At the time you wereliving in Seattle and later moved backto <strong>Utah</strong>. Before we get to your blog,give me some background on you.EN: Alright. Let’s see, I was a BYUbaby, born in Provo, <strong>Utah</strong>, actually.My parents were going to BYU atthe time. I grew up my whole lifeliving in different places in Colorado,mostly in Grand Junction. One of myhuge regrets is that at the time I didn’tknow that there was such a thing asmountain biking. And maybe therereally wasn’t. I didn’t do anythingathletic as a kid. I did speech teamin high school. I bounced aroundin careers and so forth. I lived inWashington most recently, where Iworked for Microsoft and mostly wasa roadie there just because out thefront door there were terrific countryroads. They were very unpopulatedand just beautiful to ride. Now thatI’m back in <strong>Utah</strong>, I am about 50/50road and mountain because there is somuch good of both. I live in Alpineand out my front door I can do theAlpine Loop which is incredible or Ican ride Hog Hollow which is incredible.Or if I want to drive a little bit,I can get on to the ridge trail networkwhich is just unbelievable. Even mycommute is a great road ride. In myheart of hearts, I’m not a roadie ormountain biker. I like to ride whateveris good. SEPTEMBER <strong>2008</strong> cycling utah.com 3mountain bike racingBig Names Compete at Brian Head in American Classic MTB Stage RaceStory and Photos by LukasBrinkerhoff160 racers were drawn to theAmerican Mountain Classic StageRace by 4 days of competition anda $20,000 purse. The stage race atBrian Head Resort drew some of thebiggest names in endurance mountainbiking.The race took place at BrianHead Resort which sits at 9762 feetjust under Brian Head Peak. Everystage except the first started andfinished in the lodge’s parking lot.Racers had the beautiful surroundingsas well as great temperatures toaccompany them during the four-daycompetition. Every day had deepblue skies and high temperaturesaround 80 degrees, perfect weatherfor mountain biking.The parking lot was relativelyempty before the first race. Therewas a calm ambiance. Riders werestretching by their cars, applyingsunscreen and chatting.Only a few began to warm upand they seemed relaxed. I was surprisedat the calmness lurking in theparking lot. I expected to see racersfranticly getting ready but was confrontedwith organized, professionalracers.The racing started at 3 p.m.August 21 with a 9 mile prologuethrough the town of Brian Head.The course was relatively flat andconsisted mostly of double track.The racers were not required to ridethe prologue, but positioning for thefirst stage the following day wasjosie_johnson_ad_<strong>2008</strong>_print.pdf 8/21/08 12:33:02 PMdetermined by this short loop. Evenwith little to gain, the riders did nothold backJeremiah Bishop of the Trek/VWteam took the race pulling over thefinish line at 20 minutes. Bishop hadJeremy Horgon-Kobelski right onhis rear wheel.I witnessed the speed from a fewmiles into the course. The racerscame mashing down the short sectionof singletrack before I expected.The groups were tight and no onewas giving room for passing. TheElite men came flying by, but thetightest group was the Elite women.Lea Davison won the category, comingin at 23:42.Back at the start line after thefinish, I was once again confrontedwith the eerie calm that was everpresent throughout this event. I hadjust witnessed high-speed racingmoments earlier, but found the sameracers once again relaxed and calmat the finish line.I found the level of professionalismat this race was not to be outdone. Of the 160 racers who competed,there were 30 pro men and15 pro women. All the big names ofEndurance Mountain biking werepresent.Tom Speigel of Team Big Bearwas the man in charge. He saidthis was the events first year andthey were happy with the turn out.Despite the event being in its infancy,Speigel knew most of the racersby name and was shouting encouragementto everyone as they passed.Stage 1. The next day the racersThe Elite Men's lead group enjoying some great ridgetop singletrack during Stage 2 behind Brian Head Peak.were handed to the mercies of a 56mile loop with 5700 feet of climbing.According to Speigel, 40 ofthose 56 miles were on singletrack.Day 2 was the only stage thatdid not start and finish at the resort.The racers were shown some of themost beautiful singletrack on CedarMountain. They rode the VirginRiver Rim trail linking it in with theNavajo Lake loop.The Elite Men’s category, drivenby stiff competition and a $500stage winner’s bonus, surprised theevent staff. The estimated times forthe course were tortoise slow forthis group. Jeremiah Bishop crossedthe finish line to win the stage afteronly 3:42:34. Benjamin Sonntag of3D Racing came in just after Bishopwith Horgan-Kobelski trailing rightbehind.Of the 160 racers, there wereonly seven that did not finish.Speigel was on sweep duty for thisstage and he commented about oneof these riders, Jorge Santascoy.According to Speigel, Jorge hadflown in from Mexico City to competein the race. The prologue hadgiven him trouble and found himwalking parts of the simple openingcourse. All in all, Speigel said heliked to see people like Jorge outriding. Maybe he hadn’t come themost prepared of all the riders, butthe fact that he was riding a fourday stage race at 10,000 feet hadto mean something. Jorge was outriding while most people would belounging around the house watchingTV.Stage 2 began bright and earlySaturday. Racers headed out at 8a.m. sharp, this time starting fromthe parking lot in front of the resort.Day 3’s stage was called the Peak.The course went from the resort andclimbed up to the foot of Brian HeadPeak. It then followed the LowderPonds trail, some dirt roads, theSidney Valley trail and then climbedaround the peak where the racerswere challenged by the descentdown the ski slopes of the resort.The stage began as beautifulas the last two days had and theweather held. The Elite Men’sgroup showed no signs of slowingdown with two days of intenseracing under their belt. The leaderswere at the foot of the Peak by 8:17(unofficial time) and came smokingthrough to the Lowder Ponds trail.Both the Elite Men’s and Women’sgroups were tight, but again theleading women were right on eachothers’ wheels.After the lightning fast timesof the day before, the event staffand racing support were ready forthe riders. I was able to witness therace at Feed Zones 1 and 3. TheBonneville<strong>Cycling</strong> ClubCheck Us Out!WWW.BCCUTAH.ORGlast stragglers were coming throughwhen the leaders were coming back.Ryan Trebon of Kona camethrough first with the chasing groupa couple of minutes back. He wasbeing pursued by a close group offour guys. Trebon came through theFeed Zone looking good, with hislanky physique dwarfing his huge29r frame.Tinker Juarez came throughwithin ten minutes of Trebon he waslooking good riding alone and at thelead of his group.The racers did not let up on thisstage. Bishop once again took thestage finishing the 48-mile coursein 3:23:44 crossing the finish linejust in front of Horgan-Kobelski.The two were neck and neck comingdown into the finishing section, butthere was a hard left and Bishop wasable to pull ahead.Trebon, who had looked like hewas feeling strong and had a goodchance of winning didn’t showup for some time. When he camearound that hard left, he stopped andchatted with a spectator for threeminutes before proceeding to thefinish line. He even let a few riderscome through while he was talking.This was just one more example ofthe relaxed atmosphere of the event.Juarez won the Elite Masterscategory 25 minutes ahead of hisclosest competitor.Racers continued to tricklethrough the finish line for the nextthree hours. Jorge crossed the linethree hours behind the leaders, buthe finished and he was out theirdoing it. And of course, we all knowthat is what it’s all about.Sunday’s stage 3 was the shortestof the stages. The racers wererequired to ride two 24 mile loopsOn the trail towards Lowder Ponds in stage 2 right behind Brian HeadPeak.with 3400 feet of climbing per lap.The course started out followingthe previous day’s ride, going up toLowder Ponds but then came acrossSydney Valley and dropped off DarkHollow.If you’ve never ridden in BrianHead or have but missed out on thistrail, you need to understand whatthe racers faced. Dark Hollow drops,literally down from Brian HeadPeak into Parowan canyon. The firstcouple miles are steep, technical singletrackthat is boulder after boulder.Not only did they have to maneuverthis tricky section after three days ofracing, but they had to do it twice.After Dark Hollow the coursejumped onto the Scout Camp Loopand then climbed back up to BrianHead Resort where it began all overagain for the 2nd lap.Horgan-Kobelski finally beatout Bishop to take the final stageand he did it by a mere half of asecond. Overall, Bishop won the 1stAmerican Mountain Classic StageRace.Almost all of the 160 racers werefrom out of state. Alex Grant of SaltLake City placed 6th overall. By eating a lot ofdonuts. At least, that is how Regan Fackrell did it at the Inaugural Tourde Donut held in American Fork, <strong>Utah</strong> on July 12th. Sponsored by theAmerican Fork Rotary Club, the event was a fund raiser for the AmberAlert ID project.The race was comprised of 3 laps around a 7-mile circuit. At the end oflaps 1 and 2, racers pulled over to a donut table and ate as many donutsas desired. When finished, each racer had 3 minutes deducted from his orher time for each donut eaten. Anyone puking was disqualified.Fackrell ate 25 donuts for a whopping time bonus of 75 minutes.Subtracting this from his finishing time of 1:11:13, giving him a winningtime of -3:47. For eating the most donuts, he was also crowned the KingDonut. Crowned Queen Donut for eating a total of 12 donuts was PennyBehunin. What can you do to takeyour training to the next level?A good way to start is by takinga look at your performance over thepast triathlon season. Assess yourstrengths and weaknesses and determinewhich of the three disciplines(swim, bike, or run) where youcould use some improvement.The fall and winter is a greattime to take a hard look at the pasttriathlon season and to put a trainingplan into effect for the upcomingseason. This is also a time whereyou can work on improving yourswimming, pedaling and runningtechnique.It is often difficult for the averageperson to make these adjustmentsthemselves or to put intoaction an efficient training plan forthe season. It’s my job to makesure that our website is easy forour customers to use. They do IPresearch for Fortune 500 companies.It doesn’t have anything at all to dowith cycling.CU: What is your educational background?EN: Philosophy. I never took a journalismclass. I’ve never been a journalist.I’ve never written. I’ve neverreported anything.CU: When did you develop yourinterest in cycling?EN: That would probably bebetween 13 and 15 years ago. Isort of measure how long I’ve beencycling by the number of Leadville100s I’ve raced. I’ve done 12 nowso its been more than 12 years thatI’ve been riding. A few good friendsof mine had taken up mountain biking.We all worked at WordPerfectat the time which was in Orem, fairlynorth and fairly east, and there wasa terrific mountain biking trail thatyou could do right during lunch hour.They started doing that and convincedme to buy a mountain bike and jointhem. Fifteen years later, those arethe guys that I ride with.CU: How big of a group do youhave?EN: It fluctuates and none of usworks at Word Perfect any more. Acouple of us have moved to differentplaces and we don’t ride togethereveryday any more. But the group isabout a half dozen, what we call theCore Team, and the level of what welike to ride and where we like to rideis pretty similar. We’re well matched.We make sure we get out to Moab atleast a couple of times each year toregroup.CU: Tell me about your family.EN: