<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferde <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010My dear ladies and gentlemen, here and now <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last day <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Show</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2010, with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last strength <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> myvoice and over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next nearly two hours, I will look back at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Show</str<strong>on</strong>g> with you, and present to you <strong>on</strong>ce again <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beautiful, our stars, namely all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> winners, reserve winnersand all those that have brought us joy over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last three days. Itis also my hope during this retrospecti<strong>on</strong> to enlighten you <strong>on</strong>ce again<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> judge’s motivati<strong>on</strong> and reas<strong>on</strong>s for selecting particular groups, particular horses and particular winners.Let’s not be vexed by a few c<strong>on</strong>stant rainmakers here in Tyrol, butinstead let’s take heart in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sun that is smiling down <strong>on</strong> us now, andalso in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tens <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> thousands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> visitors here and great atmospherethat is so appropriate for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Let’s also not bedragged down by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> few c<strong>on</strong>stantly negative individuals that aresurrounded by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir own turbulent situati<strong>on</strong>s; this is my wish at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this show critique. With that we come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first presentati<strong>on</strong> that we’ve prepared foryou. The first presentati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sists <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> winners and reserve winnersin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>’s in generati<strong>on</strong>s.I think it is important when <strong>on</strong>e presents a show commentary <strong>on</strong> aninternati<strong>on</strong>al scale that before embarking <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first presentati<strong>on</strong>,<strong>on</strong>e takes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opportunity to establish a little bit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> history anddevelopment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed and discuss <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following: where do wewant to go from here, what is our goal, what was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> goal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> breedstandards in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last decade, how much have we accomplished andhow would we like <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed to c<strong>on</strong>tinue to develop. I think this ishow we can best prepare ourselves for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding lines.170show <str<strong>on</strong>g>Commentary</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> world show <strong>on</strong> June 6, 2010held by President <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> federati<strong>on</strong> – Johannes schweisgutRight as <strong>on</strong>e looks at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first breeding line, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> winner collecti<strong>on</strong>, ahistory <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed presents itself. One examines <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> firststalli<strong>on</strong>, Nabucco, with over <strong>on</strong>e thousand covers making him certainly<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most frequently utilized <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>s in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>world, but ultimately it is quality, not quantity that is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> importantend product left behind by a stalli<strong>on</strong>. When <strong>on</strong>e looks at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> successes<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> N-line in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last few days, also in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> breadth, and <strong>on</strong>erealises that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> N-line began a mere 10 or 15 years ago, as it can beseen that Nabucco is actually <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> point <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> departure for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> success<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this line. Without <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Nabucco, we would certainly notbe where we find ourselves today. When <strong>on</strong>e examines <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>,he is perhaps not <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> embodiment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> modernity that we’d wish fortoday, because he is perhaps not <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> perfect leisure time horse, buthis legs are c<strong>on</strong>vincing – dry and fine, even at 23 years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age. Theharm<strong>on</strong>y <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his body structure, as well as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> expressi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his face;he also hasn’t lost <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last 23 years.Looking at history also means that we remember back a little as to how<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> has developed. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> was originally from Tyroland appeared first in 1870. In 1900 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were <strong>on</strong>ly 300 <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>horses, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> modern Tyrolean associati<strong>on</strong> was established first in1946 after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first breed associati<strong>on</strong> in Zams was founded in 1921.This was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed’s success. There were alwaysrumors floating around various medias that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> world had naturally developed fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, but not <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Tyrolean associati<strong>on</strong> – why? Here are a few clarifying numbers:In 1949, it was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time when every<strong>on</strong>e in comm<strong>on</strong> opini<strong>on</strong> in Tyrolowned a <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>. However, during this time <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were <strong>on</strong>ly 742

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010breeders in Tyrol with 897 mares, not even <strong>on</strong>e thousand mares. Today<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are over 3000 mares. This means that today we have overtriple <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses as we did in 1950, five yearsafter <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Breeders Associati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrol was establishedand four years after Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs was founded. So <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was a development upwards – no stagnati<strong>on</strong>, no recessi<strong>on</strong>,but actually a large success. That too is symbolic <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> us. And thispresentati<strong>on</strong> is perhaps also a symbol for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean associati<strong>on</strong>divisi<strong>on</strong>s, since we have stalli<strong>on</strong>s and horses from various regi<strong>on</strong>sthat stand here in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring, from Oberland to unterland, from Imst toEbbs. Where in 1960 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were 997 members, now <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are 1200.So it has also been <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trend to move upwards quickly and str<strong>on</strong>glysince <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 60s. Admittedly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong>s have moved around a bit. Youw<strong>on</strong>’t believe it, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> str<strong>on</strong>gest society fifty years ago was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Kitzbühel regi<strong>on</strong>, at that time, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> str<strong>on</strong>gest breeding regi<strong>on</strong> in Tyrol. With 183 members, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> str<strong>on</strong>gest society today (Imst) had atthat time <strong>on</strong>ly 37 members. There <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> shift took place. The societyin Weer remained relatively <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same with 100 members, as did Mittlereunterinntal with 50, but Obere Gericht grew from 50 membersin size to about 150 members in total today. The reverse was true inWildschönau, where 90 members dropped down to ten. The shiftwas <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore not in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r more that numbersin Oberland were str<strong>on</strong>gly augmented while in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> unterland <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean Associati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was some stagnati<strong>on</strong>. But over all, itis a success that we have greater numbers today than in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 50s, 60sand 70s, believe me. That dem<strong>on</strong>strates that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> is a moredesired horse <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrol now as it was before, and that we are still <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>number 1 breed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses in Tyrol – a positi<strong>on</strong> we will never c<strong>on</strong>cedeor come in danger <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> losing. But for now, let’s return to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring. The stalli<strong>on</strong> Nabucco, as stated earlier, is 23 years old and can beseen here with four generati<strong>on</strong>s. Behind him as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d generati<strong>on</strong>is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Nordtirol, a legend himself in his own right andalready 16 years old. Already an older stalli<strong>on</strong>, but he seems to beyounger when <strong>on</strong>e watches him jump and sees how active and dynamiche is under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> saddle. When <strong>on</strong>e observes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> duringbreeding seas<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stall, he fights nearly daily for his herd andis a real sports typ.Behind him, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> new stars, winner <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> younger stalli<strong>on</strong>s,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Novembernebel, who is nine years old. However, he isalready a successful breeding stalli<strong>on</strong> and with his progeny as reservewinner, he too shows something special here am<strong>on</strong>g three stalli<strong>on</strong>sin a row, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which two hold <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first and sec<strong>on</strong>d place in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>category <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>s with <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring. And <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> successi<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> generati<strong>on</strong>s is Novemberschnee, who is perhaps <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future. Wewill see how he develops. Still young, he is <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e year old – tooearly to reach any c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s, to early to say where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed willdevelop with him, but he shows tendencies, he has a lighter neck thatis perhaps <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> thinner side, but his modernity, his effortlessness –this is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trend <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future. We naturally wish that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se stalli<strong>on</strong>s would find <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>high alps during this wea<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r and at this time <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> year, ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r thanbe here down in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> valley. From tomorrow this young stalli<strong>on</strong> willalso be in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Alps, al<strong>on</strong>g with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs from his age category from<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean associati<strong>on</strong>. I would like to thank <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> four stalli<strong>on</strong>s for<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferdethis presentati<strong>on</strong>; we will see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m later individually. Special thanksnaturally also goes to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> keeper Engelbert Posch, who hashad <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Nabucco in his barn for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last 20 years. That is alsosomething special, when a stalli<strong>on</strong> is almost c<strong>on</strong>sidered a member<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> family.Nabucco had a short bout <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> illness two years ago, but recoveredbeautifully and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> care and food he receives at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Posch stablesis such that he gleams today in much <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same way as he did as ayoung stalli<strong>on</strong>.Before we move <strong>on</strong>to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next category, let me touch <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wea<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last few days <strong>on</strong>ce more. When <strong>on</strong>e looks at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wea<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r today, when <strong>on</strong>e looks at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> developmentover <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last few days, that is also perhaps a symbol for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed. At <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning, we had a difficult start. Only a few horses in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Tyrolean mountains find <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves at home in south and north Tyrol,in what was at that time <strong>on</strong>e Tyrol. The difficult start was perhaps <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rain <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opening day <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>world show, that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world war <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n became nearly a hurricane for<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>. The str<strong>on</strong>g rains during Wednesday night into Thursdaywas <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tinuati<strong>on</strong>, similar to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pressure that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed feltduring <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d world war. In fact <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> change <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed froma light, elegant horse descended from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Arabian at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginningto a small, round, bulky beast <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> burden had occurred by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> war. This rain for us was also a little symbolic because from <strong>on</strong>eminute to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sun came out and streamed down <strong>on</strong> us froma nearly cloudless sky, much in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same way that it was for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> founding <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>s Ebbs.Today we extend over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole world, during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 50s we movedvery quickly down from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mountains to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> flatlands, throughoutall <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> countries <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Europe and by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 50s we had takenour first step towards America and across our first ocean, which wasfollowed by expansi<strong>on</strong> to Asia, South America and down to Australia.Today, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s make <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir home in 70 countries throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>world; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> has earned <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sunshine like that which we’veseen here <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last few days. Our next presentati<strong>on</strong> is mares in generati<strong>on</strong>s.Here we will examine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> successi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> generati<strong>on</strong>s as well, thistime <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> female side. Whereas we looked at four generati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>stalli<strong>on</strong>s, here we examine five generati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mares. It is a specialview that I believe allows <strong>on</strong>e to see even more clearly than with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>stalli<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>stancy, development and trend where we are actuallygoing. We now greet <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> generati<strong>on</strong>al successi<strong>on</strong> winner starting with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mare Rialta. Rialta, 25 years old, after whom is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Rijana,18 years old, both from Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs, followed by Relie fromGerhard Berger from M<strong>on</strong>aco (11 years old), her daughter Rüga(6 years old) and lastly Rosaria, a yearling from Belgium owned byD<strong>on</strong>ny Verkammen. As you can see, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are three nati<strong>on</strong>s united in this lineage.Generati<strong>on</strong>s not c<strong>on</strong>centrated in <strong>on</strong>e country, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r a lineagespread over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world; I think that is a symbol <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this presentati<strong>on</strong>.When <strong>on</strong>e observes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first mare, Rialta, who is 25 years old aspreviously stated, <strong>on</strong>e doesn’t see any indicators <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this age. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferde <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010competes in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show now as she did before; we will see her thisafterno<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> driving school from saddle and she is still part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>dressage quadrille. There she is currently <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reserve, but she is stillbest suited now as she was before, diligently at work with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> smallestand youngest children riders daily. L<strong>on</strong>gevity, and that pairedwith character and temperament. Generati<strong>on</strong>-lineage that is pro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> even more breeding lines, even more improvements in quality, even more modernity introduced in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed – this is exactly whatwe wish to see. When <strong>on</strong>e examines this line, it’s as though <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ringhere were cut from a mold: all have w<strong>on</strong>derful necks, even <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>oldest, all have well-defined wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, all also have good top linesleading to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> loin area, perhaps naturally a little weak back in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>oldest horse. But that also can’t be true as after over 15 foals, thismare had until three years ago <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e time no foal, which alsospeaks for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed. When <strong>on</strong>e sees in her <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dry, fine fundamentor when <strong>on</strong>e sees <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>on</strong>g fetlocks, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <strong>on</strong>e recognises <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> elasticity, springy suspensi<strong>on</strong> and for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rider, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> comfort, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> movement.Of course, we also want to see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> classic back, not just <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>l<strong>on</strong>g fetlocks. But <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> combinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se individual pointsin a horse – that is what creates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end product <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a all-aroundleisure horse and is what is truly represented by this line. Or naturallyalso <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d horse, <strong>on</strong>e generati<strong>on</strong> fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, here with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>same neck, equally beautiful fr<strong>on</strong>t quarters and hindquarters thatdem<strong>on</strong>strate some improvements. Quality is also maintained in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>third mare. This maintenance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality within a horse generati<strong>on</strong>line, as shown in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Rijana who has already been presentedin four internati<strong>on</strong>al shows and has four times been rated as <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first two horses and has been winner at two European shows– this dem<strong>on</strong>strates that this horse c<strong>on</strong>stantly maintains quality. Not experiencing a single high point, not <strong>on</strong>ce in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir life havingsuccess at a single show, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r enjoying successes c<strong>on</strong>stantlyover <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> course <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nearly 20 years. We want that as well; not justfleetingly beautiful horses, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r naturally natured <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>swho are raised as much as possible with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ability to live in a herdand move freely. This ensures that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses are happy and c<strong>on</strong>tentand ensures <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir quality l<strong>on</strong>g-term. The same applies for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>next generati<strong>on</strong> Relie. She was also named best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> class twice inworld shows. She also dem<strong>on</strong>strates here over ten years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>sistentquality. Relie is also active as a dressage quadrille horse andwith riding children. This mare was purchased by an internati<strong>on</strong>allyrenowned athlete for his children. He could have purchased a horsefrom any breed, but he purchased a <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> because he believedthat <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best breed for children and because hebelieved that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse breeding lie in this horse and in thisbreed. I believe that such breeders, such owners, who could affordto purchase any horse and wish to purchase <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best horse in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>world, have indeed d<strong>on</strong>e so by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>.This pro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> is very, very important for us and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore we’re proud<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our famous breeders who have chosen <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed. The next horse in line is Rüga, also a mare who can be seen in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>show under saddle and with children. And we hope that with D<strong>on</strong>nyVerkammen in Belgium with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fifth generati<strong>on</strong> will also prove itselfin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future. When we are dealing with generati<strong>on</strong>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n naturally<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our world shows is also a c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>.172I want to extend my thanks in advance to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exhibitors who havemade this world show truly a world show. There really are individualwinners, because a winner can <strong>on</strong>ly be a winner when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are atleast 20 competitors in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show. Sport is nothing without competiti<strong>on</strong>.A breed competiti<strong>on</strong> is nothing if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re aren’t enough horses tocompete and at this show we really had plenty <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> competitors. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Federati<strong>on</strong>, founded in 1975, also active in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last 35 years, has today 29 member organisati<strong>on</strong>s.The first <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> world show, allocated by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>Federati<strong>on</strong>, was in 1990. There were 61 stalli<strong>on</strong>s exhibited and 346mares, for a total <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 407 horses. From <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n forward, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> momentumc<strong>on</strong>tinued upwards, but I believe that we have now come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> absolutehigh point. In 1995, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were 67 stalli<strong>on</strong>s and 569 mares, 2000had 90 stalli<strong>on</strong>s and 647 mares, in 2005, 101 stalli<strong>on</strong>s and a total <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>692 exhibited horses. This year in 2010 we’ve set a new record with112 stalli<strong>on</strong>s and a total <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 717 participating horses. For this, I wishto extend my most sincere thanks, for those who have come from allover <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world to Ebbs: your appearance here is not your resp<strong>on</strong>sibility,but your pride in presenting your accomplishment. When <strong>on</strong>ehas seen and heard <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internati<strong>on</strong>al competiti<strong>on</strong> atmosphere here,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <strong>on</strong>e comes to understand how attractive <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed is:<strong>on</strong>ce more, my deepest thanks, also to our dear <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> friendsfrom Germany, Italy, Belgium, and many o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r nati<strong>on</strong>s from around<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world. Thanks as well in particular to our spectators, some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>whom came here from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ne<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rlands, who have been a w<strong>on</strong>derfuland fair audience that has helped create a great atmosphere. But also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reserve winner generati<strong>on</strong> line that’s coming to us nowdem<strong>on</strong>strates special qualities. Perhaps it isn’t quite so easy when<strong>on</strong>e becomes older: as I said yesterday, she is a year younger than<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r first generati<strong>on</strong> mare, but some horses age earlier than o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs.Cushing syndrome, perhaps not known to every<strong>on</strong>e, is an equinedisease that appears in older horses that is treatable, but not easilycured; this is why Annette appears today outfitted in a thick coat. However, this mare appears in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring today with pride and a love <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>life despite this, perhaps because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her progeny. Annette has beena frequent winner at world shows in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> past but came in last place(24th) in her class in this show. Regardless, she appears with herprogeny here in this lively generati<strong>on</strong>al presentati<strong>on</strong>.In her time she was perhaps <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>mares in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world, though naturally today this is no l<strong>on</strong>ger <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case. The back is weakened, but she exhibits a tremendous fertility rateand has w<strong>on</strong> world champi<strong>on</strong>ships. Behind her is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d generati<strong>on</strong>:<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Astra. We will see Astra ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r two or three timestoday, and she w<strong>on</strong> best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> class as well. She was, above all, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> worldchampi<strong>on</strong> mare with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best progeny and was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> winner in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> generati<strong>on</strong>scompetiti<strong>on</strong>. I believe that such a mare is unique and she issomething special for me pers<strong>on</strong>ally: just a few days ago, I think <strong>on</strong>Wednesday, I gave an interview to a televisi<strong>on</strong> stati<strong>on</strong> and was askedby <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interviewer, which horse is your favorite? To this I replied, myfavorite horse is <strong>on</strong>e who hasn’t yet w<strong>on</strong>. She was always towards <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>fr<strong>on</strong>t, I believe she came in sec<strong>on</strong>d place five times, but she had neveryet w<strong>on</strong> – that was my favorite horse. He <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n absolutely wanted toknow which horse this was, but I didn’t want to answer right away. After <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> third inquiry, I finally answered that my favorite horse in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Astra. That she achieved her biggest success

