MERRIWA CENTRAL SCHOOLsome of the delectable we conjured over thefive week course.Despite some participants claiming they couldn’tcook (Julie Russell) every member of the classprepared, cooked and served each and everydish successfully over our course. We, as aclass, decided to focus on a mix of areas suchas desserts, main meals and starters, whichautomatically increases the difficulty as you arenot solely focused on pastries, desserts orwhatever specific area you have chosen. So all that aside I have chosen to share 1 of oursimple recipes with you.PARMESAN CRUSTED CHICKEN ANDBEETROOT RISOTTOChicken BreastBread - 2 slicesParmasen Chesse - 100gRisotto Aborio Rice - 150g Stock - 600ml Beetroot - 1 large Onion - 1 Spinach/Parsley - small handful Butter - 50gMethod: Beetroot - peel. Chop. Bake in oven forapprox. 20 minutes.Chef’s suggestion - For variety you can poachbeetroot in a balsamic or stock liquid. They alsomatch well with oranges.Crust - Blend or grate bread to makecrumbs. Add finely grated Parmesan (orsimilar cheese)Chicken - Trim chicken, sear in pan, placeon tray, cover in crust. Bake approx. 15 -17 mins or until the chicken is cookedthrough and top is golden brown.Risotto - Melt butter and oil in sauce pan.Add diced onion. Sweat for about 5 -7minutes. Add Arborio rice and stircontinuously so the oil/butter coats everygrain of rice. When rice slightly brownsand smells ‘nutty’ add stock.Chef’s tip - add small amounts at a time and stirrisotto regularly. This creates a glutinous saucearound the rice adding a creamy texture to thedish. Add stock in small amounts until the riceis ready. Fold in beetroot at the end.Optional is to add cheese at this stage – weused fetta cheese.ServeAaron CreamerHospitality TeacherANZAC DAY MARCH25 APRILAll students are encouraged to attend theservice in full school uniform and to march withthe school. ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOLWow, is it really the last week of Term Onealready? That went so quickly.Year 5/6 have had an amazingly busy term.Since our last Ringer article the majority of usrepresented St Joseph’s at the DiocesanLeaders Day at Lochinvar and at BlandfordHorse Sports, we ran the cross country, wecelebrated Holy Week and Easter, and inbetween all this we managed to get in a lot ofquality learning and school work. The Year Six students travelled to St Patrick’sPrimary School at Lochinvar and attended theLeaders Day. This was a very insightfulexperience as we mixed with our peers at otherschools in the Diocese. We looked at thequalities that great leaders exhibit and realisedthat anybody can display these qualities and bea leader. It does not matter how young aperson is, with the right attitude they can beleaders. We have been incorporating thesequalities into our leadership at St Joseph’s withtremendous success. In Religion this term we have studied the topicsThe Life and Times of Jesus, A Time forReconciliation, and The Way of the Cross. Amajor part of this learning for us as leaders hasbeen that nobody is perfect and we are allgoing to make the occasional mistake in life, butit is what we learn from these mistakes andhow we repent and make up for our mistakesthat is really important. We researched timeswhen Jesus forgave those who had wrongedhim and just like we need to make up for ourown mistakes, we need to also forgive themistakes of others.Text books are basically a thing of the past inYear 5/6 at St Joseph’s. This means we are nowwriting much more than we wrote last year. Ithas been really good for us as we learn thesubject through a range of activities such asusing concrete materials, active learning, ICT,and video (with BTN proving to be extremelypopular with Mr Morris), then we write andillustrate the results of this learning as opposedto doing a worksheet or something else in abook. Our main focus this term has been Australia.HSIE, English and Creative Arts have beenbased around Australian themes. HSIE hasbeen particularly interesting as we haveresearched and completed PowerPointpresentations or Popplets on the Aboriginalheritage in Australia, looking at issues such asthe Stolen Generation, segregation, Federationand their fight to be recognised as citizens thatresulted in the 1967 Referendum. We have alsolearnt about the struggles that immigrants facewhen coming to Australia and why people fromother countries wish to come and live in thisgreat land.We have designed our own Australian Flagsincorporating white European settlement,Aboriginal heritage and recent immigration inCreative Arts. We have also studied some greatAustralian art this term. Artists such as ArthurStreeton and Sidney Nolan have been at theforefront of our discussions. We are currentlyfinishing off our own Ned Kelly paintings in thestyle of Nolan’s ‘Ned Kelly’ series. In Science we have had lots of differentlearning experiences based aroundEarthquakes. We have enjoyed the unitimmensely learning about the tectonic platemovement in the earth, the Ring of Fire, researching earthquakes from around theworld, exploring the likeness of eggs to that ofthe earth, using playdough as tectonic platesand shaking tables to simulate a seismometer. We have also been improving our Spelling,Reading and Writing in English activities. Wehave written expositions from an aboriginalperson’s point of view arguing to say YES in the1967 referendum, a discussion on social mediathat has us prepared for our PDH Cyber Safetyunit in Term Two and the first exposition of2013 that was ‘2013 is going to be better than2012’. Our last thing this term will be to write apersuasive response on ‘Has Term One 2013been better than 2012?’ So far we think we cansafely say it definitely has been.Mark MorrisYear 5/6 TeacherMERRIWA RINGER Thursday 11 April 2013 Page 10

ST DAVID’ UCA PASTOR ROSS NEVILLEHave you ever read a book that made you feeldifferent about life or what you are doing? You feel enthusiastic, you feel motivated, youfeel excited. I have read a few novels, articlesand text books that have made me feel likethat. I sometimes read some articles inmagazines that make you feel like ‘I’ve got totry that or change’. I have read articles aboutfarming and management that have made methink ‘That makes a lot of sense, I’ll have to tryand learn more’. This happened to me when Iheard about ‘Holistic Farming’.It just made so much sense to not farm just forprofit or production but to manage your farmingstrategy to manage and consider: the soil, theplants, the family, the animals, the community, what my goals were, profit, whenever I made afarm decision. It required me to change mypractices and ways of thinking but it was awhole lot more satisfying for everyone. I nowknow a lot of farmers who farm this way and ithas changed their lives. On Sunday at St David’s, we heard from RhyllisDavies from the bible society. Rhyllis wastalking about how people around the world arefinding that when they read the bible their liveschanged. Did you know that Nigeria has thefastest growing Christian community in theworld. In the Muslim world the bible society isstruggling to keep up with the printing of biblesfor countries such as Syria, Iran and Iraq.People in countries around the world, just byreading about a God who cares, will sacrificehimself for you personally and wants to befriend with you, are changing the way they arelive. We don’t have all the anxieties of war andpersecution in some of these countries but wedo have the anxieties of work security, healthand managing money. Most people in oursociety are struggling to cope. We know this bythe number of mental health reports that arecoming out.But reading about the activities of Jesus andthen applying and believing in the teaching hegives us, can and is, making a difference tomany peoples lives. Why don’t you try readingsome parts of the bible! It actually is a libraryof books. RELIEVING THE PRESSURE OF HEARTDISEASEOn April 7 each year, the World HealthOrganisation (WHO) selects and highlights amajor world health issue. This year the themeis High Blood Pressure.Of course, having some blood pressure isvitally important. It’s what keeps those lifesustaining, oxygenated red blood cellscirculating around our body. But too muchblood pressure can result in a catastrophicoutcome – just like a pressure cooker on highheat without an escape valve.Blood pressure is designated by two readings. The higher of these (the systolic) is a measureof the pressure when the heart is beating andthe lower reading (the diastolic) is a measureof resting pressure – when the heart relaxes.Blood pressure is usually measured inmillimetres of mercury – abbreviated to“mmHg” – and if the systolic reading is equalto or above 140 mmHg and/or the diastolicreading equal to or above 90 mmHg then theblood pressure is considered to be high.Hypertension (the medical term forabnormally high blood pressure) has beendesignated by the WHO as one of the mostserious risk factors for death worldwide. It isestimated that about 30% of Australian adultshave hypertension; and most of these peopleare receiving no treatment. What makes hypertension so serious is that, well before the explosive heart attack orstroke occurs, there is underlying, sometimesirreparable damage done to the cardiovascularsystem, the kidneys and the brain. Also, hypertension, especially when combined withdiabetes, significantly increases the risk ofblindness.MERRIWA PHARMACYIn most cases the actual cause of high bloodpressure can’t be identified, but we do knowwhat groups of people are most at risk ofdeveloping hypertension; and we do know wayswhereby we can reduce the risk. There are usually no symptoms of hypertension;at least generally not until the blood pressurereaches a sustained dangerous level. So, if thereis a history in the family of heart disease, kidneydisease or diabetes, a regular – at least yearly –check up with your GP is essential. If you do have