What are you looking at?
No matter where we are, it seems there is always something or someone
competing for our attention. We are living in a multi-media world that never seems
to shut down or slow down. It’s television, cell phones, emails, texting,
Facebook…and now something called twitting? Some of these things do deserve my
attention. I need to answer my cell phone because there are teachers, students and
parents depending on me. I need to reply to some emails, and I have even fallen
victim to texting on a daily basis out of necessity. Yes, there will always be a list of
things competing for my attention and yours. But are the things we give our attention
to even worth looking at? Sometimes I think we see so much that we actually
see nothing. On television we see children suffering from hunger in distant lands but
fail to see the people in our own communities hurting in similar ways. What are we
looking at? On the internet we see the violence in the Middle East, but ignore the
fact that just a quick, twenty minute drive can take us to places that nightmares are
made of. What are we looking at?

St. Rita School for the Deaf started a new school year on August 18 th with
180 students. They are what I am looking at. Each one of them has an amazing story
that shouts louder than any cell phone call, email or text message. We know they are
not protected from our self-indulgent, attention-seeking world. We know there are
many things competing for their attention, which is why our teachers work with
passion and dedication to fulfill the mission of the school…“to provide a
value-oriented environment which facilitates the educational, social and spiritual
development of each student.” Our goal for each one of our students is to graduate
with the knowledge, self-confidence, and faith that they need to be the best version of
themself; to be the person that God intended them to be.
Before school began we purchased one hundred new crosses that were hung
throughout the school building. You will find them in every classroom, in offices, and
the cafeteria. These crosses are a bit unique. If you look closely you will notice that
Jesus is signing I Love You. We want our students to see Jesus during their busy
school day. We want them to see Him using their language. More importantly, we
want our students to feel His presence in our teachers and staff.
We appreciate you reading this issue of the Silent Advocate. Thank you for
sharing your time with us. My prayer for St. Rita students is one that I offer to you.
May you take the time to see the things that really matter, do the things that make a
difference, and feel the love of Christ along the way.

Julia is only three years old, but already an inspiration to many.
Whether she’s working to complete an activity in the classroom or
outside running around with friends, her tenacious spirit is felt. It’s a
spirit that no doubt grew from her mother’s own heart. When Julia was
born with CMV, doctors said she would never be able to do much of
anything. Her mom Nichole, however, had different plans. After
Julia was diagnosed with moderate to intense hearing loss, Nichole
scheduled a tour of St. Rita School. Ironically enough, Nichole had been
volunteering at St. Rita Fest since she was a child. “I always knew about
St. Rita Fest, but never really knew what went on inside the school itself.
When I found out Julia was deaf, I knew it was time to learn more about
the school I had always volunteered for.” Nichole says during her tour
she was sold, and quickly made plans for Julia to begin her education as
an infant in St. Rita School’s LOFT (Language Opportunities for Tots)
Program. “I believe St. Rita School has changed Julia’s life”, says
Nichole. With every milestone that they experience, she remembers the
discouraging words by the doctors who didn’t believe in her daughter.
“Sometimes I just wish I could go back to those doctors who tried to take
my hope, and prove to them that they were wrong. I want them to see all
the things that Julia has accomplished.” Nichole will never forget the
day Julia’s teacher, Ms. Jen, excitedly told her that Julia recognized the
alphabet. She remembers the first day Julia sat up by herself and the day
she began scooting around independently. “I am so grateful for St. Rita
School. I know Julia has teachers and other people there who love
her like I do.” Nichole says St. Rita School feels “like home”. She
understands that having a deaf child means embracing the deaf culture.
“I want Julia to have deaf friends and to be a part of that world, like a
family.” Nichole’s goal is to have Julia treated like everyone else, and
Julia won’t have it any other way. She wants to do everything her peers
are doing; and teachers at St. Rita School do everything they can to make
this happen. Nichole looks forward to new milestones for Julia while at
St. Rita School and hopes that one day she will be a St. Rita graduate.
She is optimistic about Julia’s future, but tenderly embraces the reality
that Julia may need her life-long support. “I know she might need to
live with me forever. It doesn’t bother me. I love her. She is my child
and I will do anything for her.”

There are less than ten culturally
deaf priests in the world.

