THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPSTHE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPSFROM THE ACTING WARDENRHODESTRUSTEESDEVELOPMENTCOMMITTEE FOR THERHODES SCHOLARSHIPSwww.RHODESHOUSE.OX.AC.UK/SUPPORTSince starting as Acting warden of Rhodes House,I have been struck by the exceptional enthusiasm which is found in thecommunity of Rhodes Scholars studying at Oxford. They have a real thirst forlearning, and also a strong commitment to the application of new knowledge in aglobal context. If ideas and inspiration were tangible objects, they would be seen fl yingfrom Scholar to Scholar, across academic disciplines, continents, and generations. This publication builds on the inaugural Honour Roll of Donors which was producedlast autumn. The second annual listing of our generous supporters is included withinits pages, and you will also fi nd a fundraising update and information about the currentRhodes Scholars. The impact that Rhodes Scholars have in the world is far-reaching and transformative, and giving to support the Rhodes Scholarships will allow this to fl ourish into the future.I would like to take this opportunity to say ‘Thank You’ – to all those who have volunteeredtheir time; to those who have included the Rhodes Trust in their will; to those who havegiven a donation in the past and to those who will do so this year.Dr Andrew GrahamActing Warden of Rhodes HouseJohn Hood (Chair)(New Zealand & Worcester 1976)Dominic Barton(British Columbia & Brasenose 1984)Sir John Bell(Alberta & Magdalen 1975)Dame Helen Ghosh DBEDonald J. THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPSTHE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPSA SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FORTHE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPSwww.RHODESHOUSE.OX.AC.UK/SUPPORTOxford without avery strong RhodesScholarships programmewould be inconceivable, andthe Rhodes Scholarshipswithout Oxford would beinconceivable......................................PROF. ANDREWHAMILTONVice-Chancellor of theUniversity of OxfordThe RhodesScholarships forge linksbetween nations and collaborationacross disciplines. Dialogue and deeperunderstanding, established at the Universityof Oxford, fl ourish globally when Scholarscomplete their studies and disperse acrossthe world.Underpinning this is the Rhodes endowment. At 30 June 2012, the Rhodes Trustendowment stood at £127.4 million. Buildingthe endowment for perpetuity will allow theScholarships to remain relevant, active andpowerful. Crucially, it makes them sustainable. In the present financial climate, annual yieldson the endowment have markedly reduced andwe can expect that this will continue. At thesame time, the costs of providing the distinctiveexperience of scholarship at the University ofOxford have risen considerably. At present ratesof draw-down from the Rhodes endowment, the value of the endowment will decreasesignificantly over the coming decades. To prevent this scenario, and to ensure thatno reduction in the number of Scholarshipsfrom the current level is needed, the Trusthas embarked on an ambitious fundraisingprogramme. This offers the current generationof Scholars and other members of the Rhodescommunity the remarkable opportunity to bepart of our philanthropic effort to secure theScholarships for perpetuity. The impact this will have in the next decade,in the next century, and even beyond, is ofprofound importance. It will guarantee andsustain the transformative ability of the RhodesScholarships to empower young people to beeffective and impassioned agents of change ina world that needs them as never before. Our goal is to ensure that the second centuryof the Rhodes Scholarships will be one inwhich Rhodes Scholars continue to facilitatepositive change in the world, through dynamicthought and collaborative action.4 5
