Vagn on HWAM
Fire has always fascinated people, for when we see the light of the fi re and hear the
crackle of the fl ames, we feel at home and in touch with our innermost nature. It is a
simple pleasure which satisfi es our basic human instincts in a quite fundamental way.
This fascination is refl ected in all wood-burning stoves from HWAM. Our stoves are
the result of more than 30 years’ experience, and their stylish, quiet exteriors embrace
a burning passion for design, innovation, quality, and attention to detail.
For we insist on setting new standards for user friendliness, design, fi nish, and performance.
Simply because we always want the best – an aim which requires a signifi cant
commitment!
Warmest regards,
Design and Concept
HWAM represents pure design, uncomplicated and without superfluous ornamentation.
The Scandinavian tradition – cultivated to the level of the sublime. A design to surprise
– with and without the flames.
But HWAM means much more than just heat from an unusually beautiful piece of furniture.
It also means sophisticated wood-burning stoves featuring ground-breaking technology and
superior finish down to the very last detail.
The stoves from HWAM are designed by leading Scandinavian architects and designers,
complemented by our expertise, experience, and patented technologies to form a perfect
harmony between design and functionality.

Automagic
Brilliant solutions are often simple little details which nevertheless make a huge difference in
our everyday lives. And HWAM’s patented automatic system is no exception to this rule. It
consists of a small spring which automatically regulates the supply of air to the combustion. A
strikingly simple, yet ingeniously brilliant function which offers numerous automagic benefits
– both for you and for the environment.
Simple, convenient operation
Automagic because you do not have to worry about manually regulating the air supply. The
automatic system optimises the combustion for you, completely...well, automatically. All you
need to do is to light up the stove and enjoy the flames and the heat to the full. And when
you add more firewood, the system will automatically readjust the stove to achieve the optimum
combustion. Couldn’t be easier.
Easier cleaning
Automagic because the optimised consumption results in cleaner smoke, reducing the amount
of ashes and soot. This translates into easier cleaning – of both the chimney and the stove itself.
In addition, the combustion chamber is designed with a unique window rinsing system which
serves to prevent the glass pane from sooting up. This way you can always enjoy an optimum
view of the flames with a minimum amount of cleaning. Couldn’t be more convenient.
More energy, better economy
Automagic because the automatic system squeezes out extra energy from the firewood. The
improved energy efficiency has been documented on several occasions, and you can expect
improvements of 20-30% compared to conventional wood-burning stoves. In short, you get
much more heating for your money with a HWAM. Couldn’t be more economical.
Minimum strain on the environment
Automagic because you can light up your stove with a green conscience, as the cleaner consumption
reduces the strain on the environment to a minimum. Both in the form of a reduced
consumption of resources, but also in the form of less smoke and particles.
HWAM uses the Nordic environmental certification, the Swan Label. In doing so, we remain
committed to improving the efficiency of our stoves, while at the same time reducing their
impact on the environment. Couldn’t be more environmental.
Tested and documented
Automagic because HWAM’s patented automatic system has been tested and documented
in numerous studies performed by test centres all over Europe. At the same time, and over
the last 20 years, we have regularly received positive feedback telling us about the pleasant
surprise it has been for our customers to switch from a conventional wood-burning stove
to an automagic HWAM. Couldn’t be safer.

I 30 Series
A master stroke of design brought to you by the successful design duo Strand + Hvass. Here you’ll find stylish and
functional design of the utmost intelligence.
The large glass pane can be opened upwards in a single, elegant
sliding motion, and in spite of its size, it can be opened
with just one hand. Not only is it user-friendly and pleasing
to the eye, but the motion also creates a partial vacuum that
minimises the risk of ash escaping into the room.
With the glass pane up, there is unobstructed access to the
deep combustion chamber, where the firewood lies safely and
stably in place. The functionality does not stop here. When
the glass pane is closed, the new HWAM Comfort Closing
System ensures a smooth and even closing, as the door
slides silently into place to form a tight seal. And if the glass
pane is in need of a quick cleaning, it can be removed with a
simple snap, tilted out and cleaned without any hassle.
