Oral hygiene plays a critical role <strong>in</strong> whole-body health that is sadly<br />
overlooked by most doctors.<br />

The oral cavity is a near-perfect breed<strong>in</strong>g ground<br />
for microorganisms that lead to decay of gums, teeth,<br />
and bone.<br />
Cavities and gum problems that occur <strong>in</strong> early life<br />
are just the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g. Chronic low-grade <strong>in</strong>flammation<br />
affect<strong>in</strong>g the gums (g<strong>in</strong>givitis) and <strong>in</strong>flammation<br />
anect<strong>in</strong>g the gums and bones support<strong>in</strong>g the teeth<br />
(periodontitis) has been implicated <strong>in</strong> the promotion of<br />
a variety of <strong>in</strong>sidious systemic disorders, such as coronary<br />
heart disease,"* arthritis,'' and even cancer.^'^<br />
Oral <strong>in</strong>flammation has also been clearly l<strong>in</strong>ked to<br />
elevated markers of <strong>in</strong>flammation, such as C-reactive<br />
prote<strong>in</strong>.^*'"^' In response to these warn<strong>in</strong>g signs, scientists<br />
noted recently, "Evidence for a l<strong>in</strong>k between<br />
periodontal disease and several systemic diseases is<br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g rapidly."^^<br />
Cum <strong>Disease</strong> and Stroke<br />
Gum disease sets the stage for an <strong>in</strong>creased risk of<br />
stroke. A recent review of literature on periodontal disease,<br />
published <strong>in</strong> the Joumal of the American Dental<br />
Association, concludes that periodontitis among older<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividuals is associated with an <strong>in</strong>creased risk of<br />
develop<strong>in</strong>g systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus,<br />
heari attack, and stroke.^^ Meanwhile, studies show<br />
that efforts to reduce the severity of periodontitis help<br />
reduce systemic <strong>in</strong>flammation,^"* and may thereby<br />
reduce the risk of cardiovascular events l<strong>in</strong>ked with<br />
<strong>in</strong>flammation.-'^<br />

chill<strong>in</strong>g. "Periodontal disease was associated with a<br />
small, but significant, <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> overall cancer risk,<br />
which persisted <strong>in</strong> never-stnokers, " write the collaborators,<br />
<strong>in</strong> the medical journal Lancet Oncology.^'^ This<br />
conclusion has profound implications. The fact that<br />
it arises from data gathered ft^om more than 48,000<br />
men over the course of approximately 18 years lends<br />
additional gravity to the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
The research team also found significant associations<br />
among oral health status and lung, kidney, and<br />
pancreatic cancers, as well as cancers of the blood. The<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestigators note that their results need <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />
confirmation, but they offer this speculation regard<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the implications of the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs: "...periodontal<br />
disease might be a marker of a susceptible immune<br />
system or might directly affect cancer ri^jt."'" In<br />
either case, periodontal disease takes on new significance,<br />
and appears to pose more of a threat to health<br />
than has previously been recognized.<br />
Furthermore, a recent study by researchers at the<br />
Harvard School of Public Health tentatively concludes<br />
that peiiodontitis is associated with an <strong>in</strong>creased risk<br />
of one of the most deadly cancers. "Compared with no<br />
periodontal disease, history of periodontal disease<br />
was associated with <strong>in</strong>creased pancreatic cancer<br />
risk, " write the Harvard researchers, <strong>in</strong> the Journal of<br />
the National Cancer Institute.^"<br />
The American Dental Association agrees that "oral<br />
health is important for overall health" and <strong>in</strong>dicates<br />
that salivary diagnosis may offer a key tool <strong>in</strong> health<br />
assessment. "A wide range of prote<strong>in</strong>s, nucleic acids,<br />
hoiTnones, pharmaceuticals, and pathogens can be<br />
measured <strong>in</strong> saliva, mak<strong>in</strong>g it an excellent candidate<br />
for rapid detection and screen<strong>in</strong>g of biomarkers for<br />
conditions hke caries, periodontal disease, osteoporosis,<br />
<strong>in</strong>fectious diseases, and cancer," it says.^'<br />
Botanical and Nutritional Agents Show<br />
Promise <strong>in</strong> Oral Hygiene<br />
Given the potentially lethal risks of poor dental<br />
hygiene, it makes sense to utilize all the science available<br />
to prevent even the smallest problems <strong>in</strong> the mouth.<br />
Several nutrients have shown very favorable effects<br />
when used as part of an oral hygiene program. Among<br />
these are coenzyme QIO (CoQlO), green tea, aloe vera,<br />
and pomegranate. These claims have been verified by<br />
published research.^-^''^^-^^ Other beneficial <strong>in</strong>gredients<br />