Well, as of earlier this week, I’vebeen married for twenty years to mywife, Susan.CU: Congratulations.EN: Thanks. It doesn’t seem liketwenty years. That’s a pretty goodchunk of time, but it doesn’t feel allthat long. We have four kids, reallygreat kids, two boys ages fourteen 14and 12, and twin girls, identical twingirls, and they are 6. All four of mykids are great kids in their own way.The 14-year old is a very talentedprogrammer and mathematician. Heis already writing fun games thatappear on my website from time totime and the 12-year old is a greatall-around student and deep thinker . .. does a lot of reading. And the twinsare just crazy little girls. Always upfor an adventure. They are the reallyoutdoorsy ones. My wife, Susan, sheis a talented craft person, I would say.She makes beautiful jewelry and alsois hard at work on her first novel. Shecurrently is fighting metastatic breastcancer which has invaded most ofher body. She just started chemo forthe third time and has had operationsand so forth. She’s being tough, butit’s definitely the defining battle ofour lives.CU: My daughter mentioned to me,because she has followed your blogfor a couple of years, that she knewyour wife had had cancer and that ithad gone in remission and come back.She told me she read that and cried.EN: That has been one of the thingsabout the blog . . . real supportivepeople like your daughter who don’treally know us but have commenteda lot and have said some incrediblynice things in the comment sectionand in emails. About a year ago, oneof the people who reads my blogs frequentlyand lives locally set up a postoffice box. My wife didn’t know thatit existed. Readers sent in cards anda few people sent in gifts like stockingcaps and things like that for whenher hair came out. We were reallyoverwhelmed by not just dozens buthundreds of cards from all over theworld. People have shown us thereis a real strength in the cycling community.Everyone who rides a bike Ithink pulls for each other. The blogstopped being something that peopleread and then go on their way a longtime ago. People are now a lot morelike a rather large, extended family.Which is a pretty nice place to be. Ifeel like I stopped being the guy whowrites the blog. It happens to be mewho does this, but I’m definitely nolonger the star of the show. I’m theguy who kind of sets the topic of discussioneach day and then I get to sitback and watch it flow.CU: I’ve noticed that too. I think thecycling community is a tight-knitcommunity in the sense that youshare a bond because you cycle.EN: Sure. We’ve got a pretty importantaspect of our lives that we allshare in common. And there is adefensive aspect to it, too. We allshare common dangers and we allworry about a lot of the same things.And I think, at least for a big chunkof the cycling world, it’s not likemost sports where you are going topeak and drop off pretty sharply. Ifyou love football, for example, aftera pretty early age in your life you’rerelegated to being a spectator. You seethe same thing with most of the bigcontact sports. For things like cycling,and I think running and other similartypes of sports, you can do them wellinto and through your adulthood. Forexample, at the Leadville 100 lastweek they had progressing ages ofpeople standup who were doing it,and there were two men who were70+ doing this 100-mile mountainbike race at 10,000 feet. And I’mcertain both of them completed it.You can do this well into your seventies.I’m barely started in my cyclingcareer. At least I hope. It’s somethingthat does not necessarily end whenyou turn 40, when you turn 50 or turn60 or 70. We all still have somethingin common regardless of what ourages are.CU: Let’s get to your blog. When didyou start it and what motivated itsbeginning?EN: Sure. I started it in April 2005,I believe. At that time I was aMicrosoft employee. I started it onthe advice of a friend who said tome, “Hey, Elden, everyone’s doingblogs, you should start a blog”. I justdidn’t know what it would be about.But then I was with some friends ridingaround the White Rim on a littlevacation, and I was just so horriblyout of shape and just feeling overweightand slow and terrible. And as Iwas pushing up Shafer Trail, which isa very steep, rocky section at the endof the ride, I was thinking how yearsago I had been able to ride that trailand thinking I need to do somethingabout that. That’s when it occurredto me, I would blog about being a fatcyclist and trying to get myself back.I was around 190 pounds, which formy frame, I’m about 5'6" or 5'7",is probably about forty pounds toomuch if you really want to ride andclimb well. And climbing is what Ilove to do. And that’s how it started.At the beginning, I was mostly doingpostings, “Here is my weight today,here is how much I am trying to loseby the end of the week”, and so forth.It doesn’t make for very interestingreading. One thing that I guess I amis vain, and I wanted and do stillwant people to read what I write.So, I started writing funny stories,recollections, fake news, anything tomake my blog more compelling andentertaining than a simple recountingof what my weight is. From there,after a year or two, and shortly afterI moved from Washington back to<strong>Utah</strong>, I got my own domain and setup the blog and now it is www.fatcyclist.com.It makes it so that I canhave ads and support my biking habita little more. And it’ll help pay for thecancer stuff.CU: When you first started that, whodid you expect to read it and howwould you get the word out?EN: When I first started writing it, Iknew exactly who was reading it. Itwas the Core Team, the half dozenfriends I have had for years and years.They were the ones I was writing itfor. To tell you the truth, even now,when I write it, in my mind I ampicturing those six guys. I’m still justwriting it for those six guys and theother eight or ten thousand peoplewho also read it. Basically, they’reself-selecting. They must be in someway like my half dozen friends thatI write for because they are all stillenjoying it. But I still think of thishalf dozen friends and my sistersand parents. I’m writing for them.How did I get the word out? That Inever even tried to do. That happenedorganically without me doing anything.I still don’t try to get the wordout. The way the word did get out,though, happened by accident. It wasduring one of the Tours de Francewhen Lance was racing. I noticedthat a sentence did not go by thatPhil Liggett or Paul Sherwen did notmention Lance Armstrong. So I wrotea fake press release saying that PhilLiggett had been fired because he hadmissed his contractual obligation tomention Lance Armstrong twice perminute. People picked up on that andthey started emailing it to friends. Ithit people in the funny bone and theyliked it. People started emailing thataround to each other and overnight Inoticed my readership went from tenor fifteen hits a day to sixty, seventy,a hundred, three hundred. It kindof grew from there. Because of thatpost, someone must have emailedone of the editors at cyclingnews.com and they emailed me, actually Ithink they left a comment in my blog,saying, “Would you be interested inwriting for us from time to time?”I said absolutely. Can it just be thissilly fake news stuff ?” And they said,“That’s what we expect.” So I wrotesilly fake news for cyclingnews.com for a while. After a while, theykind of lost interest in me. There wasnever a formal agreement. I think Ijust ran out of ideas for them. ThenI started winning some popularitycontest-type things, the Bloggies andthings like that, and you just pick upreaders like that. I haven’t tried towin readers, but once you have thesnowball rolling, it just tends to rolltill something stops it.CU: I was not even aware of contestsfor bloggers. But just like everything,I suppose they have them.EN: Sure. There are awards given forblogs in different categories. Thereis a sports blog category and mineactually won that in the <strong>2008</strong> edition,beating out a number of professionallystaffed blogs. It doesn’t go so muchto show that I have a really greatblog as that I have really awesomelydedicated readers that voted for me.Because it is won by the number ofvotes. A blog like Deadspin probablyhas a factor of 20 more readers thanI have. The readers that I have caremore about my blog and they voted.Thanks to them I have a Bloggie.CU: Interesting.EN: But to tell the truth, it’s mostlyI think cyclists emailing othercyclists or cyclists posting commentsin forums and things like that.Fatcyclist.com is a silly soundingname and so when you hear it in agroup ride or something, you’re likelyenough to remember it and go checkit out afterwards.CU: Plus, I think there is a goodnumber of us that can identify withthe concept of a fat cyclist. Battling aweight problem.EN: Any of us who are at 40 orabove and have had our metabolismslow down a little bit, we all know wewould be a faster cyclist if we coulddrop 15 pounds. I think it speaks to apretty universal feeling.CU: How many followers do youthink you have now?EN: My blog will get on averageon a weekday between 14,000 and20,000 page views per day. It dropsoff to just a couple thousand over theweekend. I think, like myself, most ofmy readers get out and away from thecomputer during the weekend. I don’twrite during the weekend. Visitors areusually about half that. Most visitorswill look at a couple of pages per day.Between 7,000 and 10,000 visitorsper day and between 14,000 to 20,000page views per day, depending uponthe day of the week and whether whatI wrote is interesting. There is definitelya direct correlation to how wellI wrote something to how many pageviews I get.CU: You mentioned earlier thatyou’ve heard from people around theworld. Is there anyway to tell wherethese hits are coming from?EN: Yeah. The U.S. by far is first,and then Australia. And that makespretty good sense when you considermy first real big break came fromcyclingnews.com which at the timewas based in Australia. And thenthe UK and the English speakingEuropean countries. That’s reallywhere most of my readership comesfrom, although when I sell jerseys,I have a partnership with Twin Six,a jersey design and manufacturingcompany, we sold jerseys to countriesthat I had not even heard ofbefore. I remember sending a jerseyto Malta. There is someone in Maltariding with a Fat Cyclist jersey. It’skind of cool to think about. There areseveral Fat Cyclist jerseys in Japan,lots in Australia, quite a few in theUK, a number of them in France andGermany, and most of the states. Theinteresting thing is there are reallyvery few of them here in <strong>Utah</strong>. Theblog I write is definitely not <strong>Utah</strong> specific.It is more about cyclists. I think<strong>Utah</strong>ns will naturally relate to it morebecause when I talk about a trail or aroad there is a greater likelihood thatthey too have ridden it. I talk aboutMoab a lot. I talk about riding theAlpine Loop a lot or the terrific trailswe have in Draper a lot. So <strong>Utah</strong>nsare going to have a better idea whatI am talking about. But it is reallymore about the cycling experience asopposed to <strong>Utah</strong> specific cycling.CU: You mentioned your jerseys. Didyou start selling those as a way toraise funds to help with your wife’scancer costs?EN: No, that came later. The firstedition of the Fat Cyclist jersey wasjust for fun. The blog had reached athreshold where I thought perhapsI could make a little money with it,and considering all the work I did,I didn’t feel any compunction aboutthat. I thought if people would likea Fat Cyclist jersey, and a lot ofpeople had indicated they would,I’m going to go ahead and do that.It was shortly after that first jerseycame out, it was an orange and blackjersey, that my wife’s cancer cameback. I was stunned into not reallydoing anything for a while and TwinSix actually contacted me and said,like a lot of my readers, “We want todo something to