To Serve this Present Age
On May 22, 1901, Spelman gave its first college
degrees to Jane Anna Granderson and Claudia T.
White. By earning baccalaureate degrees, these
two women quieted the critics who believed that
women, particularly black women, were incapable
of successfully navigating a college curriculum.
From those two graduates in 1901 to
the anticipation of a graduating class of more
than 400 in 2001, Spelman’s commitment to
educating African American women for leadership
and service is unparalleled.
To commemorate this achievement, all Spelman
alumnae, and all classes, are summoned home to
Spelman, May 17–20, as together we:
• Honor the memory and legacy of the Class of 1901
and commemorate the 100th baccalaureate class
of Spelman College, the Class of 2001.
• Recognize The Living College, the alumnae
legacy of achievement and service from
1881–2001
• Exemplify the Spelman spirit through record levels
of participation and philanthropy
• Extend sisterly support for the scheduled
reunioning classes ending in 1 and 6.