hypertension, regular and longterm treatment with medication will most likelybe a necessity. Understanding how these bloodpressure medicines work is helpful; and yourpharmacist can provide you with so-calledConsumer Medicines Information (CMI) whichexplains the benefits and the occasionalproblems you may encounter. Uncomfortableside effects with anti-hypertensive therapy cansometimes be experienced, especially in theearly stages of treatment, so it’s nice to knowwhat to expect. For more information about hypertension askfor the Blood Pressure fact card at MerriwaPharmacy. There are also cards on Diabetes,Weight and Health, Exercise and the Heart, andStaying a Non-Smoker.Taking ownership of a medical condition willoften help improve outcomes. Withhypertension this can sometimes be achieved bythe use of home blood pressure measuringdevices. The modern machines are simple andeasy to use. Check with your doctor whetherone of these could be an advantage. And if youhave trouble remembering to take your bloodpressure tablets, a “dose administration aid” ormedication blister pack could help. It’s as well to remember that there are somemedicines – both prescription and non-MERRIWA RINGER Thursday 11 April 2013 Page 16

prescription medicines – which can cause orworsen hypertension. This includes some painrelievers, anti-depressants, oral contraceptives, cough and cold products and various herbalpreparations. COOKING WITH AARON CREAMERHello Merriwa! I am back with apologies aftermissing last week due to illness. My apologiesextend to everyone who eagerly opened theRinger searching for my article, only to bedisappointed by the non-attendance.TODAY’S TOPIC : CARBOHYDRATESThis is a controversial subject in nutritionworlds at the moment. There are some ideasthat carbohydrates (carbs) are the enemy in afat loss diet. Here are some facts:Our bodies need carbohydrates to liveOur brain prefers carbohydrates as anenergy sourceCarbohydrates make up a large part ofour dietExcess or poor carbohydrate choice canincrease body fatPoor quantity choice can affect bloodsugar levels and have health effectsIt is accepted that carbs are essential. Whatfoods make up this category you ask?Basically, any plant based foods that convertto sugar in our bodies. Where this gets trickyis in the production and use of these foods. For example, wheat is a carbohydrate. Wheatis used for pasta, flour, semolina and manyother products. What this means is that carbsend up meaning everything from cakes, pastries, pasta, fruits, quinoa, noodles, beansetc. Now to have a category of foods that couldhave sprouted grain bread and sweetened cupcakes in the same category is nearlyimpossible to understand and navigatesuccessfully. Following is a list of some highquality carbohydrates:Sweet potatoQuinoaPolentaBrown ricePeas/beans – kidney, cannelloni, chickpeas, etc. When using these foods simple is best, andhere is what I do with some of those foods –mashed sweet potatoquinoa can be used to make a mash orporridge type of mixturebrown rice (boiled) can be used to makefried ricepeas/beans can be stewed with tomato orin stock, you can make hommus fromchick peas, add them to dishes like ossobucco or lamb shanks. There are no real rules with how you use thecarbs above, just experiment and do whatevertastes nice. Remember to eat lots of vegetablesand fruits to go with the complex carbs listedabove.I hope I have shed some light on this subjectand can add some variety to your diet. I wouldlike to take this chance to thank people for theirfeedback over the last few weeks. Many peoplehave asked about topics they would likeexplained which I most definitely will do nextschool term.As always if you would like me to explainsomething or would like some tips on cookery ina certain area please contact me at MerriwaCentral School on 6548 2119.Aaron CreamerThursday and FridayMERRIWA RINGER Thursday 11 April 2013 Page 18

MORTGAGE CHOICEYou don’t need luck on your side to gainloan approvalSuccess relies on borrowers of all typesticking the check boxeshere is a range of competitive home loan dealsavailable in today’s mortgage market butpotential borrowers may miss out on the offersif their loan approval is knocked-back ordelayed. To ensure a smooth approval process,Mortgage Choice urges potential borrowers ofall types to tick all the check boxes in their loanapplication.Local Mortgage Choice franchise owner LaurenMurphy said, “Applying for loan approval of anytype requires more than having good luck onyour side. It is important to understand whatlenders will be looking for when deciding to loanyou money to purchase property, renovate, orfor other means.”“Lenders have different but fair methods fordetermining whether borrowers can take on aloan secured against a property. They look forevidence that the borrower is a good saver orhas built equity, and has a healthy creditrecord, steady employment and manageablelevels of debt.