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferdeat 17 years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age bolsters all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our c<strong>on</strong>fidence, I think. If <strong>on</strong>e showspoorly as a yearling, or doesn’t place well as a three year old, or evenisn’t at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> top <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heap as a nine year old, it doesn’t mean that <strong>on</strong>ehas reached <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> line. The true quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a breeding mare ina breeding show is dem<strong>on</strong>strated with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> progeny which can <strong>on</strong>ly beimpressively dem<strong>on</strong>strated later in life. But she is actually <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>dgenerati<strong>on</strong> in this progeny <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mares, and when you see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> charm, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>eye, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> alert expressi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rly figure – perhaps her back is alittle but-weak, al<strong>on</strong>g with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r mares behind her, but possessingplenty <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> charm and mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rliness – that is what we want to see in<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s. We d<strong>on</strong>’t want a small warmblood horse, we d<strong>on</strong>’t wantan oversized Arabian, we d<strong>on</strong>’t just want a show horse – we want amo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rly, hard-working, leisure horse with charm and perfect character.I believe this family represents this in particular, and naturallyso does <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following mare, Aspirina, owned by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berchtold familyfrom Innsbruck, who was world reserve champi<strong>on</strong> mare at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lastworld show. Today she is included in this generati<strong>on</strong> line and is probablyvery, very proud <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her daughter, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare A<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>na, who w<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>overall youth champi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Show</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2010. And that, too, is a success – not just winning <strong>on</strong>ce for beauty, not just becomingworld champi<strong>on</strong> horse a single time, but above all maintaining a focus<strong>on</strong> this quality to which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> judges here have attested and praisedand thusly named her world champi<strong>on</strong> mare, and passing this qualityal<strong>on</strong>g to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next generati<strong>on</strong>. A true world champi<strong>on</strong> must alsobe evidenced in her progeny. Without equally successful progeny toc<strong>on</strong>firm <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> genetic line, success in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding linecannot be ensured. When <strong>on</strong>e looks at this presentati<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n perhapsfor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeders <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> outside, <strong>on</strong>e can see exactly what horsebreeding means – namely, thinking in generati<strong>on</strong>s. I mainly wantedto retract that <strong>on</strong>e can clearly see exactly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same type in this family.Often <strong>on</strong>e hears that when a horse is hollow, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> owner is toblame. And when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foal is bad, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n it is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>’s fault; when<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foal is good, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeder deserves <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> credit. unfortunately,<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>tentimes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare is completely forgotten. And when <strong>on</strong>e sees <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se horses in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring and looks at both generati<strong>on</strong>lines, <strong>on</strong>e sees four and five generati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses who logicallyeach had a different fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. These five mares with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir five differentfa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next four, also with four different fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs. But lookat <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>iles <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se horses! Are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y not all very similar, are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ynot all nearly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same type and model? If <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mostimportant thing, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n each <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se mares should look like <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir sire. When <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mares look like <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir grandmo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>irgreat-grandmo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n you will see what I’m trying to say. Pleasealways c<strong>on</strong>sider <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare in breeding, not just <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>, sincea great maternal line in breeding will ensure successful progeny,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> genetic safeguard over generati<strong>on</strong>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> actual prerequisite forsuccess in breeding – this is what is proven with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se two generati<strong>on</strong>lines. I wish to thank <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following people for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> presentati<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se horses: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berchtold family, D<strong>on</strong>ny Verkammen, GerhardBerger and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs for a really beautiful overall presentati<strong>on</strong>that has shown us that true breeding success can <strong>on</strong>ly comefrom a distinguished maternal line, not by chance or from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> greateststalli<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> earth. Rarely will a world champi<strong>on</strong> be born to asec<strong>on</strong>d-rate mare.173

