CENTRE FOR CITIZENSHIP AND GLOBALISATION 16 RESEARCH FELLOWS Dr Benjamin Isakhan Research Fellow Dr Benjamin Isakhan’s primary research interests are democracy in Iraq, Orientalism and the media, the history of democracy and Middle Eastern politics and history. Dr Isakhan is the author of Democracy in Iraq: History, Politics and Discourse (Ashgate, 2012) and the co-editor of The Secret History of Democracy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011) and The Edinburgh Companion to the History of Democracy (Edinburgh University Press, 2012), both with Professor Stephen Stockwell. In addition, Dr Isakhan has authored several publications including book chapters in Islam and the Australian News Media (Melbourne University Press, 2010). He is also the author of refereed articles in the journals Middle East Policy, International Journal of Contemporary Iraqi Studies, Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication, Global Media Journal, Journal of Sociology, Australian Journalism Review, Media/ Culture, Transformations and the Bulletin of the Royal Institute for Inter-Faith Studies. He has presented around 20 refereed conference papers in the United States, Jordan, Australia and New Zealand. Dr Isakhan has also given guest lectures at The Centre for Middle Eastern Studies and The Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago as well as The Middle East Institute at Columbia University (New York) as sponsored by The American Academic Research Institute in Iraq (TAARII). Dr Isakhan has recently won several major awards including a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) for his project ‘Measuring the Destruction of Heritage and Spikes of Violence in Iraq’ which starts in 2012. Dr Yoko Harada Post Doctoral Research Fellow Dr Yoko Harada is an Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Citizenship and Globalisation. She is originally from Tokyo but spent her childhood also in Vancouver, Sydney and Osaka. Dr Harada’s primary research interest is in Australia – from politics, history, public policies, social problems, and sports to popular music. Comparing Australian issues with the situation in Japan always fascinates her. She is now focusing on the whaling dispute between the two countries.
Dr Michele Lobo Post Doctoral Research Fellow Dr Michele Lobo joined the Centre for Citizenship and Globalisation in April 2010, working as a Research Fellow on the ARC Discovery research grant, ‘Local Governance, Multiculturalism and Active Citizenship: The case of the Arab-Muslim Diaspora in the West’. Dr Lobo’s main research interest is the cultural experience of marginalised groups and the implications for social inclusion in Australian cities. She has worked as a lecturer and researcher in India and Australia. She lectured for several years at the Department of Geography, Loreto College, Calcutta University, India. Dr Lobo has recently published several books including Reimagining Citizenship (LAP Lambert Academic Publishing, 2010) Intercultural Relations in a Global World (Common Ground Publishing, 2011) and Migration, Citizenship and Intercultural Relations (Ashgate, 2011). Dr Maša Mikola Research Fellow Dr Maša Mikola has a PhD in intercultural studies and a background in journalism, communication and migration studies. Her doctoral work focused on migration, diversity rhetoric and the issues of space, place and social interaction in Melbourne. She is currently a research fellow on an ARC Linkage project: ‘Social Networks, Belonging and Active Citizenship among Migrant Youth in Australia’. Dr Miklola’s research interests are in urban anthropology, space, place, citizenship, identity politics and the politics of emotions. Dr Alexander Naraniecki Post Doctoral Research Fellow Dr Alexander Naraniecki’s current research project is titled ‘New Foundations for Multiculturalism’ and he is currently working on various publications focusing on the development of multiculturalism in Australia as well as the role of recognition and dialogue in promoting intercultural relations. Dr Naraniecki is also actively involved in building bridges between the Polish and broader Australian community through dialogue and intercultural events as a member of the Australian Institute of Polish Affairs. Dr Naraniecki’s research interests include integrative multiculturalism, liberalism, post-secularism, philosophy of religion, research methods, epistemology, Karl Popper, history of Australian sociology and the, European history of ideas particularly German and Central European thought.
