Do’s and Don’ts Don’t assume that a phone call at home out of hours automaticallyqualifies the claimant for four hours recall to duty at an enhancedrate. It doesn’t. Force policy is that a simple telephone call out ofhours will amount to a recall to duty only on exceptionalcircumstances. The claimant must show that the call was either ofsignificant duration or that they were required to carry out duty as aresult of the call. Enquire about the inconvenience caused to theclaimant and decide whether it is reasonable given all thecircumstances that a recall to duty payment is appropriate. This is ajudgement based on what can properly be considered asunreasonable inconvenience. Cases of doubt should be referred tothe Divisional Commander for payment authorisation. Always inform the budget holder responsible that you have authorisedovertime for one of their officers and be prepared to justify yourrationale for the commitment.