“Keep in mind this applies to all types ofborrowers, whether it is your first, fifth orfiftieth loan application, lenders will still assessyour ability to borrow funds each and everytime.“Having the help of a professional mortgagebroker in the loan approval process may help.Working with you to complete the loanapplication, your mortgage broker will know thelender’s requirements, prompt you to supply therequired documentation and submit theapplication on your behalf. The mortgagebroker will then follow up the application andCustom MadeKitchenshelp guide the loan to settlement.”To put you on a path to a smooth loan approvalprocess, I have compiled a basic five stepchecklist from which to start:1. Steady employment and regular savings -Lenders want to see a steady employmenthistory and evidence of regular savings. Forexisting borrowers, they look for regular loanrepayments. Some lenders consider rentalpayments as savings evidence, but there maybe conditions attached, so do your research.2. Clean credit file - Check whether you havemultiple enquires or any defaults in your credithistory, and if so, try to resolve them with therelevant credit provider before you apply for ahome loan and if need be, provide anexplanation to your lender. You can order acopy of your credit file from suppliers such aswww.mycreditfile.com.au.3.Satisfactory statements - Your recent bankstatements should be free from any suspiciouswithdrawals or transfers such as movements ofsizeable sums of money into or from youraccount/s. If this does occur, include anexplanation for the transaction in your loanapplication.4. Document your debt - Lenders will requireyou to list your current financial commitments, such as rent car and personal loans, credit andstore cards, HELP debt, child maintenance, etc.Have your records on hand. Keep in mind theamount owed on your store and credit cardswill not be the key factor for lenders; whenassessing your ability to repay the loan, lenderswill consider your overall credit limit.5. Know your limits - For those looking topurchase property, there may be borrowinglimitations based on your deposit amount and/or the property’s location, size and type. Forthese reasons, consider using a local mortgagebroker to help you research the mortgagemarket before applying for a loan. For further information, call 0408 480 562, visitaddress or log ontowww.mortgagechoice.com.au/lauren.murphyLauren MurphyMERRIWA RINGER Thursday 11 April 2013 Page 22

MERRIWA HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT GROUP NEWSIn a recent MHEG Ringer article, I reportedthat the township of Merriwa would beexempt from coal seam gas mining becauseof amendments to the laws brought in by theNSW Government. It now appears that thisstatement was incorrect and for this, Iapologise. For a township to be exempt from coal seamgas mining it must have 1000 or moreresidents and Merriwa’s population is belowthis figure. This makes it even more important thatMerriwa and district becomes involved in theprocess of declaring itself to be a Coal SeamGasfield Free Community. Many communities within NSW including theLiverpool Plains communities of Blackville,Mullaley and Warrah have already undertakenthis process. WOOLBROOK RURAL INDUSTRIESThere were no doubt times when York Motors’strict business protocols may have saved usfrom falling into the traps which sometimessnared others. We had several drivers, including one whose parents years before hademigrated to Australia from one of the oldBritish Asian colonies, Burma or Hong Kongperhaps, or maybe a lesser known one suchas Sarawak or British North West Borneo(now Sabah). He must have still hadconnections there because he returnedoccasionally. He was only with us a fewmonths before he left, and had probably beenmaking plans for some time, because he thencarried out a very careful, well organised andsuccessful scam. He had been living in thewestern suburbs with a woman who wasapparently well off after receiving aninheritance. After he left us he told her hedesperately wanted to go interstate truckingon his own account but did not have thewherewithal so she provided him with$40,000 to buy a truck plus some workingexpenses, this in the 1970s when $40,000plus was worth a good deal more than now.He negotiated with a large Sydney steelmerchant and fabricator under which hewould provide a prime mover and they wouldsupply him with their own specialisedsemitrailer and sufficient work to keep himbusy, a normal subcontracting arrangement. On the strength of this he agreed to buy aprime mover from a well known truckcompany in Sydney. On a Friday afternoon(always late on a Friday afternoon!!) a fewdays before he was scheduled to take deliveryof the truck he went to them saying the steelcompany had an urgent interstate deliveryalready loaded on their trailer, no primemover, and wanted him to take it toMelbourne for delivery next day, Saturday. The truck company declined his personalcheque and he said in that