In the coming year, our college will continue to promote this conceptin all its teaching, research, and service programs. Our new strategic plan emphasizes the College’s role in eradicatingand/or controlling important animal and zoonotic infectious diseases. The College’s investigators are making significant progress in controllingturkey respiratory pathogens, such as avian pneumovirus, and havemade eradication of the Porcine Reproductive and RespiratorySyndrome a major priority. Faculty are sequencing the genes of criticalhuman and animal pathogens and defining the genetic determinants ofthe body’s immune response. In addition to infectious disease control, clinical scientists continue todevelop useful animal models of human diseases to improve diagnosisand treatment of cancer, arthritis, renal disease, and diabetes mellitus. Our new Center for Animal Health and Food Safety will coordinate facultyefforts to enhance the safety of our food supply. The Center willtake the lead in risk communication, development of certification programsfor food animal products, and establishment of degree and certificateprograms in food safety.■ A New Future forOld Anatomyback coverIn the Veterinary Teaching Hospitals, a new computer system and managementstructure are two examples of our ongoing efforts to improvehospital operations. Clinicians, technicians, and staff continue to provideoutstanding care and service to more than 30,000 animals and theirowners each year.In this annual report edition of Profiles, we are proud to highlight themany ways the College of Veterinary Medicine improves both animal andhuman health.Thank you for your past support. Disease Eradication—NoLonger an Elusive GoalThanks to modern farm management techniques and sophisticatedveterinary diagnostics, solutions are in sight for many diseasesafflicting the swine industry. They don’t raise pigs the way theyused to. Today’s biosecuritymeasures place pigs in tightlycontrolled environments. This isolationkeeps diseases and infections fromspreading and can make total eradicationof certain swinediseases possible. To go from possibilityto reality, the College ofV eterinaryMedicine hasformed the SwineDisease EradicationCenter.“We intend todevelop and validatepracticalstrategies andtechniques tohelp pork producerseliminate diseases. Eradicatingdisease is probably the single biggestway we can have an impact on the cost ofFILE PHOTO“The ability to eradicate even onedisease would have a profoundimpact on our industry,” says GalenJohnson, Grandview Hogs, who representsthe Minnesota Pork Producerson the Center’s advisory board.production, animal welfare, and swineemployee job satisfaction,” says CarlosPijoan, center director.“The expertise and technology housedwithin the College makes it an obviousplace to start this effort,” he adds. TheCollege has the largest faculty group inthe world devoted to swine health andour internationally-recognized molecularbiology faculty focus much of their workon swine and swine pathogens. The VeterinaryDiagnostic Labperforms morethan 15,000porcine tests eachyear, giving facultyready accessto samples andinformation onthe actual diseasesaffectingMinnesota swine.“By having thestate’s official veterinarydiagnosticlab operatedby the University, we can quickly identifynew threats to swine health and deviseresearch strategies to eliminate thosethreats,” says Pijoan.Center faculty will work closely withcolleagues at other universities and withindustry. Pijoan is creating an IndustryAdvisory Board composed of representativesfrom swine-related companies, including swine genetic, pharmaceutical, and production companies, andpork producers. It will work closely withthe Minnesota Pork ProducersAssociation by providing individual, onfarmeradication strategies. For moreinformation, visit the web site atwww.cvm.umn.edu/sdec.Research FarmProvides Real-Life LaboratoryHow can you determine the distancea virus can spread in the air? That knowledge is critical if you’regoing to separate sick pigs fromhealthy ones.To find out, College of VeterinaryMedicine researchers are leasingan isolated farm near Appleton,Minn. Ten miles from neighboringfarms, researchers can safely evaluateeradication techniques formany diseases in a controlled environmentresembling actual farmoperations. After reviewing actual farm-tofarmtransmission patterns of aswine virus called PRRS,researchers were confident tenmiles was a sufficient safeguard todetermine how far the PRRS viruscould be transmitted via air. They found that healthy pigshoused in the same barn as diseasedpigs contracted the diseasewithin 72 hours but healthy pigskept in a trailer just three feetaway did not get sick – nor did thehealthy pigs housed 100 feetaway.3