Multi-Faceted Benefits of Green Tea<br />
Green tea is well known for its beneficial effects<br />
throughout the body, but it is also effective <strong>in</strong> the fight<br />

About Periodontal <strong>Disease</strong><br />
Bacteria and other microorganisms are the underly<strong>in</strong>g<br />
cause of tooth decay. Bacteria break down<br />
<strong>com</strong>pounds from food called fermentable carbobydrates<br />
(e.g. sucrose), produc<strong>in</strong>g lactic acid and other<br />
organic acids as a byproduct. These acids promote<br />
enamel and dent<strong>in</strong> dem<strong>in</strong>eralization. Tbis soften<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of the enamel then leads to the development of dental<br />
caries (cavities).<br />
Although bacteria naturally co-exist with us, under<br />
certa<strong>in</strong> conditions they form a biofilm. A biofilm<br />
is a sort of liv<strong>in</strong>g carpet <strong>com</strong>posed of various bacteria<br />
and even fungi.'^ The microorganisms excrete<br />
a k<strong>in</strong>d of glue, firmly anchor<strong>in</strong>g themselves to tbe<br />
enamel surface of the tooth. Biofilm formation, and<br />
especially biofilm attachment, is at the root of dental<br />
disease." Plaque is the <strong>com</strong>mon term for this livii^g<br />
aggregation of various bacteria and fungi. Over<br />
time, plaque hardens and takes on various m<strong>in</strong>erals.<br />
At this stage, the coat<strong>in</strong>g is called tartar. It is this<br />
hard coat<strong>in</strong>g that dental hygienists work to scrape<br />
av^^ay <strong>in</strong> the dentist's office.<br />
G<strong>in</strong>givitis occurs when dental plaque stimulates<br />
an immune response <strong>in</strong> the soft tissues surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the teeth. The gums be<strong>com</strong>e <strong>in</strong>flamed and irritated,<br />
appear<strong>in</strong>g swollen and red and bleed<strong>in</strong>g easily. If<br />
g<strong>in</strong>givitis is left untreated, it may progress to periodontitis,<br />
a condition <strong>in</strong> which Gram-negative bacteria<br />
destroy the supportive structures of the teeth.<br />
Periodontitis may ultimately lead to tooth toss.<br />
Avoid<strong>in</strong>g the buildup of plaque is the reason<br />
dentists encourage us to brush our teeth and to<br />
floss regularly. Brush<strong>in</strong>g mechanically breaks up<br />
the film to some extent and r<strong>in</strong>s<strong>in</strong>g helps remove<br />
fermentable sugars. But on the biochemical level,<br />
tbere is more that can be done to fight what is, after<br />
all, a biological enemy. This is where natural bioactive<br />

