Dear Friends,
President Woodrow Wilson’s
words came to life in 1914, and
they are reborn today. “You can
test a modern community by the
degree of its interest in its YMCA
– a common investment that yields
common benefit to all mankind.”
YMCA volunteers, members and
partners invest heavily in kids,
families and communities…an
investment that yields results
throughout metro Atlanta.
Dating back to its founding in
1886, the Metro Atlanta YMCA
has been called to serve this
community. Throughout the ages,
the Y has been challenged to
be the right organization at the
right time to do what is right.
We continue to hold ourselves
responsible and accountable in
today’s society because of the
relevance of the YMCA’s mission
and the vision of YMCA leaders.
Community voices – past, current
and future – resonate through
Atlanta’s local YMCA branches.
Where else but the Y…can people
richly diverse in ability, age, belief,
culture, faith, and income involve
themselves in a shared vision?
Our future is set by our past.
The most important legacy of the
Metro Atlanta YMCA is for the
common good to be safeguarded
by common citizens like you and
me. It’s what YMCA leaders before
us knew and taught. We must
pass down this message from one
generation to the next.
Families throughout metro Atlanta
connect through the programs of
22 local YMCA branches. This year’s
annual report shares the voices of
members, volunteers and staff and
showcases the impact created by
a YMCA.
In 2005:
• More than 5,000 residents of
Canton and Cherokee County
found a place to belong at the
new G. Cecil Pruett Community
Center Family YMCA. We
acknowledge Canton Mayor
Pruett for his vision and
dedication to this public/private
partnership;
• Eighty-four CEOs and top
executives demonstrated
their collective commitment
to Atlanta teens by raising
more than $150,000 in the
20th annual Y-CEO Heritage
Invitational Golf Tournament.
Teens turn to the Y for lifechanging
programs, positive
role models and opportunities
to challenge themselves.
We proudly recognize Y-CEO
founder, Guy Millner, who
remains committed to teen
outreach;
• More than 13,766 children
and adults experienced YMCA
programs because of generous
Partner With Youth annual
campaign donors. More than
$2.6 million was given back to
residents in local communities
through Partner With Youth
financial assistance;
• Larry L. Gellerstedt III received
the Bransby Christian Leadership

YMCA play centers offer parents more
than just a comfortable place for their
children to play while they work out.
For most parents, it’s the one time a day
they get a break from the kids and an
opportunity to nurture their own health.

play center,” says elise Kreitner,
a Y member. “it allows me some muchneeded
time away from my children. i
feel better about myself and my role as
a mom when i work out. My children are
with capable, caring and amazing staff
members who reinforce what you want

A PLACE FOR
adventure
When school is out for the summer, the
Y is ‘home’ for kids. it gives them a place
to hang out and belong. summer camp
provides constructive, enriching and fun
activities with spanish, music, travel,
sports, and traditional outdoor camps.
At J.M. tull-gwinnett Family YMCA’s
Camp new heights, campers begin to
develop their leadership skills through
social contracting. First, campers create
a vision for how they want to be treated
and how they should treat others. When
behaviors contradict or support this social
contract, counselors teach and facilitate
techniques for campers to become more
self-managing. through this process
campers learn to communicate and
cooperate with others and appreciate
people of different abilities, cultures,
incomes, and religions.
Caring counselors reinforce the character
values of caring, honesty, respect,
and responsibility. Most counselors
are former YMCA campers who want
to become role models for younger
campers. Many campers will remember
their summer camp counselors forever,
along with the friends and life lessons
they experienced at camp.

environment that defines Y programs for
young people, gives them an opportunity
to develop their leadership skills, and
helps them to explore their emerging
values and attitudes regarding equality,
diversity and integrity.

Camp High Harbour is another
example of the YMCA’s dedication
to teen development. Resident
camp offers life-changing
programs. It’s the first time many
teens are away from home by
themselves.
Teens travel as far as Alaska
and Costa Rica to participate
in service projects, adventure
trips and leadership classes.
By helping others through
volunteer service, these teens
expand their life experiences,
enhance their technical skills,
and grow emotionally and
spiritually.
“When my daughter came
home for the summer and I
asked her what she learned,
she said, ‘i learned that you
don’t judge people by what
their name is, how much
money they have, what kind
of clothes they wear, or what
kind of car they drive.’ Those
are life lessons I’ve been trying
to teach her but were better
received from a camp counselor,”

Metro Atlanta YMCA is a partner in medical
and health research. the issues of health and
wellness are of vital importance to us, just as
they have been for the past 148 years.

Being physically active
improves emotional health
and outlook. the Metro Atlanta
YMCA offers a place to rejuvenate and
renew spirit, mind, and body. the CoACh
APPRoACh®, an exercise support process,
was developed to teach new and returning
exercisers how to start and stick with physical
activity. Research indicates the CoACh
APPRoACh® reduces the dropout rate of
exercisers by half.

CREATING A PLACE
to find yourself
how does a refugee girl relieve the
grown-up stresses of cooking, cleaning,
babysitting, and worrying about family
finances? she becomes a member of
the YMCA’s Clarkston Cool girls. YMCA
soccer has changed the lives of young
girls who are looking for something to
brighten their days. Running, playing
and trying new activities are just what
these girls need to forget the mounting
pressures of their everyday lives.
Being a Cool girl means being with
other children who experience
similar cultural difficulties,
talking about problems at
home and forgetting them
for a little while, too.
“Soccer provides an even
playing field. It provides
a chance for these girls
to experience life fully,”
says lisa Venerable, founding coach
of the girls team. “girls who joined
the soccer team have blossomed and
overcome their shyness. one of the
girls went from not saying a word
to talking all the time!”

down syndrome, loves being active
and has always enjoyed playing sports
with his father. “My dad has coached
me in sports since i was a little boy.
i like being active, so i was motivated
to continue being physically active.”
For daniel and dr. skandera, the YMCA
provides a great place to continue their
tradition of father-son sports.
dr. skandera, 87, a World War ii
veteran slowed by war injuries and
recovering from heart surgery, hopes
the Y can help him regain his health
and strength. As a result, the two are
involved in many Y programs.

together, both enjoy positive results.

endurance and improving
my coordination and
confidence,” says daniel.

they remain true today. The YMCA
movement is an investment that
yields benefits to all mankind. An
investment in the Metro Atlanta
YMCA yields strong kids, strong
families, strong communities in
Atlanta and, with our international
emphasis, in Costa Rica and
the Republic of Georgia.
During the past year, the Metro
Atlanta Y invested in new facilities
or expansions in Cherokee,
Coweta, DeKalb, Forsyth, Fulton,
and Gwinnett Counties. The focus
of these and all of the Metro
Atlanta YMCA branches is the
families in each community and
the Y programs and opportunities
available to them, not the buildings
located in their neighborhoods.
The return on these capital
investments is evident when you
enter a YMCA and see children
who are developing character and
values, teens who are emerging as
leaders in their communities and
local families who are building
stronger relationships.
The Y also offers a community
benefit by improving the health of
its residents. The applied programs
of THE COACH APPROACH® and