Clinical Investigations BenefitPeople—and Their Best FriendsMany diseases afflict both people and their pets.Veterinary research is perfecting therapies for both.Imagine being able to grow new kneejoint cartilage rather than having toundergo major surgery to replace afailed joint. You and your pet may beable to one day, thanks to a collaborationbetween the College of VeterinaryMedicine and the University’s MedicalSchool.College faculty members Cathy Carlsonand Timothy O’Brien are working withRobert LaPrade, associate professor oforthopaedic surgery in the MedicalSchool, on a technique for growing cartilagefrom stem cells derived from bonemarrow from adult dogs. The cartilagewould then be placed into the dog’s kneejoints to replace worn or damaged tissue. The idea is to perfect the technique indogs and then transfer it to humans.“Clinically, the technique has potentialfor use in either animals or humans sinceanimals develop many of the same diseasesof joints as humans ,” says Carlson. This project is just one of several beingcoordinated by the College’s ClinicalInvestigation Center (CIC) that stands tobenefit both people and pets. Many ofthese projects, CICdirector BonnieSweeney says, beginwith a medicalresearcher looking fora veterinarian to helpwith animal testing.“When we start totalk, we figure outthings that benefitboth humans andanimals,” she says.“The light bulbs goon and we come upwith ideas that willhave practical benefitsfor both.”Other CIC-coordinated projects thathold promise for both humans and animalsinclude a study of a painkiller fordogs that may find application in humanjoint surgery; efforts to use a medicationthat boosts human organ transplant success, eye treatment for horses; andresearch on laser therapy for caninetumors that may eventually be used inpeople with cancer.“This kind of ‘win-win’ collaboration iswhat the CIC is all about,” saysSweeney. “Because the Center serves asa focal point for applied research in theCollege, we can help develop proposalsinto coordinated efforts that benefithumans and animals alike.”For more information seewww1.umn.edu/vcic or call612-624-2752.FILE PHOTOCurrent TrialsFILE PHOTOClinical trials currently beingcoordinated by the VeterinaryClinical Investigation Centerinclude studies of:• the effectiveness of prednisone-cyclosporintherapy forhemolytic anemia in dogs• the effect of diet modificationson seizure control in dogs• the use of diet and drug therapyin dogs and cats with renaldisease and hypertension• use of photodynamic therapyto treat recurrent cancers indogs• determinants of hair regrowthin dogs after clipping• use of a cyclosporine-releasingimplant to treat “moonblindness”(uveitis) in horses• use of an antidepressant medicationto treat cats that losetheir hair• effectiveness of distempervirus to treat dogs withrelapsed lymphoma4

ReachingBeyond CampusFrom community meetings on anthrax in northwestern Minnesota to bi-monthlyseminars for veterinarians in Rochester, the College of Veterinary Medicineoutreach programs provide knowledge when and where it’s needed most. What’s the latest advice for preventinglameness or colic in horses? How do you care for a diabeticdog? What role do veterinarians play incombating bioterrorism? No matter how much a person knows aboutanimals, there’s always another question. For 34 years, the College’s VeterinaryOutreach department has been making surethere’s an answer, too.Veterinary Outreach works with theMinnesota Extension Service and other publicand private partners to share the expertiseof the University with veterinary professionals, pet owners, agricultural producers, industry specialists, and others from aroundMinnesota, the nation —and even the world.Recent offerings included a laser surgeryworkshop for veterinarians and technicians,a school for turkey producers and flock managers, and a presentation in northwesternMinnesota on BSE (mad cow disease),anthrax, and foot and mouth disease.Feedback is consistently positive: “You provideda very interesting mix of topics.”“Very timely discussions.” “I enjoyed thebiosecurity topics with the science to backit.” “I will use this to help my customers –which helps me.” “This is my first timeattending and I loved it. It was worth thevisit.”Some 3,000 individuals participate in educationalopportunities sponsored byVeterinary Outreach each year. Last year, nearly 600 of them were from outside theU.S. But with outreach programs, the ultimateimpact is far greater than the individualattendees.