Father Jim Hall, a 1955 St. Rita
graduate, was ordained priest on
June 9, 2001. At the age of 64, he
became only the 7 th deaf person to
be ordained a Catholic priest in the
United States. Father Jim Hall died
suddenly June 26, 2006.
It’s been over five years since Father
Michael Depcik last visited students at
St. Rita School. The picture to the left
was taken during his visit in 2005.
Somewhere underneath all those student’s
hands are Father Depcik’s hands. Today
he is still using those hands to communicate
the love of Christ to over 3,000 people each
month, most of whom are deaf. With
his weekly video blog, Father Depcik
provides spiritual guidance through
homilies, guest interviews, special
prayers, and by answering questions
from viewers.
Father Depcik believes the greatest
problem facing deaf Catholics is that
they do not have access to the sacraments,
and therefore do not have a full
understanding of the Catholic faith.
Most Catholic churches across the
country do not offer Mass in ASL
(American Sign Language). Some
churches do have interpreters at times,
but having a hearing person interpret
words of faith is not the same as having
a deaf priest who speaks your language.
The Catholic church has also undergone
some major changes over the last forty
years. When Father Depcik was growing
up there were more priests and nuns
serving in the Catholic church. They
helped him learn about his faith and
taught him how to pray.

Father Michael Depcik graduated from St. Rita
School for the Deaf in 1988. His mother, along
with his four siblings also attended St. Rita
School. He was ordained priest in June of 2000
and currently serves deaf Catholics in Chicago.
He also leads summer programs for deaf
Catholics at De Sales Center in Brooklyn, MI.
God’s favorite language is silence. We need to be silent

“Things are different now. Today, there aren’t as many priests and nuns, so Catholic
parents must take a more active role in teaching their children themselves.”
Father Depcik is most concerned about the rise in broken families. He worries that
families are too busy; that they need to slow down and spend more quality time
together.
“If families are not stable, then society will not be stable. Families need to learn
how to pray together.”
He gives credit to his “St. Rita” family for being an integral part of his faith and
vocation. Father William Wysong, current St. Rita School priest, taught Father
Depcik when he was a student in the 80’s.
“He was an excellent teacher and he gave me a good foundation. I still remember
many things from his classes; in fact, I think he taught better than a few of my
professors at seminary.”
Next June, Father Depcik will be transferred to Detroit where he will begin his
work at St. John Deaf Center. He no doubt will continue to be in high demand
throughout the world as he carries out his new pastoral work.

Did You Know?
St. Rita School for the Deaf is fully accredited by the
Archdiocese of Cincinnati and by the State of Ohio. St. Rita
just completed its most recent 2-year accreditation process.
St. Rita School had been accredited for years, but is required
to participate in a renewal process every six years to maintain
accreditation. The first year is a self-study, during which an
academic portfolio is developed. The portfolio outlines in
detail how St. Rita School’s curriculum aligns with Ohio’s
state standards. During the second year of the accreditation
process a representative from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati
reviews the portfolio. A team of Catholic principals,
teachers, and administrators then perform an external review
to look over the portfolio a second time. They make
recommendations before the final portfolio is submitted to
a state committee. Once again St. Rita received a full
approval! Congratulations teachers, administrators and staff
for making St. Rita School for the Deaf great!

Everyday Miracles

My first day at St. Rita School for the Deaf, I remember it just as if it were
yesterday. I walked onto the campus and was greeted by a myriad of friendly
faces. A priest led us to a chapel up on the second floor of the school. Doors were
opened wide and long rows of wooden benches welcomingly beckoned us to enter.
The chapel was radiant by the sun reflecting through the stained glass windows
surrounding the room.
An angelic figure was kneeling in front of the benches holding up her hands
into two I love you signs. That figure is one of the numerous, inspiring symbols
surrounding the campus reminding us that God loves us very much. The priest walked
to the altar and kissed it. I noticed that there too was an I love you hand sign engraved
on it. I soon learned that the priest’s name was Fr. Wysong. He signed the entire mass.
I felt a presence in the chapel that day. I either finally listened after so many
years, or possibly it was the first time ever. I grasped the fact that it was God’s house
and that we were graciously invited. From that day, I felt the harmony within, and I
actually belonged here unlike the other public schools I had gone to in the past.
St. Rita School is an ideal example of one of God’s numerous homes.
Many people aspire to witness miracles, and claim that it is extremely rare to
see one in their lifetime. I believe I am extremely lucky because I witness miracles
nearly every day. They take place within the aged walls of St. Rita School for the
Deaf. Even the saint the school is named after is a miracle. Her life story is filled with
incredible miracles and selfless love for God’s people.
Just a few decades ago, if you asked someone what he or she thought was
possible for the future of a deaf child, they probably would have said it seemed bland
and uninspiring. Apparently, many deaf children didn’t have hope back then. St. Rita
School proves this wrong. Students who don’t have English as their first language or
even students with very little language at all, transfer to St. Rita School and emerge as
high school graduates with dazzling futures. Each graduate, alone, is a miracle.
St. Rita School for the Deaf continues to be an ideal example of God’s house.
I’ll always have faith in St. Rita School to produce miracles every day. I will
feel so honored to stride onto the stage in my cap and gown to receive my diploma as a
St. Rita graduate. I’ll always remember the miracles that occurred here every day and
the symbols that remind us of God’s unconditional love.