case he riskedlosing the contract and the deal would be off. However, he asked them to ring his bankwhich would no doubt verify the money wasthere to meet his personal cheque for$40,000. They did this, though I suspect thebank did not say they would honour it, butonly that at the time there were sufficientfunds to do so. York Motors would not haveaccepted this, the salesman would have hadto go with the customer to the bank and get abank cheque before delivery, and if the bankwere closed by the time they got there, then nodelivery. Anyway, in the end they agreed togive delivery on the strength of his personalcheque and he took off that night, loaded withsteel to Melbourne, where he also hadeverything organised.About the middle of the following week Ireceived an anguished call from the GeneralManager who had authorised the truck delivery. The cheque had bounced and nobody, including the woman he was living with and thesteel company, seemed to know where ourlikely lad was, and it was some time beforeeverything, or most of it, was finally revealed. The prime mover, the semitrailer and the loadof steel had completely disappeared for ever, the first two no doubt dismantled for spareparts and the load of steel sold to a fence, asteel fence no doubt! (Sorry!). On Monday, when the banks opened in Melbourne, he hadcleaned the account out except for a couple ofthousand dollars, gone to the airport, and bythe time the cheque bounced he was long goneto Asia somewhere! We had an odd case when a very well knownBritish TV personality (well, at least he was wellknown forty odd years ago) was receivingmuch publicity prior to a planned tour inAustralia. One of our salesmen had taken a callfrom, and personally spoken to, a man claimingto be in charge of the preparations for the tour.He was staying at a very expensive hotel in theSydney CBD where he seemed to treated withsome reverence, and he said the requirementsfor the proposed tour included two mediumsized coaches, a large prime mover with asemitrailer pantechnicon for all his gear, twoforklifts, a table top truck to carry them, andWoolbrook Rural IndustriesMax Wurcker 6548 2150Nearly everything for farmers at rock bottomprices! REMINDERThe deadline forarticles andadvertisements for theMerriwa Ringer isMonday 29April at12.00pmother items such as a couple of station wagonsand smaller equipment. The salesman askedme what he should do, and I said play alongwith him (obviously such a sale, if genuine, wasvery valuable, but also the possible PR andpublicity) without offending him in any way, butremember not to commit us to anything while Imade some enquiries. At that time I had a goodmany contacts in the trucking and truckingrelated industries including forklift companiesand body builders, and soon found that ourcustomer had done the rounds with many ofthem, though we appeared to be the only truckAnyway, to cut a long story short, our salesmanhad several contacts with him over about threeweeks before going to see him one day at hishotel, only to be told that the day before somemen in white coats, accompanied by a couple ofpolice, had arrived and taken him away in anambulance. He had caught the hotel for severalthousand dollars and various other companiesfor smaller amounts, but fortunately YorkMotors protocols meant he had cost us nothingexcept inconvenience and wasted time.Max Wurcker* When reporting an incident to the Police, always request and record your Incident Reference NumberMERRIWA RINGER Thursday 11 April 2013 Page 30

ROSTO OLIVESMERRIWA FESTIVAL OF THE FLEECES7 AND 8 JUNE“OUR PRIVILEGE TO SPONSOR”''Rosto Olive Oil” is pleased to be a sponsor ofthe Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces as we feel itis such a wonderfully wholesome event.Even before we planted our first Olive tree 15years ago our sheep ran free down Merriwa'smain street, adorned with red socks! We love the reminder of the importance ofsheep in Merriwa's history and indeed inAustralia. We recall the days when the festivalwas held in the historic Brindley Park woolshedand last year loved watching man work with histrusty sheep dog. After several years of drought we found sheeptoo hard on our country so the family resolvedto plant 60,000 olive trees over six years (theolive tree is able to cope with drought bystopping transpiration from leaves when too hotand protecting roots with a cork likecompound).Despite this resilience we recently lost manytrees in a lightening grass fire. A disaster wasavoided thanks to volunteer firefighters from allover Merriwa. The volunteering spirit, thatenables events like the festival ,is the heart ofMerriwa. It is our privilege to be part of the Merriwacommunity and to be a major sponsor of theFestival of the Fleeces 2013.Thank you.Regards SteveCOUNTING DOWN TO THE FESTIVALThe June long weekend is only 9 weeks away.Where else can you watch a mob of sheep (inred socks) leading a parade. CASSILIS RODEOThe Cassilis Rodeo this