shown that green tea catech<strong>in</strong>s exert direct antibacterial<br />
activity aga<strong>in</strong>st Streptococcus mutans, one of the<br />
key microorganisms responsible for tooth decay. Green<br />
tea also helps prevent bacteria from stick<strong>in</strong>g to teeth,<br />
by <strong>in</strong>hibit<strong>in</strong>g a bacterial enzyme <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> this process.<br />
It also <strong>in</strong>hibits production of amylase, an enzyme<br />
used by bacteria to break starches down <strong>in</strong>to sugars,<br />
which bacteria use to fuel their own growth.^''^'^<br />
Furthermore, Asian researchers showed recently<br />
that green tea reduces the <strong>in</strong>vasiveness of oral cancer<br />
and decreases the production of a prote<strong>in</strong> associated<br />
with oral cancer proliferation.^^" Additionally,<br />
American researchers report that green tea arrests the<br />
gi'owth and causes self-destruction (apoptosis) of oral<br />
carc<strong>in</strong>oma cells <strong>in</strong> the laboratory.'**<br />
In Japan, researchers conducted a study <strong>in</strong> which<br />
green tea was applied to the teeth of subjects with<br />
periodontal disease for eight weeks. Symptoms of<br />
periodontitis improved <strong>in</strong> subjects receiv<strong>in</strong>g green tea<br />
catech<strong>in</strong>s and there was objective evidence that green<br />
tea killed a significant proportion of the bacteria caus<strong>in</strong>g<br />
periodontitis <strong>in</strong> these test subjects.^'^<br />
CoQlO Helps Fight Oral <strong>Disease</strong><br />
Best known as a potent cardioprotective nutrient,<br />
CoQlO has also been shown to improve symptoms<br />
of periodontitis when applied topically <strong>in</strong> the oral<br />
cavity.^'^^'^^ Japanese researchers conducted a placebo-controlled<br />
cl<strong>in</strong>ical trial <strong>in</strong> men with established<br />
periodontitis. After n<strong>in</strong>e weeks of CoQlO application,<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestigators found evidence of "significant improvements"<br />
<strong>in</strong> periodontal status, which were not seen <strong>in</strong><br />
control subjects.•*<br />
An early study on CoOlO's effectiveness aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
periodontitis impressed the study's authors so much,<br />
they wrote, "Heat<strong>in</strong>g was so excellent five to seven<br />
days' post-biopsy that the biopsy sites were difficult<br />
to locate. The heal<strong>in</strong>g was viewed as extraord<strong>in</strong>arily<br />
effective."^'* It has been suggested that CoQlO benefits<br />
oral health by reduc<strong>in</strong>g the oxidative stress associated<br />
with low-grade <strong>in</strong>flammation of gums and bone.'"<br />
Complementary Ingredients for Dental Health<br />
Numerous other natural agents can be <strong>in</strong>corporated<br />
<strong>in</strong>to a dental health program to protect healthy<br />
teeth and gums. For example, the natural sweetener<br />
xyiitol not only has a pleas<strong>in</strong>g sweet taste, it has also<br />
been found to help prevent tooth decay.'^ Squalene<br />
boosts the immune system's ability to tackle <strong>in</strong>vad<strong>in</strong>g<br />
microorganisms,''' while lactoferr<strong>in</strong> specifically halts<br />
the growth of bacteria implicated <strong>in</strong> periodontitis.'^<br />
Hydrogen peroxide is an antiseptic <strong>com</strong>monly used<br />
to m<strong>in</strong>imize g<strong>in</strong>givitis, fight plaque, and promote a<br />
clean, fresh mouth.'^ Aloe vera {Aloe barbadensis) has

The review did not f<strong>in</strong>d a strong l<strong>in</strong>k between lung<br />
cancer risk and tooth loss or periodontal disease, as<br />
the researchers thought any excess risk may have been<br />
confounded by cigarette smok<strong>in</strong>g,® although one study<br />
has found such an association.'^<br />
In offer<strong>in</strong>g an explanation for their f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, the<br />
Harvard scientists believe that gum disease may cause<br />
general <strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>in</strong> the body, which can promote<br />
tumor growth. Or, they say, it could be a sign of a<br />
weakened immune system. Either way, they conclude<br />
that "periodontitis may be a marker for a type of immune<br />
function that has implications for tumor growth<br />
and progression,"^<br />

