GETTING THE MOST FROMYOUR CPUUniversal AudioUAD2 Solo/LaptopBy Danielle TeagardenThe idea of limitation strikes two-fold in creativepeople. On one hand, impending deadlinesseem to magically give rise to productivity— but, on the other hand, when you’remidproject, in the throes of creativity, and about toexecute a stroke of pure genius, having your computerreach its limit and run out of processing power can beenough to derail even the most focused of creators. And, sure, we can creatively compromise and still get agreat result, but a computer is supposed to be a tool tobring our visions to life, right? It’s meant to respond towhat we say — and not the other way around. But, for many of us, replacing our computer right now just isn’t in thecards. For a close-to-home example, I try to think of my computer ashaving a 3-year life span — that mental line is both for the purpose of“I-want-that” self-restraint and for plain-old budgetary reasons. And, ifmy trusty old computer’s in middle age and still kicking, then I’m going tohold off on my upgrade — even if they show off the coolest thing ever atthe latest computer trade show (dang it).So, what should you do in the face of a maxed-out CPU and a bubblingovercreative wellspring? I’ll give you two words: don’t compromise.Lucky for us, it’s a great time to be in the fi eld, as there are amazingsolutions coming out all of the time to address this very seemingconundrum. Today, you can rest assured knowing that whether you havea just-off-the-shelf laptop or a time-tested tower, there are easy ways foryou to squeeze in more plug-ins, more tracks, and more of your ideas —without having to buy a brand-new machine.Addressing Your Interface Part I —Choosing a Connection TypeIf we take one step outside of our computer, we reach our audio interface— and, if you’re really hurting for processing power, then, outside of yourCPU setup, this is the best place to begin the CPU-optimization process. To start, your “port” of choice plays the biggest role in how you’re gettingin tracks. Are you connecting your interface system via USB 1.1, USB2.0, or FireWire — or, are youconnecting via an ExpressCardor PCIe slot? The previous listwas roughly in order of speed(although, know that thereare good argumentson either side thatmake USB2.0 andMOTU 896mk3Apple MacBook 2.0GHz AluminumFireWire performance-competitive with one another). Ultimately, though, which connectivity solution is best for you depends largely on what portsyou have available on your computer. Nearly all computers feature USB,so going with a USB 2.0 audio interface is a safe bet if you’re optimizinga system that may see different computers from time to time — maybeif you’re bringing gear over to a friend’s house for recording a jam.Alternatively, FireWire offers up the benefi t of daisy-chaining in otherinterfaces and hard drives, without a performance hit.For the absolute best performance possible, though, you’ll want tochoose an ExpressCard system for your laptop or a PCIe system for yourdesktop computer. In terms of future expandability and power, nothingcompares to a PCIe-based setup — and, if you’re designing the ultimaterig for your project or professional studio setup, then that’s reasonenough to put a desktop computer at its heart. In this case, what you willsacrifi ce in portability, you will absolutely make up in forward compatibilityand expandability.Addressing Your Interface Part II —Today’s Boon of DSP InterfacesTo dovetail into the conversation about audio interface connections, it’swell worth noting that many of today’s interfaces offer up additionalDSP (Digital Signal Processing) power — beyond the performance you’llget through their connectivity methods. Still, you’ll fi nd that the mosthorsepower available is through the ExpressCard and PCIe systems. But,those systems aren’t always in the budget — or practical for basic homerecording and composing. So, if you’re tackling a band demo or handlinga singer/songwriter-type recording, then you may be well served to gowith an interface that features onboard DSP.An interface’s DSP capabilities can come in a few different fl avors. Someinterfaces offer up handy DSP-mixing fl exibility. With it, you can use anincluded software program to set up the mixes on the hardware, thenfl exibly route any input (or combination of inputs) to any output — andyou can control how much of each input goes into each output. This isparticularly useful when you’re recording a full band. You can give thelead singer a vocal-heavy mix, blending in the right amount of drumand guitar parts to inspire a tight performance. You can also route aclick track to the drummer and dial in the perfect blend of the otherinstruments in the band. Another bonus is that many of these interfaces

