Then thesleepless nights start to keepyou up, the migraines and hotflashes that can be paralysing, the mood swings that alienateyour co-workers, friends andfamily. But fear not! These arecommon symptoms of “perimenopause”,which occur duringyour mid 30s to early 40sbefore “premenopause” sets inaround your mid 40s to early50s before eventually reaching“menopause” in your 50s.Allow me to explain what ishappening to your body.First, the weight gain. Assoon as your fat cells detecta slightly lower estrogen level, they come to your rescue toproduce estrogen for you. Thisis one of their highly evolvedfunctions. As you age, yourovaries will produce less andless estrogen, so the fat cellsstart preparing to take overthe ovaries’ job, by increasingin size, number and abilityto store fat. And the placefat cells are better equippedto produce estrogen is in thebelly area (better than buttocks, hips and thighs). Ironically, the very weight gain weabhor is actually beneficial forus. While we are waging waragains the fat cells, they arelooking out for our menopausalwell being.Other hormones in yourbody are also affectedduring this period. Whenlevels of your minor homones(estrogen, progesterone, testosterone) decrease, majorhormones (insulin, thyroids, cortisol, adrenals) start to increaseto compensate. Sleeplessnights occur because yourlevel of cortisol and adrenalsincrease, which in turn causesmore stress to your body, andalso causes it to store morefat cells. Lack of sleep for alengthy period of time (monthsinto years) will create thevolatile mood swings duringthe day. Also, under stressyour body will produce moreinsulin which stimulates yourappetite center, causing youto eat more calories. Anotherimportant factor is your level ofthyroids. If they are not in balance, your metabolic rate willderail. Low thyroids will causelow energy and sex drive, depression, poor memory andconcentration, and frequentsweating. So the vicious cyclecontinues…The good news is we willaddress the best methods toprepare, confront and combatall the above symptoms innext months health feed.
