He wanted a major that would givehim good job prospects. He didn’t know what college wouldbe like, so he wanted to avoid committing to four or moreyears of school until he had tested the waters.Then he found KVCC, and its highly-regarded health careprograms.“I chose nursing because I wanted to do somethingmeaningful with my life,” Begin said. “There’san increasingly high demand for nurses today, andalthough it’s a very difficult field, I’m happy to knowI’ll be doing a service by improving our current healthdilemma.”He applied for and has been accepted into that challengingprogram for the fall of 2009. She had threedaughters when she began studying nursing, so sheunderstands the challenges of balancing school andfamily responsibilities.Karen began working as a nurse in 1986 and herdesire to teach nursing led her to Kennebec ValleyCommunity College, where the nursingprogram is recognized throughoutNew England as top-notch.In 2006 Karen began teachingKVCC nursing students in a clinicalsetting at a local hospital.Her respect for the facultyand the nursing team at theCollege led her to seek a full-timeteaching post, and in the fall of2007 she got her wish.

He gotinto teaching mathematics after a college professor toldhim he was better at explaining math concepts than shewas, and he has never looked back.Jared found KVCC a great fit for him and a great placefor students, with many advantages not offered at largerinstitutions.“Here at KVCC our math classes are small, whichallows the instructors to interact and get to knoweach student,” Harvey said.“The students are morelikely to be engaged in class, because each coursewe offer is directly related to a program—studentsactually use the math that is being taught, whetherthey are in nursing or applied electronics.”Jared also teaches classes at KVCC’s Buker facility inAugusta, and online, and said the flexibility this givesstudents who do not live within easy commuting distanceof Fairfield is one of the College’s growing strengths.“I have a few students who leave work to come to myclass at Buker, and then return to work when class isover,” Harvey said.“Students find online classes veryconvenient because they can fit the class into theireveryday life without the hassle of traveling. Thissemester I even have a student who lives in Canadaenrolled in my online class! There are no boundarieswith online learning.”

Liberal Studies and EducationNot sure what career you want to pursue? Thinking of earning afour-year degree? Many KVCC students find our liberal studiesprogram an excellent way to explore career options while earningcredits that can apply toward specific degree programs.Many KVCC students begin college without knowing exactlywhat they want, but find our liberal studies program anexcellent way to explore their options while earning creditsthat can apply toward other programs here and at four-yearcolleges and universities across Maine and beyond. Othersknow exactly what they want, but take advantage of our lowtuition to earn credits they can later apply at more expensiveschools. Our two year Associate in Arts degree in LiberalStudies meets the needs of both, and is an excellent choiceof major for many students.Always wanted to work with young children? Our programsin Early Childhood Education and Speech LanguagePathology give you the skills to work in these growing fieldsand the confidence to be successful. We’re excited about anew partnership with the University of Maine at Farmingtonbeginning in the fall of 2009. UMF instructors will beteaching advanced Early Childhood courses right on ourcampus, assuring those seeking four-year degrees of a clearpath to their goals.
