Planters</strong>bankexecutive Remigio TitoTirones, senior vice presidentfor SME banking.In his address to theMindanao InvestmentConference at the MarcoPolo Hotel in Davao City, Mr.Tirones disclosed that thevolume of <strong>Planters</strong>bank loansto Mindanao SMEs grew 10times over the past six years.At press time, <strong>Planters</strong>bank hadalready released P4.4 billion to a widerange of projects including high valuecrop production anchored on integratorslike DOLE and Del Monte, the commercialfisheries sector, agro-industrialcompanies, academic institutions,hospitals, transport companies, tradeand business services.<strong>Planters</strong>bank supports production of high value crops by Mindanao SMEs.Mr. Tirones announced thedesignation of Davao City as<strong>Planters</strong>bank’s regional center for SMElending and disclosed plans to opena branch in Tagum in early 2009.“Our expansion plans in Mindanaoare aligned with our vision to anchor<strong>Planters</strong>bank in the communitieswhich have displayed great promisefor entrepreneurial growth,”Mr. Tirones told the 400executives, entrepreneursand policy makers attendingthe conference.“Mindanao’s significantleap in SME loans is anindication of a strengthenedeconomic outlook forthe region, in spite of astereotyped image shaped bythe Manila-centered media.”Mr. Tirones emphasizedthat the promotion of privateentrepreneurship is the mosteffective driver of economic growth:a source of new jobs, better incomesand improvement in the quality of life.Balanced and equitable developmentdriven by a strong SME sector canensure the end to the vicious cycle ofpoverty and inter-ethnic strife that stillplagues the region.