help. What can wedo?” I didn’t have any idea. “Whatif we made a special pink edition ofthe Fat Cyclist jersey?” That soundedgood to me. They actually kept noprofits at all for themselves from thatand we instead split the profit, halffor the Lance Armstrong Foundationand half for going towards the medicalbills as well as the ancillary thingsthat come around because of cancer.Things like a stairlift for our house orthe pile of co-pays that you get whenyou have to do MRIs every otherweek. Since then, the jerseys havealways been about doing somethingto support Susan as well to make alittle extra money to help offset someof the costs of the cancer battle. Thesupport part, I think actually, is themost important part. Everyone who iswearing a Fat Cyclist jersey I believeis thinking about doing something tomake a statement like “cancer sucks”and “Win Susan”. “Win Susan” is acatchphrase that caught fire with myreaders. Every time I see a strangerwearing one of those jerseys, I get alump in my throat. It is really verytouching.CU: That’s cool. How is your wifedoing now?EN: Things are pretty hard for herright now. She is just this week startinga new round of chemo and it’stactical in nature. There is no expectationthat it will be able to rid thecancer from her body. We are justtrying to manage the tumor, to keepit from growing further and hopefullyshrink it. She is having a lot of radiation.The cancer is taking hold in herbones more than anywhere else andit has been very hard for her. It hastaken root in her spinal column andso forth and it is hard for her to walk.She had to have a hip replacementlast November (2007) because one ofthe tumors had grown so much thatit essentially smashed the ball partof the hip. She’s being really toughabout it but it’s not an easy battle andit’s not a battle that ever ends. Thatwears you down. It really wears youdown.CU: I’m sure it does. That’s hard todeal with. My wife’s mother diedfrom cancer.EN: Anyone I talk with either hashad cancer or knows somebody thathas had cancer. If there is a morecommon overarching tragedy, I don’tknow what it is. It touches everyone.Everyone is either going to get itor someone in their family is goingto get it. If there is a more worthybattle, I don’t know what it is. Thatis one of the things I really like aboutLance Armstrong. He has taken his

The Lance ArmstrongFoundation has been really helpful toour family and to other families I’vemet who have been touched by cancer.It’s a foundation with real teeththat doesn’t feel like one of thoseglossy celebrity foundations that ismostly done to make a celebrity feelgood about himself. This is a fightthat Armstrong took very, very seriously.CU: You have had pretty closecontact with the Lance ArmstrongFoundation. Have you had any contactwith Lance himself?EN: No, I haven’t. Although he didsend a photograph with him holdinga picture saying “Win Susan”which was very nice of him to do.It was a really real surprise. I havehad lots of interactions with othersin the Lance Armstrong Foundation.I donated a quarter of my ad spaceto the Lance Armstrong Foundationto help them get the word out abouttheir events and I have lots of conversationswith them just about waysthat I can help them with their cause.They are fantastic people on a reallyimportant mission. Just last month,the blog and the readers in my blograised $37,500.00 by raffling off abrand new Ibis road bicycle, an IbisSilk SL, a super, super dream bike.It’s worth well more than $4,000.00,probably over $5,000.00. We were able toraise a good chunk of change for theLance Armstrong Foundation.CU: You mentioned that the LanceArmstrong Foundation is one thatreally does help. In what ways didthey give assistance to you and yourwife?EN: For us it has been mostly in theform of information. When Susan’scancer first came back, there werea lot of things I wanted to know. Itwas all possibly findable if I wantedto spend hours and hours but I wasreally shocked and not functioningvery well. I filled out a form on theirsite saying that I was interested inthis and this and this, and in findingout about clinical trials and if thereis help available for prescriptions. Ithought I would get a brochure or apacket in the mail a couple of weekslater. But the next business day, lessthan twelve hours later, I got a phonecall from someone who spent maybethree hours on the phone with me. Itwasn’t just someone who was boredand walking through the job. Whileshe had never met me, she passionatelycared about making sure thatwe had everything that we needed.It really is a patient-advocacy group.Finding out what you need and findingout how you can get it. You canfocus on fighting your cancer insteadof focusing on finding informationor doing paper work and stuff likethat. You can work on taking careof yourself or taking care of yourloved one. With that said, I am notat all a spokesperson for the LanceArmstrong Foundation. It’s just thatwe have had really good success withthem.CU: Let me shift gears. I noticed acouple of times that you have hadcontests on your blog. In fact, I thinkit has been fairly frequent. Tell meabout those.EN: Yeah, uh, I do a contest whenI can’t think of anything to write. Iget a fair amount of free stuff fromcompanies now. I don’t really needmost of the things that come my way,the t-shirts and things like that, andI do like to give it away. Usuallythey’re fairly silly contests, althoughonce in a while we do somethingpretty major. Last year, we did a contestcalled the B7 which I think wassomething like the Banjo BrothersBig Bulkie Biker Body Challenge.There may have been some otherwords with Bs in there, I don’tremember all of them. Banjo Brotherswas the company that sponsored that.They make bike bags, messengerbags and things like that. Anyway,it was basically an eight month longweight loss contest where everybodywas trying to see if they could lose agreater percentage of weight plus doa faster percentage-wise time trial atthe end of the eight months than theydid at the beginning. We had a complexalgorithm to find out who coulddo it. Anyone who did better thanI did, I would give them one of myjerseys, but everyone had to bet mesomething, too. So, I had people whobet me handlebars. I had people whobet me their own club jerseys. I hadpeople bet me fresh wild salmon. Itwas all kinds of crazy stuff. If it wasinteresting or something I wanted, Isaid let’s do it. Everyone was bettingagainst me and I think in the end Ibeat all but ten or twenty people. Ihad a lot of skin in that game. Thosetwenty people I [lost to], I had to givethem my jerseys which, while I getthem at a discount, I don’t get themfor free. It definitely cost me. I thinkthere were more than one hundred ofus who did this. That was a lot of fun.A lot of comradery.CU: My daughter also mentionedthat she read that you were having anevent, or a ride, a month or two ago.EN: The Fatty’s Triathalon. I put the“a” in there because it’s not a real triathlon.You always hear people callingtriathlons a “triathalon”. I wentahead and put the extra “a” in therefor fun. The events were a mountainbike ride followed by going downthe sliding rock in Alpine, a naturallyoccurring water slide. The third eventwas bratwurst eating. Obviously, itwas just an excuse to have a party. Ithought a whole bunch of us oughtto get together and have a lot of fun.That’s what it was. I am lucky enoughto have a big backyard and plenty ofroom, and bratwurst is cheap.CU: In looking at your blog the lastcouple of days, I have been interestedto follow the Elden/Louis saga.Briefly summarize what that was and,now that it is past, your thoughts onthat.EN: Originally what I wrote wasabout how angry I was that at thebeginning of the Leadville 100, someonesurged from behind me in a veryspecifically neutral start area, hookedmy handle bars and crashed me to theground. It was a reckless move and anillegal move and I was just furious atwhat had been done. After I posted it,my readers ganged up on the guy aswell. Like I said, a very dedicated andprotective group of readers. It actuallyleft me feeling bad. His punishmentwas probably beyond the scope ofthe crime. The next day, I just postedand said “Hey, I was speaking in theheat of the moment and I apologizeand I shouldn’t have done this publicly.”I sometimes forget that I’m notjust writing this blog as my personaljournal anymore, that when I writesomething thousands of people readit. Like I said, when I write stuff,I’m still writing to this group of sixpeople. And that was maybe somethingI should have just sent to thatgroup of six people instead of puttingit up there for the public. And thatessentially is what I said in the secondpost. And then this morning, theguy who crashed me, he commentedin my blog and I thought, “Well, youknow, I better give him equal time”and so I went ahead and put that upand told him that if would send mehis address, I would send him a FatCyclist jersey, basically the equivalentof an olive branch. Hopefully that isdone and the lesson I have learnedis to keep the angry emails and theflames off the blog.CU: It looks to me like your blogmust take a fair amount of time. Doyou ever tire of it?EN: That’s actually one of my biggestfears, not that I will get tired of itbut that I will run out of things to say.I think, somehow, I will always havean idea for the next three or so posts.I always know what my next threeor so things are going to be. Andsometimes, what is number three willbecome number four because somethingelse will intervene. I have threeideas for my next three posts, andthen I crash and separate my shoulder.Well, obviously that is going tobe the thing I write about tomorrowmorning, right? I worry about the daywhen I write a post and say, “Well, Idon’t know what I’m going to writeabout tomorrow.” And I guess thatwhen that happens, I will have apretty good idea that maybe it’s timefor me to shut it down or take a twoweek vacation or do something likethat. As is, I always have something Iwant to write about it. There’s alwaysfun to be had.CU: What do you like most aboutdoing the blog and, looking back overthe past three and a half years, whatare the highlights and the lowlights?EN: I love comments in my blog.After I post something, I love thehour afterward. An hour after I post,there will usually be ten or fifteencomments. As the day goes on, Ilove reading what my readers have tosay. Every single time there will besomething. Someone will have a jokeor an observation that surprises andjust cracks me up. And I love that. Ialso like that there are thousands ofpeople who don’t comment at all butstill enjoy it enough to come back.And occasionally I will get an emailfrom someone who says, “Hey, Idon’t comment on your blog becauseI don’t do that kind of thing but Ido enjoy what you write.” I like thata lot. I love that there are so manypeople supporting my wife. That hasbeen incredibly important to me andmy wife in the last couple of years aswe try to navigate this whole cancerordeal. There are hundreds of peoplewho have let us know that, accordingto their own philosophies, religionsor however they think, they are doingtheir part for us. That matters a lotto me.CU: What is your favorite post?EN: My favorite post . . . I thinkthe Phil Liggett post was one of myfavorites. That one, the ideas sprangfully formed. I didn’t have to doanything. The idea came to me and Iknew exactly how it ought to be written.That was a pleasure just becauseI was able to hammer it out so fast. Iwrote it and it was done and a lot ofpeople immediately caught it. Anotherfavorite was actually based on anangry comment a reader had postedonce. I had done “open letters” aspart of my blogging. They’re alwaystongue and cheek. But I had donean open letter to Assos talking abouthow silly their ads are. Someone senta reply that was just scathingly angryand just outraged. I took that commentand made it my post the nextday with my own comments insertedand asking follow up questions to thisperson. He never replied but that’sokay. I think that would probably beacknowledged to be my most popularpost ever. A lot of people enjoyed myreview of Dave Zabriski’s new chamoislubricant product, DZNuts, whichI did just a couple days ago,. I did atongue and cheek review and a lota people liked that. I think probablymy favorite non-fake, non-satire post,was about Tibble Fork Reservoir. Itwas called “The Best Place In TheWorld” and it was me just talkingabout the mountain bike trail startingat Tibble Fork Reservoir, the TibbleFork trail, and why I consider it tobe the best mountain bike trail in theworld. I talked about experiences I’vehad on it, what the trail is like andso forth. It’s not every day that yousay exactly what you mean and reallypinpoint what you love about cycling.But that time I got it. That was agood post, a really good post. Of myreal “about biking” instead of talkingabout biking culture.Lowlights. That’s harder to dobecause the honest lowlight onesare ones I have forgotten. I wrotesomething and I wasn’t really feelingit that day and I posted it and neverthought about it again. There areprobably dozens of those. Ones whereI wrote something and later thought,“Oh, I shouldn’t have written that.”