Not by thetime frame of the historyof the river, perhaps, butfor a single artist in a single lifetime, it is daunting.Andrei Kushnir has spent more time on the banksof the Potomac than many of us have lived. Wholeart movements have come and gone, as havehundreds of local artists who strove to capturesomething of the essence of the place.Andrei’s purpose, even thirty years ago, was toexplore every aspect of the river he loves, and onlyshow the whole body of work when everythinghe had to say was said, not in a pamphlet, but adefinitive novel of the rich visual and historicalexperience that is the Potomac. Many of Andrei’s paintings hang in the humblehomes of kayakers, conservationists, fishermenand outdoor lovers who prize authenticity as muchas the imagery that captures the stories and characterof the river. His paintings are loose pagesfrom an ongoing epic, ever-flowing toward theChesapeake Bay.Michele Taylor, Curator pro-tem.American Painting5118 MacArthur Blvd NW, Washington, DC 20016(202) 244-3244classicamericanpainting.com4 ■ galleries ■ MAY 2013