year was postponedfrom the 2 February to the 26 April due to rain. This was a huge disappointment for thecommittee and everyone involved as so muchwork goes into organising this successful event. The Cassilis rodeo was born in 1983. A group oflocals decided to run a rodeo and campdraft onthe same day. With the idea to raise money forthe different organisations of the Cassilisdistrict. The campdraft would start off at firstlight and run to 3.00pm. For the next two hoursthe committee would transform the groundsinto a rodeo arena. The rodeo will start at5.00pm and run to late. With very little resources the chutes, lights, toilets and time event gear was either donatedor hired. The Camp draft event ceased in theearly 1990s. This was very unfortunate for thecommunity but the rodeo stayed strong and gotstronger as the years went by. This was thecommunity’s largest fundraising event for theyear and the rules were you work it, youreceive. So with that the Pony Cub, School, ParkTrust and Churches all had tasks to preform andwould receive a percentage of the profits. With the small towns population on the 5Saturday of the year swelling from 110 toexcess of 1500 people the rodeo provides thecommunity with on average $8000.00 of moneyto share between the different organisations. We see the rodeo as a non-profit organisationas all money raised goes back into thecommunity. The Cassilis rodeo has hosted manychampion drafters, barrel racers, timed eventcompetitors and cowboys, even a nationalchampionship was held at Cassilis. Noviceevents have always been a big feature of ourrodeo as that’s where it all begins. This year saw a mix of new and old hands formthe committee. This mix has worked well andhas achieved a lot, namely the construction ofentirely new chutes, race and overhead ramp.It was a major undertaking with many manhours volunteered over many weekends toerect and install the new facilities. It has beenheartening to see how easily so manyvolunteers have given up their weekends tohelp the Rodeo progress forward. Some of thevolunteers have been old hands who have beenvolunteering for years, along with new peoplewho just have an interest in seeing anestablished prized local event continue. Thecommittee in the future would like to improvethe yarding, loading, unsaddling, bar andcanteen areas. The War Memorial Park Trust, the caretaker ofthe park have also been working hard with newunisex and disabled toilets installed. The ParksTrust is also in the planning stage of othermajor improvements to the parks facilities(watch this space).A big thank you must be expressed to all of ourpast and existing sponsors. Running a rodeo iscostly and without the sponsorship it would notbe possible. Finally thank you to the township of Cassilisand all of its volunteers for providing this greatevent for the last 31 years.Hope to see you all on 26 April 2013 at theCassilis rodeo.Scott WittonPresidentThe Spice Grill Restaurant / Café112 Bettington Street MerriwaOpen 7 DaysSun - Tue 7am - 6pmWed - Sat 7am - 8pmCome in and try our freshly prepared Indian andAustralian CuisineDine in or Take Away AvailableMERRIWA RINGER Thursday 11 April 2013 Page 34

“HAPPY GURU”THE HIPPY SHOPHello Lovelies. Welcome to this week’s GuruRinger write-up. Time sure does fly on by whenyou’re busy winding back your clock and youthink should I be going forwards or backwards -you have a mental blank. Then youremember you go back an hour with the timeand need to remember if you were ripped offan hour or did I score an extra hours sleep? Then you work it out, you scored an extra hoursleep but then you think… there’s so manyclocks in this house, surely I don’t have tochange them all now. What will we have fordinner, anyway? We can’t have left over Eastereggs again. What on earth am I thinking? We’ve never had Easter eggs for dinner. Why iseveryone always eating Easter eggs for dinnerthese days? Oh, wait. That was a dream I washaving when I woke up this morning. I’m notsure that extra hour of sleep was worth it. Iwas dreaming like a mad man and these clocksare doing my head in. Six clocks down, three togo. Where’s the manual for this dumb clock onthe stove. The time on the oven always flashesat 11.22am, my date of birth – that’s freaky. How can I change it? As always, befabulous and smile, you’re designed to. Loveand Peace.PHOTO COMPETITION HELPDuncan CareyThis month’s theme is going to prove achallenge, but with a little thought, we’re sureyou’ll come up with some creative entries. Insubmitting your photos, one thing we look forare images with clean lines, sharp, crisp detailsand no blurring (unless it relates to the photo).99% of the time, when an image is not sharpit’s because of camera movement. Any amountof movement can potentially blur an image, butthere are several things you can do to avoidcamera shake. If your shutter speed is slow, you willneed to support your camera or use atripod. Generally anything under 1/60’swill