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferde <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010To this end, I implore breeders to be c<strong>on</strong>siderate in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future; thisis why we discourage crossbreeding with o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r breeds. We wish toc<strong>on</strong>tinue pure-breeding and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>reby ensure <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> genetics over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> resulting20 generati<strong>on</strong>s without undesired or uncalculated effects. Wehave achieved everything we want through pure-breeding. We haverefined <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> perfect leisure horse; when <strong>on</strong>e examines <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breedinglineage, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> effortlessness and elegance, it is clear that we’ve establisheddominance with breeding. Let us not bring defects into<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed from crossbreeding practices which would divide futuregenerati<strong>on</strong>s.In our next presentati<strong>on</strong> we will be looking at some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> maresagain, namely those <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first family. Now we will see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mareswith <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir progeny; this is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first high point in a breeding showwith this interesting presentati<strong>on</strong>. Because it is not just importantto maintain quality over generati<strong>on</strong>s, but it is perhaps even moreimportant that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare inherits <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dominant quality. Not a goodfoal here, a bad <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re, and no foal at all for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> third, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rfor a breeder it is most important for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding stock to presentc<strong>on</strong>sistent quality dominance. So it was for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> winning family thathas been selected, and it was my pers<strong>on</strong>al joy to see this h<strong>on</strong>or c<strong>on</strong>ferred<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Astra, a mare that is very close to my heart. Sheis in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring with three stalli<strong>on</strong>s from various age categories, <strong>on</strong>e<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whom is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Newstyle placed at Johann Maier in Wiesingfrom <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean associati<strong>on</strong>. I pray that this handler <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>resist from any acti<strong>on</strong>s that may make us laugh. Normally he is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong>e who sees to it that every<strong>on</strong>e is in stitches from laughter; thankyou Johann Maier, because without laughter and humor, breedingwouldn’t be any fun. Too much seriousness with animals leads <strong>on</strong>eto view situati<strong>on</strong>s from a single angle and probably lose sight <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r important aspects. Maier Hansi is most certainly a true horselover, an ardent <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeder, and he also ensures that we areentertained and gives both presenters and visitors <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chance to relax.A sincere thank you for that as well, dear handler <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Newstyle.Behind <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, I’m especially pleased to inform you that we havea breeding partnership that travelled a l<strong>on</strong>g, l<strong>on</strong>g way to be heretoday. I believe it’s nearly 1400 km that this horse has travelled,1400 km down from central Sweden and it will be ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r 1400km back; nearly 3000 km combined to attend this <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> worldshow. When we Tyroleans say, ugh, it is so important to leave <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>show three hours earlier, and I would prefer to be home <strong>on</strong> Sundayafterno<strong>on</strong> ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than here in a tent. What do you think that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Thorné and Anderss<strong>on</strong> families will say when tomorrow <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y headback north in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir truck ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r 1400 km back to Sweden, probablynot to arrive home before Tuesday evening! For this, our deepestthanks! Not just for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> presentati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this beautiful stalli<strong>on</strong>, but forgiving us and all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeders renewed motivati<strong>on</strong> to walk through<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> valley, begin anew and forget our daily cares; this, I believe, iswhat we all need.Only when we truly believe in this breed, when we place our pers<strong>on</strong>alaffinities in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> background, when we dedicate ourselves tothis breed ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than individual pers<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n can we achieveas much success with breeding in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future as we have to date. Tothis end, I want to ask also this in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future: Nachtmann, himselfa stellar model, will hopefully produce many <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring in Swedenwho will develope into good mares and stalli<strong>on</strong>s.174The last stalli<strong>on</strong> in this family with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number 102 is a yearlingstalli<strong>on</strong> and while he shows <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same vibrancy, requires more timeto develop. A yearling stalli<strong>on</strong> from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd will naturally not give<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impressi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a full-grown stalli<strong>on</strong> as yet, but <strong>on</strong>e can observe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> good breeding that will hopefully develop later, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potentialis certainly recognisable. Now we come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> female animals in this group led by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mareAspirina who we’ve seen earlier, because this mare owned by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Berchtold family from Innsbruck was also in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> generati<strong>on</strong> group. This family <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeders is most likely very proud, as this group <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>mares has three individual progeny al<strong>on</strong>gside <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> former reserveworld champi<strong>on</strong> Aspirina, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number 315 Alexandria, who is overallworld champi<strong>on</strong> mare in 2010. And here we have exactly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>model that we are aiming towards. I also believe what I said with<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>s: more than athleticism, though this is naturally importantbecause we breed for sport uses, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> versatility is also veryimportant. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show I always say <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are different breeds <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>horses for different usages: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are baroque horses, like Lipizzanersor Andalusians for baroque styles <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> riding, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are Arabiansfor l<strong>on</strong>g distance rides, imprecise but fast and a little crazy. Thereare trotters that are meant <strong>on</strong>ly to trot <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> race track and have o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rwiseno duties, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are pure dressage horses and show jumpersthat are specialised warmbloods, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are special horses to drive,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kladruber, for example, a classic old Austrian horse breed. Thereare p<strong>on</strong>ies for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> children and coldbloods for working. Why do weneed seven, ten, or fifteen different breeds when we can have <strong>on</strong>ebreed that combines all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se characteristics – that is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>.

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010One can do with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> everything <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y want to, perhaps notall to absolute perfecti<strong>on</strong>, but for 99% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse users, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ideal horse. For this reas<strong>on</strong>, we want horses like Alexandria, who radiate charm and femininity, simultaneously modern, withwell-defined wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, a lovely saddle bearing, oval ribbing that isboth sufficiently l<strong>on</strong>g and with a fine fundament, dry, clear with aan elastic movement with a swinging back. Even <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> betweenindividual body parts is tight and harm<strong>on</strong>ious with a slopingshoulder: this is what a true champi<strong>on</strong> horse should look like. A l<strong>on</strong>glengh <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> stride is <strong>on</strong>ly possible with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> correct limbs and a goodangle in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hind quarters, which she dem<strong>on</strong>strates even while in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring by reaching three horse owners. There is also ideal groundcover in her stride, ladies and gentlemen. Such horses, such models, will c<strong>on</strong>quer <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world even more in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future. But also Akropolis behind her, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> third mare <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berchtold familyin this lineage and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sister <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world champi<strong>on</strong> mare; she is alsoa very similar model. Perhaps a little more harm<strong>on</strong>ious, rounder andnot quite as modern, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are both equally w<strong>on</strong>derful examples. And look at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heads, beginning at mare 161 to 315, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n 473 to 559.Just look at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> head and you will see that Astra has handed down thisdominant quality to her progeny year after year, and year after yearhas produced top-level horses, which is just what we want to see.The sec<strong>on</strong>d mare family from Gut Hochreit dem<strong>on</strong>strates this dominant, modern high quality passed through generati<strong>on</strong>s in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sameway. Gut Hochreit is in Salzburg and is a breeder <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> TyroleanAssociati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> farms I know.It c<strong>on</strong>sists <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> two stables, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which is Winterstellgut. If you everwant to see a <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> paradise, you should visit <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m in Annaberg. It is both a <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> stud farm and a w<strong>on</strong>derful guesthouse withpaddocks as far as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eye can see, all built in traditi<strong>on</strong>al Austrianstyle from wood; Winterstellgut in Annaberg is a lovely day tripdestinati<strong>on</strong>. Now we would like to welcome <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Naomi to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring from Gut Hochreit in Saalfelden with her daughters Namira andNebula. You see <strong>on</strong>ly three mares here, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>tentimes it’s qualityra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than quantity that is most important. And here we have threevery lovely horses, all three <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whom are equally modern and up<strong>on</strong>closer examinati<strong>on</strong>, you can see that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> differences between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>families are really nuances. There is not actually a huge difference toobserve, and that is exactly what <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> commissi<strong>on</strong> has noticed in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>last few days; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a density <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality that has spread enormouslywide. Today, it is no l<strong>on</strong>ger <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a vast differencebetween <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse in first place and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse in fifth. It is no l<strong>on</strong>gerso that <strong>on</strong>e can know who <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> winner will be from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> outside; ithas become extremely difficult to determine and yesterday even <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>commissi<strong>on</strong> widened <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong> nominati<strong>on</strong>s. Manydifferent elements came into questi<strong>on</strong> to filter out <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bestand it was not an easy decisi<strong>on</strong>. This family, despite c<strong>on</strong>sisting <strong>on</strong>ly<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> three mares, was selected as sec<strong>on</strong>d best Produce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dam because<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare is herself so incredible, it is difficult to keep quality for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>next generati<strong>on</strong>s.I want to extend my gratitude to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding farm here, because<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are pro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that a lot can be accomplished in a fairly short timein terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding. There must not always be an enormous investmentin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> initial purchase. Granted, at some point <strong>on</strong>e must investsome m<strong>on</strong>ey, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <strong>on</strong>e needs patience and time; <strong>on</strong>e may need<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferdetwo generati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses, or perhaps three, before <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y achieve success. But when <strong>on</strong>e strives for greatness, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y will certainly achieveit. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s are a guarantee as far as that goes, and we want toremain so in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future.C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berchtold family, Anderss<strong>on</strong>-Thorné, and<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stud farm Wiesing with Johann Meier, and Ried Norbert, who Iapologise for nearly forgetting, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> course <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<strong>on</strong>derful yearlingAjumeirah should not be overlooked. As <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> youngest here in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring, she is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same type and model as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, though she wasoverlooked at first by many and undervalued at her purchase, todayher breeder has proven that he has a good eye and she is a superlativebreeding model from a family <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>s.As we said earlier, we have d<strong>on</strong>e an incredible amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> developingrecently, illustrated above all in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> permanent shift <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> dominancein <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bloodlines. We have a similar number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> breedings takingplace now in comparis<strong>on</strong> to 1985. 1985 marks <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> date <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my firstbig show as breeding director; at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internati<strong>on</strong>al show that year,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> A-line was absolutely dominant. If <strong>on</strong>e looks at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>breeding according to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lines, 2009 (<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foals born that year) isturning point, because for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first time <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> N-line was expandedlarger in Tyrol than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> A-line. There was <strong>on</strong>ly a difference <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fourmore foals, but it is a turning point n<strong>on</strong>e<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>less, as it was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> firsttime that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> A-line had been overtaken. The lines are better apporti<strong>on</strong>edwhen <strong>on</strong>e takes a closer look at 1985, a somewhat sadtruth is that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> M-line had nearly 250 breedings and was sec<strong>on</strong>din dominance to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> A-line, whereas last year this line had <strong>on</strong>ly 6breedings. It dropped from sec<strong>on</strong>d place to dead last, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> N-linerose from fifth place to first. So, very serious changes in bloodlinedominance. This is also pro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that breeders c<strong>on</strong>stantly change <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>irfocus to where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong> horses are, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> successful progeny, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>lines going in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> directi<strong>on</strong> we want to go.And that is what we wish to show here, with our largest presentati<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this show summary. We will now present (and we’ll need alittle more room to do so) 65 horses in a single Sire collecti<strong>on</strong>. 65horses are coming in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring now, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which 14 are stalli<strong>on</strong>s. This isa presentati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> likes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which is very rare; not to say it is entirelyunique, as it was Amadeus that has presented <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> largest family at<strong>on</strong>e time, but today this is a new Sire champi<strong>on</strong> collecti<strong>on</strong> to be175

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferde <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010presented as a symbol for all o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs. This is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Nordtirolwith his progeny that have been chosen as best in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world. I thinkit’s really something special when a stalli<strong>on</strong> with 65 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring ispresented in a world show; 65 horses that are good enough to be at<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> largest horse show in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world and for nearly all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m to bec<strong>on</strong>sidered class Ia.As I said, a stalli<strong>on</strong> with that many quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring is certainlysomething special. Altoge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were 25 entries that we saw. Thiscollecti<strong>on</strong> is an example for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs. There were many groups thatcould have been named <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> winner; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were many groups thatcould have been named reserve winner or third place. There werevery few groups who had no chance at going home with a ribb<strong>on</strong>.That is also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sign <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a good family <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mares and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breedability;<strong>on</strong>e realises that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is no end in sight when <strong>on</strong>e sees all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horsesin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> arena, all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> s<strong>on</strong>s and daughters <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first stalli<strong>on</strong> abovein <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exit. That <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y all bel<strong>on</strong>g to <strong>on</strong>e family is c<strong>on</strong>firmati<strong>on</strong> that<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> success <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed is genetically ensured with this purebred<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>. There is still no end in sight, still more countlessmares are coming in, not just from Tyrol but from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wholeworld. Am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m are, for example, Robert Glauser from Switzerlandwith Nordwest, Frank Smeltink with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Nordsee from<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ne<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rlands, D<strong>on</strong>ny Verkammen from Belgium with his stalli<strong>on</strong>Noreia, Jean Stockemer from Luxembourg with Newlook, Anderss<strong>on</strong>Thorné from Sweden with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Nachtmann, Neidhartfrom <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ne<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rlands, Gerhard Berger from M<strong>on</strong>aco with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mareRelie, Norb Schumacher from Luxembourg with his mare Pascal, and many more from various regi<strong>on</strong>s in Austria... So <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> progeny<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this stalli<strong>on</strong> are really spread all over Europe and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y will bearhis name out into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world and throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> world.Nomen est omen: North Tyrol w<strong>on</strong>’t just be c<strong>on</strong>sidered <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cradle176<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding and Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs in North Tyrol w<strong>on</strong>’t justbe <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world center <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s, but Nordtirol (in english NorthTyrol) is also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> name <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> who w<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> Champi<strong>on</strong>Get <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sire with 65 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring. I think that each <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 65 horses herecan feel a little like a world champi<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir own right, since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ybel<strong>on</strong>g to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> collecti<strong>on</strong> headed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>, as fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, that is herepresented to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> overall champi<strong>on</strong>. In total, Nordtirolhas 65 horses, two best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> class winners, four reserve winners forbest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> class, two third place winners, four fourth place winners and<strong>on</strong>ly 6 horses who were categorised in class 1b. That means that over90 percent were placed in class 1a, from which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were 8 horsesthat are going home with special awards. This presentati<strong>on</strong>, for me, is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show review.Seeing all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> progeny <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> and looking down <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> line at<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m; simply taking <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time to look at each individual animal andlook at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir type – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses are nearly all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same. One hears so<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten from laymen “how can you tell <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses apart, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y all look<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same,” because for a layman, all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y see are a chestnut horsestanding 1.47 m tall with a white mane. But here we are all experts, and as experts we look at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heads, examine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coat color, look at<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fundament: you will see that Nordtirol can be distinguished from<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs. One can <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>tentimes see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, even when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare’sline is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dominant influence, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are also dominant fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rsand <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se dominant fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs are also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our breed. Thanks to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeders who have brought <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir mares and stalli<strong>on</strong>sto take part in this huge collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Get <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sire. I believe thatthis is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful presentati<strong>on</strong>s and when we reallyreflect <strong>on</strong> this, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n we will realise that it is exactly this <strong>on</strong> which wecan count worldwide; namely, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dominant fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r animal with anoverall excellent progeny that has expanded throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world.