The inside of the inserts is also well thought-out. In addition
to optimised combustion thanks to the HWAM automatic
we have developed a smoke deflector system that provides
a so called “4-step combustion” of the wood’s gasses. And in
addition to the usual primary air and pane flushing feature,
we have developed a double secondary air supply in order
to optimise the effect. Optimal effect means a much cleaner
burning.
The HWAM I 30 Series consists of three inserts.
The large glass pane elegantly – but discretely – provides the perfect frame for the dancing flames. The HWAM I 30/55 is for the design-minded
buyer who wants only the best, all the way down to the smallest detail. The pane opens in a smooth, upward motion when the insert is to be lit, and
firewood can be added easily. The insert’s width also means that the HWAM I 30/55 can hold larger pieces of firewood – all the way up to 55 cm!
Fiery Souls
Situated among softly undulating hills near lakes and forests
in the heart of Jutland is one of Denmark’s most beautiful
museums, Trapholt – a museum with a comprehensive
collection of modern Danish pictorial art and a furniture
museum with an exhibition of contemporary Danish
furniture design. The museum is located in grandiose
gardens and in addition to art objects of international
class offers a unique experience of nature, including an
idyllic view of the Kolding fjord.
One of its main attractions is the underground furniture
museum. Here, placed beneath – and deeply rooted in
– the Danish soil, the museum presents a collection of
the greatest classics in Danish furniture design, including
those of Hans Wegner, Poul Kjærholm and Arne Jacobsen
– creators of the universally famous and beloved furniture
icons the ”Egg”, the ”Swan”, the ”Bull” and ”PK 22”. In
these halls you also find the exhibition’s only wood-
burning stove, the HWAM 3310. A modern classic from
the designer duo Strand + Hvass.
The duo is named after its two members, Christina Strand
and Niels Hvass. They are both graduates from the Danish
design school, Danmarks Designskole, and together they
operate the Strand + Hvass design studio. Here they
have been designing high-quality furniture since 1998,
winning numerous design awards for their work; in 2003,
for instance, they were awarded ”Le prix de l’esthétique”
in Paris for their ”Menuet” chair, and most recently, in
2006, Strand + Hvass together with HWAM Heat Design
won a ”red dot” Design Award for the HWAM 3320
wood-burning stove.
Christina Strand and Niels Hvass experiment with shapes
and materials, creating simple, functional product designs
enhanced by a special idea. Furniture with a unique identity
and simplicity which brings out the true nature of the
materials in a dynamic, experimenting design concept
which at the same time signals classic Danish design
and style. This is clearly evidenced in the HWAM 3310
presented in Trapholt’s exhibitions.
1. HWAM 3310 – the sculptural qualities can be enjoyed from all angles
2. The Designers Christina Strand and Niels Hvass
3. Trapholt Museum in idyllic surroundings
The designers make the following comment on the
underlying ideas: ”HWAM 3310 represents a minimalist
design with an elegant and clear idiom. There are no
superfluous details to clutter the overall impression, and
the stove therefore matches any housing décor – modern
and classic alike. Thus, when lit, the stove inspires calmness
and consideration – and when not lit, it signals stylistic
awareness.”
One thing, however, remains clear. With their range of
products for HWAM Heat Design, Strand + Hvass have
created an innovative wood-burning stove design based
on the true nature of fire:
”Together with HWAM, we create a novel design
idiom based on the nature of fire and the pyramidal shape
of the flames. It is not just about creating a functional
piece of heating furniture, but equally about creating a
beautiful sculpture in the room with a design which in
itself is architectural and inspiring.”