A Parent shares her story

We first came to know about St. Rita School for the Deaf about 2 years ago
when a friend of ours saw a story on the evening news. We weren’t even living in
Cincinnati at the time, but my friend called and told me about the school and I decided
to set up a time for a tour. That was all it took. I was sold. My husband and I moved
here one year later and enrolled Ethan in the preschool program. This year Ethan is
starting his second year in Miss Sue’s class and he absolutely loves it.
Ethan was born in 2005 with congenital CMV. We found out very early that
he was deaf and over the course of time it became clear that he would face additional
challenges. He is really perfectly suited for St. Rita School since he is both deaf
and apraxic. He is a busy little guy who is always on the go and he loves just about
anything with wheels. He’s also very intelligent and has been called the Alphabet
Wizard by his teacher. He has many physical challenges with both fine and gross
motor, but they don’t get the best of his strong willed and tenacious personality.
St. Rita is really a perfect match for Ethan’s communication needs but they
have also risen to the challenge of meeting his other needs as well. The Montessori
approach that is used in the classroom is wonderful for so many reasons: the independence
it fosters, the personal responsibility, the emphasis on fine motor tasks as they relate to
real world skills, and the flexibility to learn and discover at his own pace.
When Ethan started school last year, my husband and I just couldn’t imagine
that he would be able to do a fraction of the things that were expected of him in
Miss Sue’s classroom. She has high expectations for her students, regardless of their
abilities or disabilities. Ethan has a significant problem focusing his attention
and sitting still, but we’ve seen a dramatic improvement in this area. Ethan was also
nonverbal when he started school and not signing nearly as much as we’d hoped.
Now he is speaking and signing together! His demeanor is also different. He’s a
happier and a more well adjusted little boy now that he’s at St. Rita School.
St. Rita is a special place because it’s abundantly clear when you walk
through the front doors that everyone is welcome. This is unique for any school, but
really appreciated by parents who have children with multiple special needs. At St.
Rita School everyone is valued for who they are and encouraged to reach for the
stars because they are told they have the potential to do so. Ethan is very happy to be
at school and would generally prefer it if we would just leave him there! He has
self-confidence and pride, something we hadn’t seen in him before attending school.
I have complete confidence and faith in the staff at St. Rita School and feel an
enormous amount of gratitude. I have no fears about Ethan’s future because he is in
such competent and compassionate hands each day!

How did St. Rita prepare you for the future?
St. Rita helped me learn to pay attention to my surroundings. Teachers there helped me
gain the courage to voice my opinion and get involved with conversations. I was
always a very active girl, but I really was quiet and shy when I came to St. Rita.
St. Rita school really helped me bloom from a shy girl into an assertive young woman.
Why is St. Rita School for the Deaf a special place?
St. Rita staff are always there to help you when you need it. They are there with open
arms for simple hugs when you feel down. They are there if you are struggling with
your school work. They are there to give you advice when you need advice and help
you grow into a young adult.
What did you do after graduating from St. Rita?
I ran for Miss Deaf Ohio and came in as first runner up. I attended the University of
Cincinnati for one year, and then I transferred to Cincinnati State. I received my degree
from Cincinnati State in Liberal Arts and Deaf Studies. Then I attended Wright State
University and completed my B.S. in Rehabilitation Services.
What do you enjoy about your job as a teacher’s assistant at St. Rita School?
I enjoy my job because it is different every day. The kids I work with challenge me,
but at the end of the day I feel rewarded. I’ve always enjoyed doing things for teachers
because it’s great to have another perspective and feedback from another person. It’s
always about teamwork when you work with the Voc I class. There is always joy to be
around the kids because they bring a smile to your face regardless of what they do.
What are some of the most important things you are helping to teach students?
Life skills are the most important things that I try to teach students. Once they learn to
pay attention to their surroundings they will be able to ask for help and express
themselves. Then they will achieve.
What is the most challenging thing you've ever done?
Trying to finish my B.S. from Wright State and being a mom at the same time. What I
learned from that experience is that life will not always come out your way, but you
have to work your way around it.
Do you believe anything is possible?
Yes, I do believe anything is possible. Just because you are deaf or have another
disability does not mean you have to put your life on hold. You always have to find a
way around it, even if it takes longer. It’s okay if it takes a long time but if you’re
determined, then you will make anything possible. It’s how you set your goals and
figure out the strategies.
How do you feel about St. Rita School for the Deaf?
When I walk into St. Rita School for the Deaf I feel something good is waiting to
happen, but I never know what it is. It’s either a student coming up to me and giving
me a hug, or a staff member and/or parents appreciating the work I do for the students.
St. Rita School for the Deaf is a place for students to become successful. I am one of
them. They guided me and helped me bloom into a wonderful person.
What would you like to say to St. Rita students?
I would like the students to know they can always come to me for advice without any
judgments. I also want them to know that if I can overcome many barriers, then they
can too!