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010Very quickly I want to return to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bloodline allocati<strong>on</strong>s; I have describedfor you <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bloodlines as developed in Tyrol, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> picturechanges slightly when c<strong>on</strong>sidering <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole world. In terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> worldwide <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> N-line hasn’t seenmuch <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a change. 1988 had 313 stalli<strong>on</strong>s, 1995 was 312 and 2004was 306. Internati<strong>on</strong>ally, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> N-line is very c<strong>on</strong>stant. Areversed picture is seen with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> A-line where it trended upwardsinternati<strong>on</strong>ally: 1980 saw 133 A-line stalli<strong>on</strong>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n 304, 395 andtoday 465; nearly three times as many today while <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> N-line simplyremained <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same. Internati<strong>on</strong>ally, it should be our goal to preserveand sustain all seven bloodlines as much as possible with absolutepurebreeding. My deepest thanks to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exhibitors for this beautiful presentati<strong>on</strong>that is shown to us here. I haven’t menti<strong>on</strong>ed all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, butra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r just a few <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our internati<strong>on</strong>al guests, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> course our ownTyrolean breeders and owners are very important and dominant inthis collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> progeny. Am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Noweit fromLienz from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Winkler barn: thanks to him as well. Maier Hansiwas also here with ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r stalli<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring, and now is here withNewstyle in this Get <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sire. The stud farm Nauders is also representedby Siegfried Spöttl and his stalli<strong>on</strong> Nemo, al<strong>on</strong>g with Nihilistfrom Längenfeld stud farm with Reinhold Hausegger and Nikorafrom Reutte stud farm with Klaus Kurz. Our Tyroleans here are representativesfor all breeders who wish to propogate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> N-line fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rand show <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next generati<strong>on</strong> after Nordtirol, acknowledgmentfor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir efforts. That brings us to our next presentati<strong>on</strong>: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> youth stalli<strong>on</strong> champi<strong>on</strong>ship.We will now see all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> youth stalli<strong>on</strong> champi<strong>on</strong>s from<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following categories: yearlings, two year olds and three yearsolds. We have said that we aren’t just presenting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> winners butalso <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reserve winners, so in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> row you will see now winners andrunners-up; above all with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> three year olds this overall result isimportant. This here is our next generati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding stalli<strong>on</strong>s, ournext generati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> perhaps future champi<strong>on</strong>s and reserve winners atworld shows that must first prove <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves at breeding. Withoutproving that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best stalli<strong>on</strong>s for breeding, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se horses willnaturally not appear at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next show. They have to first undertakebreeding, and in breeding <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y must dem<strong>on</strong>strate, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y must show, that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y have earned a champi<strong>on</strong>ship positi<strong>on</strong> and show in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> futurewhat older stalli<strong>on</strong>s have shown and proven today. The developmentto become a breeding stalli<strong>on</strong> still waits to be seen.Right in fr<strong>on</strong>t is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> yearling stalli<strong>on</strong> champi<strong>on</strong>, Novemberschnee.I’ve thought a little that Novemberschnee in english translati<strong>on</strong> hisname would be Novembersnow is a symbol for this <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>Show</str<strong>on</strong>g>: when we began <strong>on</strong> Wednesday, it was <strong>on</strong>ly 7 degrees Celsiusand <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> May snow came down from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mountains to us. We had ahorrible start, but that <strong>on</strong>ly made today more beautiful. This stalli<strong>on</strong>is here from Michael Gurschler from Sölden – a ski destinati<strong>on</strong>,hence <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> name Novemberschnee – that may also act as a symbolicname for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeder. Names aren’t always arbitrary with breeders;sometimes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y have a meaning behind <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m. The November snowin Ötztal is very important since ski seas<strong>on</strong> begins in November, for which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y need snowfall in November. We need a stalli<strong>on</strong> likeNovemberschnee for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding and I believethat it is also very, very important that we have Novembernebel, a<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferdes<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Nordtirol that was recently seen as <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> thirdgenerati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong> that stands for world champi<strong>on</strong>quality throughout generati<strong>on</strong>s. Here we are already advanced fourgenerati<strong>on</strong>s: not just Nabucco as grandfa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n Nordtirol as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>dominator with his progeny, not Novembernebel, shown to be <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>sec<strong>on</strong>d best Get <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sire, but <strong>on</strong>e generati<strong>on</strong> fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r with Novemberschnee. One can already see with this yearling <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<strong>on</strong>derful effortlessnessthat this horse radiates, and yet also possesses enough body.As we’ve already said many times, a horse may not be too light; a<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> should not look like a greyhound, thin and under-nurtured,but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r in beautiful physical harm<strong>on</strong>y, with a lovely physicalbuild. This young stalli<strong>on</strong> is a very promising model and I’m happyto have had this yearling bred by Michael Gurschler <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sölden herewith us in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> yearling stalli<strong>on</strong> herd. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d positi<strong>on</strong>, born andbred here at Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>, is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> two year old stalli<strong>on</strong>s,a stalli<strong>on</strong> who may very well be <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Amadeus’ s<strong>on</strong>s.Amadeus unfortunately passed away two years ago, but though heis not himself with us today, we have his 78 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring and Amedi is<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his last generati<strong>on</strong>, his last progeny that we see here today. Bornfrom <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Ravella, his head is perhaps a bit too arabian, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his body, his neck, his l<strong>on</strong>g wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs are superb; see here <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>close c<strong>on</strong>firmati<strong>on</strong>, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>on</strong>g, muscular croup, here is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> appropriatemechanics <strong>on</strong>e should see in a two year old. All toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ra very charming horse and an appealing young stalli<strong>on</strong> with a lot <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>hope for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future. As a spectator, <strong>on</strong>e should also observe <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following: that is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> differencein expressi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sex between stalli<strong>on</strong> and mare! With <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young animals this is not yet as dominant as it must be later.Naturally <strong>on</strong>e should be able to discern a masculine expressi<strong>on</strong>, buta young <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> w<strong>on</strong>’t appear to be a full-blown typical177

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferde <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010model for a stalli<strong>on</strong> until he is at least four years old. Stalli<strong>on</strong>s whoare four or older develop <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir masculine appearance and a str<strong>on</strong>gerphysique due to horm<strong>on</strong>es. These young stalli<strong>on</strong>s currently in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring appear to be young ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than masculine and dominant like <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>older stalli<strong>on</strong>s we saw earlier, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y will develop more with eachpassing year.I would like to acknowledge <strong>on</strong>ce again in this c<strong>on</strong>text that I’mproud that we’re here in Tyrol and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se stalli<strong>on</strong>s both come from<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean Associati<strong>on</strong>, raised in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> old style, as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y were 100years ago or even 10,000 years ago – naturally and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir herd. Not kept separately or fed individually, no training, no preparati<strong>on</strong>,but kept within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd itself. Even during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se two stalli<strong>on</strong>swere kept behind in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stable with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir herd. We d<strong>on</strong>’t wantto make <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m feed individually in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> shows envir<strong>on</strong>ment, so insteadwe allow <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m to c<strong>on</strong>tinue <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir natural upbringing. We wantto leave <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd, discover who <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lead stalli<strong>on</strong> is, whichhorse asserts itself best against nature. A horse that cannot assert<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd is not a champi<strong>on</strong>.A loser within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd will never have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> strength to bring ournext generati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses where we want to go. Only stalli<strong>on</strong>s thatprevail within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd, stalli<strong>on</strong>s that develop bey<strong>on</strong>d that, that growand <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n flourish when trained for tasks – <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se can give us arespected progeny line.Let us not be distracted by a pretty face, let us not allow <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beauty<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nature to cloud our judgement; we must see through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> make upand select <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse that will become a champi<strong>on</strong> out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nature. Andthose are naturally raised young stalli<strong>on</strong>s.The last two are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong> and reserve champi<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> category<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> three year old stalli<strong>on</strong>s. Here we have true breeding stalli<strong>on</strong>s withsome more masculinity, though <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y still appear young, and stillhaven’t developed to where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y likely will in time. The horse that has been selected for champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong> as well asoverall youth champi<strong>on</strong> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Walzertraum, here seen asnumber 80.This stalli<strong>on</strong>, as I said yesterday, is simply phenomenal! At <strong>on</strong>e anda half years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age, this stalli<strong>on</strong> broke two <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his cervical vertebrae;he was lame and couldn’t stand <strong>on</strong> his own. But despite this setback,we didn’t give up <strong>on</strong> him. We brought <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse to a clinic in Munichand tried to heal him for two m<strong>on</strong>ths; it worked. There is a cervicalvertebra a hand’s width away from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spinal column, protrudingunder <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mane; <strong>on</strong>e can see a vertebra completely <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> side, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse doesn’t have any indicators <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lameness, doesn’t showany handicap, and has even g<strong>on</strong>e so far as to be selected champi<strong>on</strong>here. He is living pro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that <strong>on</strong>e can’t just give up, but must believein <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impossible. Often a little too much medicine is better thantoo little, but <strong>on</strong>ly when dealing with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> health <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse and notunfair competiti<strong>on</strong>. This belief paid <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Walzertraum, bred by Hermann Gruber from Kolsassberg. Best wishes to HermannGruber for your best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> class stalli<strong>on</strong>! You were probably notthrilled in February during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> inspecti<strong>on</strong>s, when this stalli<strong>on</strong>placed third, but today or yesterday he was named champi<strong>on</strong>,not just <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his category but <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all youth stalli<strong>on</strong>s. One realises thatin a short time, small changes are possible. But that is also a goodsign that not just a single ideal stalli<strong>on</strong> exists, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r several. TheTyrolean inspecti<strong>on</strong> winner placed third, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> inspecti<strong>on</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d place178winner remained in sec<strong>on</strong>d place, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> inspecti<strong>on</strong> third place winnerbecame <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>; an internal shift within just a few m<strong>on</strong>ths.I believe that this shows successful breeding, not yielding singleproducts but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r several different ideal models. In sec<strong>on</strong>d place is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> youth reserve winner Stilt<strong>on</strong>. This stalli<strong>on</strong>was bred by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pfausler family from Roppen and he stands at studin Imst at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> stati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Engelbert Posch; he just may beNabucco’s successor. His progeny must first be proven. But when<strong>on</strong>e also examines <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare families, who are counted am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>world’s best, when <strong>on</strong>e looks at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> charm, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> facility <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his ancestry,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <strong>on</strong>e realises that this stalli<strong>on</strong> has a successful future inbreeding, even if or better because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> he was named sec<strong>on</strong>d placewinner here. Abba and Davos, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se two young stalli<strong>on</strong>champi<strong>on</strong>s, are also success stories.Thank you for presenting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se young stalli<strong>on</strong>s to us; I now invite<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m to exit <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring. It is also interesting, ladies and gentlemen, when <strong>on</strong>e sees that in 1970 (forty years ago), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> was in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> public meaning <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <strong>on</strong>e horse breed in Austria. But thiswas probably just public percepti<strong>on</strong> and not actual fact, since ourstatistics show that in 1970 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were 3000 <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s in Austriaand 5000 Noriker horses. Today we are about equal in strength <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>numbers; in 1990 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were more <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s than Noriker horses.Only <strong>on</strong>e breed, that has been <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> str<strong>on</strong>gest breed in Austria for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>last 50 years, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed that was thought to be threatened by extincti<strong>on</strong>,and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> smaller breed – this is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world horse breed.Sometimes attitudes, opini<strong>on</strong>s or percepti<strong>on</strong>s aren’t exactly correct, especially when gouverment support occur as a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m.And with that we come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next category: stalli<strong>on</strong>s.Here <strong>on</strong>e can see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> full force <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>ship horses – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present, but naturally also with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se older stalli<strong>on</strong>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> past.We have here in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring all four categories <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>s and

