Rotary and Reciprocating Pump Start-UpThe key to starting up a pump with compression packing is to make sure itleaks from the beginning. If you tighten compression packing to achieve zeroleakage, you will burn the packing and cause immediate failure. (Note: Graphitepacking such as our 686, 687 and 688 can be run virtually leak-free.)• After installing the packing rings, make up the bolts finger tight andcheck to make sure the gland face is parallel to the stuffing box face. This will insure even loading once you begin to tighten the gland nuts.• If an external lubrication source is being utilized, make sure it isfunctioning properly before starting up the pump.• Start the pump allowing a high initial leakage rate. During this process, the packing is seating and beginning to function.• After running the packing for 15-30 minutes, begin tightening thegland nuts one flat at a time until the desired leakage is obtained. Eightto ten drops per minute/per inch of shaft diameter is recommended.PTFE packings should be allowed to leak more to dissipate the heat thepackings generate through thermal expansion.• It is recommended that you check your leakage rate one hour afterestablishing it to make sure vibration has not caused the gland nuts toback-off which could lead to failure. In most cases zero leakage in valves is desired. In order for this to be achieved, you must tighten the packing completely before allowing the process pressureto seal the valve. Torque the bolts to achieve a pressure on the packing that is25% greater than the process.Valve Start-UpUTEXHow to Install5