Feast Day Coincidence?
Do you believe in coincidences?
You might rethink your answer
after reading this.
St. Rita of Cascia is the Patron Saint of the Impossible. Last Feast Day,
May 22 nd , three things happened at St. Rita School for the Deaf, creating more
than just a coincidence. It began in the morning with some first-time visitors.
There to pick-up their daughter after her week-long, deaf residential practicum,
they had one special request. They had to visit the school’s chapel. Upon
entering, they were overcome with great emotion when their eyes met a glowing,
stained glass window of St. Rita of Cascia. Their story actually began that
morning, before they even left for their commute. An early phone call from their
best friend gave them a unique reason for their very timely visit of St. Rita
School. Turns out their best friend had just received news of her successful
adoption of a deaf child. These visitors were there to offer special prayers of
thanks to St. Rita of Cascia, on her Feast Day, for their best friend’s recent
blessings. Later that same Feast Day administration received news that St. Rita
School had received its accreditation by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. But there
is even more to this “coincidence”. On this Feast Day, St. Rita School’s assistant
principal, Maryann Barth, was chosen from thousands to represent deaf Catholics
from around the world at the Vatican. She will travel to Rome in November.
A coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.

There are many ways that you can make a
difference in our students’ lives:
Update your will or living trust- to reflect St. Rita School for the Deaf as one of
your beneficiaries. Without these documents, you surrender control of your property
& assets to the courts.
Think beyond cash – you can also give stocks, real estate, insurance policies
Life Income Gifts – Through establishing a charitable gift annuity or charitable
remainder trust an income would be paid to you or a loved one for life while making
a meaningful (and tax-deductible) contribution to us.
Scholarship Funds - Nearly all of our students are in need of financial assistance.
Creating an Endowed Scholarship Fund in your name or a loved one’s name will
help to ensure that we may continue in our mission. Endowment dollars are
necessary so that we may continue our ministry to the children we serve today and
into the future.
Special Projects - We are always seeking funding for special projects within our
classrooms and capital improvements within our campus.

special times & the ones we love...
The St. Rita Memorial Program is designed to remember
loved ones and friends, whether they are living or
deceased, on their birthday, anniversary, death or other
occasions. People enrolled in the Memorial Program, as
well as the donor, are remembered at a special mass and in
prayers at St. Rita School for the Deaf every Sunday, Holy
Day, and first Friday throughout the year. The Memorial
Program provides important and continuing financial
support for the education of the children attending St. Rita
School. If you are interested in participating in the

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
St. Rita School for the Deaf has a tuition assistance and
scholarship program for our students based on need.
Why are endowed scholarship funds needed?
Since 1915, no child has ever been denied an education at St. Rita School for the Deaf
because of their family’s inability to afford the cost of tuition. This ministry continues
because of the commitment and generosity of individuals and organizations that have
recognized the importance of reaching out to students who may not otherwise have the
opportunity to receive what is necessary to ensure their future success.
Nearly $3,000,000 is needed in Scholarship money each year.
These endowed scholarship funds are so important and necessary because they will
continue to provide support to students now and into the future.
The families and organizations listed below have recognized this important need and
made a commitment to the education of our students by establishing a Named
Endowed Scholarship Fund in memory or in honor of a loved one so that this
special ministry may continue.