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010reserve winners. Let’s begin with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> oldest and work our way downto <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> youngest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m. The oldest, and I will come back to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>magain later, are definitely not and by no means <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> worst, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>irideal quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> past is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> basis for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir champi<strong>on</strong>ship today. The first champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong>, Abendstern, followed by Nordtirol. Twostalli<strong>on</strong>s whose story has already been told at this show: Abendstern, because he has <strong>on</strong>ce again been selected as overall world champi<strong>on</strong>stalli<strong>on</strong>, and Nordtirol, because he is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sire <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world as presented here. These older stalli<strong>on</strong>s have proven here that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are still forces to bereck<strong>on</strong>ed with, and as I said earlier with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>s, this pers<strong>on</strong>allygives me hope. Success in breeding doesn’t end after a few years, but c<strong>on</strong>tinues l<strong>on</strong>g-term.Abendstern has been at every single world show since his birth in1995 as a three m<strong>on</strong>th old colt with his mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Dorlis in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> showand not <strong>on</strong>ly that year an individual horse. Simply to be at everyworld show is a success, but every single show since his first <strong>on</strong>e,Abendstern has also w<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> h<strong>on</strong>or <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> overall champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong> –this is really something very special. Since 1995 he has c<strong>on</strong>sistentlybeen <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful stalli<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world and he has also claimedmultiple European titles and all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> awards in Tyrolean stalli<strong>on</strong>shows for overall champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong>.In o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r words, to date, this horse has yet to compete at a world showand not win; this is truly something unique. That is definitely something special, and when <strong>on</strong>e looks at himcloser – he has right now for those <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> us observing him in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> middle<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring his mane <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wr<strong>on</strong>g side, unfortunately – but for those<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> you in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> grandstands, you can see why this dream stalli<strong>on</strong> hasbeen a champi<strong>on</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last 15 years as nothing blocks <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> view <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> neck and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole horse. This harm<strong>on</strong>y, this w<strong>on</strong>derfully harm<strong>on</strong>ious c<strong>on</strong>formati<strong>on</strong>: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re isno corner, no edge. This horse shows when <strong>on</strong>e starts at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eye, moves over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beautiful arabian head, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> always-attentive ear, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>beautiful neckline and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> well-defined and dominant wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs thatstretches far into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> back. Then <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beautiful, close upper line and<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> gently dipping back that appears to be <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> height <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> comfort <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>feredby any horse. Then this beautiful croup, something which alwaysis critiqued in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding; this horse has it, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> perfectl<strong>on</strong>g, muscular croup that we’re looking for.And <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entire c<strong>on</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> is an upwards-forwards structure; whenyou look at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are noticeably higher than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> croup. In many horses, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> croup and wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs are <strong>on</strong> par with <strong>on</strong>e ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r,but here <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs are higher than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> croup because this horse isa model <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an upwards c<strong>on</strong>formati<strong>on</strong>. Then <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beautifully angledhindquarters (which are naturally a part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> close line c<strong>on</strong>formati<strong>on</strong>),with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> straight fr<strong>on</strong>t limb placement and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>reby extending<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> harm<strong>on</strong>y downwards: this is what makes this horse so special.Apart from that, his progeny have w<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> overall youth mare champi<strong>on</strong>shipand third place in Get <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sire, indicating that his progenyhave also had success. He is also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> star in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> riding inthis show. Beauty, outstanding progeny, aptitude for sportiness, andabove all charm, character and temperament – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se bel<strong>on</strong>g to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>world champi<strong>on</strong> described above.I have already described Nordtirol for you; he is naturally also a fabulousmodel: light, wiry, he is now perhaps more an extreme sport<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferdeathlete. He looks like a triathlete: trained, wiry, not an extra ounce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>weight – that is Nordtirol, a proper extreme sport star. The next age category is led by Novembernebel, a s<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nordtirol. Ican still remember it clearly – when this foal was born in 2001 hereat Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Rijana, who was herself Europeanchampi<strong>on</strong> and class champi<strong>on</strong> at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world show <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> previous year,every<strong>on</strong>e stood gaping in fr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> new foal. He was probably<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful foal that we had seen here at Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs upuntil that point. He was over a meter tall with excellent c<strong>on</strong>formati<strong>on</strong>:he was light, he was beautiful, and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> euphoria <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that firstlook that every breeder feels, something was overlooked – two whitefeet. Two weeks later came <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first shock: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first white foot wasdiscovered, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n a few days later <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d <strong>on</strong>e was found aswell. Every<strong>on</strong>e said, “Oh no, a <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> with two white feet! Themost beautiful foal and now suddenly two white feet – no <strong>on</strong>e wantsthat. No breeder will allow him to stand at stud... what should we dowith our beautiful stalli<strong>on</strong> foal now?”Then came <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> candidacy selecti<strong>on</strong> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> commissi<strong>on</strong> debated,I can still imagine it as though it were happening today, andasked <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves, “What do we do now? The most beautiful foal, but with two white feet. If it were <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e... but two white feet, no,that will never work.”The foal was not selected as stalli<strong>on</strong> candidate, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stubbornTyrolean breeding director thought, we need a good riding geldinganyway, let’s add him to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd. That was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly horse that wasever added to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herd as a young stalli<strong>on</strong> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> idea that he wouldbe a riding horse <strong>on</strong>ly someday, and today he is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> class, and reserve winner with his progeny. Breeders, and I, have acceptedhis two white legs, and for that I thank <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeders. A horse has nocolours – that doesn’t fully apply for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s, but we must let alittle slide if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse is o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rwise a perfect model and type for ourbreeding goals. He has developed into a w<strong>on</strong>derful jumping horse, as you saw in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>show. He is harnessed in a single-horse carriage, jumps, quadrilles, and is a dynamic all-around horse, very sporty, enormous size andgood dominant genes in breeding. If you have a mare that is slightlytoo small, breed her with Novembernebel and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> proper size for<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next generati<strong>on</strong> is almost guaranteed. He has shown us time andtime again that his progeny tend to grow to about 1.50 m tall; wed<strong>on</strong>’t want <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed to become much taller than that. 1.55 m is actually<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> height limit what we are going to establish very so<strong>on</strong>.I want to say here clearly and with certainty: <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s may notstand higher than 1.55 m, this definitely should be our height limit.Behind him is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reserve winner, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Wolfgang. Wolfgangis a stalli<strong>on</strong> with a moving face and comes from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stud farm Weer, which by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> way is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly stati<strong>on</strong> owned by a local associati<strong>on</strong>.The associati<strong>on</strong>, chaired by Romed Posch, is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly local Tyroleanassociati<strong>on</strong> with its own stud farm. It isn’t easy to find some<strong>on</strong>e whois hardworking and shows commitment that can care for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>s<strong>on</strong> a daily basis who doesn’t have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir own farm already, but is c<strong>on</strong>tentto work for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stud farm, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> associati<strong>on</strong> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>breeders in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong>. The past wasn’t always easy. I must say that<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Wolfgang was always a bit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a problem child. One <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful stalli<strong>on</strong>s that we have and not in perfect positi<strong>on</strong>,but as fortune would have it <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kirchmair family moved to Weer179

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferde <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010and since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n our stalli<strong>on</strong> Wolfgang has become a success story. And when I say he is a success story, I mean that this stalli<strong>on</strong> is pro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>that demeanor, feeding, care and above all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> aura <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tentmentthat a stalli<strong>on</strong> has, is what makes him what he is: a beautiful stalli<strong>on</strong>.Without <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> proper preparati<strong>on</strong>, without affecti<strong>on</strong> and daily work, itis rare that you will produce a champi<strong>on</strong>.Wolfgang has come into his own nicely and has a w<strong>on</strong>derful group<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring; many, many mares from far away are lining up for him, also because he can prove that he is successful despite being somewhatup and down with breeding. But he is really a stalli<strong>on</strong> that haspushed through to success; perhaps he hasn’t always had luck withbreeding with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> right mares, but when he is bred to a mare witha respectively high level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality, he has passed quality al<strong>on</strong>g tohis progeny. One champi<strong>on</strong>, two reserve champi<strong>on</strong>s, two third places and a fourthplace: from his progeny that are presented here at this world show inhis group <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring.Behind <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Stainz, ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r stalli<strong>on</strong> that fills me withmuch joy.I can still remember when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ST-line was still in its infancy with<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Stürmer during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Midas and a little before, soat some point in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 70s; this stalli<strong>on</strong> was actually <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first modernstalli<strong>on</strong>. At that time he was much more modern than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>Afghan. He was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first stalli<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> enormous size, very well-definedwi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs and a light neckline. He was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first stalli<strong>on</strong> that was lightand fine, but this stalli<strong>on</strong> unfortunately died from pois<strong>on</strong>ing <strong>on</strong>lya few years after he began to stand at stud. Two stalli<strong>on</strong>s came inc<strong>on</strong>tact with pois<strong>on</strong> simultaneously; was it an accident, somethingin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> food, but at any rate this stalli<strong>on</strong> was taken from breeding fartoo early.Once again we come back to Ötztal. The former chairman from Ötztal,ÖR Erich Scheiber will be happy to see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> name Ötztal come upso <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten; not just because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was almost <strong>on</strong>ly a single family (<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Scheiber family) who was in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> associati<strong>on</strong> 20 years ago, whereastoday <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are over a hundred members, but also because this regi<strong>on</strong>has become <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most successful breeding areas. This ishow Stainz came to be from Ötztal, al<strong>on</strong>g with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Nihilist,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reserve winner, who is from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> stati<strong>on</strong> Längenfeld byReinhold Hausegger. C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to this horse as well, bred byAnnemarie Rauch in Kelchsau, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most famous breeders in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country. He is also kept at an exemplary stud farm which holds sport activitiesall year round. Riding in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> summertime, and you should alsocome to Längenfeld for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Winter <strong>on</strong> January 6th so that youcan experience <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s in winter sport activities. From Skijoring, single or pairs, sleighs, expert riding and horse racing,<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Winter features everything that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> can doin wintertime. Right <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stud farm, you can see <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>swith <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir winter coats, and you will see that a <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> with fullwinter coat is just as beautiful pulling a sleigh as he is here todayin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> arena. But now we are four generati<strong>on</strong>s down <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> line and we have Stainzas overall reserve champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong> standing in fr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> us. Stainzis perhaps not an <strong>on</strong>ly sporty stalli<strong>on</strong>, but he is a very harm<strong>on</strong>ioushorse; very similar in his model and aura to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Abendstern:a very similar closeness, harm<strong>on</strong>y, close lines and lots <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> movement, not just sportiness, but also charm and expressi<strong>on</strong>. He is also sporty, however, because we’ve seen him in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show: if you had <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opportunityto see him in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> arena <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>on</strong>g reins, or observed him witha sulky, you will know that Leiter August from Niederthai has bred astalli<strong>on</strong> with all-around quality that promises much for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future.180Now we return to Annemarie Rauch whom we just spoke <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>, becauseshe is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeder <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next stalli<strong>on</strong>, Alph<strong>on</strong>so, winner am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>four and five year old stalli<strong>on</strong>s. Also bred by Annemarie Rauch, heis an <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Abendstern. Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r and s<strong>on</strong> are here toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring as champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong>s and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> s<strong>on</strong> dem<strong>on</strong>strates a very similarmodel to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. The young stalli<strong>on</strong> perhaps doesn’t have asstr<strong>on</strong>g a stalli<strong>on</strong> expressi<strong>on</strong> yet, but he may develop in this directi<strong>on</strong>and due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extreme feeding necessary at Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> in winter, hisground color may not be as bright as usual. But you can probablyimagine: stalli<strong>on</strong>s that stand at stud must service 60 to 70 mares, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mares are in foal, give birth and are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n in foal again. At <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sametime all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses must do show training for 2–3 hours per day, training in various disciplines, and must be fed accordingly. Lots<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> protein and pellets make <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses a little darker, which is probablywhat happened with Alph<strong>on</strong>so which likely cost him a pointor two from his chances at a higher placement. But overall he is agreat stalli<strong>on</strong>, frequently used in breeding with over 70 covers, fine, light, elegant, and his first year <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> producing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring has been very, very promising. C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to breeder Annemarie Rauch and<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> course <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrol Associati<strong>on</strong> as owner <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong>s.

