<strong>Uniforms</strong> <strong>in</strong> guid<strong>in</strong>gIn 1909 girls want<strong>in</strong>gto become ‘Scouts’adopt a makeshiftuniform based on thegarments the boyswear. Generally it is alarge khaki hat withthe Scout fleur-de-lisbadge, a khaki shirtwith a long skirt <strong>in</strong>either l<strong>in</strong>coln-green,dark grey or navyblue.By the 1920s a def<strong>in</strong>ite changeemerges. Shirts are commonlyworn outside the skirt andsecured with a belt. OnlyPatrol Leaders and theirSeconds wear lanyards.Dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g badges aremoved to the left breastpocket.Proficiency badges (nowcalled <strong>in</strong>terest badges)are worn on the rightsleeve start<strong>in</strong>g at the topand work<strong>in</strong>g downwards.In his Scheme for Girl Guides, Robert Baden-Powell suggests that Guides weara jersey, tie <strong>in</strong> their Company colour, dark-blue skirt, red biretta (beret) orstraw hat (summer). Theloose ends of the tie fit through a tie r<strong>in</strong>g on the blouse. In 1968the blouse is modified to long sleeves and the tie worn througha blue woggle. The belt becomes optional.Guide uniforms1946 to dateA new range of mix and match garments designed by JeffBanks is launched <strong>in</strong> 1990. This <strong>in</strong>cludes a t-shirt, poloshirt, sweatshirts, trousers, skirt, culottes, a badge sashand other items.


In 1914 the first suggested uniform for Brownies, then called Rosebuds (aboveand below), was a dark-blue skirt, knickers, knitted jersey and cap or ‘tam.’ In 1915additional brown and blue items were suggested <strong>in</strong> the Girl Guide Gazette. Thesewere an overall, skirt and jersey, belt, hat or cap trimmed with brown, and a tie.<strong>Uniforms</strong> <strong>in</strong> guid<strong>in</strong>gThese 1926 Brownies wear the official 1917 uniform of a brown tunic dress withpatch pockets, brown belt, knitted cap or rush hat and brown tie. The ends of thetie were worn loose until 1921 when the style is to fold them up. The wholePack wear the samecolour.Brownie uniformsc1914–1940Marion CrowdyThese Brownies <strong>in</strong> 1932 wear the ‘pork pie’ hat with buttons that was <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong>1917. The woolly hat rema<strong>in</strong>ed popular until the 1960s. The Six emblem is moved tothe right breast <strong>in</strong> 1931.


Houlton Archive<strong>Uniforms</strong> <strong>in</strong> guid<strong>in</strong>gThe cotton hat, <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> 1934 as an alternative to the rush hat,is popular dur<strong>in</strong>g World War II.
