Beginning in January a group of dedicated parents begin working onthe After Prom. Anyone can help with this event, whether it be through donations (food or monetary), volunteering,or chairing one of the many committees. After Prom is not a school sponsored event. It is a self-sustainingevent, and all monies raised are used for that evening. We as parents sponsor this safe, fun, event for thestudents so they have somewhere to go after the Prom. The event is also open to any Junior or Senior student ofBBHHS, regardless if they attend the Prom. It is a lock-in event held at the high school from approximately11:30 till3:00 AM. There is food, karaoke, inflatable games, casino area, movies, and of course prizes! The After Prom committee raises money through two activities: the selling of graduation yard signs and theselling of raffle tickets. (Continued from page 1)years, and have earned the "privilege" of no exams. They make some valid points. Our discussion with students helped outline, from ourprofessional experience, the ingredients of a grade, and the purpose for assessments (exams). Gradesreport on learning - period. For too many, grades areoften confused with work. While we recognize thecritical importance of a good work ethic, there is a realdifference between effort and achievement. In order toconsistently and confidently report on learning, teachers need EVIDENCE. Classwork, homework, presentations, quizzes and exams are all forms ofevidence. In all classes, the evidence used to assignan 'A' for a quarter grade is based on these types ofevidence.Beyond inspiring, facilitating and confidently andconsistently reporting on student learning, schoolsexist to prepare students for life beyond school. Forthe vast majority of Bees, this means college or somekind of post-secondary education. Public or private, and as technologically progressive as theseinstitutions may be, tuition-paying students are stillbeing evaluated (graded) by high stake - mid-term andfinal - exams.Since our seniors are already exempt, in most cases, from spring finals, mid-terms are our last opportunityto provide our seniors with practice in the testingexperiences they will encounter beyond BBHHS. Asconfident as we are in reporting student learning, these exams give us more information about studentstrengths and weaknesses. As stated above, if one of our "double A" students hasa strong work ethic, completes assignments, isparticipatory and reliable in class - but struggles onexams - families need to know this, and work onimproving this area of weakness. Again, this importantprocess provides us more evidence to support ourconfidence in every student's potential for successbeyond high school.See you at one of our many programs and events.Go Bees!G.B.E.D.Mr. Mueller(For more news from Joe Mueller and from AssistantPrincipal, Susan Welch see page 8.PRESS RELEASEFROM THE BRECKSVILLE/BROADVIEW HTSBASEBALL/SOFTBALL FACILITIES IMPROVEMENT TEAMDonations Sought for BBHHS Softball & Baseball Field ImprovementsIn 2012, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School baseball and softball fields will be receiving significantimprovements. TheBrecksville-Broadview Heights football program does both! For the second straight year the Bees were among only 19 teams in Ohio that were recognized as AcademicAll-Ohio teams. Among the individual award winners chosen to the Academic All-Ohio team, BBHHS seniorlinebacker/fullback Kyle Graham made the elite list of honorees. The teams and individual players, from throughout the Buckeye State, were selected by the Ohio HighSchool Football Coaches Association (OHSFCA). He is known for his no-nonsense approach to the game offootball and that is a skill set that has served him well when it comes to academics."I think this honor for Kyle is a well-deserved one, one that was four years in the making. He is anexceptional leader on and off the field and in many different types of settings." Said Brecksville head coachJason Black. NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE, Lisa WitzkeImportant Information for You and Your Child About:Reye’s SyndromeReye’s Syndrome usually appears soon after a flu-like infection, chicken pox or any virus.Reye’s Syndrome is a disease that affects the liver and brain.Early diagnosis is crucial. An individual should be watched during the next 2-3 weeks following a viral illness for thesesymptoms, usually occurring in this order:relentless or continuous vomitinglistlessness- loss of energydrowsinesspersonality change-irritability, slurred speech, sensitivity to touchdisorientation or confusioncombativenessdelirium, convulsion or loss of consciousnessMedicines, at the very least, can mask symptoms. Therefore, if any of the symptoms of Reye’s Syndrome develop, donot use aspirin or anti-nausea medicine. Phone your physician immediately.Studies have shown that using aspirin or aspirin-containing medication to treat symptoms of viral illnesses(flu, chicken pox, or any viral illness) increases the chance of developing Reye’s Syndrome.Early diagnosis is vital. Current statistics of recorded cases show:90% recovery if diagnosed early;10% recovery if diagnosed late;70% fatalities overall (2001)No age group is immune; however, the disease usually affects children from infancy to about 19 years of age. Thelargest number of reported cases has occurred in the 10-14 age group. Increasing numbers of cases have beenreported in adolescents and adults probably due to their unawareness of the disease and taking over the counter drugsthat contain aspirin.Reye’s Syndrome appears with greatest frequency during January, February, and March when influenza is mostcommon.A person’s life can depend on early diagnosis. Acetylsalicylate is another word for aspirin; some drug label may usethe words acetylsalicylate, acetylsalicylic acid, salicylic acid or salicylate instead of the word aspirin. Reye’s syndromeis not contagious.See following the list of products on the following page that containaspirin and avoid giving them to children 19 years or younger to treator use during flu, chicken pox or any viral illness. The Herald – BBHHS 9January 2012