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010And last but not least, from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> B-line, which is a great joy for meas breeding director, to see an example from such a rare bloodlinemaking it to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> final ring: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Bergdorf. This stalli<strong>on</strong>, born to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Delina here at Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>, is a symbolfor what breeders can accomplish when supported by breeding associati<strong>on</strong>s:support <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> rare bloodlines by going to stalli<strong>on</strong>s that maynot be exceedingly popular at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> moment but who possess goodgenes and crossing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m with quality mares to ensure that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rarebloodlines gain popularity. Bergdorf (mountain village in english):a beautiful name for a beautiful stalli<strong>on</strong> and I wish <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mares who were bred to him this seas<strong>on</strong> and I’ve heard <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re weremany <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> very best success with breeding and we expectmany beautiful foals next year al<strong>on</strong>g with a rebound in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> B-line.While <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>s exit <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring, I want to return to something thatwe’ve already touched <strong>on</strong>, namely <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> desired size. Over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lastseveral decades this was a dominant <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>me in breeding debates, andnow we’ve finally reached <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ultimate size that we want. In 1897,Major Graf Huyn wrote that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> should be between 150and 160 cm tall, so before 1900 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> was about 145 cm to155 cm large, since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> height was taken in tape measurement ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stick. In 1963 at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internati<strong>on</strong>al expansi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average height as notated in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stud bookwas 134.8 cm. In 1972, ten years later, it was 135.4 cm and in 1985at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my positi<strong>on</strong> as breeding director, it was 138.3cm. Twenty-five years ago <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> was <strong>on</strong> average about 2centimeters smaller than today’s minimum measurement and morethan 15 centimeters smaller than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>breed’s definiti<strong>on</strong>. As we reach an average <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 147 cm in 2010, weare actually at exactly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same spot that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed began back whenit was first established in 1900. This is a part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our success and anachievement <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our l<strong>on</strong>g-term goals, that via purebreedingwe’ve returned to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sizes that we hold as ideal. The next presentati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our captivating <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Show</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2010are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young mare champi<strong>on</strong>s. Since we’ve just been discussingheight measurements, perhaps I should tell you more about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sizes<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> yearlings. Yearlings measure <strong>on</strong> average 133.5 cm in March, which has remained fairly c<strong>on</strong>stant. In 2007, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average was 133.5cm, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same in 2008, 10 mm more in 2009 and this year <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> averagewas 133.7 cm. Points also remain approximately <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same and fairlyc<strong>on</strong>stant each year as well (73.5). In 2007, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 200 yearlings reached73.88 points <strong>on</strong> average, in 2008 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average was 73.71 points, 2009was 73.83 and this year was 73.82 points; remaining within a 0.15point range over four years as an average taken from thousands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>judged yearlings, means c<strong>on</strong>sistently each year. Breeders d<strong>on</strong>’t haveto worry that year to year will be more difficult or easy, or that lastyear was very easy or next year nearly impossible; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y can dependeach year <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exact same appraisal and maintenance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> judging. This year <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> appraisals were under extreme c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>preselecti<strong>on</strong>s occurred simultaneously; in <strong>on</strong>e day 60 yearlings in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> morning and 90 in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> afterno<strong>on</strong> (a total <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 150) were appraised, measured, branded, described, photographed, and given a chip.Even this is possible and still al<strong>on</strong>gside a c<strong>on</strong>stant estimati<strong>on</strong> wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>qual points. Now joining us are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> yearlings, two year olds and three year olds, beginning with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> yearlings. The Jordan family with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferdeyearling Helianne dem<strong>on</strong>strates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exemplary Newstyle progenywith lots <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> charm and glamour, with a w<strong>on</strong>derful light forehand.Look at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> line <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this young filly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fr<strong>on</strong>t and back legs, howdry <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fundament is not just in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>, but throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring: <strong>on</strong>e sees <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> joint b<strong>on</strong>es and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tend<strong>on</strong>s and a shadow between<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m. Not an ounce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> overhang, not <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> slightest indicator<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a heavy fundament, but dry, light and fine: exactly what we’rehoping for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future. C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Jordan family for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir champi<strong>on</strong> yearling. But also look at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d place filly, Frijana from Rabl Sebastianfrom Wörgl in Tyrol, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Novembernebel. She is alsoa beautiful model: see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lightness here as well, perhaps lacking amore expressi<strong>on</strong>-filled face but that may still develop in this yearling.Thank God, that in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> presentati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young horses, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>irdevelopment is not yet realised; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are still young. Frijana is a verymodern, glamorous, fine horse. Then we come to my t<strong>on</strong>gue-twister <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last three days, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> youngmare Nobilie. I think I’ve said <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> name Nobile about 20 times over<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last three days, though I will be sure to make note <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this namefor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future since we will almost certainly see and hear more froma young reserve winner <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this quality. Nobilie has a very brightfuture ahead <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her; she hails from Gut Hochreit and is an <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Aghai, a line seen very seldom at this world show because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>stalli<strong>on</strong> Aghai was not entered with his progeny, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r has beenseen <strong>on</strong>ly through this mare he bred. I d<strong>on</strong>’t think <strong>on</strong>e could possiblywant for a better forehand, neck, shoulder and wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs line. The fundament is also fine: dry and elegant. She also dem<strong>on</strong>stratesmuch promise and hope that she c<strong>on</strong>tinues to develop in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> way that<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> judges anticipate. A two year old, still developing, is exactly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ideal champi<strong>on</strong> horse for me pers<strong>on</strong>ally, because all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possibilitiesin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world remain open. The proporti<strong>on</strong>s do not yet line up toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r quite right – namely, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rounding and harm<strong>on</strong>y have to come toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> femininity hasto still develop – but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is still time for that and this horse willstill improve. I am willing to bet <strong>on</strong> this, because this horse is notyet fully developed and shows much potential. C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s toGut Hochreit. Then behind <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m from Dietmar Schneider hailing from Höchstin Vorarlberg is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young mare Mandela, who we nearly forgot orrated incorrectly according to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> list for today’s presentati<strong>on</strong>, whois also an <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Novembernebel. C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to him.I’m fairly certain that when he purchased this foal, he didn’t expectthis run <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> success; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foal wasn’t even allowed to be entered for<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs aucti<strong>on</strong> because she was such a late born filly in Maywhich excuses her a little. Too under-developed, she was a smallfoal with slight visual imperfecti<strong>on</strong>s which will be less noticeablein <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future. To protect <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foal, that did not look properly thattime as it could and to be sold <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore at a low price <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foal wasnot allowed in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> aucti<strong>on</strong>. But <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> filly has made her way and isnow reserve winner and for that I wish to sincerely c<strong>on</strong>gratulateDietmar Schneider, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most motivated breeders in Vorarlberg. We are happy to see Salzburg and Vorarlberg represented as<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first and sec<strong>on</strong>d place winners in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring, representing twobreeding regi<strong>on</strong>s that have l<strong>on</strong>g bel<strong>on</strong>ged to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean associati<strong>on</strong>.C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to both breeders.181

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferde <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010Then comes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> three year old mare class champi<strong>on</strong> A<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>na, bel<strong>on</strong>gingto <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berchtold family from Innsbruck, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> capital <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrol. She is ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Abendstern, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> overall champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong>who will come back again later. In additi<strong>on</strong> to winning <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> three yearold champi<strong>on</strong>ship, A<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>na has also been named overall champi<strong>on</strong>youth mare. We will come back to her later as well; this mare wasbred by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berchtold family <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves and I want to bring yourattenti<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> incredible femininity, charm and harm<strong>on</strong>y that thisyoung mare already shows and also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> enormous drive from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>hindquarters. A few more words <strong>on</strong> Akropolis, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reserve winner. If we had known in 2007 what a disaster we would be experiencingwith Greece, I d<strong>on</strong>’t know if we would have chosen <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> names <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>A<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>na and Akropolis. At any rate, A<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>na and Akropolis live toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same barn with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berchtold family – <strong>on</strong>e an <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Abendstern, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nordtirol. Two world champi<strong>on</strong>s are<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se two horses. Akropolis was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most expensivefilly <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sale, and while <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> highest price doesn’t always meaneverything, this young mare has maintained her peak positi<strong>on</strong> overher three years. Though she’s <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reserve winner here, she was alreadyclass winner at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> European show and was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> winner thisyear at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stood book registrati<strong>on</strong> in Kematen. Now <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> two threeyear olds, A<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>na and Akropolis have traded places. A<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>na, a beautifulhorse, a very good forehand, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same charm, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eye, fine fundament;<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is nothing negative to say.We come now to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> high point – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last two presentati<strong>on</strong>s.When I say “high point,” this is not an indicator that we care lessabout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>s, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than we had 100 stalli<strong>on</strong>s and 600mares. With six times as many, it’s <strong>on</strong>ly natural that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> competiti<strong>on</strong>am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mares is very high, because to select <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most perfecthorses from 600 applicants is very strenuous work that as you saw,was completed by a jury <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 15 members from 10 nati<strong>on</strong>s, a judgingpanel that represented Europe and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world. From <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> uSA, Great Britain, Denmark, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ne<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rlands, Luxembourg,Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and all over Europe <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>judges came here. Judges who have trained toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Federati<strong>on</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last 15 years, who have all completeda training course, who judge collectively and have also developedpr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>iciency tests and breed standards collectively. The educati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a judge is an exemplar and very, very important for<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed as a whole. Only when we can judge collectively, whenwe select <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same horses as models, when we have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same breedstandards and ideals in mind, <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n can <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed be successfull<strong>on</strong>g-term. Now let’s take a look at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>s selected by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>judges. There are a hundred o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs horses that also earned <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rightto stand here in this final presentati<strong>on</strong>, but for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sake <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> brevity wewill <strong>on</strong>ly be presenting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> class winners. With <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> older horses, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groups have horses <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> different age. Thatis something special, being named <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best horse from an age group,<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> more years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> bith, to be selected from thousands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses bir<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>din <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same year. And that begins with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ten year olds, followedby <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nine, eight, seven, six, five and four year olds who have givenbirth. And <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mares who haven’t had foals this year, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>maiden mares in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring. This is a little smaller class, but to be fair<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se mares cannot be compared with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mares that have foals by182<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir sides. Mares with newborns by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir sides look somewhat different:in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>ths between February and May, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y give birth to<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir foal and keep it by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir side, nursing up to 35 liters <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> milka day. The mare practically produce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> milk as amilking cow; in 6 m<strong>on</strong>ths a newborn foal is already living independently. So it is not fair to compare nursing mares with foals at<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir side to mares who have been focusing <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir training for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>entire year. Therefore, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a separati<strong>on</strong> between maiden maresand broodmares. There are many familiar faces am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> broodmares, including <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mare Astra, already described multiple times, here named champi<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> class and winner until <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring. Beautiful in her ownright with a successful progeny, behind whom is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> class champi<strong>on</strong>mare Delina, also from Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs and who we have describedalready. She is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong> Bergdorf, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stalli<strong>on</strong>swe’ve described during this show commentary already; she isalso a very successful mare with a past: she was overall champi<strong>on</strong>mare <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Europe and two-time champi<strong>on</strong> at previous world shows. She is also, incidentally, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> full sister <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> world champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong>Abendstern.Behind her is Relie, ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r mare we have seen already in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Produce<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dam competiti<strong>on</strong>, owned by Gerhard Berger from M<strong>on</strong>aco.Then <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Soraia-Sissy, and naturally I also have toc<strong>on</strong>gratulate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Hauserwirt, as Johann Wagner from Münster isknown to every<strong>on</strong>e as owner <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> hotel Hauserwirt. Soraia-Sissy isalso a horse with a history. The breeder was disappointed very <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten,and frequently didn’t reach <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heights that he had imagined. But, asI’ve already menti<strong>on</strong>ed, you should never give up. I have never givenup and nei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r has Johann Wagner. Today he has finally succeededfor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first time to come out <strong>on</strong> top with this mare, at ten years<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age; c<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to Hauserwirt and his really very beautifulAlpenstein mare.Behind her is Gut Hochreit’s mare Namira – different horses, not<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same animals, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same breeding farm, both just with similarnames. Namira is a daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Wegbereiter and was also bred byGut Hochreit – a best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> class champi<strong>on</strong> from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir own breeding.See here again <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sporty type: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> length in this horse, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> necklength, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> enormously l<strong>on</strong>g wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fine fundament and also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>drive from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hindquarters that certainly makes this horse a special