.Probably this one I just did this week,the Elden/Louis thing. If I had that todo over again, I probably would’vemade it a paragraph in another postabout the whole Leadville 100 experienceinstead of shining the spotlighton it. In terms of advertising, it wasa huge success. My page views weremuch, much higher that day thanmost days. I know that if I wantedto make more money I should writemore inflammatory articles. Then Icould definitely increase my pageviews. But that’s not what I want. Forone of the first times ever there werepeople saying, “I thought you were anice guy and you’re not.” And whileI don’t think that there is anybodywho’s not angry from time to time,in this post you might see me as thisfoaming at the mouth, ranting kindof guy.CU: Where do you see this goingfrom here? Do you have any definiteplans for the future?EN: I’ve talked with a couple of literaryagents who are interested in abook and I’m working on a proposalfor a Fat Cyclist book. But, a proposalto an agent is a long way froma book in the hand. I would like towrite a book. I don’t know if it willbe a book that reads like my blog,as if it were a 300 blog essays, or ifit would be something completelydifferent. It would have somethingto do about bicycles, that’s for certain.Beyond that, if I had the time, Iwould love to write for cycling sitesand cycling magazines. But, I don’treally have the time to make this goany further than it’s going right now.I’ve got my wife to take care of, I’vegot my kids to take care of and I havea full time job and I want to ride mybike. So, the ninety minutes or so thatI’m spending each day with the blog,that’s about as much time as I havefor projects like that.CU: One final question. <strong>Cycling</strong> forme fills important roles in a numberof ways. Fitness. Keeping my weightdown. Sometimes I come home andI’ll be hassled and my wife tells meto go for a bike ride. It just makes mefeel better. So for you, what role doescycling fill in your life?EN: <strong>Cycling</strong> is like a big reset buttonfor me. It will take the pressuresof the day, whether job or family, orconcerns about medical stuff, and letme put them into prospective. It’smore than that, though. It’s a socialthing, it’s how I stay current with mygood friends. It’s a thinking thing.I have had lots of job-related goodideas on the bike, maybe more goodjob-related ideas on the bike than Ihave anywhere else. It give a chanceto be clear. And more than anythingelse, it’s just fun. It’s such a rare thingfor me to come back at the end of abike ride and think “That wasn’t verymuch fun.” There is always a highlightout there. Whether it’s seeingsome deer on the side of the road orseeing a fox or badger out on the trail.You see stuff, you do stuff and you’rewith people you like. Cyclocross was started asa means of winter training for theroad cyclist. The cyclocross seasonin the United States typically runsfrom <strong>September</strong> through December.World Championships are typicallythe first week of February.Preparation for cyclocross requiresdifferent training strategies thantraining for road and mountainriding. Attention to these demanddifferences are often times the differencebetween staying healthy andhaving reasonable results.Reasons to believe cyclocross isgood•Races last an hour or under.•Not all cyclocross races are absolutemud-baths or snow fests.•Cyclocross challenges your balanceand coordination better than roadcycling.Challenges are made particularlyto the foot, knee, hip, and torso asa result of interacting with variedsurfaces via feet to ground and feetto pedals.•Cyclocross is a great weight bearingactivity.Weight bearing activities promotebone density. Road cyclingitself does not promote bone densityimprovements/maintenance.•No 5-6 hour road rides required.Cyclocross is a shorter, moreintense race than the typical stagerace or long road race.Reasons to believe that cyclocrossis good but challenging for theroad cyclist•Cyclocross has risk of injuries.Sprains, strains, lacerations/abrasions and contusions are themost common cyclocross injuries.Frequently sprained/strained areasinclude the ankle and the Achillestendon.•Cyclocross requires good bike handlingin all situations.Environmental challenges mayinclude thick mud, loose rock/gravel, sand pits, roots, wet grassand snow to name a few. Cyclocrosstires are typically 32-35mm wide.Not your average stable mountainbike tire.•Cyclocross eats bicycle equipment.Cyclocross exists in a prettyharsh climate for metal and movingparts: mud. The demands of roadcycling on the legs are different thanthat of cyclocross riders. Trunk musculature isimportant for the cyclocross athlete.Back muscles of the road cyclist arenot used to hauling objects uphillon their feet. Plan to hear somecomplaining of back pain around thecool down area of most cyclocrossraces. Jumping rope is a reliablemeans of making quick improvementsof calf strength as it relates tocyclocross.Run! Most chronic swimmersand bicyclists look funny when theytry to run. Their muscles and jointsare not well prepared for their feet tohit the ground with such force. Easeinto running. Running for the purposesof cyclocross training shouldstart as late as July. Endurance runningshould occur approximatelytwice a week with an endurancesession (road/track) and an off-road/trail run.Coordinate your bike! Participatein at least one specific cyclocrosspractice session per week. Specificsof a practice session should include;mounts/dismounts, barricades,shouldering, and run-ups.Practice dirt! Focus should bemade on the practice of stayingupright on all surfaces and the abilityto maintain momentum throughvaried media (rocks, sand, mud, treeroots, etc).Endurance! Your weekly trainingshould include an endurance ride of2-4 hours depending on your skill/race level and seasonal variation (areyou a road cyclist currently in an“off-season”?).Cyclocross is a great sport as itcombines elements of coordination,weight bearing for the lower extremitiesand spine, aerobic training,and fun in the mud and snow. Thereare a lot of reasons why a bicyclistbut what is it? Cyclocross is aunique discipline of cycling that canbest be described as a cross betweenroad cycling, mountain biking, andsteeplechase. Races take place ona closed circuit and last 45 minutesto 1 hour. The terrain includespaved, grass, and off-road surfacesand a series of obstacles—includingbarriers, steep hills, or stairs—thatrequire dismounting, shoulderingor carrying the bike, then remounting.Competitors use primarilycyclocross bikes, which use slightlymodified road geometry to allow forknobby tires and better clearancewhen passing over obstacles.Like no other segment of bikeracing, ‘cross brings together adiverse group of bike racers; theroadie and mountain biking communitiescombine for a short andintense season and the primary purposeis fun. It’s the multi-facetedaspect of ‘cross that offers somethingfor everyone:•Mud and grass for the powerriders? Check!•Corning that rewards those whocan find and ride a fast line? Check!•Fast hard pack and paved sections?Check!•Bike handling skills? (Just TRYnot to fall down when there’s 6” ofsnow on the course!) Check!•Transitions and accelerations?Cross is above all an event oftransitions, primarily surroundingdismounting, remounting, and acceleratingout of corners. Check!•And… hard efforts? Miller Tour of <strong>Utah</strong>.Photo: Dave IltisBy Tyler ServossAs the banners come down andthe riders and team personnel rush tocatch planes back home, one man’sattention is brought back to the taskahead. There is little time to celebratethe successful completion ofhis first venture into high level racepromotion. It is time to face anotherround of chemotherapy.Few of us know what TerryMcGinnis has experienced. At timesbike racing has a way of turning thecompetitor into an object and leavingout the humanity. It is easy toget upset over a bad line through acorner or a crash causing mistake,but not so easy to see the strugglesoccurring behind the glasses andunder the helmet. Terry’s life providesan opportunity to take a stepback and look at our fellow ridersthrough a different lens.I have known and respectedTerry for the better part of fifteenyears. I started out with an idea toprofile the man behind this year’ssuccessful Tour of <strong>Utah</strong>, and endedup with a new appreciation for life.<strong>Cycling</strong> BeginningsTerry was a stand out Motocrossracer in <strong>Utah</strong> and through out thewest. In the early eighties he pickedup his first mountain bike to helpwith his Motocross racing fitness,and to recover from a knee blownout due to racing. After a shortwhile, riding was not enough andhis competitive side took over. Heentered several MTB races and washooked. Soon after, a number of hisMotocross friends got into road ridingand Terry joined them.Those who have been aroundfor a while will remember theweekly training races at the SaltLake International Center. Terryexperienced his first criterium at thisvenue. Terry said “My first race outthere, I rode around with them. Itseemed so easy the whole time, andI just thought well, I’ll just wait forthe sprint. These guys will wait forthe last lap and they’ll sprint. Sowe came around and they rang thebell. I sprinted. I made it around theturn and to the railroad tracks, probablya good 400 meters or so andof course ran out of gas and they allcaught me, passed me and droppedme like a rock. And I thought ok Iguess I went a little too soon. Thegreat thing about these weekly racesis that they are practice; you can goout and fix your mistakes. And sureenough within four weeks I wentout and won my first InternationalCenter.”Terry joined the second yearclub Mi Duole and enjoyed suchteammates as former professionalMarty Jemison and current pro LeviLeipheimer. Terry continued toimprove and competed well enough,both nationally and locally, to earnhis Category 1 designation. He isa fixture in the Salt Lake racingcommunity and has mentored andcoached many other cyclists.Tour of <strong>Utah</strong>In 2006 Terry served as the radiocommentator for the Larry H. MillerTour of <strong>Utah</strong>. He enjoyed this roleso much he was asked to reprise itfor the 2007 edition. The foundationwas laid for Terry’s future role withthe race during a trip to the 2007Tour of California. A good friend,coaching client, and Tour of <strong>Utah</strong>board member Bill Cutting invitedTerry to join the Tour of <strong>Utah</strong> committee’sresearch trip to California.During this trip Terry got to know anumber of the committee membersand their ideas. Terry disagreedwith the decision to cancel the 2007race, and was very vocal about hisopinions. He felt cancelling the