In the Storm I Rise (detail)
12" x 16" Horsehair and Encaustics
on Hand-Cut Porcelain Panel
Gallery West presents the complex and layered
work of Ceramist Kimberley Bush, from October 5-30.
Kimberley's multi-process and delicate porcelain
panels explore how to use the burning effects of
horsehair to create illusions of various elements of
nature....such as lightning or trees, while simultaneously
building other natural effects with encaustics.
Kimberley gets some of her inspiration from the
positive energy of the environment, in particular the
sun, earth and moon.
In the same solo exhibit, Kimberley's raku bottle
forms will be on display. Her vibrant and textured
vases and bottles are truly uncommon and sublime.
James Schaefer, Everyday Beauty, October
1-29. The works in this show, though mostly
still life paintings of ordinary objects from the
garden and farm, highlight how the play of
light and shadow add beauty to the everyday.
Each of these works on paper began as ink
drawings, with transparent and opaque color
added in successive layers. James' technique
draws on Chinese traditions, which the artist
began to study after a trip to Beijing in 2008.
A play of shadow and light grows up organically
from the intertwining materials: Chinese
ink, transparent watercolor and gouache on
paper. The paintings reflect the advice an
older painter once gave a younger, "light and
shadow never stand still".
Artist Talk: Monday, Oct. 3. James Schaefer
will be at the gallery on Monday, Oct. 3 to talk
about his work and do a demonstration.
The gallery also specializes in preservation
custom picture framing with a wide variety of
framing services.
October 5-30: WORLD ON A WIRE-features solo
artist Tanja Meski, a mixed media painter, and
member of the Gallery. Her current works
reflect a theme she started with the painting
Ocean on a Wire referring to the BP oil spill
in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, intended to
critique the slow bureaucratic processes relating
to the well being of international waters,
including rescue operations, use of assets, and
payment of expenses. Her intention is to make
art that reflects the latest global events and
the potential destructiveness of both Nature
and humans.
Each month, the Gallery also presents a “new”
Monthly Members' Show in Gallery II. All works
are for sale. The Foundry Gallery is a nonprofit
artists’ cooperative with reasonable monthly
dues, welcoming new members at both the
“full” and “associate” level. A new level of
membership, entitled “Affiliate,” now in effect
enabled current and former members to maintain
affiliation with the Gallery. The Foundry
Gallery is located in a traditional brownstone,
conveniently located near the Dupont Circle
Metro Station and public parking.
The Gallery is available for rent, at modest
rates, for small meetings, parties and receptions
Belmar uses iconographies; bikes, spinning tops,
clearly rendered have an evanescent aspect.
A small canvas shows a new pair of work
gloves, bright orange suede with blue twill
backs against a cerulean blue, once found in
every household, are no longer ubiquitous.
In Bright Idea, an incandescent light bulb in
on each quilted diamond that they entice to
French Pace & New Work by Gallery Artists, Oct 11
- Nov 5. Meet the Artist: Saturday afternoons.
Landscape artist Barbara French Pace whisks us
away to quiet places “far from the crowd” in her
new exhibit. Occasionally a solitary figure walks
pensively along a path, but most of her paintings
invite viewers to marvel at dramatic cliffs or
contemplate lake reflections as if they were there
alone to absorb the beauty. Even urban scenes feel
quiet as if lost in time. Working in oil, the artist
uses subtle colors and smooth transitions to capture
the effects of light and lend a sense of calm.
Pace has studied art locally and in Italy. She draws
inspiration from extensive travels, including
overseas workshops with artist colleagues.
Twice selected artist-in-residence at
the Stone Tower Studio at Glen Echo,
she exhibits regularly at Waverly
Street Gallery and other locations in
the mid-Atlantic region.
Graphite gray hematite, a piece of the Berlin
Gay Faulkenberry and Jane Hartley: Two Artists
- Two Approaches. spotlights two very different
approaches to contemporary realist painting:
one born from plein air impressionism and the
other from a classical tradition full of symbolism
and humor.
Gay Faulkenberry is inspired “by the way light
reveals form and essence.” She paints primarily
from life, whether a landscape or still life, and
allows her emotional response to the subject
to be evident in her work. The artist, a past
President of the Plein Air Painters of America
and Awards Judge for Plein Air-Easton 2008,
says that “it is the artist’s job to discover his or
her personal voice in creating a language that
communicates beyond words.”
By contrast, classically-trained Jane Hartley,
after conceiving an idea, carefully researches
it and methodically brings that idea to life
on canvas. She enjoys creating a body of
work around a single theme; in this exhibit,
her series of paintings is titled “Knot Play,” a
humorous play on words that loosely describes
Hartley’s portion of this exhibit. The artist is
a juried member of the International Guild of
DOVER STREET
Artists and the American Society of Traditional
Artists.
The Ulrich Museum of Art has a rich and comprehensive
collection of artwork from the 20th
and 21st centuries. Nearly 6,000 pieces in its
entirety, it includes some of the earliest works
of modern art to contemporary performance
art pieces. In the past century there have been
dramatic changes in how artists think about
and present their work, in the public’s perception
of artists and their craft, and in the media
that artists use to express their ideas. This exhibition
offers a chance to explore these themes
in depth through the works of artists such as
Imogen Cunningham, Robert Henri, Joan Miró,
and Gordon Parks.
Masks, October 1 – 30. A juried all media
exhibition open to all artists. Masks have long
served as a symbol and a tool for concealment,
protection, amusement and performance.
Artists approached the idea of the mask both
literally and conceptually. A fundamental
theme is the relationship between the concept
of a mask and a person’s identity. Our juror for
this exhibition is Brittany Lawrence Yam,
Director of Project 4 Gallery in Washington DC.