“When we connect with veterinarians, theyconnect with their clients,” says DirectorJan Swanson, “so our education programsreally have a multiplier affect.”UpcomingOutreachProgramsDecember 3–5 — TurkeySchool I: Health of TurkeysMather Lecture SeriesNovember–April,First ThursdayRochester Outreach SeriesJanuary 10 – NovelTherapies for Anemia-Oxyglobin and ChineseHerbsMarch 14 – DentistryMay 9 – Reading YourRadiographsFor more information call612-624-3434The Allen D. Each fall veterinarians, academicfaculty, pork producers, and other interestedpersons from around the world cometogether to share information and to gathernew insights to take back to colleagues, clients, and others. This year’s conferenceincluded sessions on disease diagnostics, food safety and biosecurity, insurance andinformation management, as well as a diseaseeradication symposium offered in bothEnglish and Spanish.5

FacultyO & ARichard Isaacson, Chair,Department of PathobiologyRichard Isaacson joined the faculty July 1, 2001 to serveas chair of the Department of PathoBiology. A professorof microbiology and immunology, he joins the Collegefrom the University of Illinois.O:A:Why were you interested in chairing adepartment? One of my favorite aspects of research is pullingtogether and working with the research team. Forme, the greatest reward in academia is helping others getexcited about research. In this job, I have the opportunityto mentor junior and senior faculty members in additionto students. It also gives me an opportunity to provideleadership and strategic development for the departmentand researchers. Working as a team, we will be ableto accomplish great things.O:A:Why Minnesota? There are only 27 veterinary colleges in the U.S.and this was one of the few dream jobs available. The department is full of young, vibrant, well respectedfaculty who are known nationally and internationallyfor their work. I can’t say that about many other veterinarycolleges. In addition, this is a good fit for my research interests, especially with the new Center for Animal Health andFood Safety. And the genetic techniques and facilitiesavailable to me will really facilitate my research.O:A:What is your personal area of research?I study bacterial infectious disease, trying to understandhow pathogens cause disease at the molecularand genetic level. For example, one of the problems wehave with bacteria such as salmonella is that the animalsshow no clinical signs of the bacteria. The animals appearperfectly healthy at slaughter and then the bacteria get inthe food chain. We’re trying to understand the specificmechanism on how salmonella infects animals yet doesn’tmake them sick.O:A:You are not trained as a veterinarian. Why didyou choose to do your research in veterinarymedicine?I like conducting research with the natural host, theactual diseased animals, where you can test and verifywhat you’ve done right away. Human medicalresearch is more ambiguous because you have to test yourtheory in lab animals first and the results in people maynot be the same. In veterinary medicine, what we findapplies directly to the disease.Richard Isaacson, Chair,Department of PathoBiology6

Research NewsNEWS NEWS NEWEffectiveness of Commercial DisinfectantsNorwalk and Norwalk-like viruses cause as much as 40 percent of all food borneillnesses in the U.S. Commercial disinfectants are relied upon to decontaminatesurfaces and equipment at food service establishments. Studies on the effectivenessof these disinfectants on Norwalk and Norwalk-like viruses had not beendone because they could not be grown in cell culture systems. College ofVeterinary Medicine researchers and colleagues at the School of Public Healthrecently conducted tests using a feline virus, which is similar to the humanNorwalk virus. Seven commercial disinfectants for food-contact surfaces andthree sanitizers for fruits and vegetables were tested against the feline calicivirus(FCV). None of the disinfectants were effective when used at the manufacturer’srecommended concentration for 10 minutes, suggesting that FCV and perhapsthe human Norwalk virus are very resistant to commercial disinfectants. This research appeared in the Journal of Food Protection.APV Vaccine Minimizes Losses in TurkeysResearchers developed and tested the efficacy of a live, attenuated vaccineagainst avian pneumovirus (APV). This virus causes a disease that has costMinnesota turkey growers more than $45 million in production losses in thelast three years. When compared with unvaccinated flocks on the same farmfrom