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010mare and must also affect her riding abilities and bring her success.Behind her is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Daurela, a Winterstein mare who was alreadychampi<strong>on</strong>. She was three years old at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last world show and wasnamed overall youth mare champi<strong>on</strong>; now five years later this marefrom <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> is <strong>on</strong>ce more best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> class. Her dominant qualitieshave remained c<strong>on</strong>stant over many years.Behind <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next category, seven year old broodmares with<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Decolores. I have already spoken <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her; she was born from<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same cross (Davos and Straden) as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> three year old stalli<strong>on</strong>reserve winner Stilt<strong>on</strong>. Here is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same breeding from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pfauslerfamily from Roppen: very similar in type and model, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same eye,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same harm<strong>on</strong>y, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same closeness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> line. Behind her is Melenawho has also already had much success in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> European show, whereI believe she w<strong>on</strong>. She bel<strong>on</strong>gs to Victoria and Helena Rauch fromSchwendau im Zillertal. Here too is a horse with a history, as somany in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring are; c<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to Neuner family. Then is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Alexandria, who we’ve already seen and will see<strong>on</strong>ce more, from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berchtold family: champi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> five yearolds.Behind her is Desina from Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>, a Novembernebel mare whois <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last world champi<strong>on</strong> mare who has unfortunatelypassed <strong>on</strong>. We needed to put her down after an accident, buttoday <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Dematteo is represented here by her daughter. Thedaughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world champi<strong>on</strong> mare and almost just as successfulin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next generati<strong>on</strong> as her mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. I am also pers<strong>on</strong>ally very proudthat my s<strong>on</strong> Matthäus is presenting his horse completely <strong>on</strong> his ownat 11 years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age. With that we move <strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> maiden mares, beginning with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>champi<strong>on</strong> Rimalda from Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> who was previously overallworld champi<strong>on</strong> mare, and has w<strong>on</strong> every class she has entered excludingher first world show. In that show in 1990 she was enteredas a yearling in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> youth class, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nine in her class. She wasplaced seventh that day, third to last, and from third to last she roseto world champi<strong>on</strong> mare. Behind her is M<strong>on</strong>alisa-Marietta from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> PferdeReinprecht family from Schwarzenberg, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bregenzerwald <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>Vorarlberg. A few words about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Reinprecht family. I d<strong>on</strong>’t thinkyou can find more fantastic, enthusiastic, or true <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breedersthan Hadwig and Othmar Reinprecht. Truly enthusiastic breedersthat push enthusiasm to its very limits, but I think <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se are exactly<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> kind <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeders we need; breeders that publicly support ourorganisati<strong>on</strong>s. When <strong>on</strong>e is al<strong>on</strong>e, <strong>on</strong>e remains al<strong>on</strong>e; it is <strong>on</strong>ly in anorganisati<strong>on</strong> that <strong>on</strong>e finds a family, and for that I want to extend mysincere thanks for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Reinprecht family. The mare, an Amadeus <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring, is also a very lovely model whorepresents our desired breed standards in modernity and type. Then comes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare Nataschka from Klaus Adamer from Breitenbach,a breeder who has survived many setbacks; <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten judged well, but never completely happy, but today <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scales have balanced andhe can be proud <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his success. Klaus Adamer shows here a Stradenmare in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring, bred himself, and he can be very proud <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> thislovely model – very modern, harm<strong>on</strong>ious, very light – c<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>sto Breitenbach and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Angerberg associati<strong>on</strong>!With that we come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last presentati<strong>on</strong> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> high point <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show commentary – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> presentati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> overall world champi<strong>on</strong>s.“There are three kinds <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lies: lies, damned lies and statistics”, is anold expressi<strong>on</strong> that pokes fun at statistics being lies.Every<strong>on</strong>e always believes that he is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best, he is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> biggest, heis <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most famous, he is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful, he is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most importantassociati<strong>on</strong> or breed. But <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are also commendably objectivenumbers.I want to share a few <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se objective numbers with you today, since all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m can be proven and verified right away. All <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> us use Google when we want to find something <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internet. If I want to find out who Norbert Rier is, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n I google him andimmediately discover <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kastelru<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Spatzen. When I search for<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s, I can find <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m right away in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internet when I searchin Google. And when I argue that we are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most popular breed<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse in Austria, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n I can also go and search Google for this.Type in “Noriker” and you will receive 75,700 hits, or listings where<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> name or term “Noriker” is menti<strong>on</strong>ed – approximately 75,000.Then type in: “Warmblut” [warmblood] and you will get 202,000.Then type: “Lipizzaner” <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Austrian breed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horse and you willfind 378,000 hits. Noriker, Warmbloods and Lipizzaners toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ryield a total <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 655,700 hits. Now enter <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> and you will see1,330,000 hits – you can’t ask for more pro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>most important, famous and well-known breed! The term <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> appears throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internet twice as <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>tenas <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> names <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all three o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Austrian horse breeds combined. Ibelieve that is sufficient pro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>.And if we want to add ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r few terms, like Icelandic, for example, even when Icelandic is associated with o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r things (like volcanicash), we find it appears just as <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten: 265,000 hits. There are 7 milli<strong>on</strong> hits for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> word “horse,” so <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> hasabout 20% in comparis<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> term horse. So internati<strong>on</strong>ally renowned,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> has risen to such a world horse breed; I wantto thank every<strong>on</strong>e from around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world who have made this possible. All <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> media who are resp<strong>on</strong>sible for this, all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeders, all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> you that have made <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> name <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> global term in183

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferde <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010horse breeding that it is today. And to those who think that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> costs too much m<strong>on</strong>ey, I want to say that we couldc<strong>on</strong>vince you over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last years and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last few days that everypenny <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> investment capital that was put into Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> was merited, that we have a world center here <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> likes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which doesn’texist anywhere else. That we’ve built a horse breeding facility thatis a gem for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> public hand, a gem for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> public as well that hasearned your support. An a few more hits here as well. The stud farm Piber has 16,000 hits,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding center Stadl Paura 21,000 and Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 33,000.Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore, has nearly as many hits as Piber andStadl Paura combined. When <strong>on</strong>e totals <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sp<strong>on</strong>sorship received, itaccounts for about ten percent. So we needn’t apologise for a singlecent; believe me, every cent is perfectly invested here and appliedexactly where it ought to be, in advertisements for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> asTyrol’s breed and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeders <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean associati<strong>on</strong>, andnot in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pockets <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficial or operative – that I can guaranteeyou. With that, let’s get back to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses – we now have in fr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> us<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beautiful, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2010.We begin with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young colts that we first saw, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y should bementi<strong>on</strong>ed <strong>on</strong>ce again: Walzertraum and Stilt<strong>on</strong>.These two were already in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring <strong>on</strong>ce with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young champi<strong>on</strong>sand Walzertraum, as stated earlier, represents toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r with Wolfgang<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> W-line.Similarly, Stilt<strong>on</strong> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hope for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ST-line toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rwith proven stalli<strong>on</strong>s like Straden and Standschütz, but also with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>stalli<strong>on</strong> Stainz, a member <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ST-line who is <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> way to futuresuccesses.Abendstern, and this <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> course I am happy to repeat now, is a phenomen<strong>on</strong>:a stalli<strong>on</strong> with fifteen years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>stant placement atworld champi<strong>on</strong> level is truly unique. The jury did not have aneasy time making a selecti<strong>on</strong>, I want to say that this was not aneasy decisi<strong>on</strong> to reach. Does <strong>on</strong>e move <strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young <strong>on</strong>es orremain with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> old stalli<strong>on</strong>; <strong>on</strong>e hears people <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> outside say“we probably haven’t managed to breed anything better in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lastten years,” or <strong>on</strong>e can say in all h<strong>on</strong>esty, that beauty remains beautifuleven with age.And exactly this decisi<strong>on</strong> is what <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> jury came to and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y reachedit with a large majority, making Abendstern <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong> thirdtime running. And this naturally brings me much joy, since all threecomp<strong>on</strong>ents are found in this stalli<strong>on</strong>, as was said earlier: successfulbreeding, beauty and usefulness. From this perspective, Abendsternis <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> worthy 2010 world champi<strong>on</strong>. Best wishes <strong>on</strong>ce againto Abendstern and to all those who were resp<strong>on</strong>sible in part for hissuccess.Stainz is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reserve winner, who I have also already described; bornin Ötztal, standing stud here at Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> and also used in riding anddriving, since beautiful stalli<strong>on</strong>s must also be presented. Beautifulstalli<strong>on</strong>s and mares must be presented to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> public all year round.Five days <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> world show are w<strong>on</strong>derful, five days <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> show are a hitfor all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> us, but we need to present our horses every day <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year;we need <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m to be friendly with children and prove this <strong>on</strong> a dailybasis. Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs has 150 riding members, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whom 120 arechildren, and is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> largest riding club in Tyrol.184120 children, mostly young girls, join us year round to ride and aresupported by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean associati<strong>on</strong>. And that is also a part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>breeding <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>s: not just breeding, not just propagating, but runninga breeding operati<strong>on</strong> not just for quantity, not just for m<strong>on</strong>ey,but so that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed is ensured. This is what we workfor day after day and what we will c<strong>on</strong>tinue to work for in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future.Stainz is just such an example <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an advertisement: he has beenreared so that he will accomplish in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future much <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> what Abendsternhas accomplished. He will be ridden dressage and prepared;how far al<strong>on</strong>g he will go is something we will <strong>on</strong>ly be able to tell in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future. But c<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong> stalli<strong>on</strong>s and withthat we come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last presentati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed showand world show 2010.Before we come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mares, ladies and gentlemen, let me firstthank you. Thanks, not just joy, must have a place in my show comments;I want extend thanks now to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> endless list that I have triedto shorten as much as possible.Above all, I want to thank Chairman Hans Strobl, chairman <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Tyrolean Associati<strong>on</strong> and al<strong>on</strong>g with him, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>Breeders Associati<strong>on</strong> for organizing this show as a window for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>world. Thank you very, very much for also supporting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breedingdirector <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean Associati<strong>on</strong>, who occasi<strong>on</strong>ally goes his ownway without asking questi<strong>on</strong>s or having much discussi<strong>on</strong>. There isseldom time during our l<strong>on</strong>g days for discussi<strong>on</strong> but this collaborativeunderstanding, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> support <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> associati<strong>on</strong> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> belief<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> board that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> small town <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ebbs, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> small Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> associati<strong>on</strong> with its fifteen employees can fully producea world show, this belief has made us all str<strong>on</strong>ger. Thank you very, very much, my dear Hans Strobl, for your pers<strong>on</strong>al commitmentthroughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole year and above all for your trust in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> directi<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> associati<strong>on</strong>. Without internati<strong>on</strong>al judges, this showcould obviously not exist, so I want to thank all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our friends, andI believe that we’ve all become friends by now, for your supportand your efforts which go uncompensated and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten unrecognizedthroughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year. Whenever some<strong>on</strong>e is criticized at events likethis, it is always <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> judges. So it is not always a joy to be a judgebecause <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> critique stops with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m. For this I want to thank you foryour efforts and your tireless fight for a unified breed standard. I alsowant to thank <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> employees here at Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>, especially RobertMair, Anni Schwaiger at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fice, Reini Gappmeier, Carina Koidl

