Robotic Surgical <strong>System</strong> Offers LessInvasive Option for Many Patient ProceduresThank you to all who have generously supported <strong>the</strong>Foundation’s initiative to fund <strong>the</strong> surgical robot at <strong>Unity</strong> Hospital.Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive technique performed by a surgeonusing a mechanical device known as a “surgical robot.”Robotic surgerypatients report lesspost-operativediscomfort and shorterrecovery times.According to Nagendra Nadaraja, M.D., chair of <strong>the</strong> Department of Surgeryat <strong>Unity</strong> Hospital, more than 100 robotic-assisted surgical cases have beenperformed since December 2011. Currently at <strong>Unity</strong> Hospital, colorectal,gynecological (including hysterectomy), and urological procedures (includingprostatectomy) are performed with <strong>the</strong> assistance of <strong>the</strong> surgical robot.“Robotic prostatectomy is now recognized by <strong>the</strong> medical and surgicalcommunity as <strong>the</strong> standard of care,” Dr. Nadaraja says. As aformer board member, he wasinstrumental in <strong>the</strong> creation anddevelopment of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>System</strong>.Dr. Nadaraja and his wife, IranganiNadaraja, M.D., served as <strong>2012</strong> Galaco-chairs with Dr. Mehta and his wife,Manjula. After 12 years of support to<strong>the</strong> Gala, <strong>the</strong> Mehtas are steppingdown as co-chairs to assume <strong>the</strong>irnew roles as first-time grandparents.Our heartfelt gratitude and bestwishes to <strong>the</strong> Nadarajas and <strong>the</strong> Mehtas!Mobile Medical UnitDebuts at GalaThe sparkling new, upgraded Mobile MedicalUnit (MMU) – funded by proceeds from last year’sGala – was parked inside <strong>the</strong> Rochester RiversideConvention Center at <strong>the</strong> <strong>2012</strong> Gala so that guestscould step aboard and tour <strong>the</strong> new unit.Part of <strong>Unity</strong>’s <strong>Health</strong>Reach Program, <strong>the</strong>vehicle travels into Rochester’s poorestneighborhoods to provide medical anddental care to individuals who cannotafford health care or who have limitedaccess to traditional services. The MMUis a unique resource which serves <strong>the</strong>needs of thousands of adults andchildren in our community.9,000 people inRochester arehomeless. 2,500 of<strong>the</strong>m are familieswith children.