raceall together was not the best choiceand would be a greater set back thanrunning a scaled back version of theevent. Terry said “Enough funds hadbeen raised to do a race, just not inthe style that they wanted to.”Bill took Terry’s comments andfeedback to heart and when GregMiller created an exploratory committeefor the <strong>2008</strong> race, Terry wasinvited to join. Greg Miller hasbecome the driving force behindthe Tour of <strong>Utah</strong>. Terry says “GregMiller is a staunch supporter ofthis race. He is a huge enthusiastand he more than anybody wants tomake sure this race goes on forever.He feels like it should be part ofthe landscape like the 24th of JulyParade. He feels that strongly aboutit.”At the first meeting, Terry cameloaded with notes and was readyto tell Greg Miller exactly what hethought. Greg was impressed to theextent that he offered Terry the positionof Executive Director.Despite having only promoted afew local criteriums, Terry’s cyclingknowledge, and ability to surroundhimself with a group of people experiencedwith large scale events, werea recipe for success in <strong>2008</strong>. Movinginto the future Terry would like tocontinue the incremental growth ofthe race, creating a long term, stableevent. Along these lines plans areunder way to mix up the courses andvenues to showcase more of <strong>Utah</strong>.This may include new courses inDowntown Salt Lake, Ogden, andperhaps Cache Valley for 2009.Fight Against CancerIn 2007, Terry’s season beganwith a hard block of training withlocal pro’s Burke Swindlehurst andJeff Louder. As the racing seasonbegan Terry’s performance did notmatch up with the intense traininghe had been doing. Things were badenough that Terry sought medicalhelp.For over 16 years Terry hasmanaged the symptoms of an illnesscalled Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s isa disease of the digestive system.With proper attention to diet andother factors the symptoms can bemanaged. Terry suspected a connectionto Crohn’s, so he returned to thedoctor who had treated his diseaseand began a series of tests.After numerous studies Terry wasdiagnosed with Mucinic Carcinoma,a type of cancer. Cancerous tumorswhere found in his abdomen.Because of the location of thetumors neither surgery nor radiationtherapy were options. The situationwas dire enough that chemotherapywas begun immediately. With in 5months the cancer was in remission.Unfortunately the disease wasnot gone and returned with a vengeancein April of <strong>2008</strong>. Terry said“I realized that I was not supermanand that I could not just bike racethrough this.” The chemotherapy hascontinued since May and is likely tocontinue off and on for the foreseeablefuture. Miller <strong>2008</strong> Tourof <strong>Utah</strong> was billed as “America’sToughest Stage Race.” It certainly didnot disappoint. Held from Wednesday,August 13th, through Sunday, August17th, it consisted of 5 stages covering336 miles and a whooping 30,000vertical feet of climbing. Elevationwould play a factor also since most“flat land riders” have trouble withthe oxygen level at elevations above5,500 feet, which a good portion ofthe race exceeded. The race coveredvarying terrains from flat, to hillyto outright steep — the Snowbird“Queen Stage” had two HC (out ofcategory) climbs.Eighteen teams and 126 riderswere invited. They included thepowerful Garmin-Chipotle team withpodium stage results in both the <strong>2008</strong>Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France,international teams BMC and Bissell,as well as top domestic teams inHealth Net, Jittery Joe’s, Rock Racing(with 4 Tour de France veterans),Successful Living, Symmetrics, TeamType 1 and Toyota United. The fieldalso contained local teams AmericanR.A.D.D. and the Canyon Bicycles<strong>Utah</strong> All Stars.Roughly one-quarter of the riderswere from 12 foreign countries,adding an international flavor tothe race. Impressively, the race wascomprised of 10 previous GrandTour (Giro D’Italia, Tour de France,Vuelta de España) riders, of which7 have reached the podium at leastonce. Many riders were past nationalchampions and Olympians in theirrespective countries including MoisesAldape from Mexico, who flew


SEPTEMBER <strong>2008</strong> cycling utah.com 15immediately back from Beijing tocompete.Several local riders were consideredfront runners for the generalclassification including localsJeff Louder (BMC) and BurkeSwindlehurst (Bissell) who were 3rdand 4th overall in the 2006 Tour of<strong>Utah</strong>. Also, recent transplant DarrenLill (BMC) of South Africa wason form with the terrain suiting hisstrengths. With 5 of the top 6 GCcontenders from the 2006 editionback to compete, this edition was themost competitive to date.The race would close with a technicaltime trial at the Larry H. MillerMotorsports Park providing the icingon the cake. Would the GC be clearby stage 2? Stage 4? Or Stage 5?Stage One the Sports CommissionRoad Race 8/13/08The 102-mile stage started inNephi, circled San Pete County, andthen returned back to Nephi. At firstglance, despite 4850 feet of climbingand many rollers, it looked to be theperfect sprinters stage, with the 3 hotspot sprints spread evenly throughoutthe course, and only one minor category3 KOM offered. The finish wasperfect for strong sprinters teams,being that it was quite straight wherebreakaways could not hide. The last10 miles covered a fast downhill, aright hand turn, and then 400 metersto the line. The area is also notoriousfor stiff headwinds, as well as crosswinds.This course would lend itselfwell to teams like Toyota-United andSuccessful Living, who brought acontingency of riders to support theirsprinters, and also for Rock Racing’s“Fast Freddie” Rodriguez, and RudolfNapalitano, as well as local riderswho might be able to sneak in behindone of the team trains storming forthe line.Some of the local <strong>Utah</strong> andregional teams made it interesting onthe first riser, just after passing theentrance to the Nephi loop at aboutthe 4-mile mark. The peloton wasconsistently contorting from longstrung out lines to a packed bunchwith true accordion-like flair.Finally, Jesse Gordon (CanyonBicycles <strong>Utah</strong> All Stars) made thebreak with Successful Living’s BradWhite, Garmin-Chipotle’s JasonDonald and The Fan CompositeTeam’s Sheldon Deeny (EmpireRacing, NY). Their lead grew to 7minutes over the peloton and 3 ½minutes over a chase group comprisedof local rider and OlympianBilly Demong (American R.A.D.D.),time trialist Sam Johnson (HagensBerman) and the ever-punchy RobCampbell (Bob’s). The chase grouprode hard and quite well together butto no avail, eventually getting caughtby the peloton in Spring City with 60miles left.Up the road, local Jesse Gordon(Canyon Bicycles, <strong>Utah</strong> All Stars),took the first sprint and was theleader for the green jersey competition.Unfortunately, at mile 45 thebreakaway group of 4 was directed inthe wrong direction and had to pulla U-turn while they still had a 2:40gap to the main field. The pelotonended up on the correct course, aheadof the original 4 in the front group.Race officials quickly neutralized thefield, allowed the original front groupto soft pedal past the main group,thus recreating the 2:40 gap, and thenresumed the race.The lead group was firing on allcylinders, and with Jason Donalddoing the majority of the work, theyquickly built the lead to 3:20 at mile52. Donald then took the KOM withease ensuring him the day’s polkadottedclimber’s jersey.Brad White fought off SheldonDeeny for the next sprint points atmile 72, causing Jesse Gordon tobe dropped off the back. The groupwas now on long, straight sectionsof road, but somehow held off thechasing peloton to the top of the lastclimb before the 10-mile descent.They only had a one minute lead with10 kilometers to go, so it looked sus-Continued on page 16

BradWhite mentioned that, “Jason didnot contest the intermediate sprinthot spots, but he was the drivingforce of the break all day, spendingmore time in the wind and keepingus all motivated. In the end, thestrongest rider won.” SuccessfulLiving’s Argentinean Express,Ricardo Escuela, won the field sprintjust ahead of Jonnie Clark (Toyota-United) and “the Badger” Frank Pipp(Health Net), thus causing SuccessfulLiving’s race director Steve Hegg towonder if, “I should have had Bradnot contribute to the break in thelast 10k, because we had the fastestsprinter in the field with Ricardo,”which proved to be prophetic later on.Bryson Perry of AmericanR.A.D.D was 6th in the field sprintand 9th overall to don the FirstEndurance Red Jersey in the <strong>Utah</strong>’sbest rider competition.Results1. Photo: Dave IltisStage 2 – University Health CareRoad Race 8/14/08Stage 2 started in Ogden and finishedat the U of U’s research park.The stage had 3 major climbs —North Ogden Pass, Trapper’s Loopand Big Mountain — each offeringKOM points, as well as two sprint hotspots at miles 25 (Huntsville) and 45(Morgan). It covered 85 miles and awhopping 10,600 vertical feet, finishingwith a fast 45mph descent downEmigration Canyon and then a hardright hand turn to the finishing sprintin Research Park.This was a hard stage to predictfor the cyclists and team directors.They were not sure if it would breakapart on the first brutal climb upNorth Odgen pass, and then comeback together in the flats, or bedecided at Big Mountain, the lastmajor climb of the day. Scott Nydam(BMC), KOM winner of the Tour ofCalifornia, thought a select group ofthe GC contenders would split afterthe first climb. Local favorite and2006 3rd place finisher Jeff Louder(BMC) felt like, “Big Mountainwould create the split for the GCcontenders, but ultimately it wouldcome down to Stage 4’s last climbup Little Cottonwood.” All in all thiswas a brilliant addition to the race byrace director Terry McGinnis, sinceit forced everyone to pay close attention.Garmin-Chipotle’s WillFrischkorn (stage 3 Tour de France2nd place finisher) got things goingoff the gun with a hard attack. Thissplintered the field into a long lineof chasers, which in turn createda hectic pace up the hills of NorthOgden all the way up North OgdenPass. Another local rider, GardieJackson (American R.A.D.D.) statedthat “I was toward the front up theclimb. Everyone there was breathinghard and hanging on for dear life. …I spent a lot of bullets right off thebat.” The first KOM had Garmin-Chipotle setting the pace with BlakeCaldwell and the young Peter Stetinagoing over first and second followedby Scott Nydam (BMC) for third withBrad White (Successful Living) surprisinglygetting eighth over the top,despite being in the previous day’s 94mile successful breakaway.After the first descent, the leadgroup would dwindle down to 20riders, followed by a pack of 30 ridersthat finally caught on at mile15 going into Huntsville. Garmin-Chipotle, BMC and Rock Racing hadthe most riders represented in the leadgroup with Garmin-Chipotle settingthe pace. Unfortunately, Scott Nydamof BMC “touched a teammate’swheel and went down hard around acorner,” thereby sending him to thehospital with a broken collarbone.Through Huntsville the pace wasblistering fast averaging 30 to 35miles per hour on the flat sections,with Rudolf Napolitano launchingmultiple attacks for Rock Racing.Once the second sprint arrived,Sheldon Deeny (Fan CompositeTeam) looked like he would take ituntil hard man Brad White went flyingby to take the points. White thenpaced himself up Trapper’s Looptoward the KOM, yet wasn’t caughtby the select group of 20 for wellover a mile. Brent Bookwalter (BMC)set the pace to finally catch him priorto the KOM.For the next 18 miles, the attackscontinued through the rollers, spreadingthe lead group into a strung outpace line 50 deep. At this point, awhopping 41 racers were in dangerof not making the time cut per raceradio. Eventually, a breakaway groupformed in Morgan which had representationfrom every major team.