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010and Magdalena Auer, Sabrina Stöckl, Gerhard Blassnigg, CarolineBöck, for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entire <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fice team, Annemarie Wendlinger and all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r employees, especially <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> new employees. It may have escaped some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> you that in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last m<strong>on</strong>th <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>team has been reduced by half <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its numbers. A m<strong>on</strong>th before<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world show we had many new employees at orientati<strong>on</strong>; I wish<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> very best to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> those who have moved <strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir future endeavors. And Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> will certainly replenish <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir ranks with employees.Special thanks especially to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeders in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> TyroleanAssociati<strong>on</strong>, most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whom are unfortunately not here but who havehelped for weeks with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> set up and break down <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this show andwithout whom we certainly would not have been able to organize<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Show</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2010. It rained for four weeks and webuilt <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entire site in steady rains, and still managed to finish it <strong>on</strong>schedule. They will also help break it down. They worked through<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> night and cared for all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses; as assistants <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y heard <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> occasi<strong>on</strong>alharsh word from me and for that I h<strong>on</strong>estly apologise, notbecause I was incorrect, not because it was undeserved, but becauseit may have come out a little more harshly that I meant for it to aftera l<strong>on</strong>g and hectic day. My very deepest thanks to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> organizersand helpers who are also resp<strong>on</strong>sible for this success. This show wasa combined effort <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrolean breeders – thank you so much.Next I would like to thank <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nati<strong>on</strong>al and internati<strong>on</strong>al presenters– without internati<strong>on</strong>al stars, without <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entire world taking part inour show and bringing toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r over 200 horses from throughoutEurope and even <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> uSA, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Show</str<strong>on</strong>g> wouldn’t bepossible. The number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> visitors in attendance speaks for itself and Iwould also like to thank all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our internati<strong>on</strong>al spectators for joiningus. Thanks to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fans who have come here and created this greatatmosphere – thanks so much. The kitchen staff has earned a thank you as well, headed by Ernestoand <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> St. Johann College <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tourism; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young ladies cheered uswith <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir smiles <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> driest day as well as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wettest and rainiest. Thanks to St. Johann College <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tourism for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir help. Thanks as well to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> team <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> doctors, both Drs. Pötsch that caredfor us here and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Red Cross, who where thankfully not <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten utilizedin our show. Thank you to our team <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> doctors.Naturally I would also like to thank our sp<strong>on</strong>sors, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> state <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyroland <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> republic <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Austria – without <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir support, this show couldnot have taken place. Thank goodness we have very, very generousprivate sp<strong>on</strong>sors who I will pers<strong>on</strong>ally thank ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than publicly, but<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y have my thanks and all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our gratitude. My thanks as well to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> community, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fire and rescue services andsecurity, who stood behind us during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stormy days and helped usbuild and break down in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> middle <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> night, evacuating horsesand moving <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m elsewhere – thank you so very much.Special thanks to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> federal armed forces as well for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir presentati<strong>on</strong>and above all for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir extensive assistance not just during Wednesday’srain catastrophe, but throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show. Thank you to MajorHager and your pack animal center Hochfilzen. And also to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> communitywho helped us during our parking space emergency; thanks toMayor Ritzer for his c<strong>on</strong>stant assistance over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last few days.A special thanks to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> media as well. Without televisi<strong>on</strong> reports, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>many newspaper articles, photography taken and shown throughout<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world, without <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se media this success would have been much<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferdesmaller: a short 5 day success ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than a l<strong>on</strong>g-term achievementfor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reputati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Also our deepest thanks to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>media representatives, especially Astrid Stadler and Thomas Ziegler, our media representatives who have assisted us over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lastweeks and m<strong>on</strong>ths and taken care to show <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rightlight. Thanks as well to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> photographers here in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring, and naturallyto Westreicher Producti<strong>on</strong>s who give us <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se beautiful pictures<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> screen – thanks very much. Before I finish my thank-yous, I promise I’m almost d<strong>on</strong>e, ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rfew critical words: You saw at first when we had problems with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>media. Not all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> media made problems for us, just unfair commentsfrom a small c<strong>on</strong>tingent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> unimportant media from Tyrol thatwanted to glean some political influence at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> expense <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breedersand <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir success. We want to prevent this and have no part in it.You may be thinking that somebody is missing, and I wanted to save<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m until <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> very last: I want to thank my family from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bottom<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my heart. You have seen that Fohlenh<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> bel<strong>on</strong>gs to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> TyroleanAssociati<strong>on</strong>, that it bel<strong>on</strong>gs to all Tyrolean breeders, but also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Schweisgut family is an important part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> it.And to my wife, who for m<strong>on</strong>ths hasn’t just tinkered with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show, but has been in full service: thank you, my dear M<strong>on</strong>i, for all your efforts. You have impressed all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> us, thank you. And thanks too to myyoungest part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our family, my 11 year old s<strong>on</strong> who already has 5show points, was leading and preparing horses, was lifting hay balesand much more: thank you as well, my dear Matthäus. Some<strong>on</strong>e elsemissing from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> employee list <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> names is Hans-Lothar Holas, whodoesn’t seem like an employee to me but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r a part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my family. He was also hard at work with his family, Magdalena with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>evening shows and Maximilian with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> music at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show. WithoutHans-Lothar who was always in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> background, this show wouldn’thave been possible, since some<strong>on</strong>e must always keep working behind<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scenes. My deepest thanks for this, Hans-Lothar.And last but not least thank you to my parents, who made <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> start<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my career here in Ebbs possible. To my fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r who brought <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> to today’s internati<strong>on</strong>al standard, who pushed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>to where it is today; I want to thank him for his efforts, withoutwho <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re wouldn’t even be a <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Show</str<strong>on</strong>g> today. And alsomy mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> background, who always made sure that familysupport was essential for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> working pers<strong>on</strong>, both <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whom haveunfortunately passed <strong>on</strong>. Family – including <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> family –receives my biggest thank you today, and that includes all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> us.Thank you to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spectators who came to this show and to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>breeders. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> family has proven that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are alive andwell – and not just alive, but a star <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrol. And before <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeders suffer from a heat stroke, since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y neverthought <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y’d be in here this l<strong>on</strong>g, we arrive at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end and review<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses for <strong>on</strong>e last time.We haven’t yet spoken about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare champi<strong>on</strong>s.And here we have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> champi<strong>on</strong> youth mares from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berchtoldfamily from Innsbruck-Hötting in Tyrol and Hansi Berchtold leadinghis horse himself, whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r he should or not.His A<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>na, from Abendstern and Aspirina, bred by himself, raisedlike a member <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> family – a little spoiled, but that’s <strong>on</strong>ly right.Dear Hansi, I c<strong>on</strong>gratulate you <strong>on</strong> a beautiful, great horse and a greatsuccess.185

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pferde <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> weltausstellung 2010Charm, femininity, elegance and ease – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are those that are envious<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> you, but hopefully you will mute <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir criticisms when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ysee you here in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring, since you really have shown <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautifulyoung <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> mare in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world seen during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last fewdays. Thank you very much. The youth reserve winning mare we have already seen here, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mare Nobilie from Gut Hochreit, who presented herself very, verywell and c<strong>on</strong>stantly appeared in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring. I believe that <strong>on</strong>e can’t buygood breeding, and you can’t acquire it – <strong>on</strong>e must have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> enthusiasm,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ardor, a decent amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> luck and a lot <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> persistence. One breeds, breeds and breeds with little success. I always say that<strong>on</strong>e must persevere, <strong>on</strong>e must think l<strong>on</strong>g-term, <strong>on</strong>e can’t think inyears or decades but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r in generati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses. Gut Hochreithad success so quickly, I think ten years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding and now very, very successful with a beautiful, elegant young horse. C<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s.With that, we come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> overall champi<strong>on</strong>s.The most beautiful mares, and now perhaps let’s stand all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mareshere in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> center <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring in a line. The stalli<strong>on</strong>s can be led out, orperhaps just brought to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> back to allow for ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r photo opportunityand <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chance to photograph all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ring.Every<strong>on</strong>e who wants to take pictures is welcome to come into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end and take a picture <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horses; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world champi<strong>on</strong>sare here for you to see, since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> photos are nicer when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horsesare posed. And I would also like to describe <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> overall champi<strong>on</strong>swhile <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are posing.Alexandria, overall world champi<strong>on</strong> mare <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>Show</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2010 – a fantastic five year old mare, large-framed, beautifulcolor, lovely feminine expressi<strong>on</strong>, very, very dry fundament. Justlook at her legs. You will see that <strong>on</strong>e can observe <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> b<strong>on</strong>e, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>tend<strong>on</strong> behind without <strong>on</strong>e hair too many – not <strong>on</strong>e b<strong>on</strong>e that is toothick or wide, no fluids in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> joints, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r dry, fine, exacting andgood for high-impact limbs.A sincere thank you and c<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berchtold family, owners <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> two overall winners – Christmas and Easter in <strong>on</strong>eweekend. The Berchtold family, extremely successful this year: bestwishes to you.And finally I come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> overall world reserve champi<strong>on</strong> mareDesina. Matthäus, your horse that you’ve dreamed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>; your teacherwill be having nightmares so<strong>on</strong> because she can’t handle hearing<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> word <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g> anymore. Matthäus incorporates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>into every assignment, picture and crafts project, showing just howmuch love and soul he has for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breed. He was more excited aboutthis show than we all were, and now he stands in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> final ring – thismakes me very happy. The reserve win goes to a Novembernebelmare born to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last overall world champi<strong>on</strong> mare Dematteo – topchic,top-modern, perhaps not with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most beautiful head but o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rwisea lovely horse. Dear Matthäus, I c<strong>on</strong>gratulate you with mywhole heart, and t<strong>on</strong>ight you may dance with Bettina Berchtold to<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> s<strong>on</strong>g “Dem Land <strong>Tirol</strong> die Treue”, which means “remain faithfulto <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrol”, a modern an<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m.“Remain faithful to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tyrol”, those are my closing words. I wantto thank all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spectators, all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stakeholders, all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> organizers,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> helpers and I want to wish you all a beautiful, sunny summer’sday – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2010, and rest this world show at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> feet <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>Emperor as this is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> name <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mountains behind us.The Emperor in Tyrol has a new name: <str<strong>on</strong>g>Haflinger</str<strong>on</strong>g>.
