He wanted a major that would givehim good job prospects. He didn’t know what college wouldbe like, so he wanted <strong>to</strong> avoid committing <strong>to</strong> four or moreyears of school until he had tested the waters.Then he found KVCC, and its highly-regarded health careprograms.“I chose nursing because I wanted <strong>to</strong> do somethingmeaningful with my life,” Begin said. “There’san increasingly high demand for nurses <strong>to</strong>day, andalthough it’s a very difficult field, I’m happy <strong>to</strong> knowI’ll be doing a service by improving our current healthdilemma.”He applied for and has been accepted in<strong>to</strong> that challengingprogram for the fall of 2009. She had threedaughters when she began studying nursing, so sheunderstands the challenges of balancing school andfamily responsibilities.Karen began working as a nurse in 1986 and herdesire <strong>to</strong> teach nursing led her <strong>to</strong> <strong>Kennebec</strong> <strong>Valley</strong><strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>, where the nursingprogram is recognized throughoutNew England as <strong>to</strong>p-notch.In 2006 Karen began teachingKVCC nursing students in a clinicalsetting at a local hospital.Her respect for the facultyand the nursing team at the<strong>College</strong> led her <strong>to</strong> seek a full-timeteaching post, and in the fall of2007 she got her wish.

He gotin<strong>to</strong> teaching mathematics after a college professor <strong>to</strong>ldhim he was better at explaining math concepts than shewas, and he has never looked back.Jared found KVCC a great fit for him and a great placefor students, with many advantages not offered at largerinstitutions.“Here at KVCC our math classes are small, whichallows the instruc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> interact and get <strong>to</strong> knoweach student,” Harvey said.“The students are morelikely <strong>to</strong> be engaged in class, because each coursewe offer is directly related <strong>to</strong> a program—studentsactually use the math that is being taught, whetherthey are in nursing or applied electronics.”Jared also teaches classes at KVCC’s Buker facility inAugusta, and online, and said the flexibility this givesstudents who do not live within easy commuting distanceof Fairfield is one of the <strong>College</strong>’s growing strengths.“I have a few students who leave work <strong>to</strong> come <strong>to</strong> myclass at Buker, and then return <strong>to</strong> work when class isover,” Harvey said.“Students find online classes veryconvenient because they can fit the class in<strong>to</strong> theireveryday life without the hassle of traveling. Thissemester I even have a student who lives in Canadaenrolled in my online class! There are no boundarieswith online learning.”