And this they have managed. In Strand + Hvass’s play
with shapes and materials, they have created a design
concept whose style and richness of detail offers surprises
and inspiration to the user. This is the reason why their
products generate so much enthusiasm. They are simply
the essence of good design. Why is that so? The answer
is empathy:
”Good design is carefully thought-out design, created
from commitment and love. That, if anything, requires
you to be able to put yourself in another person’s place
and be attentive towards the functional and aesthetic
requirements which the design aims to fulfil”.
There is no doubt that good design is essential to them.
And at Trapholt, among the samples of sublime Danish
furniture design, the HWAM 3310 from Strand + Hvass
fits in completely naturally. That, after all, is the greatest
compliment of all.
1

1
The wildness of the flames is harnessed and framed within a beautiful,
subdued shape. The curved front with its special wide-screen effect
makes the fire visible from all positions within the room, and the door
slides elegantly upwards to allow access to the inside.
AshCleanSystem
When it is time to clean your wood-burning stove, ash must be effectively removed. The HWAM 3310,
HWAM 3320, and HWAM 4410 wood-burning stoves offer the solution, as each model is equipped with
the patented HWAM Ash Clean System. The system is discretely concealed behind the door, and it
ensures easier cleaning due to its completely closed system.
The HWAM Ash Clean System causes ash to fall into the closed ash pan, after which it can be easily
vacuumed out with a HWAM Ash Vac.
Rotating plinth
The rotating plinth is a new feature for the following
wood-burning stoves with top fl ue outlet: HWAM
3410, HWAM Beethoven, HWAM Beethoven H,
HWAM Vivaldi, HWAM Ravel, HWAM Mozart, HWAM
Dali, HWAM Monet and HWAM Monet H.
The wood-burning stove is placed on a rotating plinth,
and a ring is mounted between the stove and smoke
pipe. It is now possible and easy to rotate your woodburning
stove as you like.

ComfortClosingSystem
All HWAM wood-burning stoves designed by the design duo Strand + Hvass and HWAM 3410
designed by Anders C. Fasterholdt now feature an exclusive detail. When the glass door is closed,
the new HWAM Comfort Closing System ensures a smooth and even closing, as the door
slides silently into place to form a tight seal. The system reaffirms HWAM’s high technical and
innovative standards.
The lifting door’s vertical sliding movement minimises turbulence inside the combustion chamber,
which prevents ash from escaping into the room when the door is opened. This is convenient
for you, as it means less cleaning around your wood-burning stove.
O 2

Environmental awareness
You can light up a HWAM stove with a clear conscience.
For burning wood is a CO 2 -neutral process,
which means that no additional CO 2 is given off to
the global circulation. The CO 2 captured in the wood
is simply released again, so the wood gives off the
same amount of CO 2 as if it were decomposing on
the forest floor.
Therefore a HWAM stove is gentle on the environment.
Many years of development work have made
these stoves extremely efficient, enabling them to
utilise nearly all the energy in the wood. The smoke
coming out of the chimney consists mainly of water
vapours, resulting in a minimum strain on the environment
– unlike heating from oil, gas or coal.
HWAM is certified to use the Swan Label, the Nordic
environmental labelling standard. We remain committed
to making our stoves even more efficient and
environmentally friendly. This implies, i.e., that our
stoves meet the rigorous Norwegian environmental
standards on minimising the amount of hazardous
particles and gasses, which are among the most restrictive
in Europe. It also implies that with a HWAM
stove you will get a heating source with a very high
level of efficiency, which in turn gives you more environmentally
friendly heating for your money.
HWAM’s wood-burning stoves are subjected to comprehensive
testing to determine their performance
in different conditions and at different temperatures
and combustion speeds. The purpose is to ensure
that the stoves comply with our rigorous environmental
demands in any situation – imaginable as well
as unimaginable.
However, the biggest environmental risk comes from
improper firing in the stove. But we have got a solution
for that, too, as it is very easy to achieve optimum
combustion with a HWAM. All you need to do is to
use the right amount of dry firewood, and the patented
automatic system will guarantee a constantly
optimised air supply and combustion. Easy and convenient
– and more importantly: gentle on the envi-
ronment. After all, it does imply a certain obligation
to say: HWAM – intelligent heat.