Finally, on theclimb to Traverse Ridge, MichaelCreed was caught about halfway up.Attacks continued sparingly to thestart of the finishing climb up LittleCottonwood Canyon, with the leadpack dwindling to less than 20 riders.BMC, Garmin-Chipotle and RockRacing were well represented in thegroup which included favorites BurkeSwindlehurst, Chris Baldwin and thepolka-dotted Glen Chadwick (TeamType 1).Oscar Sevilla got things startedfirst at the base of Little Cottonwood,gaining a 15 second lead, withDanielson and Caldwell trying tobridge, and Louder and Lill chasing.BMC eventually brought it back asGrajales, Lill (after he bridged toLouder) and Stetina were shelled. Thefireworks kept on going as Chadwickcaught Sevilla then cruised rightpast at tempo, building a 20 secondlead quickly. At this point, only 4remained in the chase group, heavyhitters Swindlehurst, Louder, Baldwinand Caldwell.Caldwell bridged to Chadwickand then pulled a page from hisopponent’s playbook, riding tempoto open up a 15 second gap. Thiswas a serious threat consideringCaldwell’s climbing prowess, andhe maintained up to a 25 secondlead for several miles. Just behindon the steepest sections of the climbbefore Tanner’s Flat, Swindlehurstwas sparring with Baldwin, causingLouder to get dropped only to fightback on no less than eight times.Baldwin fell victim for a moment toone of Swindlehurst’s attacks. ThenLouder recovered and got strongeronce the gradient fell to 8% or lessat Tanner’s Flat. He caught Baldwinand Swindlehurst. After droppingthe pair on the ‘flats’, he caught andpassed Chadwick and then finallyreeled in Caldwell with 1k to go.Louder immediately set a fast tempoat the front, losing Caldwell, and thenburied himself to take the win by 13seconds.After the race, Caldwell stated,“I felt great. I just wish I would havebeen more patient and not gone sosoon.” Jeff Louder’s dad, Ken, waselated, stating emphatically, “Jeff isnot a pure climber like the others, Hejust needed to keep it close, and whenthe climb flattened out a bit, it reallytipped the advantage to him. Then hejust powered by everyone.” And theyounger Louder in yellow had this toadd, “You know, I learned somethingriding this in training with DarrenLill. He hurt me on the last sectionsof this climb and I used that strategytoday to my advantage.”In the local rider competition,Nate Page became the second CanyonBicycles <strong>Utah</strong> All Star to wear theRed Jersey after a rough day in thesaddle for all of the riders.Stage Results1. Thisway you could see the riders snakethrough the winding section out fora mile, and then again when theycame back in. Much better than justa straightaway where you see dudesflying by at 35mph for 4 seconds.Also, the teams were stationed in thelarge covered pit areas with cable TV.Sweet! And the weather was greattoo.The course was 7.5 miles long,left the complex, then proceeded toGrantsville and back, with winding,fast technical corners within the complex,and long straight sections for theGrantsville section.Going into the race, the potentialwinner looked to be Jeff Louder(BMC) who was only 7 secondsbehind race leader Blake Caldwell(Garmin-Chipotle). Also, the riderswho filled 3rd place to 6th placein the overall were separated byless than a minute: They were GlenChadwick (Team Type 1) who is theformer New Zealand TT champion at42 seconds back; Burke Swindlehurst(Bissell) at 1:07; Chris Baldwin(Toyota-United, and 2nd place 2006US Pro TT Championships) at 1:22;and Brent Bookwalter (BMC, and the2006 U-23 National TT champion) at1:35. It would be tough to make uptime on the top three riders, but if anyof the top 6 had an outstanding TT,and a front-runner faltered, it couldpotentially jumble the final G.C.Jeff Louder “felt pretty good”(with a grin) prior to the race, and ifall went well, could take the overallwin in his “hometown” race.In the end, Tom Zirbel (Bissell)won in a time of 13:50 to top thetime trial in his “biggest stage win todate.” Brent Bookwalter (BMC), whoproved to be a climbing phenomenonin stages 2 and 4, had enough left tocome in second at 13:59. Jeff Louderwas third at 13:59, and by putting 16seconds into Blake Caldwell, Louderwon his first major National RacingCalendar stage race in grand fashion.Tom Danielson (Garmin-Chipotle)at 14:11 and Ian McKissick (BMC)at 14:12 rounded out the top 5. Ofnote, McKissick crashed around acorner hard. His race director, GavinChilcott, felt like, “The crash costhim at least 25 seconds,” making his14:12 truly an outstanding ride.For the overall G.C., Chadwickmaintained 3rd behind Caldwell.Local rider and climbing sensationBurke Swindlehurst (Bissell) rodea phenomenal time trial in 14:18 toJeff Louder (BMC) trumped Blake Caldwell in the final timetrial at Miller Motorsports Park by 16 seconds to take theoverall win by 9 seconds.Photo: Dave Iltismaintain his 4th place G.C. They were great,and there were a lot of times myface didn’t hit the wind.” When toldthat he had to finish the race off inthe end, his reply was again humble,“Because of the team I had justenough to pull it off, and felt goodtoday.” Yes, Jeff Louder is a greatrider no doubt, but even a better person.His team director Gavin Chilcottcertainly agreed, “Jeff has certainlybecome a great team leader, provingthat he can handle the pressure andsucceed.” In the end, BMC also tookthe overall team G.C.When riding with the team beforethe race started, I heard Louder makethe comment, “No worries” in avery calming fashion to his team. Iasked Mr. Chilcott if he heard that,“Certainly, it’s an Aussie term I heardsailors use that has kind of stuck withthe team.” It certainly did, with clearsailing to the end.Final GC1. SEPTEMBER <strong>2008</strong> cycling utah.com 19Cyclist is Hit, Run Off the Road on TrainingRideAn infuriated motorist allegedly intentionally used his vehicle to hit acyclist training at the same time that the Tour de Park City was held onSaturday, August 2.Shane Dunleavy was riding with a team of cyclists on the Mirror LakeHighway near Kamas when the incident occurred. According to witnesses,Alexander Jason Barto angrily swerved his truck into Dunleavy knockinghim from his bike. Witnesses also stated that Dunleavy barely escapedbeing run over by pushing his bike away as Barto’s truck rumbled over it.Dunleavy said just before the accident he was riding next to anothercyclist and the two were riding tight to the shoulder of the highway.Dunleavy also said that Barto, who allegedly swerved into other ridersbefore he reached Dunleavy, yelled at the bikers to get off the road.“I yelled back that I had a right to be on the road,” said Dunleavy.Dunleavy said Barto’s door hit his knee and he pushed away fromthe truck and broke off his mirror. He said that Barto became even moreirate as he increased his speed hitting Dunleavy with his front wheel andfender, dragging him off the road into the dirt.“The moment seemed surreal. I thought, is this really happening?”Dunleavy survived the incident with only minor injuries, but his bikewas twisted and mangled beyond repair. Summit County District Attorneyoffice said Barto is being charged with two counts of aggravated assaultand seven misdemeanors. An initial hearing is set for <strong>September</strong> 15th inSummit County Third District Court.Despite being involved in this frightening accident Dunleavy wasback out on the road riding two days later. He said there needs to be anincreased awareness from both drivers and cyclists. “It’s so frustrating forcyclists, sometimes we just can’t get over far enough,” said Dunleavy.“What scared me the most about this accident is reading the commentson line that people wrote after reading about my accident,” said Dunleavy.“There were so many anti-cyclist comments; people actually said thatcyclists deserved it.”-Jennifer Barth24 Hours of Moab is the Burning Man ofBicyclingOn Columbus Day weekend, October 11th and 12th, Behind-the-Rocks, Moab will be transformed into something extra-terrestrial whenthe world's top mountain bike ultra-endurance racers gather to determinewho is the fastest of them all.Pro riders will be racing for the single largest cash purse in the sport,expected to be upwards of $20,000. Also, a total of 1.5 million prizes will berewarded to the students during their progression through the school year.The program challenges students to read at least 20 minutes a dayduring the entire school year. Bikers and camera buffs canride through scenery that is positively"arresting" without assuming therisk of being busted by going onlyas far as Red Canyon-gateway toBryce Canyon. Even if you were tocrop-out the scenery, the trails themselveswould be well worth the trip.Losee, Casto and Cassidy Trailson the north side of Red Canyon areworth exploring, but if time is short,stay to the south side of highway 12and ride Thunder Mountain Trail.This non-motorized trail exploresRed Canyon's hinterlands beyondthe steady stream of "take-a-photoand-run"tourists who are making abeeline for Bryce Canyon NationalPark. Little do they know that tranquilityabounds just a stone's throwfrom the highway, and that photosworthy of display on the cover ofthe park's brochure are easy to snap.On Thunder Mountain Trail you cangorge on scenic delicacies and ridethrough them, too.Notes on the trail:Thunder Mountain Trail followsa machine-cut singletrack acrossundulating hillsides populated withdispersed pines. In an effort to makethe trail user friendly, the first fewmiles undulate at the 8,000-footlevel. Even so, you'll work yourgears constantly, perfect your shortradiusturns, and pump out a dozeninterval-like climbs as the routeangles in and out of sharp hollowsthat crease the hillsides. Sceneryis lackluster initially; then it growsquickly to intriguing and even dazzlingabout three miles out wherethe trail crosses a prominent ridgeand affords a provocative view ofThunder Mountain with its tieredlimestone columns. (Ironically, thereis no "Thunder Mountain" on anymaps. It's just a name the PowellRanger District conjured up for thetrail. But if there was a ThunderMountain, this prominent butte,wrapped in a shawl of glowing limestone,would be it.)A half-mile farther, the trailclimbs Thunder Mountain's southflank to the route's high point, bothin elevation and scenery. The paththen clips the rim of a horseshoeshapedbowl adorned with ornateand delicate erosional featurescarved from the cream- and salmoncoloredPink Cliffs-the same rocksthat have brought Bryce CanyonNational Park its fame. The paththen coils and plunges down theslope through audacious switchbacksthat might perplex even intrepidbikers. The trail's precarious routingtakes you through the heart ofthe bowl you peered into earlierand out along a barren ridge, whererust-colored formations fill deep,craggy canyons on both sides. Withthe Sunset Cliffs rapidly approachingfrom the west, the trail is forcedoff the divide into a chasm drenchedin fiery hues. Upon breaching thecliffs' base, the trail turns north,rises briefly through scattered pines,and then descends gradually alonga sandy wash to the highway at thebeginning of Red Canyon.No car shuttle? No problem.Ride Thunder Mountain Trail as a15-mile loop by linking to the RedCanyon Bike Trail. You'll add onabout 5 miles of gentle climbingbut take in an hour or so of nationalpark-caliber scenery. And sinceyou're off the highway, you're safefrom rubbernecking tourists in theirlumbering RVs.DetailsLength: 8 miles one-way, or 15miles as a loop.Tread: All singletrack (paved biketrail if you ride the loop)Physical Difficulty: Intermediate.The numerous intermittent climbsrequire short bursts of power.Technical Difficulty: Moderate. Thetrail twists through many hollowsthat require short radius turns andrapid shifting. The trail can be roughat times, especially if horses get to itwhen it's wet. Brief but precipitousswitchbacks off Thunder Mountainmight require periodic dismounts.Elevation Gain: Although the onewayride has a net elevation loss ofabout 1,200 feet, you'll gain about1,000 feet along the way because ofincremental climbs. Tack on an additional1,200 feet of vertical if youride the loop for a total gain of about2,200 feet.Trailhead Access: From Panguitch,take US 89 south 7 miles; thenturn left/east onto UT 12 forBryce Canyon National Park andEscalante. Thunder Mountain's western(lower) trailhead is at the mouthof Red Canyon at the Dixie NationalForest boundary. To reach the eastern(upper) trailhead, drive 5 milesthrough Red Canyon. She has recently added aBionx battery pack to her bike.