Hard-hitting drama performed in BrookActivity CentreA key event in the Creativity Month in Colin programme was a powerful new drama, ‘I Never See the PrettiestThing’, which explored the topic of suicide. Local people and theatre goers from further afield were able to watchthe play in a special constructed theatre space in the Brook Activity Centre in Twinbrook. The Colin Neighbourhood Partnership’s Suicide Prevention Taskgroup and Partisan Productions joined forces topresent ‘I Never See the Prettiest Thing’. At times funny, moving, and challenging, the play ran for 5 nights andwas attended by over 600 people. An entry fee was waived in lieu of charity donations and over £850 was raisedwhich went directly to Youth Counselling Services in the area. The play used real testimonies from real people about their own personal experiences and the devastatingaftermath that suicide has on both a family and the wider community. With a combination of drama and songthe play attempted to highlight many of the misconceptions about suicide as well as raise awareness about itsprevalence. The subject matter may have been challenging but the play was designed to move and inspire. Theplay conveys the message that life is worth living and that good things can happen if you focus on the positive;those prettiest things that we may not always see.Colin Neighbourhood Partnership would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to all who attended, tookpart and produced this production. We would especially like to thank those who funded this project includingDCAL, Big Lottery Fund and Arts Council NI. Most importantly, we would like to thank those members of thecommunity and local families for their input which made this production possible. If you would like to talk tosomeone about the issues raised in this article please contact Colin Counselling on 028 9060 4347 or Lifelineon 0808 808 8000.There was great feedback from the community, including these comments:“So powerful. Beautifully and painfully explored. Such a complete production with drama, music andmovement too. Haunting! Thank you!”“Absolutely fantastic play. Could relate very well to some of the things that happened. Hope it will helpsome of the teenagers open up to what they’re feeling inside. Brilliant show!”“Brilliant performance, very emotional, really captured the feelings of the community during a difficulttime. Brilliant job done by all. Thank you.”“Thought it was very powerful and moving and is just what the community needs to come closer and standby one another – once again brilliant and thank you.”“Very powerful. It was a great mixture of drama, movement and dance. Very poignant and insightful.Hopefully it will inspire people to talk more openly about their troubles.”“Excellent show; cast were fantastic. I feel the play got what depression feels like and actually understoodthe thinking of someone struggling.”“Handled the subject matter excellently, with a message of hope at the end. Brilliantly acted andperformed.”The Colin News | Page 04