need to be stabilised with a tripod. If you have “image stabiliser” turn it on toreduce vibration, however if you are usinga tripod, make sure it’s turned off as itcan actually have the opposite affect andreduce sharpness. Use the sharpest aperture. This istypically 2 to 3 stops down from thewidest aperture, putting it around f/8 onmost lenses. Use your mirror lock-up (MLU). Thisholds the mirror in its retracted positionso that when you take your shot, itdoesn’t move.Increase your shutter speed – a fasterspeed is less susceptible to movement.Learn and understand the relationshipbetween is-shutter speed-aperture.There are a combination of techniquesyou can use for getting sharper images.Regardless of whether you use the manual orautomatic settings on your camera, there isone common fault that lies with thephotographer, rather than the camera. That’sthe actual taking of a photo. When pressingdown the shutter button, do so as gently asyou can. Squeeze the button until you havefinished taking the image, then release. Whata lot of photographers do is jab it and releasestraight away. The camera detects even theslightest movement and can cause blurredimages. All entries are to be submitted by Monday 29April, 2013 by 12:00pm. The criteria set bythe Festival of the Fleeces Committee for thiscompetition is quite broad, so grab yourcamera and let’s see what you can come upwith.Suzie KirkZanneArt PhotographyMERRIWA RINGER Thursday 11 April 2013 Page 36

What a season we have had. The rosemaryplanted throughout Merriwa has done prettywell. We need to get this year’s ANZAC Dayneeds organised. Sydney Legacy were verypleased with last year’s efforts and are lookingfor the same support again this year. Theysent us some photos of the event including theGovernor receiving a sprig made from theGallipoli rosemary planted at the MerriwaCenotaph. The time table for April will work like this:Rosemary collection: Wednesday 17Rosemary delivered to Sydney: Monday22Legacy makes sprigs: Monday 22 -Wednesday 24ANZAC Day: Thursday 25As always, we can improve on the way we didthings last year. Legacy have suggested twopossible ideas. The first would be to trim therosemary to the final sprig size so that wedon’t send material that has a high wastagerate and generates high volume of material tobe transported. The second is to place the sticker onto thesprig and box them up. These steps arefeasible but depend on the volume ofvolunteers that can be mustered. We will need volunteers to: Harvest public areas and collectrosemary from contributors Trim, tag and refrigerate sprigs fordispatch Dispatch to SydneyIf you are able to assist, please contact theMerriwa RSL Club and leave your details.Volunteers are also being sourced of theMerriwa Central School.MERRIWA ROSEMARY FOR LEGACYHer Excellency receiving her sprig. The sprigs.Volunteers distributingthe rosemary. If you have Rosemary to donate, please advisethe RSL Club also.Mal Frame, John Penninger, MichaelO’NeilMERRIWA RINGER Thursday 11 April 2013 Page 37

Sconecrossed the try line in about the 18 th min mark, and followed with a couple more tries beforethe break to take a 22 - 0 lead at half time.Scone scored twice more in the second half, but to Merriwa’s credit they continued to play ahard physical game and eventually whererewarded with a late try, with the final scoreScone 34 Merriwa 6. The players tried hard allgame and I am confident with some hardtraining, more game time together and thereturn of a few players the teams future will bebright. This week the Magpies are away to Greta-Branxton on Sunday, kick off time 12.30pm,with the next home game being Saturday the20 April at 3.00pm against Aberdeen.Matt MorganPresidentMERRIWA RINGER Thursday 11 April 2013 Page 39

Most players were out of positionbut all played well regardless.Kym stated before the game that she dreadsthe time she pulls out Centre and that’s exactlywhat she did in the first quarter. She need nothave worried though as she made a greatCentre, putting lots of pressure on theopposition. She then also played Goal Shooterand after telling us all she can’t shoot shescored a few goals.Maddilyn and Taylah played Goal Shooter &Goal Attack and scored about 20 goals in aquarter, what an awesome effort. They playedwell together in the circle, I was very proud. Both Maddilyn and Taylah try very hard everyweek in all positions.Shai played in a numberof positions but she isalways so strong indefence the opposingcompetitors don’t standa chance.Alicia played a quarteras Goal Keeper andprevented so manygoals working hard tokeep the scoring to aminimum. Alicia alwaysgives 100% whethershe plays attack or defence.Kellie played great in the four positions sheplayed in, even the quarter as Centre. Sheseemed to think that she was struggling buteveryone else thought she was doing anamazing job playing Centre in the last quarter. In the end everyone had a great time andplayed really well and we won 44 to 15.