<strong>Cycling</strong> <strong>Utah</strong>: Jessica, youre a busyResident in medicine, you have afamily, so why is riding a bike towork important given your life?How much are you able to ride?Jessica Galaviz: I just like to ride.I like to ride through the neighborhoodsand see the houses and yards.Im always trying new things forexercise (having 2 toddlers at homeI dont get to the gym as often as Idlike.) I feel energized when I get towork, and it saves nearly a gallon ofgas each day. As a result of family,residency and the relative slownessof a bike, I rode perhaps oncea week prior to getting my Bionx.Pulling up the hills towards theUniversity, bad weather, and inevitableerrands after work also keptme from commuting as much as Iwould like.C.U.: So then you put an electricallycharged battery on your bike toassist your commute? How did thathappen and what changed in yourcommuting?J.G.: I got the idea of a motor froman acquaintance that I bowl with. HeAn Electric-Assist Bicycle Commutementioned a friend that had a littlegas motor on his bicycle. I didnt likethe idea of a gas motor, so I lookedinto electric ones. When I found theBionx, I knew that was the one forme.C.U.: How did you arrive at thatchoice? What features did you consider?J.G.: I really wanted to keep mybike a bike. With the Bionx I stillneed to pedal, and going uphill Istill pedal pretty hard, it just takesless time to get to the top. I like howI can choose the assistance level Iwant, and can even recharge the batterywhile going downhill. Its easyto switch between levels, or turn themotor on/off, as there is a little computeron the handlebars. I purchasedthe cheapest battery, though it isthe heaviest (9#) and lowest watts(250). The furthest Ive ridden is 15miles on one charge, which includessome downhill-recharge time andsome time in the lowest assist mode.It takes about 3-4 hours to fullyrecharge when empty. The companyclaims 500 charges. Overall it iseasy to use. The monitor has littlebuttons for that change the assistancelevel. I basically do not needto change gears anymore, I use theassistance level now as my gears.C.U.: So you went from commutingonce a week before Bionx to??J.G: I now ride two, sometimes 3,days a week. In addition I get to seemy kids in the morning after theyawaken (very important), pay lessto the nanny for coming early, run<strong>Cycling</strong>utah.com for trails,eventlinks, photos, back issues, links, andmore!a few errands if necessary on theway home from work, and not beas sweaty and in need of a showerwhen I arrive at work. In addition tocommuting, I now use my bike withthe Bionx for going to the store orother little errands. By riding more,I have more energy to get throughmorning conference in my residencyand the ride home helps me unwind.Overall I am a happier person.C.U: Riding your bike to work andexercise is obviously important toyou. As an M.D., can you discussthe benefits of exercising regularlyon longevity and quality of life?J.G.: I did a search of the medicalliterature and found hundreds ofarticles. There is a huge fountain ofevidence that regular exercise helpsa person live longer, keeps bonesstrong, and helps prevent diabetes,high blood pressure and obesity (aswell as the pathologies associatedwith obesity). This is important inall stages of life, toddlers to elderly.C.U.: Can these same benefits beapplied specifically to bicycling towork on a regular basis? Can bicyclingcounter some of the effects ofaging (muscle mass loss, balancebone density, cognitive effects,heart disease, arthritis) for us babyboomers?J. G.: There are a few studies outthere that look specifically at bicycling,but one interesting one studiedthe use of bicycle training to helpregain balance after a stroke. As youmight imagine the outcomes weregood. Another study looked at activecommuters and found a reductionin the risk of having cardiovasculardisease, especially in women.There are many studies looking atweight training exercise to counterthe effects of aging. These haveshown that regular weight trainingcan build muscle mass, strengthenbones, and improve gait (walking)in the elderly with a significant loweringof mortality. Bicycling can bemore easily tolerated by those witharthritis, and may provide a way toget at least some exercise, especiallyafter joint replacement.C.U.: Now that you have a motor toassist you, do you look and feel likeLance Armstrong going up the hillswith a super charged VO2 max ?J.G.: Well, I dont know if I look likeLance, but the hills are much lesschallenging! It has been kind of funto pass people going uphill!! Theonly time I shift out of high gearis if I have to stop at a light goinguphill-the motor doesnt kick in untilIve made a full pedal stroke usually,so getting going is still hard sometimes.The acceleration is awesomeonce the motor kicks in! Alex figured hecould finish no worse than one spotbehind Bart Gillespie to claim the<strong>2008</strong> series crown.Grant made all that pre-racefiguring a mute point, as he wonthe 28-mile Pro Men test at the 15thannual Wolverine Ridge event.The series finale was held on arugged, rocky course in the UintaMountains in northern <strong>Utah</strong>. TheWolverine Ridge layout is locatedabout 25 miles south of Evanston,Wyo. on the Mirror Lake ScenicByway (Highway 150).The Aug. 9 series finale was adouble points race, making the finalrace that much more important."I was in first but not by muchover Bart," Grant said about hispre-race strategy. "So I think I didthe math down to if Bart beat me byonly one place, I could still take theseries. So that's what I was hopingfor."This one was double points, soit was extra important, a lot ridingon this."Grant won the Pro Men racewith a time of 2 hours, 4 minutesand 15 seconds. Alex finished 45seconds ahead of Rob Squires ofTeam Devo/Binghams, and about 90seconds ahead of Gillespie, who wasthird in 2:05.44 riding for Monavie/Cannondale.The Cup Series final standingsin the Pro Men division found Grantin first with 1,433 points. Gillespiefinished second with 1,324 points.David Welsh of Team Kuhl/Scottwas a distant third at 814.At the annual post-race awardsceremony at Depot Square inEvanston, Grant talked about thetough Wolverine Ridge course. Thestart/finish line is 8,300 feet in elevation.The race bible lists the highestpoint on the course, WolverineTrailhead, at 9,371 feet."It's definitely challenging," Alexsaid. "I think it starts at 9,000 feetor so. All courses above 9,000 feetare definitely tough. The climbs aredeceptive. It doesn't seem steep, butit is, and it's pretty bumpy, too."Most of the course is two-laneATV and cross-country ski trailslittered with an abundance of rocksand tree roots.Grant said most of the other venuesin the Cup Series aren't nearly asrocky and rugged as the WolverineRidge course."Definitely not," he said. "Eventhough it's mostly double track, it'sdefinitely rougher that most othercourses. The challenges are just tryingto stay smooth the whole time,and save energy a little bit."There's that one steep climbcoming up the back, that's a beast(Wolverine Trailhead). You comeoff a dirt road and you take a left,and you go up, and it's just grannyring. After that it's all kind of down(hill), but you don't get a lot of restbecause it's rough and you've got topeddle, too."'BEE'-FALLENHeather Holmes of Team Kenda/Titus/Hayes survived a pre-racecrash to win the Pro Women 28-mileevent at Wolverine Ridge.Pro Women winner Heather Holmes (710) of Team Kenda/titus/Hayescruises along the Wolverine Ridge race course. Holmes finished nearlyseven minutes ahead of runnerup Roxanne Toly.Steve Holcomb (819) of Kamas, <strong>Utah</strong>, likely agreed with the signs as hefinished a rugged, final climb at the Wolverine Ridge race. The 61-yearoldHolcomb was fifth in the Men's 57-Plus division.Holmes finished the two-lapcircuit in 2 hours, 31 minutes and36 seconds. Roxanne Toly of TeamJans Sport was runner-up in 2:38.13.Erica Powers (Revolution) finishedthird, about 40 seconds behind Toly.Powers claimed the Pro WomenCup Series championship with 1,211points. KC Holley of Mad DogCycles was second in the series with1,116 points. Holmes finished thirdwith 803 points and Toly fourth at689.At the post-race awards festivities,Holmes was experiencing apainful, swollen hand and wrist thatshe injured in the pre-race mishap."I hurt really bad - I think it hurtsworst now because I stopped (riding),"Heather said.Holmes said she battled with abee in her pre-race warm-up, and thebee apparently came out ahead."What I like to do for warm-upis, I actually try and go ride part ofthe loop, part of the racecourse,"Heather said. "So I rode the smalllap, and probably five minutes fromthe end I was coming down a hilland a bee flew into my glasses. Iwas trying to swat it and I fell."Heather said the fall happenedabout 10 minutes before the ProWomen were called to the startingline. She took off her glove, andher wrist didn't appear to be veryswollen, so she decided to stay inthe race.Despite the injury, Holmes saidshe had a great ride over a toughcourse."I actually really liked thecourse," she said. "It's definitely different,because at the national racesright now, we're racing between anhour-15 (minutes) to an hour-45.Today was around 2 1/2 hours or so,so it was definitely a little longerthan I am used to. Sometimes thoseare really nice, you get a good, longride in."Aspen trees were beautifultoday, I loved it. You know what,when you show up and the course isbeautiful, it makes it easier to race,because you're excited about beingthere and going through everythingand seeing all the landscape."Holmes pulled away fromPowers late in the Pro Women race,thanks to Erica's struggles with tireissues."I think (Erica) was pretty closeto me for awhile, and then she hadsome tire problems," Holmes said."And then after that, I was ridingwith a lot of the expert men."Powers survived the tire woes towin the Pro Women series title."I had to stop and put air in mytire three times," Erica said. "I lostmaybe four minutes. It was a slowleak."Powers said she was in secondplace in the series standings enteringthe final event. She competed in 11of 12 series events in <strong>2008</strong>, missingonly the Snowbird race. KC Holleydid not compete at Wolverine Ridge.Powers enjoyed racing theWolverine Ridge layout."It's a good course, I like it,"Erica said. "It's tough, and thedownhill's fun. Due to constructionon 9400 South, this year’scourse instead began at the SwampLot on Wasatch Boulevard and followedWasatch to the mouth of thecanyon, which left riders with oneless hill to climb. I drove across the countryin a Toyota Corolla with a ‘78Centurion mounted on the back. Thebike was deep purple with a creakyderailleur, a tank used to haul meacross Ohio State’s campus while Iearned a useless degree in French.When I settled in <strong>Utah</strong>, my boyfriend,Jim, who lived close to thecanyons, dragged me up to StormMountain one day. I was dumbfoundedat the grade of the hill andinsistent that no one could make itup the “whole canyon” on a bike-- Iwas in decent shape, after all, frommy Jazzercise classes and frequentFrisbee playing back in Ohio. Jimlaughed as I gasped for breath at thewater treatment plant and watchedme turn around, riding home mad.A few days later I oiled the chainon the Centurion and tried again;this time Little Cottonwood Canyondished me some humble pie- I gotoff the bike and walked it five or sixtimes before turning around at StickRock, again calling Jim names as Ispun home and took a nap. Thankgoodness I had a stubborn streak— I inched my way farther andfarther up those canyons as the summerwaned, each time Jim leaningagainst his bike ahead, waiting forme and acting as if I were made ofheavy metal. I wanted to assassinatehim and his shimmering summermuscles.By August, Jim had asked ifI’d like to try a little race calledthe Snowbird Hill Climb. In myinnocence, I agreed. I rolled intoa packed Smith’s parking lot thatwas buzzing with wiry, nervouslookingpeople on wind trainers.Feeling slightly self-conscious withmy heavy Centurion and my roughhewncycling wear- a cotton OSUtee shirt and clunky tennis shoes- Iwas calm but ill prepared. I had notwarmed up or stretched, I had nospecial drinks or energy bars, noteam logo. “L’idiote”, they’d havecalled me in French….The race started. Jim was gonein thirty seconds. Bikes squeezedaround me. Praying mantis-shapedriders flew by me in a colored blur.I was just getting adjusted…. it wasoddly quiet, then the sucking soundof grunting , heavier riders comingfrom behind, ready to swallow meup… “God help me,” I thought. Thesteep incline of the canyon pulled atmy wheel… I committed to the race.I forced a rhythm in the creakingbike, staring stubbornly at the roadahead. Climbing, climbing, alwaysclimbing-- toward the unreachableski area high in the sky. Getting serious,I passed groups of mellow typesand office workers, flat tire fixersand old timers. I zigzagged throughthe Seven Sisters and then cussedmy way through Tanner’s Flat. Icursed the hill, the asphalt, the lackof flat spots, Jim. The bike wasdoing me proud. Finally, I clearedthe Maybird stretch. Wewaited for our times to be posted.Still energetic, I waved my bibnumber to Ed Chauner who wastossing prizes. He looked over at meand called out my number— flippingme a water bottle and socksalong with a wink. As fate wouldhave it, I placed fourth in my agegroup (if memory serves, my timewas 1hr 6 minutes and I won agift certificate to a jewelry store).We rode back down the canyon,the wind whipping the sides of mygiddy face. I was addicted to bikesfrom that day forward.In spite of sleek new bikes (fromJim, who I married), clip-in shoes,fancy jerseys, heart rate monitors,one spot crossing the finish line at50:26:00 followed by Inga Travis at51:26:00.Peterson, 21, also won the hillclimb last year. “I love it because it’ssteep and long,” he said. Petersonsaid he started the first hill in thelead, but then sat back with the leadpack on the first flat portion. AsPeterson kept pace with the otherriders, Bryner rode up and closed inon Peterson, preparing. About halfwaythrough the race Peterson andBryner broke away from the otherriders as they battled for the numberone position.