SWEETWATER’S ESSENTIAL GUIDESGlyph GT 050Qlet you save the setups and return to them, so it’s easy to get up andworking — without putting the mixing strain on your computer.Taking that one step further, many DSP interfaces also offer uponboard DSP effects. These can include reverb, delay, equalization, compression, and models of famous preamps — and more robustoptions are being released all of the time. When tracking with theseDSP interfaces, instead of using up your CPU power with a reverbplug-in, you can just dial in the onboard DSP effect to enjoy aheadphone mix that sounds great —without any pesky latency issues. You also usually have the option to record that mix “dry” (withoutthe effects) or “wet” (with the effects), which can help fi ll the roleof outboard gear in a budget-minded home studio or a portabilityconsciousmobile rig.Accelerate Your Plug-ins and Virtual InstrumentsOptimizing your interface setup can make a big difference whenyou’re tracking and routing raw audio. But, what about those of uslayering in virtual instruments or using plug-ins during mixdown? There’s no getting around the fact that many of the best-soundingplug-ins and virtual instruments are CPU-hungry giants — andthat makes sense, as software developers are always pushing theirprojects to the edge, making our virtual selection sound even betteras each generation of more capable computers comes out. Luckily, though, the industry is also on the ball with this one — and manyplug-in makers are teaming up with hardware developers to createDSP-driven versions of these plug-ins.The selection of DSP-powered plug-ins and virtual instruments isgrowing all of the time. And, like the DSP capabilities of interfaces, the options come in a few different varieties. Some versions run onactual external hardware. With the hardware, you can get your handson a plug-in’s parameters and tweak them to your liking, just like youwould with a dedicated control surface. Other DSP options come in theform of PCIe cards. Akin to PCIe-based audio interfaces, these cardsinstall right into your desktop computer and offer up an impressivegirth of processing power.Once you’ve offloaded much of your signal-processing needs, you mayfind that you have enough power to run your favorite virtual instrumentsor plug-ins without issues. But, if you’re looking to free up the mostnative power possible, there are modules available that can run astaggering amount of VST-compatible plug-ins or virtual instruments.A secondary benefit to these systems is that they’re also optimized forstage use — so, if you’re actively working both on the stage and in thestudio, then this may be the most cost-effective option for enjoying yourfavorite plug-ins and instrument sounds in both arenas. Finally, if you’re still wanting even more power, it’s worth quickmention that investing in a piece or two of great outboard gear cango a long way toward cutting down your CPU plug-in load. True, having a massive collection of virtual gear to choose from canmake a gearhead’s heart beat faster — and that virtual collectionis still more than worth having available in your tool box — butachieving your core sound through a few pieces of gear that youreally “know” can be just the trick for achieving a more polishedsound. And, after all, having a bit of eye candy in the studio racknever hurt anyone. The Nuts and the Bolts: Your Hard Drive and RAMUpgrading the guts of your computer may not be nearly as exciting asFocusrite Liquid Mixadding a slick new interface to your rig. But, if you haven’talready maxed out your inside-the-computer potential, then you’remissing out on a signifi cant system boost.Let’s startwith the hard drive. No matter the kind of work you’redi doing, you’ll want to be sure you have a dedicated hard drive forrecording. With off-the-shelf computers getting more and morebeefy, a common mistake is to use your computer’s system drivefor everything — from running your DAW software to streaming thevirtual instrument samples to accepting the newly recorded information— and that’s a lot to ask of one drive. Instead, you’ll enjoy aperformance boost by using a separate recording hard drive — and toreally make the most out of your system, it’s worth having yet anotherhard drive to handle the streaming of all of your samples. In any event, having an extra drive isn’t going to help if it’s not up to par.Today, you’ll want to be sure you’re streaming samples from andrecording to at least a 7200RPM drive. You’ll also want to make surethat the drive has the Oxford 924 bridging chip. This will ensure thatthe drive is capable of handling audio production’s high demands —and it will also qualify the drive for use with today’s most popular andprofessional DAWs.Another vital system element is the amount of RAM (Random AccessMemory) you have installed in your computer. Make sure you have atleast 2GB of RAM — and, if you’re at 2GB, then think about movingup to 4GB — if your computer allows it. Adding RAM is one of themost effective ways to boost your computer’s effi ciency when runningapplications, and you’ll be amazed by how much more smoothly yoursystem runs. Also, remember that you get a slight performance boostwhen you upgrade your RAM in pairs (i.e., upgrade with two 2GBsticks, instead of two 1GB sticks and one 2GB stick).Simple Roads Less TraveledEven before you add any new gear to help speed up your system, consider taking a few minutes to double check your system settings.Sometimes, even slight adjustments — such as shutting off yourwireless card — can make drastic improvements to your computer’sperformance. To help you with this, our SweetCare service crewhas put together really useful computer-optimization guides — forboth Mac and PC — which you can access online. Just visit www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare and search for either “Mac optimization”or “PC optimization.”Saying Goodbye to the BottleneckLet’s face it; as creatively and technologically inclined people, we’realways going to want a little bit more — whether that means moresounds, more gadgets, more from ourselves, or more processingpower to see our ideas through to fully realized projects. So, here’sto snagging a few pieces of gear; getting over that CPU-limit hurdle;and getting up and running into the smooth, creative straightaway —hopefully with the wind of inspirationat your back.