the previous year, the medication cost, total number of birds not acceptedat the slaughterhouse, and mortality rates attributed to APV prior toslaughter were significantly lower in vaccinated flocks. The research was publishedin Avian Diseases.Enzyme Deficiency Afflicts Quarter Horse FoalsCollege of Veterinary Medicine equine researchers, led by Stephanie Valberg, have identified a new genetic disease that is killing quarter horse foals by twomonths of age. Scientists examined seven related foals that died by sevenweeks of age and obtained tissue samples from their mothers, half and full siblingsto study the structure of glycogen and the two enzymes involved in itssynthesis. The foals in the study were missing one of the enzymes necessaryto form glycogen, the glycogen branching enzyme (GBE). Without sufficientglucose for energy metabolism, the newborn foals failed to thrive. It is vital tomaintain glucose levels in newborns. The research, which is scheduled toappear in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, suggests that GBE deficiencymay be a common cause of neonatal mortality in Quarter Horses thatis obscured by the variety of clinical signs that resemble other equine neonataldiseases.AlleviatingAnimal Pain“In the past ten years, pain has becomea recognizable and treatable conditionfor animals,” says Elaine Robinson.Recently, Robinson and graduate student,Mona Al-Gizawiy, began lookingat post-operative pain in cats. They areconducting a study which compares anew injectable, non-steroid, anti-inflammatorydrug with a commonly usedanalgesic. Up to 60 cats will beobserved for 48 hours after an electivespaying operation. Researchers willevaluate signs of discomfort, eating anddrinking behavior, posture, and physicalitems such as heart rate, breathing, and blood composition.“You don’t need to speak to show pain;animals show pain in many ways,” saysRobison, who admits it has taken a lotof time to devise a scoring and gradingsystem for animal pain.Robinson is particularly interested inpain research involving cats. “Catsseem to show pain in different waysthan dogs. While dogs might vocalize, and even be more aggressive, cats tendto become withdrawn and quiet. Weare just starting to interpret thesebehaviors as a cat being in pain.”Elaine Robinson and Mona Al-Gizawiy13

One Hundred Years and Counting:A New Futurefor Old Anatomy?Old Anatomy, theivy-coveredbrick two-storybuilding on the corner ofGortner and Fitch, hashad generations of studentsstudying veterinarymedicine cross itsthreshold. Built in 1901to serve the growinginterest in veterinary medicine, it is now the oldest buildingon the St. Paul campus. When the College of Veterinary Medicine was establishedin 1947, the building became the home of the new college.“It WAS the college when we were freshmen. That was it,”says Glen Nelson (CVM ’51), professor emeritus and memberof the college’s first graduating class. Since then, OldAnatomy has been home to the Veterinary Medical Library, the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, the Raptor Center, and its current tenant, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. In 1997, Old Anatomy was put on a list of buildings proposedfor decommissioning, but a recently released assessmentshows it to be structurally repairable as well as architecturallyand historically significant.Old Anatomy is likely the last remaining structure on campusdesigned by well-known architect Charles R. Aldrich, according to Jim Litsheim, the University architect whoheaded the assessment. Constructed of yellow Chaska brickwith a unique circular room, the building offers a valuableperspective on the materials and design ideas of the times. Ifit is not demolished, Litsheim expects it to make theNational Register of Historic Places.“It’s a little gem architecturally,” he says. “We’re suggestingit be used as office classroom space, particularly for administrativeoffices for the College of Veterinary Medicine.”College facilities manager, Ed Kosciolek, says he hears a lotof support for the proposal.“It would be great for the College to go back to its originalhome. Think of the impression such a stately and historicplace would make on visitors,” he says.Kosciolek says economics argues for the rehabilitation, too.New construction would cost 20 percent more thanrevamping Old Anatomy. Relocating administrative officeswould free up space for laboratories, classrooms, or additionalfaculty offices.College of Veterinary MedicineUniversity of Minnesota1365 Gortner AvenueSt. Paul, Minnesota 55108www.cvm.umn.eduReturn Service Requested