“About three miles from the finishI pulled away to the front,” saidPeterson.Peterson, who just returnedfrom the World Cup in Europe, is aCategory 2 rider. He has been racingsince he was 16, and trains on theSnowbird ascent often.Welsh, 25, pulled into the leadfor the women’s Category 1-2-3after the second mile. The numerouscyclists in the race made it tough tomaneuver. “It was kind of crazy atfirst,” said Welsh. This was her firsttime competing in this race, but sheis no stranger to hill climbs. Sherecently won the women’s Category1-2-3 at the Sundance Hill Climb.ipods, and a better racing strategy,I’ve never been as fast, or as satisfied,as I was on that first HillClimb. I attribute the magic of thatclimb to a combination of desperationand charm, fear and blessings,the wind at my back as I wound anold Centurion up Little Cottonwood“I live for the hill climb,” saidWelsh.Ultra-WidomakerFor a select bunch of goats,a mountain bike climb up to thetop of the Tram followed the roadrace. The Ultra-Widowmaker raceadded another 3,000 feet climbto Snowbird’s Hidden Peak ontop of the brutal climb up LittleCottonwood. Riders were placedby the combined times from thetwo climbs. Only 37 riders from theSnowbird Hill Climb competed inthe Ultra-Widowmaker.Rob Squire (Devo), 18, tookfirst place in the Ultra-Widowmakerwith a time of 1:49:42. Squire, whowon the Junior Nationals last yearin Vermont, said he was cautiousfor the first part of the race. He saidhe did not know where to go andwas not familiar with the course.Squire said he saw Pete Kuennenanncoming up from behind and tried tomaintain a gap. When he reached theswitch backs he realized he had lostthe other riders. “At this point I wasalone, and I knew I would win,” saidSquire.A few riders exhausted from theprevious race said they could noteven imagine jumping on a mountainbike to start another hill climb.Jenny Moser, a citizen participantin the Snowbird Hill Climb said,“I might have entered the Ultra-Widowmaker, but I’m not a goodmountain biker.”Riders in the Ultra-Widowmakershowed their hardcore determinationand training could carry them to thetop.“This race was really tough. Idon’t think someone could do itunless they had been training reallyhard. You can’t just do this on awhim,” said Squire.See results on page 22.Canyon. 26 cycling utah.com SEPTEMBER <strong>2008</strong>touringTouring in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National ParksAbove: Ashley Patterson stopping for a quick glance at the Tetons toweringover her.By Tom DiegelNational Parks in the US are havealways been represented a strangeanachronism; the crowds, the regulations,the overdevelopment and overcommercializationjuxtaposed againstwhat even the most grizzled outdoorveterans grudgingly admit is not onlysome of the most beautiful terrain inthe world but also some of the highestlevel and quality of serious outdoorpursuits, including cycling. <strong>Utah</strong>has more than its share of incrediblenational parks that offer world-classdesert recreation, so it’s sometimeseasy to forget about the parks to thenorth that are almost the same distancefrom Salt Lake; Grand Tetonand – the granddaddy of them all –Yellowstone as cycling destinations.Jackson and Bozeman locals arewell-aware of the three weeks in thespring when both parks have beenplowed clear of snow but are not yetopen to vehicles, which offers anincredible opportunity to see the parksunencumbered by cars and crowds.After Memorial Day, however, thereputations of both parks being fulltilttraffic jams of Winnebago’s andrented mini-vans likely keeps prospectivecyclists out of these incredibleareas. However, since we had a familyreunion in Big Timber, Montanaand wanted to arrive ready to turnthe volume down low for a coupleof days, and since the only logicalroute was through the two parks andup and over the Beartooth Highway,we decided to ride there and take ourchances with the legendary trafficover the 4th of July weekend.Although the views of the Tetonsare practically a cliché due to theproliferation of Ansel Adams printsout there, the truth is that riding yourbikes along the base of the Tetons isstill a pretty amazing experience. Asthe Tetons give way to the more rollinggreen hills of Yellowstone, thenatural beauty changes from verticalrelief to amazing views of the hugeYellowstone lake, incredible thermalzones, and of course – Yellowstone’sprimary draw – the wildlife. Yes, yes;you may say, of course that’s whatTeton and Yellowstone are like; we’veall been there on the mandatory familyvacation in the family truckster orhave fond memories of Yogi Bear andBooboo. But how’s the riding? In aword – it’s great. It’s true that a) thereare very few roads, and b) the trafficgets concentrated onto those roads,but what we realized is that peopleon vacation typically drive prettyslowly, the speed limit in the parks islow, most of the time there’s a prettyhealthy shoulder with good pavementand none of the urban detritus thatflats tires around here, and there areno trucks. Huge motorhomes, yes,but no big delivery trucks speedingto get to their next stop, and most ofthe time the motorhomes are goingpretty slowly. And – contrary to thevery volatile weather of April – thesummer weather is pretty stable anddramatically cooler than the searingheat of Salt Lake and the parks to thesouth.One of the great aspects of longrides is the ability to see the landunfold in front of you, and this pointis emphasized in national parks asyou realize that car occupants feelcompelled to stop and get out at thescenic overlooks, but as a cyclist –being high and on the right side ofthe road – the whole route is one longscenic overlook. That said, there area few highlights, such as YellowstoneFalls and the Grand Canyon overlooksthat require some serious co-minglingwith our fellow tourists. On one handthe crowds and types of people thatmake up these crowds are somewhatappalling, but – if taken with the rightattitude – it can also be a fascinatinglook at our society. We typically don’tseem to do much with what we wouldconsider to be “Mainstream America”,and if there is ever a magnet for MA,it’s Jellystone. It’s not something thatshould ever take up much of yourtime, but the brief glimpse you canAbove: Rolling up the Lamar valley, keeping an eye out for grizzlies andwolves.Below: In the foothills of Montana's Beartooths, "Big Sky" meets bigplains.get in the parks is unforgettable.One great aspect of the nationalparks is that they are required to keepcampground spots open for hikers andcyclists. Camping “wild” near roadsin the park is illegal and – consideringwe didn’t bring any bear-proofcontainers and forgot cord to stringour food up – ill-advised, so daily wewould roll up to a campground thathad a “full” sign on it and get thechoicest spot there - usually somewhatseparated from the rest of the cars/RV’s - and have it to ourselves, for thevery-reasonable price of $5. And thecampgrounds are usually situated nearsome pretty amazing sites that – aftera long day in the saddle – are a shortand nice walk.We had been advised to wake uppre-dawn and get the bulk of our ridingdown in the morning, before thetouron-ghouls uncoupled their RV’sfrom their campsites, but realisticallywe were on vacation like everyoneelse and didn’t feel like busting out ofbed in the dark, so we didn’t bother,and it was fine. The other traffic“issue” is bear/buffalo/wolf “jams”;any time any wildlife gets near theroad, traffic comes to a virtual stop,which – again – keeps the rushingcars to a minimum (the only wolfjamwe saw was due to a canine thatlooked suspiciously like a coyote, butanything to slow traffic…).As we progressed north and east,there are fewer formal roadside attractionsand therefore fewer cars as well.The Lamar Valley is an extraordinarilybeautiful valley that is hometo hundreds of wolves and bears,and because the NE corner of thepark exits into the hamlet of CookeCity which itself is in the middleof nowhere, the car count droppedto one every few minutes. The NEentrance is also the gateway to theextraordinary Beartooth Highway,which climbs at a mild 4-5% gradefor 25-30 miles, tops out at 11,000feet with breathtaking views, andthen plunges down even further toRed Lodge. From there, with a goodmap and good sense, it’s easy to findincredible roads that undulate acrossrolling wheat fields and ultimatelylead to a very palatable frontage roadadjacent to I-90 to complete a loopback towards Bozeman.If you are looking to bust out ofSalt Lake’s summer heat and see someof America’s most incredible terrainand don’t mind a little traffic and afew humorous glimpses into what therest of America does for Vacation,heading north for a bike tour of theparks is a worthy jaunt.If you go...From Jackson WY, throughthe park, and out the NE cornerto Cooke City is 165 miles andhas generally well-spaced campgroundsand park grocery storesto resupply. Cooke City to RedLodge is 65 miles, with one shortand one very long but mellow(and gorgeous) climb to 11,000feet over Beartooth Pass, andthere are virtually no amenities inthat stretch. We finished our tourby traversing back West towardBig Timber, MT (another 90+miles) and did so on a variety ofquiet and beautiful country roads;some paved and some gravel.There are opportunities to dobig loops. From Big Timber, thenext valley to the west is the aptlynamed Paradise Valley - betweenthe stunning Absaroka Mountainsand the Bridgers – you can goback up the Yellowstone riverto the park’s north entrance, orBeartooth Pass can be bypassedand the equally stunning DeadIndian Pass – to Cody – can beused to loop back around to thesouth. There are shuttles to/fromSLC to Jackson, and also fromJackson to West Yellowstone (wehitched a ride from Big Timberto Idaho Falls, where we caught ashuttle back to SLC).


28 cycling utah.com SEPTEMBER <strong>2008</strong>Mechanic's CornerPain in the Gears: Repairing a Bent Derailleur on the TrailBy Tom JowLast month while on theMcKenzie River Trail in Oregon, mywife and I bashed a big rock withthe rear derailleur on our tandem.True to Tom Jow form, I just yankedthe derailleur out of the spokes andwe continued on our way. An houror so later, as we shifted going upa hill, the chain went over the bigcog and into the spokes. Way intothe spokes. In fact, in order to getthe chain out I was forced to removethe wheel and chain, kicking andscreaming all the way. And then lastweek on the Mid-Mountain trail,guess what, the chain went into thespokes again.bend the hanger until it is as closeto parallel with the centerline of thebike as possible. Sometimes, butrarely, this can be done by hand.What? Don’t have a spare hangeror the proper tools in your bag? Inthis case we need to keep the chainand derailleur out of the spokes.This can be done by adjusting thelow stop screw (marked with an ‘L’)with a screwdriver. (You do havea screwdriver, don’t you?) Startby placing the chain and derailleurunder the lowest gear possiblewithout the derailleur contacting thespokes. Then, turn the screw clockwisegently until it stops. This willlimit the movement in the directionof the spokes, hopefully avoidingfurther complications during the restof the ride.In the unlucky event of a derailleurmishap, one of these techniquesshould get you back home or tothe car. Having a spare derailleurhanger and the proper tools makesthis just slightly more inconvenientthan having a flat. Me? The low stop screwon bottom.Upon further investigation (athome), I discovered the derailleurhanger had been bent inwards duringthat encounter with the rock. Butwhen the chain goes into the spokes,the force of the chain also can bend,or even break the hanger. Whenthis occurs on the trail, what can bedone?Nearly all modern bicycles havea replaceable derailleur hanger. Thistab, which holds the derailleur, isdesigned to bend or break in theevent of a crash, rocks or some otherdebris. Doing so protects the frameand rear derailleur. By removing oneor two bolts, the derailleur hangercan be changed, the derailleur can beremounted and riding can continue.Some bikes, however, do nothave replaceable hangers. Or maybeyou don’t have a spare in your bag.What to do then? In some cases (noton aluminum frames), a steel or softaluminum replaceable hanger can berealigned with an adjustable wrenchor pliers (or at the bike shop withan alignment tool). Remove the rearwheel and with the rear derailleurstill attached, place the wrench orpliers over the hanger and derailleurmountingbolt. Gently but firmly