Beechwood
Hard wood sort which also requires a high
temperature to catch fire. But it will reward
your patience with a lovely warmth and lots
of embers to create a nice and cosy atmosphere.
Furthermore, beechwood burns for
a long time, which makes it ideal for those
long, cold winter days.
Beech is an ideal firewood.
Oakwood
Hard wood sort which requires a high temperature
before it catches fire. But once the
fire catches, it is well worth the effort. A
lovely warmth will spread throughout the
room, accompanied by a pleasant view of
the glowing embers and a most satisfying
crackle of the fire.
Oak has a long burning and ember time.

Fire!
Most sorts of wood serve excellently as firewood. There are, however, variations between the different sorts,
for instance in terms of price and calorie value. But it is key for the wood to have a max. humidity of approx.
20% – i.e. to be almost completely dry (min. storage time 2 winters), before you light it up. This will ensure a
clean combustion with clear flames and prevent chimney soot and pollution from the stove.
Birchwood
Soft wood sort which catches fire easily and
warms well. It burns silently, developing less
smoke and embers than other sorts of wood.
On the other hand, it burns with spectacular
flames and an absolutely wonderful scent. The
same is true of lime and chestnut.
Birch is best suited for kindling and relighting.
Pinewood
Soft wood sort which catches fire very
easily and is therefore highly suitable for
lighting up the stove. Pinewood burns with
a tremendous bright flame, leaving only few
embers. The same is true of spruce.
Pinewood makes good kindling but burns
quickly.
Lava stone is an age-old natural material that fi ts
literally meet again.
The lava stone is available in two beautiful colours,
each with its very own distinctive characteristics. The
sand coloured lava stone is the result of melted stone
mass originating from the earth’s core. The stone has
an even surface and is both attractive and stylish.
The grey lava stone tells its own story, as various
remains of ash and pebble are found within the stone,
which means that no two stones are alike. This gives
Lava stone is an age-old natural material that fi ts
right in on the wood-burning stove. Fire and lava
literally meet again.
This gives
Fresh air system
No oxygen, no fire. It’s that simple. That is why a
constant flow of air to the wood-burning stove is
needed to create clean and effective combustion
in your new HWAM. But today’s homes must be
both energy efficient and environmentally friendly,
and they are therefore very well-insulated. This
makes good sense, but it can be a problem when
it comes to your wood-burning stove having a
sufficient amount of air – which is important for
building a proper fire. Especially if a heat recovery
system is installed, which mechanically replaces the
home’s indoor air. You can, of course, just open
a window, but who wants to do that on a cold
winter day just to let the wood-burning stove
get a bit of air?
We at HWAM have naturally given some thought
to the matter. The solution lies in a fresh air system,
which ensures a constant flow of air to the
wood-burning stove. HWAM’s fresh air system
creates air circulation that is almost completely
impermeable. Air needed for the fire inside the
wood-burning stove is sucked in from above via
a pipe that leads outside through the wall. When
the fire is burning, air flows further up through
the chimney, thereby closing the air circulation
cycle. The advantage of this system lies in the fact
that the wood-burning stove does not ’steal’ its
own warmth to keep the flames going. In this way,
you avoid unnecessary heat loss and gain a more
energy-efficient wood-burning stove. The system
consists of a casing that seals in the stove’s automatics
system, as well as the necessary pipe work
for the ground installation.
The system can be installed in several different
ways. Houses with basements can run the pipe
through the floor and via the basement to the
outside. Of course, the easiest method is to run
the pipe through the outside wall against which the
stove is positioned. If you are building a new house
or renovating, HWAM recommends constructing
a pipe system already in the initial phase, which
will ensure a sufficient amount of external air for
combustion in your new wood-burning stove.
You can, of course, consult with your local HWAM
dealer for further information on the available
options.