Pomegranate gets to the root of the problem by<br />
literally hitt<strong>in</strong>g bacteria where they Uve. Fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />
research shows that pomegranate extract suppi esses<br />
the ability of these microorganisms to adhere to the<br />
surface of the tooth.'^ The trick is to <strong>in</strong>hibit a <strong>com</strong>mon<br />
species of Streptococcus, prevent<strong>in</strong>g it from<br />
produc<strong>in</strong>g chemicals that create favorable conditions<br />
for fimgi and other microorganisms to thrive.<br />
Plaque may <strong>in</strong>volve four or more different microorganisms<br />
<strong>com</strong>b<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g forces to colonize the surface of<br />
the teeth. Remarkably, nature's own pomegranate<br />
fights the organisms' ability to adhere by <strong>in</strong>terfer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with production of the very chemicals the bacteria<br />
use as "glue."^^<br />
In fact, a recent study conducted by Brazilian<br />
researchers showed that pomegranate extract was<br />
more effective aga<strong>in</strong>st the adherence of bioñlm microorganisms<br />
than a pharmaceutical antifungal, when<br />
three or four microorganisms were <strong>in</strong>volved.'^ The<br />
results of this study suggest that "this phytotherapeutic<br />
agent might be used <strong>in</strong> the control of adherence<br />
of different microorganisms <strong>in</strong> the oral cavity, "<br />
concluded researchers.'-<br />
A study conducted at the Human Nutrition Center<br />
at Ohio State University <strong>in</strong> 2007 exam<strong>in</strong>ed the effects<br />
of us<strong>in</strong>g a mouthwash conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g pomegranate extract<br />
on the risk of g<strong>in</strong>givitis." Investigators noted that<br />
pomegranate's active <strong>com</strong>ponents, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g polyphenolic<br />
flavonoids (e.g., punicalag<strong>in</strong>s and ellagic acid),<br />
are believed to prevent g<strong>in</strong>givitis through a number<br />

of mechanisms <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g reduction of oxidative stress<br />
<strong>in</strong> the oral cavity,'^''-^'' direct antioxidant activity; anti<strong>in</strong>flammatory<br />
effects;^''^'* antibacterial activity;^^ and<br />
direct removal of plaque ft-om the teeth."*^ They also<br />
noted that a published pilot study has already shown<br />
that pomegranate extract can reduce the cl<strong>in</strong>ical signs<br />
of chronic periodontitis.'*''<br />
For the Ohio State study, researchers recruited 32<br />
healthy young men and women, who were randomly<br />
assigned to r<strong>in</strong>se with pomegranate mouthwash, or<br />
placebo, three times daily for four weeks. Subjects were<br />
<strong>in</strong>structed to r<strong>in</strong>se for five m<strong>in</strong>utes per r<strong>in</strong>se. Saliva<br />
samples were evaluated for a variety of <strong>in</strong>dicators<br />
related to g<strong>in</strong>givitis and periodontitis. Subjects r<strong>in</strong>s<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with pomegranate solution experienced a reduction <strong>in</strong><br />
saliva total prote<strong>in</strong> content,"^'which is nomially higher<br />
among people with g<strong>in</strong>givitis''*' and may correlate with<br />
plaque-form <strong>in</strong>g bacterial content.^'<br />
Pomegranate-treated subjects also experienced significant<br />
decreases <strong>in</strong> the salivary activity of the enzyme<br />
aspartate am<strong>in</strong>otransferase. This enzyme is considered<br />
a reliable <strong>in</strong>dicator of cell <strong>in</strong>jury and is elevated<br />
among patients with periodontitis." Pomegranate<br />
r<strong>in</strong>s<strong>in</strong>g also lowered saliva activities of alpha-glucosidase,<br />
an enzyme that breaks down sucrose (sugar),^^<br />
while it <strong>in</strong>creased activities of ceruloplasm<strong>in</strong>, an antioxidant<br />
enzyme."'' "The pomegranate extract-<strong>in</strong>duced<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> ceruloplasm<strong>in</strong> activity can be expected<br />
to strengthen antioxidant defenses," noted <strong>in</strong>vestigators.<br />
Subjects who r<strong>in</strong>sed with placebo solution did<br />
not experience any of these changes.^^ Taken together,<br />
researchers concluded that these changes <strong>in</strong> saliva<br />
